Happy Birthday Tec!!
So, today is Tec's birthday, and he's on his way to San Diego....
Thought it would be kind of cool, since he's one of GLB's "favorite" posters/flirts/idiots, if we all wished him happy birthday and posted our favorite Tec quote or conversation.
I know there are PLENTY of quotes in the Wiki credited to Tec, but I will go ahead and steal this one since I was in the OT where it first occurred.
SCHILLING???!?!?!?!?!
Trevor Tribute?
Read on the SDUT's website that there is going to be some sort of pre-game "ceremony/tribute" to #51. I'm not sure if Channel 4 will show any, or part of it, but if they do, could someone please post it to Youtube or something like that and post the link afterwards?
I recently moved out of state, and I subscribed to the MLB.tv package, but they do not show any of the pre or post game show.
Thanks in advance to anyone who can help out.
Peavy to Chicago??
I wasn't expecting this AT ALL when I signed onto SOSD tonight....
Apparently, there's an offer from the White Sox that Towers (and Peavy) are mulling over. No players are mentioned, and I couldn't find anything anywhere else on the usual suspects' websites (ESPN, FOX, MLBTR). I guess we'll just have to wait to see if anything comes of this latest rumor.
Discounted Tickets for Saturday 4/11
Here's a little gift for any of you who are thinking of going down to watch Peavy vs. Sanchez tomorrow night 4/11.
On the Padres.com page, go to Tickets (by clicking on the "T" for the 4/11 game) and click on Promotions. Enter the Promotional Code "ATT" and you'll get 50% off tickets in the following 4 seating sections:
Toyota Terrace Reserved = $25 (normally $50)
Field Reserved = $17 (normally $34)
Upper Infield Reserved = $10.50 (normally $21)
Upper Reserved = $7.50 (normally $15)
We (AT&T) are sponsoring the Adrian Gonzalez long sleeve t-shirt giveaway, so we're able to use this discount (while supplies last).
I hope some of you fellow GLB'ers can take advantage of this deal. Oh, and if an extra shirt somehow finds its way to me, I wouldn't be totally upset.
Little T / Hoffy Article
Found this on ESPN.com tonight.... another good read. It has a few little interesting tidbits, such as Alderson calling Mr Padre to ask him if he had interest in managing the team after Bochy went north, and how Little T hitched a ride back to San Diego from Milwaukee after game 162 last season.
Maddux Done After '08??
Doing my usual reading this morning, I came upon this article which quotes Maddux quite a few times alluding to the possibility that 2008 will be his last season.
If that's the case, I am just glad that we got a chance for 2 years to watch him pitch in a Padres uniform. When I was a little kid, I used to HATE getting tickets in advance to Braves/Padres games, and then find out that he was pitching because I knew the Padres were gonna lose, and I knew the game was only going to last about 2 hours(tops).
Anyways, here's the article:

KBot Deal / No arbitration
Well, after the not so good news of a couple weeks ago, it looks like the Padres will again avoid going to arbitration.
http://www.signonsandiego.com/sports/padres/20080202-1656-bbn-padres-greene.html
I don't recall how long it's been (I'm sure it will be in tomorrow's paper), but I for one LOVE that the team has not gone to arbitration with any of their players, especially a vital piece like KBot.
From everything I've heard/read in the past, those arbitration hearings can get quite ugly....imagine sitting across the table from your employer as he/she brings all of your "negative qualities" up. That can't possibly foster a positive ongoing relationship, hence the respect that I believe many players have for Padres ownership/front office.
Padres Awards Banquet
The Mrs and I went to the Annual Awards Banquet last night at the Manchester Grand Hyatt.
The program itself was long, drawn out, and a lil boring at times. Ted Leitner was the emcee and mentioned 3 or 4 times to one of the UCP (United Cerebral Palsy) folks from the Denver office, "Matt Holliday STILL has not touched home plate."
After the program was over, it got on to the good stuff. Just like the last time we went a few years ago, we were able to mingle with the players, coaches, and front office personnel that were there.
Had some cool (albeit brief) convos with Chase Headley, Matt Antonelli, Kooz, Jake, and Jake's grandpa from Alabama (a great guy!).
I'm attaching some pics, and including one for a particular Gaslamp Baller who may/may not have a mancrush.....

