05/22 Padres Preview: Game 4

The Padres have faced two very tough pitchers in the first two games of this series. Tonight they'll go against the fresh face of Tyler Lyons, who will make his major league debut in the rubber game of this three-game set at Petco Park. Meanwhile, Burch Smith will continue his quest for his first career win as he makes his third ever major league start.

Smith bounced back from an abysmal major league debut by pitching 5 1/3 solid innings, despite yielding five runs on six hits, in a one-run extra-inning loss to the Nationals last Friday.

He'll need to slow down a Cardinals offense that routed the Padres for ten runs last night to snap a four-game losing streak. David Freese could miss his third straight game after getting Spiked in the thumb on Sunday. His replacement last night was Daniel Descalso, who collected five RBI on three hits, including a grand slam. On Monday, however Ty Wigginton took over at third base and went 0-for-2with a walk, was caught stealing, and grounded into a double play.

Lyons is getting the call for St. Louis due to injuries to to Jake Westbrook and Jaime Garcia. He's made eight starts for Triple-A Memphis this season, going 2-1 with a 4.47 ERA. The left-hander will become the Cardinals' third rookie starter and sixth rookie pitcher to take the mound this season.

Despite putting up just one run against Adam Wainwright last night, the Padres team that Lyons will face is one that has been clicking offensively. They've averaged nearly five runs per game over their last 20 games and have gone 16-9 over their last 25, a record bested only by the Cardinals, who have gone 17-8 in that stretch. Chris Denorfia has been a huge contributor, hitting safely in each of his last four games, including two 3-hit nights.

05/21 Padres Preview: Game 45 vs. St. Louis

You wouldn't realize it just looking at the teams' records, but the Padres and Cardinals have been equally hot lately, each going 16-8 in their last 24 games. The Padres have bounced back from a dismal 5-15 start to the season and now find themselves just two games under .500. The Padres also have the best record in the NL West this month, tied with the Diamondbacks at 11-7. They'll look to improve on that tonight and clinch the series win with Edinson Volquez on the hill.

Volquez was riding his own little hot streak, going 3-0 with a 2.49 ERA over four starts, before his most recent outing against the Nationals. But Washington tagged him for five runs in five innings on Thursday, giving him his first loss in five starts. The right-hander has struggled against St. Louis in the past. He has a lifetime 2-4 record with a 5.32 ERA against the Cards.

Matt Holliday has gone 7-for-17 with two homers and Carlos Beltran is 5-for-12 against Volquez. Ty Wigginton, who may make the start at third base again tonight for David Freese, is 4-for-12 with two homers off Volquez. But the Cards offense had trouble getting production at the plate last night. They combined for just four hits and one of their runs scored only because of an error by Chase Headley. Jon Jay was the star of the night for St. Louis, going 2-for-4 to improve his average to .354 since moving out of the leadoff spot in the lineup. Since April 22nd, he's hit mostly in the 6-spot, collecting 15 RBI during that stretch. He's also hit safely in 15 of his last 16 starts.

However, the Padres offense has been on fire as of late, and is looking to give the Cards another run for their money. They lead the NL in runs scored (92) over the last 19 games, including last night's three-run five-hit performance against one of the stingiest pitchers in the league in Shelby Miller. They've especially thrived in San Diego, wining 12 of their last 15 played at Petco Park and hitting 21 homers in 23 total home games this season.

But tonight they'll face another tough opponent in Adam Wainwright. He's 5-3 this year with a 2.51 ERA and is coming off a start in which he struck out eight batters while issuing just one walk against the Mets. He was tagged with the loss in that outing, however, as he yielded three earned runs (four total) on six hits through six innings of work. Prior to that, he tossed a two-hit shutout against the Rockies that took 120 pitches. Wainwright has a career 3-2 record against San Diego in five starts while boasting a miniscule 0.97 ERA.

