Bold Draft Predictions (don't worry this is not a mock draft)
Hypothetical post-draft issue
On several mock drafts I have been reading that the Lions may possibly take a defensive end with the 13th pick in this years NFL draft. This is because many people have the top 2 corners (peterson and amukamara) off the board when the Lions are up. Seeing as this year's draft class appears to be deeper at defensive end more than any other position makes picking (if they fall to us) a daquan bowers, cameron jordan, or ryan kerrigan seem like the best options. Are they? Lets just say for kicks that many of our mock drafts come relatively true. Julio Jones (washington), Prince Amukamara (san fransico/houston), Tyron Smith (dallas), and Von Miller (buffalo/denver/arizona) are all off the board. The rumors have been circulating that the Lions have some interest in Bowers. Ok, so we draft him. What now? We will be going into training camp with a slew of defensive ends on the roster. Someone, most likely, will have to be cut. My issue that I'm bringing up is who should we cut? I personally don't want to see any of these guys go. Also, I don't think its fair to put someone like Willie Young on the practice squad. Below is a poll. I want to see who is expendable in your minds. Or is it even a good idea for the Lions to put themselves in a situation like this?
I would like to hang on to the guys we have. In a perfect world, if this situation came up I would like the lions to trade back and get a guy like ayers or jimmy smith. I am opposed to the idea of getting another defensive lineman early in the draft. I think as a team that needs to fill just a few more holes to make a playoff push, we should worry about making depth on the roster (especially this early in the draft) after our positions of need are filled. Even if that means reaching for a guy like Jimmy Smith.
Sports Nation, you've failed!
Hopefully some of you are familiar with the show Sports Nation on ESPN2. In the past year or so I've become a fan ever since they had Dan LeFevour on as a guest. Tonight I watched an hour long special episode where they did the year in review thing. Basically the whole show consisted of the top 101 "jeers", or bad plays in sports. I sat there for an entire 50 minutes laughing along with the hosts at the top bloopers of the year. I was excited to see what could have possibly topped the list. I was let down and actually infuriated when they revealed the #1 jeer. Our good buddy Brett Favre topped the list. It wasn't a single play but his entire 2010 season. Now I wonder, what the hell has ESPN so infatuated with this guy?!! He's a scum bag! He sends pictures of his willy to his co-worker behind his wife's back and is still idolized! I had high hopes for Sports Nation. It was different, it was fresh and most of all it had potential. But now I see it's just like all the other crap shows ESPN shoves down our throats. I do not plan on watching in the future so as to not help ratings and stop this Bret Favre shit. Maybe I'll be able to turn on sports center or something once Bret Favre is finally gone (like that'll ever happen). I just wanted to know if anyone else saw this. I wondered if anyone was as pissed as me. I've been sick of Bret Favre for the last few years but now this was just the straw that broke the camel's back. I seriously hope the next and LAST thing we hear on Favre is how he got flattened by Suh and the disassembly line (or whatever the hell they're called).
*on a side note, I seriously thought the Jim Joyce call on Galarraga would be number one which may have also led to more anger at Farve and the four letter network.
Gunther's thoughts and a douche from Chicago
Good evening guys! I've got two things that I'm "burning" on tonight that I wanted to share. First off here is an article that really gets my blood boiling all over again. Second of all here is another ridiculous article written by some douche bag in Chicago that I think just fuels my hate for that franchise and its fans.
My reflections on the Gunther comments: I'm glad at least some person has a pair in this organization, even if it is only a coordinator. I'm not going to say whether or not I'm disappointed in the way Schwartz handled the Suh fine because I'm still kind of in the middle. However, I don't mind that Gunther said what he said. He obviously thinks the fine is B.S. Now here is the real stick in my ass in all of this. Kyle Vanden Bosch, arguably our second best defensive player (behind Suh of course), was sidelined for the remainder of the season because of an illegal crack-back block. This occurred against the Patriots and wasn't called. Seriously?!!? I don't remember any team in recent history that has been screwed as much as the 2010 Lions have. If I were the owner of this franchise (notice I'm not saying head coach) I'd be throwing shit all over, cursing out the refs, Goodell, everyone! For God's sake what the heck is with us ALWAYS getting butt f***ed by the officiating. It's like we've been dealt 4 jokers in a poker hand, It's bordering impossible! For now it's very hard for me to look at this season objectively after seeing the crap cards we've been dealt. I can't say one way or the other really if Schwartz is cut out to be a head coach. I can't even say we've improved as a team. This whole season has just been a waste of time and energy for us.
