Pac 10 Mega-Preview WSU & UW, Blue Ribbon Style

I think we are all getting pretty excited for the upcoming basketball season.  One of the many fun previews put out every year is the Blue Ribbon preview, usually posted on ESPN.com for those with...

Eastern Playoff Ban lifted by NCAA

+

Well, not sure if anyone cares that much about Eastern Washington football, but it's nice to see that the NCAA reversed their original ruling on banning EWU from the playoffs. I am sure there is a way to relate this to Wulff in here somewhere.

Is football too violent? Is the risk too high?

+

Malcolm Gladwell, the author of Blink, The Tipping Point and Outliers, has written a very thoughtful and well-researched article on head injuries in the NFL. Studies are showing greatly increased risk of dementia in retired NFL players, especially offensive linemen. It's worth your time to read.

Jon Brockman drafted in the 2nd round

+

Well, I know this isn't strictly Cougar news, but if there has been one Husky in recent years that I really wished was a Coug, it was Brockman. Also, since he's now off to the big leagues, I don't feel like I have any reason to dislike him anymore, and I can admire his work ethic and tenaciousness and so on and so forth. He has been an excellent player the last few years and I am glad to see him drafted. Anyone think he'll be better than Spencer Hawes by the end of the year?

It'll be made official soon that Seattle Pacific coach Jeff Hironaka is leaving to become an assistant at Washington State, where he will again work with his former boss, Ken Bone. Hironaka has been the head coach at SPU since 2002 when Bone left to become an assistant at UW. He is 134-67 at SPU. Hironaka's hiring fills out the staff at WSU, the others being former UW player Curtis Allen and holdover Ben Johnson, giving the Cougars a strong contingent of coaches with Seattle-area ties. This could also impact the Huskies as it's possible that assistants Paul Fortier and Jim Shaw could be approached about taking over for Hironaka. (Bob Condotta, Seattle Times)

Baynes to play in Portsmouth Invitational Tournament

Aron Baynes will be one of five Pac 10 players to compete in the Portsmouth Invitational Tournament, April 8th - 11th.  This presumably is Aron's last chance to impress scouts before (hopefully)...

Brooks explained Weaver’s assignment to the Tulsa 66ers Friday by saying it’s simply an opportunity for the rookie guard to get more playing time. Weaver was averaging 19.6 minutes over his past five games with the Thunder. He figures to be getting twice that in Tulsa while also having an opportunity to have the ball in his hands more, play some minutes at point guard and have more freedom to develop his game. "He’s going to be able to play there two games and only miss one game here," said Brooks, indicating Weaver is likely to be recalled prior to Sunday’s game against Indiana. "I like what he has done for us, and he will continue to improve because he is a great worker. But he’s getting minutes down there and it helps when you get minutes. I know he was getting 16, 17 minutes up here, but he’s getting 40 minutes down there. I thought he did a good job. He was filling up the stat sheet. They didn’t win the game, but I thought his numbers and his play was pretty good. So he’s just getting an opportunity to play extra minutes."

Aron Baynes will play Friday in NABC All Star Game

Aron Baynes gets one more game to impress NBA scouts as part of the Final Four festivities. He's playing on the Hershey's Team, along with such notable seniors as Justin Dentmon, Diamon Simpson (ugh, haven't we seen enough of that guy lately?), and New American Hero Ben Woodside. The opposing team, Reese's Team, features Alfred Aboya, Mendez-Valdez from WKU, Heytvelt and a couple other names I recognize. The game will be televised at 1:35pm on Friday on CBS College Sports.

Pac 10 Names Larry Scott New Commissioner

Well, we have a new commissioner, and he's the former CEO of the Women's Tennis Association. Other than that I have no idea of what to think about this guy.

DJ Gallo psuedo-live blog (funny)

+

This is probably funnier to read after he finishes the blog, but DJ Gallo (for ESPN) is live blogging all the games and its pretty funny. I usually enjoy his humor, he's kind of quirky to be writing for ESPN. Here's a sample: "No. 6 Marquette (24-9) vs. No. 11 Utah State (30-4): This is not your typical No. 6 versus No. 11 game. Both teams are ranked in the top 25 of the ESPN/USA Today coaches poll. I think it's clear the selection committee does not respect USA Today."