05/20 Padres Preview: Game 44 vs. St. Louis

The Padres split the four-game series against the Nationals to open up this homestand. Now they will welcome the Cardinals to Petco Park for three games as they try to keep the wins coming.

Jason Marquis has been one of the more dependable pitchers on the staff this season. He's 5-2 with a 3.49 ERA over his eight starts and has won each of his last four. Tonight he'll face a tough opponent in the NL-Central-leading Cardinals as he goes for his longest win streak since 2007, when he won five straight for the Cubs. In his most recent start, he kept the Orioles to two runs (both solo homers) on seven hits and four walks in 5+ innings. Prior to that, he pitched an eight-inning gem against the Marlins, allowing no runs on five hits and a walk. The right-hander is 5-2 with a 3.80 ERA all-time against St. Louis, but has only faced four of their available starters: Ty Wigginton (9-for-24, five strikeouts), Yadier Molina (4-for-14 with a home run), Carlos Beltran (5-for-23 with a home run, 6 strikeouts), and Matt Holliday (4-for-20 with two home runs, five strikeouts).

The Cardinals won 14 of their last 18 games to improve to 28-15 on the season. They have been fantastic away from St. Louis, leading the majors with a 66.7% winning percentage on the road this year. Their roster boasts five players with at least 20 RBI under their belts and a rotation that leads the league with their collective 2.63 ERA.

Tonight's starter for the Cards, Shelby Miller, has been one of the more dominating pitchers, not only on their staff, but in all of baseball in 2013. His 1.40 ERA, tied with Clayton Kershaw, ranks lowest in all of Major League Baseball. He's racked up 57 strikeouts in 51 1/3 innings pitched while keeping opposing batters to a meager .182 average. And tonight, he brings a 14 2/3-inning scoreless streak to Petco Park. He's undefeated (2-0) in his last three starts, over which he's limited opponents to just one run. He's only pitched against the Padres in a relief role in the past, but they gave him some trouble. In fact, they were the only team to score off Miller in any of his six outings in 2012. He pitched three innings and gave up two runs to the Padres in San Diego last year, so he'll try to redeem himself in his very first start against them tonight.

Hopefully the Padres will have some offensive power left in them after yesterday's run fest. The team has won four of their last six games, including a sweep of the formidable Orioles and a series split against a very good Nationals team. In that span, they've hit eight homers and collected 33 runs. Youngsters Jedd Gyorko and Yonder Alonso have been two of the offensive leaders during that stretch, going 9-for-22 and 8-for-21, respectively, with Alonso homering in each of his last two games. We've also seen some good production out of the team speedsters, Everth Cabrera and Alexi Amarista, who are 10-for-28 and 6-for-14 in those six games. Cabrera has also succesfully stolen a base in each of his last five games, including three steals in yesterday's game alone.

05/19 Padres Preview: Game 43 vs. Washington

Today the Padres will try to get back-to-back wins against the Nationals for the first time since 2011. Andrew Cashner will take the mound in the series finale of the four-game set between the two ball clubs at Petco Park. He is coming off two of the best starts of his career, each of which lasted 7 1/3 innings and saw him and giving up a combined two runs (one earned) and go 1-0. He is also 1-0 all-time against the Nationals in five relief outings. He's given up two hits and struck out six over 5 2/3 innings.

Washington will send Dan Haren to the mound to go for his fourth win in five starts. His last time out he pitched a solid seven innings while allowing just two runs on six hits, but ended up with the loss as the Nats failed to provide him with any run support. Haren hasn't had much luck pitching in San Diego. In two starts at Petco Park (as a member of the Angels) he's given up nine runs in 11 2/3 innings and taken the loss in both.