Speaking of waste's of time, here is my reflections on the Chicago douche: This guy is just a stupid SOB. He titles his article "Attention Detroit Lions: I hear they're looking for a team in LA." If you decide to read past this abortion's title you will see that he believes the Lions are awful, despite what experts say, and that Schwartz is outmatched as a coach by the Lovie Smith. Ok, fine, that's his opinion which he really doesn't decide to back with any facts. If you skip all his Bear's reflection mumbo jumbo you'll also see he does believe the Suh hit was a justified penalty. What's his reason? Suh INTENDED to punch Cutler in the head. Last time I checked people don't punch with their palms spread open but that might just be me. Anyways, he is an annoying human being but obviously doesn't actually watch the games. I have a feeling that the Bear's vs. Lion's match-ups are going to be very interesting next year. So far it seems its the Chicago zebras we've been playing this season so it's obviously created a lot of bad blood. I've always hated the Bears and this arrogant prick is just another log on the fire.
Simpsons take another shot
I'm sure most people on here have seen the Simpsons at one point or another in their lives. I'm sure most would agree that it's been a pretty decent show throughout the years. On the newest episode the writers decided to take a shot at the Lions. This isn't even the first time they've done that! I believe it was a couple of seasons ago they had a devil version of Flanders wearing a Detroit Lions t-shirt. It really didn't make sense. In the latest episode they made a joke about pigeon racing. Moe says "if it moves you can bet on it." Bart replies "what about the Detroit Lions?" I forget what they said after that but I'm sure it was insulting. I think one of the writers must either really hate the Lions or must be a fan showing his frustration with the team by making fun of them. In any case I'm sick of being the butt of the joke. Especially on a world famous t.v. show like The Simpsons. Sadly there is nothing we can do. This organization needs wins to stop the bad jokes. But anyways, I thought I'd tell you all. This should probably be a fan shot but I never read those so I'm guessing many of you don't either.
Lions Novocaine
I think I speak for the fan base when I say we're had our share of losing. It was fun hell while it lasted but I'm about ready to move on and maybe actually make the playoffs or finish with a record that's not below .500. Here on POD for the most part I think we drink with the glass half full. It's nothing short of a miracle considering the absolute horse s*** we've had to deal with for the past decade. So in that optimistic view lets just stop worrying and bitching about this season and wait til' the next one. Our Christmas may be a while off yet but that doesn't mean we can't make a wish list! Our starting qb may be injured but that doesn't mean we can't evaluate the rest of the offense! Our lines may get more penalties than a prostitute has std's but that doesn't mean we can't root Suh onto defensive rookie of the year! Guys, we have many positives on this team moving forward. Best of all, most of them are not a reach. I'm not sitting here thinking Derrick Williams or BJ will be wr's of the future but I really like what I've see from Burleson and Pettigrew as of late. We still have a damn good qb just waiting to unleash his full talent. On top of that we have some nice pieces like Best, CJ, our entire d-line, the Phonz, Delmas, Levy, and oh ya, a boy named Suh. This season really has been a s*** storm but maybe the stars are still aligning for greater things? Maybe we get Patrick Peterson and have a shut down d. The point I'm trying to make in all this rambling is that we just need to chill out the rest of the season. Light up a doobie and relax until greater things arrive. We are too close to give in now.
Funny Stuff
I just read this article and found it pretty funny and also pathetic. What's funny is that Pete Carrol doesn't seem to know the first name of the recently traded for Tyler Polumbus. If anybody recalls the Lions had Polumbus on their roster just a couple short weeks ago. He was an Offensive tackle that more than likely wouldn't have made the team. Obviously Seattle saw something in him so they couldn't wait for him to be cut and traded an undisclosed draft pick for his services. Was it Mayhew's genius or was Seattle just overly desperate (probably both)? We may never know. Looking back though, it's a win for the Lions. I suggest you all read the short article and you too might get a good chuckle.
Ko Simpson is Gone
Just saw the Adam Schefter twitter post. I guess we'll be keeping CC Brown. I kinda figured this considering we didn't hear Simpson's name too much the last few weeks. A former Lion, Travis Fisher was cut by the Ravens today. Also, Pat White is cut by the Dolphins. Any possibility of a Wild Lion (wild cat) offense with best, white and brown? Who knows! Just throwing it out there. Any thoughts?
