Washington State at Washington, 3/7- Think about this: If the Cougars can pull off the miracle in Seattle, they will have defeated UCLA, Arizona, Arizona State and Washington in consecutive games. Throw in two Pac-10 tournament wins, and they may have an interesting case.

Quality Mid-Majors vs. Middle Quality Majors

+

This is a very interesting (if short) article by Joe Lunardi at ESPN.com. Essentially he looks at the last 10 years of NCAA tournament results and compares middle-quality majors (receiving double-digit seeds) vs. supposed "mid-major" teams receiving equal seeding. While the result is not too suprising given the "cinderella" nature of the tournament, it certainly shows that more mid-major teams than you think are doing well, and presents a good argument for inclusion of such teams over middling BCS teams like USC or Notre Dame.

LA Times feature article on Rochestie

Inspired by his recent dominant performance, the LA Times' Bill Dwyre has a pretty good story on Taylor. I think most of it is stuff you've read before but it is cool to see him featured in an LA paper.

Rochestie Named Player of the Week!

3

Taylor Rochestie has won the Pac 10 Player of the Week award for his lights-out performance against the SoCal schools this weekend. For all his heroics against UCLA, don't forget against USC he had "16 points, adding five rebounds, four assists, one steal and just one turnover in 39 minutes of play. He led the team in scoring, rebounding, assists, steals and minutes played, becoming the first WSU player this season to lead the team in all five categories."

A Coug's response to the Wulff "scandal"

Oregon Post-Game thoughts

I thought I would put up a FanPost to complement Grady's recap of the game.  I was lucky enough to get to attend last night and so I am trying to point out things that perhaps were missed by radio...

"Klay was sensational despite our efforts to know where he was and get to him," ASU coach Herb Sendek said. "Every time he broke free, he made us pay dearly. "He has a pure, beautiful shot and no wasted motion. He has length, so he can get his shot over a number of smaller players, and he also can take it one or two bounces and get to his midrange game as well. He's a very good player."

hey, that title works two ways! Look, I'm not going to say that the USC game was terribly officiated or that we got robbed, but I want to point out one thing: If this game had been officiated in...

POLL TIME GUYS! After last night's disheartening result, though, um, heartening(?) effort, what would you choose for this year's Cougar team? NCAA Assuming: We more or less play as we have, get...

Pac 10 basketball slowing down

20

Basketball Prospectus has an article up about the Pac 10 becoming the slowest major conference in basketball. It's not just Bennett-Ball anymore - OSU, USC, ASU and UCLA all join us as teams averaging less than 60 possessions per game. The article is mostly in fun, though the author does point out that recruits may not be so excited to join us out west if this trend continues!

Kyle Weaver making good impressions!

+

Though he is doing it for that hated NBA team, Kyle Weaver is earning more playing time and becoming a coach favorite. Funny Quote from the coach: "He's a good shooter... He has range up until the 3-point line." HA! Don't we know about that. But he's still my favorite Coug ever and I'm glad he's doing well. HT:

Joe Lunardi has the Cougs in the NCAA's as the 4th rated team from the Pac 10, and a 10 seed overall. We're behind UCLA, ASU, and Arizona in order, and Cal is picked just after us as the last team from the Pac 10 to make the tourney. Just like with the KenPom ratings, I'll take that result but I'm not confident yet! Though if we actually finish 4th in the Pac 10 it seems like a fair result - but let's beat LSU first!

Pomeroy Scouting Reports UPDATED

9

Ken Pomeroy has put up his new scouting reports. His formulae predict Wazzu to go 21-9 in the regular season, including winning our next 9 games! I would certainly take that. We're currently rated 2nd in the Pac 10. So in all our doom and gloom about missing out on key non-con wins, at least statistically we are in a good position in-conference.

That Klay Thompson is the first Freshman to start a game since Koprivica did it a couple years ago? Man, have we gotten used to experience around here! Also, with our undefeated non-con (regular season) run last year, you have to go back to 12/2/2006 to find our last non-con loss - a stretch of 18 games and counting! More fun stats here.

Oregon is going to be a work in progress. But the Ducks probably didn't think they would be rebuilding through losses at home. The Ducks fell to Oakland (Mich.) and Johnathon Jones' 32 points Monday night. The more I see the Pac-10 results the more I'm convinced Washington State will finish no lower than fourth and make the NCAA tournament. The Cougars will win enough games in the league to warrant a bid.