05/18 Padres Preview: Game 42 vs. Washington

The Padres will try their luck again tonight as they take on the Nationals in the third of a four-game set. Southpaw Eric Stults will try to rebound from a disappointing loss in Florida. He gave up three runs through 5 1/3 innings of work while issuing a season-high five walks. He had given up three runs through 13 innings on his two starts prior to that, however. Tonight will be his first career outing against Washington, who have taken the first two games of this series. He'll try to get the Padres out of a rut that has seen them lose five of their last seven games with starting pitching posting a 6.83 ERA over their last six.

It'll take some more of that fight we saw by the Padres lineup in last night's game to overcome Jordan Zimmermann, who has been nails this season and is going for a league-leading eighth win tonight. He's won each of his last four starts, keeping his ERA to a miniscule 0.85 in that span while collecting 24 strikeouts and walking just four batters. In his most recent start, he limited the Dodgers to two runs in 7 2/3 innings at Dodger Stadium. In three career starts and 19 total innings against the Padres, Zimmermann is 1-1 with a 1.42 ERA. Two of those starts took place at Petco Park, where he's yielded just one run on eight hits while striking out 16 through 13 innings of work.

Burch Shows Improvement, But Huston is Streets Behind in Padres' Extra-Inning Loss

It was a hard fought game last night, but the Padres were unable to follow through in the end, dropping the second game against the Nationals and failing to tie up the series. After a thrilling 9th inning rally by San Diego against Rafael Soriano sent the game into extras, Huston Street gave up a two-out game-winning home run to pinch hitter Chad Tracy in the 10th inning. It was the sixth homer Street has allowed this season and third in his last three appearances.

There were some silver linings in last night's loss. The Padres got on the board in the 1st inning thanks to an RBI single by Kyle Blanks coupled with a wild throw by Bryce Harper that put the ball in the stands and allowed a second run to score.

Burch Smith looked better on the mound than he did in his debut. Though he gave up five runs on the night, his outing showed a lot of promise. He collected eight strikeouts through 5 1/3 innings of work, including fanning five of the first eleven batters he faced. He began to falter in the 4th, giving up back-to-back singles to Harper and Ryan Zimmerman to start the inning, followed by a home run to Adam LaRoche to put the Nats up 3-2. But Smith seemed to regain his composure and got through the rest of the inning, and the next, unscathed. However, he started losing gas in the 6th and Washington made him pay for it with consecutive home runs by Zimmerman and LaRoche (his second of the night).

With the Nats up 5-2 in the 6th, Jedd Gyorko hit a 420-ft home run to right center to put the Padres within two runs. Three innings later, they would put on a small ball clinic to tie the game and force extra innings. Zimmerman continued his defensive struggles, allowing Chris Denorfia to reach base on a throwing error with one out. Later, with Chase Headley at the plate and two retired in the inning, Denorfia advanced to second on defensive indifference, which the Nats would regret later as Headley hit a two-out single to bring a run home. Blanks was up next, and he wasted no time in driving in the tying run, hitting a line drive RBI single on the first pitch he saw.

It was all for naught, though, as Street served up the homer to Tracy in the 10th and the Padres were unable to answer back, despite back-to-back singles by John Baker and Alexi Amarista in the bottom of the inning. But San Diego once again showed a never-say-die attitude that has kept them close, if not on top, in so many games lately. Tonight they'll face Jordan Zimmermann in the third of a four-game series.

Burch Smith has another chance to make a good impression at the big league level tonight. He'll try to follow up last Saturday's disastrous ML debut with a solid outing against the Nationals tonight while leading the Padres to a win to even up the series. Smith showed us a glimpse of why he was given a chance to pitch in the Padres rotation when he threw a perfect 1st inning, including two strikeouts, against the Rays. But that was the extent of his success. He was pulled in the 2nd inning when he gave up six runs on five hits and a couple of walks - all before even recording an out.