More on the OJ Atogwe Front
Hey guys, I was just doing my usual web browsing looking for the latest Lions news. Of course, with the recent release of Atogwe from the Rams I felt the need to do a little "googling" on him. What I found were a couple of signs that may point to a higher potential for the Lions signing him.
First off, the Cowboys may have ruled him out. Second, the Eagles are supposedly not interested. Finally, the Dolphins seem to have all the help at safety that they need.
Now, I'm not sure how convinced I am by these sources but if these teams are hesitating in the least to go after him then we have that much better of a shot at getting him ourselves. I also read an article the other day, which by now I'm sure some of you have read. Here. Again, I am not entirely sure on the credibility of all of these articles but they make me excited to hear we have a shot.
I want Atogwe to join our secondary and help out this team. I think with our new revamped d-line he can be given time to do some damage. I don't think our chances are as slim as some people have said, and I don't think he would be so opposed to playing for the Lions now considering we've added a lot of talent in this off season. Of couse, we can only speculate and hope for the best for this team. Thanks for reading!
Some Good News On Cliff Avril
I just read on MLive that Cliff Avril has been showing some promise by upping his intensity this off season. The article written by Tom Kowalski, also said that some rumor has been going around saying he was traded to Miami for a 5th rounder. Apparently its not true at all and the Lions are in fact very happy with Avril. Also, it says he added 10 pounds in muscle already this off season which really helps him a lot. I hope this means we can have a solid pass rushing defensive end opposite KVB next year. I've always been a supporter of Avril whether we keep him at DE or move him to LB. I think he has promising talent and I'm happy to hear this. This also probably means that the Lions will not be looking to upgrade the D-line anymore in this draft. We'll just have to wait and see I guess.
Kevin Jones Released by the Bears
I'm surprised nobody has mentioned his name since his release. According to the Chicago Sun Times, Kevin Jones was released from the Bears a few days ago. I was just wondering, with the Lions lack of veteran backup help for Kevin Smith and the lack of free agent running backs, would it be a good move to bring Kevin in for a one year contract to be a backup? I'm against it for a couple of reasons. One, I think he is way to injury prone and would be a waste if he was injured again in the pre-season. Two, I don't think he is the correct alternative for the Lions in obtaining a running back because the draft is really where they should find one. Maybe someone can convince me otherwise.
DeAngelo Williams a Lion?
I'm sure many of you have already read on MLive, or some other Lions news source that the Lions may be looking to trade for Carolina Panther's running back DeAngelo Williams this offseason. Tom Kowalaski believes that the Lions may be willing to part with their second round pick (34th overall) for Williams. I'm not sure if this rumor has any steam to it or if it is all just wishful thinking by some fans. I for one think it would be great to see D. Williams in a Lions jersey next season so he can play alongside Kevin Smith to make a very threatening running tandem.
DeAngelo Williams will be entering his fourth season in the NFL in 2010. He has already compiled some pretty impressive statistics with the Panthers rushing for over 1,000 yards the last two seasons and 18 touchdowns only two seasons ago. Even with the arrival of Jonathan Stewart he has been effective and a threat to opposing defenses. With the Lions he could do some damage. That would also give us a proven commodity instead of whoever we would be getting with our second round pick. So, what are your thoughts on getting Williams to Detroit? Thanks for reading my post.
McCoy to the Rams? Suh to the Lions?
I just noticed on a couple of different sites they are reporting that Todd McShay has Gerald McCoy going 1st overall to the St. Louis Rams in his latest mock draft. Of course this leaves the Lions taking Ndamukong Suh with the 2nd overall pick. I for one am still on the Suh bandwagon, even with all of the hype of Gerald McCoy. Either way I want the Lions to get one of these guys with their 1st round pick. What do you all think? Is it possible the Rams take McCoy over the "House of Spears"? If they do, should the Lions still take Suh with the 2nd pick? What do you all think?
New QB for the Lions
After this past season it's evident that the Lions have no talent at quarter back outside of Matt Stafford. What I am proposing is picking up a seasoned veteran at the position in the offseason. For example a Chad Pennington of the Miami Dolphins or a Kyle Boller of the Rams. Plus you've always got the choices of several possible trades for one. I would like to know who people think would best fit the veteran backup role. Also with the usual crop of quarterbacks coming out for this year's draft I would like to know who people think we can draft maybe in the 5th-7th rounds. If Tebow, LeFevour, or, say, Pike were to fall who would you get?
