this is the kind of thing i love. some real live hype about our minor leaguers is putting a little hop in my step today. it's not like we've been ignored over the years - hell, we've barely had anybody who warranted a second look on the farm. and i know this is just the Hot Sheet, so it seems like a really short term look. but still, 3 out of 5 ain't bad. i'm freaking psyched.

so, everybody already knows about wieters. he's nasty and he needs to be in bowie soon. 3 for 4 with two home runs tonight, tied for the league lead in homers, lots to like there. but that's not who i'm excited about tonight.

i'm excited about chris tillman. the kid is 20 years old. tonight, he threw six innings of 1 hit ball. he's walking too many people, but i repeat, he's 20 years old. and he's tearing it up in AA to the tune of 3-0 record, 2.87 e.r.a., 1.18 whip, and 29 Ks in 31 innings. i know i'm laying down a huge jinx on this kid right now and he's young and could get hurt or never pull it together after facing some adversity or whatever... but there's a decent chance that we look back and say "tillman for bedard straight up would have been better for us than them." jones is going to be a nice piece for the outfield for a long time, but tillman is going to make that trade the heist of the decade for us.

I'll be in NYC tomorrow night (Thursday) for business and I want to find a place to watch the game. I'm staying at the Empire Hotel - 44 West 63rd St. so I'd like to find something sort of close. Any suggestions?

Thanks!

And apparently this post isn't long enough so I'd also like to point out that Millar, Mora, Ramon, and Luis are a disgrace. I like our pitching staff though.

This is a hard look at Baltimore and a nicer look at Cal back in 1996. The first few pages are a little tough to read since I don't really enjoy people making negative comments about Baltimore, especially when the city has really turned itself around quite nicely in the last 12 years. I thought you guys might be interested though.

"Anyway, there aren't any Josh Hamiltons out there this year, and there probably aren't any Joakim Sorias, either. Most years, not a single Rule 5 draftee makes a significant contribution. Will any of this year's? Teams generally don't leave promising young hitters or starting pitchers exposed, which means we're basically looking at relievers who were way, way down on the organizational depth charts, often because of shaky control.

I do like one guy: Baltimore's Randor Bierd, a Dominican right-hander who spent most of last season in the Double-A Eastern League and, including a short stint in Class A, struck out 81 batters and walked only 16. According to Baseball America, he throws a low-90s sinker and a hard slider, and I don't see any obvious reason why he can't at least survive with the Orioles for six months, after which he's theirs to keep."

Rob Neyer's blog today lists his top right fielders over the next 5 years. I thought he'd be top 3 or 4, but it's nice to see him get the number 1 spot...

http://insider.espn.go.com/espn/blog/index?name=neyer_rob

And the top RFs over the next 5 years are ...

Nick Markakis

Corey Hart

Matt Kemp

well, i think i'm done for the year. i know i don't post much on here, but i read a lot of the posts on here 4-6 days a week. i just can't take it anymore. i've been to around 15 games this season, down from the 20-25 of the previous two seasons and i just can't stomach sitting out there again this year. i hit rock bottom this afternoon when i sat in the centerfield bleachers in the heat, watched an inning of a major league team against a minor league team, and said "this sucks, do you want to go home?" to my wife. my wife (a former ball girl and generally a die-hard fan as well) couldn't wait to get out of there too, so we left. after 1 freaking inning. at some point i would have been upset with myself, but not this year. we're just done this season, they've used up every ounce of my patience and i don't have anything left.

you can call me a quitter i guess, or even mourn the loss of another fan (until spring training, i will be back). but at the end of the day, i simply have less miserable ways to spend my money and my time. i just can't put another dime into something that makes me sick to my stomach. the last 10 years of orioles "magic" are an embarassment to the city i've lived in or near for the majority of my 30 years. we're a joke on sportscenter, a punchline and a punching bag for the rest of the country.

tejada leads this team with 14 home runs. that's brutal. nobody has a .400 obp. nobody comes close to a .900 ops. not a single batter on this team is close to being a great player or a franchise player. it's a pitiful group of has-beens and never-will-be's and i just can't watch anymore.

we're about to have 10 straight years of losing seasons in the bag, and what do we have to show for it? a bunch of blue chip minor leaguers? a great foundation? not really. we have a few talented chips to play with, but nothing like we should have after years of top 10 draft picks. Below are our top picks since 1997.

Darnell McDonald
Jayson Werth
Rick Elder
Brian Roberts
Scott Rice
Joshua Cenate
Keith Reed
Larry Bigbie
Richard Stahl
Mike Paradis
Nelson Johnson
Beau Hale
Brian Bass
Mike Fontenot
Chris Smith
Adam Loewen
Nick Markakis
Wade Townsend
Garrett Olsen
Brandon Snyder

sorry to bring everybody down. i'll see you guys in february. thanks for your passion and knowledge about the orioles this year. i'm out for a while, i have a baltimore team with competetant ownership and management to follow for the next 5 months. something tells me i won't be alone.

joe

I like this kid. He followed up his first start (a perfect 5 innings with 9 Ks) with 5 innings, 3 hits, 2 walks, 1 run, and 5 Ks. He's like 22 I think, so I'd imagine if he's the real deal that he won't have a long path to the majors. I think I'm just going to start following the Shorebirds instead of the Orioles. Rowell and Snyder are there as well and both are doing OK so far.

It's stupid to even care about this probably, but the O's second pick in this year's draft had a pretty sweet debut last night in Delmarva. 5 innings, no hits, no walks, 9 strikeouts. I know, first outing and all that, but 9 Ks and no walks are pretty impressive numbers. Oh, and his 6 non strikeouts were all ground balls.

http://theshorebirds.com/fanzone/stats/index.html?autoload=boxscore&gid=2007_06_25_delafx_lwdafx _1&sportcode=afx