Smith will have to find away to quiet the bats of Adam LaRoche and Bryce Harper. LaRoche, with his lifetime .322 average at Petco Park, continued his success last night as he homered for his second time in as many games and extended his hitting streak to 13 games. During that streak, he's hit .386 while collecting seven RBI. Bryce Harper's three career hits against Padres pitching were all home runs, including last night's solo shot in his first game since his (literal) run-in with the Dodger's scoreboard Monday night. Harper currently leads the Nationals in batting average (.298), home runs (11), RBI (22), and walks (20).

Gio Gonzalez hopes LaRoche, Harper, and the rest of his teammates will be able to give him a little more support than his last start. He was perfect through six innings, but gave up a couple of hits in the seventh before giving the ball over to the bullpen. Unfortunately, they couldn't hold the Nats' 1-0 lead as the Cubs rallied for two runs and the win over the final two innings. Luckily for Gonzalez, Washington pitching has dominated at Petco Park, posting a collective 1.02 ERA over a seven-game stretch in San Diego, during which the Nats have gone 6-1. That includes Gonzalez' only career outing against the Padres last April, a two-hit, six-strikeout performance that lasted six innings.

Hopefully San Diego can get back in the win column after suffering just their second loss in 11 home games last night. Carlos Quentin is a career 5-for-11 with a home run and four walks against Gonzalez. He is listed as probable for tonight's game after missing the series opener to celebrate the birth of his son, Clark. Chase Headley looks to continue his hot hitting at home. He's batting .370 over his last 13 games in San Diego and he's collected two hits in each of his last four at home.

Most of you know I'm a huge Aztecs fan. I go to SDSU and was there when Stephen Strasburg fanned 23 batters in a game. I was there when the Aztecs retired his number last season. I root for him every time he pitches... unless it's against my team. A lot of San Diego fans hope that he dominates tonight while still allowing the Padres to win. I'm not of that mindset. I want the Padres to hit well against any pitcher they face, even if its my most favorite non-Padre player in the world. I wouldn't be bummed if Strasburg shut our offense down, but I'd rather he allow a bunch of runs on a bunch of hits only against San Diego. Sorry, Strassy. You can end your winless streak in your next outing.

05/16 Padres Preview: Game 40 vs. Nationals

Edinson Volquez has turned things around since his shaky start to the season. He began 2013 with three straight losses wherein his ERA skyrocketed to 11.68. But through his five starts since then, he's kept his ERA to a modest 2.59 while going 3-0 to bring him back to .500. His most recent start was a near-victory. He tossed six solid innings, allowing just two runs on three hits and four walks, and the Padres were leading when he exited the game. But the bullpen allowed the Rays to rally and take the lead, snatching away what would have been Volquez' fourth straight victory.

Volquez is 1-1 in three career starts against today's opponent. But his most recent, a no-decision and his only start against Washington in a Padres uniform, was his most successful. Last April he allowed just three hits and one walk through seven strong innings of work, keeping the Nationals off the board until the 7th when he gave up a single run before exiting the game. The Padres, also scoreless up to that point, eventually rallied and won the game, but the decision went to then-reliever Andrew Cashner. That was the Padres' sole win in their last six games against the Nats at Petco Park, so they'll be looking to improve on that tonight and in this series.

San Diego been on a tear recently, going 13-6 over their last 19 games while batting .286 with runners in scoring position and averaging 4.6 runs per game. That 19-game stretch includes sweeps of the Marlins, the NL-West-leading Giants, and the formidable 23-17 Orioles. Their only series loss in that span was against the Rays, who swept the three-game set in Florida, but the Padres kept all three games close. They will be excited to return home to Petco Park, where they have won 9 of their last 10 games in front of the home crowd

Tonight's crowd at Petco Park, however, might have some conflicting rooting interests. Hometown boy and former SDSU star pitcher Stephen Strasburg will make his return to San Diego to make his first career start at Petco Park. He has one start against the Padres under his belt, which took place at Nationals Park in May of 2012. He surrendered four runs on seven hits, only lasting four innings and taking the loss, but striking out five batters in the process. Though this will be his first outing at Petco Park as a major leaguer, Strasburg pitched here previously at the college level when SDSU took on UC Davis in April of 2009. He led the Aztecs to a 14-0 win while striking out six. Amazingly it was his first time in seven starts that he failed to reach double-digits in strikeouts, but he dominated nonetheless and was backed by some incredible run support from his SDSU teammates.

