Arizona Desert Swarm Arizona Quick Hits: March 14, 2011

Two former Wildcats are on the ballot for the College Football Hall of Fame.  Tedy Bruschi and Rob Waldrop have a chance to become part of an elite few players by being elected into the Hall.  The decision should come in May.   Bruschi was a two-time all American in 1994 and 1995 and tied the NCAA record for career sacks with 52.  Rob Waldrop was also a two-time all American in 1992 and 1993. He was the winner of the Bednarik, Nagurski and Outland awards and Pac-10 Defensive Player of the Year in 1993.

Arizona took out Oregon State in the Quarterfinals of the Pac-10 Tournament.

Arizona went on to eliminate USC in a tough matchup.

Unfortunately, the Cats couldn't finish against Washington on Saturday night and lost on Isaiah Thomas' last minute shot.  This one was a tough one and Coach Miller took the brunt of the responsibility after the game.

Word is that Nic Grigsby's stock rose dramatically at timing day.  Check out the story on Azstarnet.com to see the full stats on his day.  Hint: 43.5 inch vertical = impressive.

Arizona Desert Swarm Arizona 78 vs. Oregon State 69 Recap

LOS ANGELES, CA - MARCH 10: Derrick Williams #23 of the Arizona Wildcats shoots a three-pointer against the Oregon State Beavers in the second half in the quarterfinals of the 2011 Pacific Life Pac-10 Men's Basketball Tournament at Staples Center on March 10, 2011 in Los Angeles, California. (Photo by Stephen Dunn/Getty Images)

The top seeded Cats took care of Oregon State 78-69 in front of a boring crowd of 10,782 at Staples Center in Los Angeles.  Derrick Williams scored 22 points on 8-12 shooting and hit 5 of 6 three pointers.  WHHHHHHHHHHAAAAAAAAAAATTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT.  Who saw that coming?  Not me.  That is incredible.

The Cats hit three 3-pointers in a row to start the second half and quickly held a 10 point lead with 17:41 left in the 2nd half.  Oregon State tried to keep it close but was unable to close the gap as the Cats poured on the pressure and continued to match basket for basket with the Beavers.  The Cats took a 17 point lead with 7:50 left in the half and that was all she wrote.  The Beavers weren't able to make a game out of it after that.

Arizona Desert Swarm Arizona 85 vs. UCLA 74 Quick React

The Arizona Wildcats turned a close 1st half game into a blowout by routing the UCLA Bruins 85-74.  The Cats led the Bruins 38-33 after the first half.  The second half was a different story.  Arizona came out blazing with a quick 5-0 run credited to a three pointer by Derrick Williams and a bucket by Jesse Perry.  Once the Cats got going, they never looked back.

Arizona Desert Swarm Breaking News: Duane Akina to Arizona

Duane Akina

Breaking news out of Austin this morning as the Texas Longhorns lose another coach in the wake of their worst season under Mack Brown.  Duane Akina will join the Cats as their new defensive backs coach starting immediately.  Duane Akina was the defensive backs coach at Arizona under Dick Tomey and has an incredible resume.

Texas has produced incredible talent in the secondary in the last 10 years including Michael Huff (Raiders), Quentin Jammer (Chargers), Cedric Griffin (Vikings), Michael Griffin (Titans), Earl Thomas (Seahawks) and Aaron Williams who enters this years draft as a top prospect.

The Cats will try to make it 2-0 in conference play tonight against the Beavers of Oregon State.  Oregon State is 6-6 overall and 1-0 in conference play after beating Arizona State 80-58 on December 30.   The Cats will look to take down the Beavers who swept them last year by applying unbelievable zone pressure on defense.  Azstarnet broke it down so if you want to see how we're going to beat it tonight (which we will) take a peek over at their article here. Also, keep an eye on Jared Cunningham who is averaging 13.6 ppg and is shooting 50% from the floor.

Solomonhill
(Looking for revenge)

The line is currently set at Arizona -8.5.

I took Oregon State to cover but definitely think the Cats will win this one.

Check out www.buildingthedam.com for Oregon State news and preview.

Arizona Desert Swarm Arizona 10 vs. Oklahoma State 36 Recap

OSU Romps Arizona

What a terrible way for the Cats to end their season.  Arizona fell to Oklahoma State 36-10 in front of 57,593 fans, most of whom were sporting the road hazard orange.  Walking around San Antonio yesterday felt like being in Stillwater.  The Oklahoma State faithful outnumbered the Cats fans at least 25 to 1 and maybe more.  It wasn't a factor for either team as the Alamodome had plenty of empty seats and crowd noise was weak for both schools.

Arizona Desert Swarm Arizona vs. Oklahoma State Preview

Alamo Bowl

Only one more day before the Arizona Wildcats strap it on and take on the Cowboys from Oklahoma State.  Both teams seem to underestimate the other's big play potential and relatively little is known about either squad by their respective opponent.  Oklahoma State was picked to finish deep in the Big XII, they stunned everyone (except their own fans) and won 10 games this season.  Unfortunately, they were unable (again) to beat Oklahoma at home and instead of facing Nebraska in the Big XII Championship, they waited like everyone else to get their bid to their bowl.   They are primed and ready to show the nation that they are the real deal.