Unfortunately for Strasburg, he hasn't gotten the same kind of support from his Washington teammates, who have provided a meager 2.47 run support average, one of the lowest in the league, this season. They've only scored 13 runs during his current career-long 7-game winless streak, over which he's posted a 3.61 ERA while collecting 48 strikeouts through 42 1/3 innings. Strasburg now sits at 1-5 after his most recent start, which began as one of his best of the season but ended in disaster. He retired the first 11 batters he faced (six by strikeout) and kept the Cubs to one hit while throwing just 53 pitches through his first four innings. But after a 2-out error by Ryan Zimmerman, Strasburg unraveled and went on to give up four unearned runs while throwing 42 pitches in the 5th inning alone. A win in front of his hometown would likely be a highlight of his season, so he'll be looking to redeem himself in front of his family, friends, and fans in San Diego and hopes to get the offensive and defensive support from his team to back him up.

05/15 Padres Preview: Game 39 @ Orioles

The Padres go for another series sweep today as they wrap up the two-game series against the Orioles. Jason Marquis will try to lead San Diego to its second straight win. Marquis has won each of his last three starts and is coming off his longest outing of the year. He scattered five hits through eight innings of scoreless ball against the Marlins. He only got one run of support in that game, but thankfully it was all he needed for the win. But the Padres' offensive woes have been troublesome lately. Over their last five games, they've hit just .185 as a team while striking out 57 times.

Hopefully they'll fare better today against the familiar face of Freddy Garcia. After spending Spring Training with the Padres and failing to secure a spot in the rotation, Garcia signed with the O's and began the season playing in Triple-A Norfolk. He made his O's debut on May 4th, taking a no-hitter into the seventh inning but not factoring into the decision. Today he'll look to earn his first win of the season and improve on an already successful career against San Diego. He is 4-2 with a 2.51 ERA in nine games against the Padres, but hasn't faced them in eight years.

05/14 Padres Preview: Game 38 @ Orioles

An off day yesterday following a sweep by the Rays has the Padres itching to get back on the field and back in the win column. They'll get the chance today as they continue interleague play with a brief two-game series at Camden Yards against the Orioles.

San Diego will look to Andrew Cashner, coming off the best start of his career, to end their losing streak. Cashner pitched a career-high 7 1/3 innings of shutout four-hit baseball against the Marlins at Petco Park his last time out, earning his second win of the year. The young right-hander will be facing Baltimore for the first time today. They've had a recent offensive outburst, scoring a combined 20 runs on 41 hits over the weekend in their series victory over the Twins. They've won six of their last eight games and are just one game back of first place in the AL East.

The Padres, on the other hand, have now lost three straight after going on a stretch of 11-3 baseball. Despite the Padres having a lead in each game at Tropicana Field over the weekend, the Rays swept the three-game set to put even more distance between San Diego and the top of the NL West. Batters struck out 38 times during the series, the most since the Padres played the Yankees in 2008.

Hopefully the offense can fare better today against Chris Tillman. Although the O's rotation hasn't exactly been solid this season (pitching to the tune of a collective 4.70 ERA, one of the highest in the league) Tillman has been one of their stronger starters. He is coming into today's matchup having won three straight games, while posting a 2.03 ERA and averaging more than 6 1/3 innings over his last four. He will also be making his first career start against the Padres.

The Padres have lost their first series since April 23rd and find themselves trying to avoid a sweep today in the finale in St. Petersburg. Tampa Bay are now winners of four straight games, but Eric Stults will try to put a halt to their momentum in his first career outing against the Rays. Stults has pitched a couple of solid starts coming into today's matchup. Over his last two games, he's kept opponents to three runs in 13 innings of work.

He'll have to find a way to quiet Evan Longoria's bat. The third baseman led the Rays to a walkoff victory with his two-run homer off Huston Street yesterday. Over a 14-game stretch, Longoria is batting .424 and has driven in 15 runs. But he's not the only dangerous bat in Tampa Bay's lineup. As a team, the Rays are averaging 6.6 runs per game, hitting .279 (including 17 home runs) in their last 13 games.

On the other hand, despite scoring seven runs yesterday, the Padres offense has struggled at the plate lately. They've racked up 39 strikeouts through three games. Nick Hundley, who had an impressive April campaign, has struck out seven times in his last 20 at-bats. Carlos Quentin has whiffed four times in his last six at-bats and has gotten only one hit (a home run) in his last 24.

Quentin, however, has had some past success against today's opponent, going 3-for-9 all-time with two homers off Roberto Hernandez. Hernandez has been solid at home this season. In two starts at the Trop, he's collected 14 strikeouts while limiting opponents to just two runs through 12 innings. This will be his first time facing San Diego.

05/11 Padres Preview: Game 35 @ Rays

The Padres will try to bounce back today and even up the series in St. Petersburg. Burch Smith will be making his Major League debut against the Rays in place of Clayton Richard. Smith's dominance in the minors this season prompted the Padres to promote him to the major league level. This season he made just six starts in Double-A San Antonio and went 1-2, but collected 37 strikeouts and pitched to the tune of a 1.15 ERA for the Missions.

Smith will have quite a task ahead of him in his debut today, as he'll be pitching against a team that has averaged 6.5 runs while batting a collective .297 over a 12-game stretch.

The Rays will send Jeremy Hellickson to the hill and hope he'll have better luck than his last outing. He tossed three scoreless innings with a 7-0 cushion before giving up three runs. The bullpen wasn't any help as they gave away the rest of the lead and then some. The Blue Jays went on to beat the Rays 8-7. But last night it was Tampa Bay that came back from behind to take the series opener from Edinson Volquez after San Diego started with a 3-0 lead.

This will be Hellickson's first career start against the Padres, who are now 16-19 and 4 1/2 games out of first place after going 10-4 in their last 14 games.

The Padres will be riding a four-game winning streak coming into today's matchup in St. Petersburg, where they will open up interleague play with a series against the Rays. During the winning streak, Padres pitchers have been nails, allowing only two runs combined on 21 hits. Edinson Volquez will try to continue that trend and build on his own recent success. He has seen quite a turnaround since opening up his season with three straight losses and an ERA of 11.68. He has now gone 3-0 with a 2.49 ERA over his last four starts. Most recently, he kept the Diamondbacks to just one run on four hits while walking three and fanning three over 6 2/3 innings of work. As he steps on the mound today, he will go for his fourth straight win, which would be a career-high for him. He is mostly unfamiliar pitching against the Rays, with just one game of experience in his arsenal. In 2011, he led the Reds to a victory at Tropicana Field by allowing three runs on four hits in 6 1/3 innings.

Volquez will be facing a red-hot Tampa Bay offense that has racked up 72 runs in their last 11 games. In that span, they've hit 15 home runs while batting a collective .301. Kelly Johnson, who is hitting .400 during the 11-game stretch, is a career 4-for-12 with a double and 2 RBI against Volquez. Evan Longoria is 1-for-3 with a double and 2 RBI against Volquez and has been one of the biggest keys in the Rays' offensive front. He's batting .431 with seven doubles, a triple, and three home runs while walking six times and collecting 12 RBI over his last 12 games. James Loney, who is no stranger to Padres pitching as he spent six years with the Dodgers before being traded in 2012, is hitting .449 with six doubles and 8 RBI over his last 13 games. However, he is just a career 1-for-9 against Volquez.

Padres batters have been hot lately as well. Chase Headley is riding a 13-game hitting streak, over which he's hit .400 with seven doubles, two home runs, six runs scored, and 7 RBI. As a team, they've averaged about 4.5 runs per game over a stretch of 14 games in which they've gone 11-3. Since starting the season at 2-10, they've worked their way back and now find themselves just 2 games under .500 and 3.5 games out of first place in the NL West.

Tonight they'll be facing a new opponent in Alex Cobb, who will make his first career start against San Diego. Cobb has gone 4-2 with a 2.79 ERA on the season and has won all three of his starts at home. His last outing at Tropicana Field was probably his best start of the season. He tossed 8 1/3 scoreless innings while limiting the Yankees to just three hits.

Now just three games under .500, the Padres will go for their third sweep of the season today as they close out the home series against the Marlins. Jason Marquis will be tasked with continuing the solid stretch of successful starting pitching that allowed just one run through the first two games of this series. Marquis is coming off two consecutive wins and a solid start to his 2013 season. The righty has kept opposing teams to three runs or fewer in five of his six starts, including his most recent, a six-inning three-run effort against the Diamondbacks last Friday. He'll be looking to improve on a career 6-6 record against Miami.

Ricky Nolasco will be looking for a little more support from his offense as he makes his eighth start of the season. Nolasco had his own two-game winning streak going when he took the mound in his last start. But he allowed three home runs (four runs total) on eight hits in six innings. The Marlins have lost five of Nolasco's seven previous starts, but it hasn't been entirely his fault. Hitters have only given him 15 total runs of support over his 41 1/3 innings of work this season. He'll try to get back on the right foot at Petco Park, where he's seen some success in the past. He's 4-0 with a 1.82 in his last four starts in San Diego, each of which saw him pitching into the seventh inning.

Nolasco might have some trouble keeping the red-hot Padres off the board, however. Winners of 10 of their last 13 games, the Padres have been seeing production from every spot in the lineup. Chase Headley continued his hitting streak last night and looks to extend it to 13 games today. Against Nolasco, Headley is a career 4-for-12 with a double and a homer. Will Venable has only gone 3-for-13 against him, but two of those hits were home runs. Yonder Alonso has also hit well against him, batting 3-for-5 all-time with a homer. But it's Mark Kotsay who has had the most success all-time against the right-hander Nolasco, hitting 8-for-13 with a double, triple, and home run.

Thanks to a stretch of 9-3 baseball over their past 12 games, the Padres have climbed their way out of the NL West cellar. Now they'll try to build on that and stay out of last place, starting tonight in the second of three games against the Marlins.

The Padres will give the ball to Eric Stults, coming off one of his best starts of the season. Last Thursday he pitched 6 2/3 innings against the Cubs, giving up two runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out four. The Padres won that game, as well as his previous start (which was considerably worse), but he didn't factor into the decision in either and hasn't recorded a win since April 15th. It's been a while since Stults has faced tonight's opponent. The last time was back in 2009 when he was a member of the Dodgers. In three career appearances (two starts) against Miami, he is 0-1 with a 4.50 ERA.

Marlins starter, Alex Sanabia, is facing the Padres for the first time in his career tonight, but is no stranger to San Diego. Sanabia was born and raised in America's Finest City, going to Castle Park High School in Chula Vista before being drafted by the Marlins in 2006. He is 2-4 on the season and comes into tonight's game having lost a career-high three straight despite his 4.93 run support average.

Chase Headley and Jedd Gyorko continue to mash at the plate for San Diego. Headley leads the team batting .348 and will try to extend his hitting streak to 12 games tonight. Gyorko has homered back-to-back games coming into tonight's contest and has gone .326 over a 12-game stretch. After going 1-7 over their first eight games at Petco Park this season, the Padres have evened it up and have gone 7-1 over their last eight at home.