D-Bags Making Moves
Dan Haren is now a D-Bag in a 6 for 2 trade with Oakland headlined by Carlos Gonzalez.
Jose Valverde is heading to Houston in a 3 for 1 trade headlined by Chad Qualls.
D-Bags rotation is getting stronger!!
Headley (hopefully) Not Going Anywhere
I, for one, would be EXTREMELY disappointed if Chase is dealt, especially to Pittsburgh for an OF (Bay) who is coming off of an injury.
There's been a lot of talk about how Headley and Antonelli are as close to "untouchable" as ones could get in our system.
To that end, I ABSOLUTELY LOVE this quote from KT in Krasovic's most recent blog entry (http://www.signonsandiego.com/sports/weblog/2007/12/padres_and_pirates.html):
"I know that Pittsburgh loves Headley. We told them I don't know how many times we're not going to move Headley."
There are also some great indirect quotes from Alderson and Fuson in that same article.
KT...DO NOT TRADE CHASE!!! We have been waiting for years for our farm system to produce some positional talent (other than Khalil). He and Antonelli, until proven otherwise, are those guys!!!! I want to see those 2 in Petco Park fulltime no later than Opening Day 2009.
Tad Iguchi Is a Padre
1 year deal, pending a physical.
Just got back home from the Season Ticket Holder event, and KT announced this right after he told us all that Fukodome wasn't coming here.
Plan is for him to be a 1 year stopgap to get Antonelli some more ABs in the minors. But, it was also discussed that Antonelli might get some looks in CF based on his athleticism and speed.
More moves to come I am sure....
Rule 5 Draft
Update [2007-12-6 11:11:19 by jpleeg2]: My apologies....Crabbe is a second baseman, not a pitcher.
As KT and Alderson both alluded to in the last few days, the Padres picked up TWO arms in this morning's Rule 5 draft.
I don't have the time right now to look up info on these 2 guys, but since they have to stay on the 25 man roster throughout the season (unless they pass thru waivers or are injured), I'm guessing our pen is gonna have some changes (more than we all thought).
If anyone could look up some info, it'd be great.
Round 1:
Mike Gardner, who has a low 90s fastball, goes to the Padres; Gardner was in the Yankees organization.
Round 2:
The Padres took Callix Crabbe from the Brewers system in the second round.
I hope we can catch some lightning in a bottle with at least 1 of these guys, similar to what we did with KCam last season.
Peavy Extension Close?!?!
http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/7518156
According to sources, the deal would lock Jake up through 2012 and would start at the end of his current contract.
If the parameters being reported are correct, Peavy would earn $6M in 2008, $8M in 2009, and then the new contract would kick in, averaging between $17-17.5M for 2010-2012.
GREAT EFFIN NEWS!!!
Blummer Gone?
Figured this would happen, since he's not an "on the cheap" utility guy and he reportedly wanted to get a shot at more playing time.
Found this on MLB.com:
Elsewhere on the Hot Stove front Saturday:Astros: Houston has reportedly reached a verbal agreement with free-agent infielder Geoff Blum, a Houston television station reported Friday night.
KRIV-TV, citing Major League Baseball sources, reported Blum will rejoin the Astros, a team he played for in 2002-03 before Houston traded him to Tampa Bay for pitcher Brandon Backe. Blum's game-winning home run for the White Sox beat Houston in Game 3 of the 2005 World Series. He spent the last two seasons with San Diego.
Houston GM Ed Wade would not confirm the deal and Blum was not available for comment. In nine seasons in the Major Leagues, Blum has a career batting average of .251 with 71 home runs and 344 RBIs.
Rod Beck Article
Browsing around espn.com today, I saw this article, and decided to come back later to read it, since I was about to watch the Chargers beat the crap outta the Faiders again and didn't want to be bummed out.
So, I just got done reading the article.
Life and times of Rod "Shooter" Beck
It really is both a sad and an enlightening story, not only of how great a man Shooter was, but also gave some background to just how much his short time with the Padres had an effect on 2 of his bullpen mates.
I know this has been said before on here, but RIP Shooter!!
Milton on Best Damn Sports Show Period
Found this video on Foxsports.com
Milty was on with the BDSSP guys today. He still sounds VERY pissed off about the whole thing even though he says something to the effect of "I'm past it" towards the end of the conversation.
Oh, and another thing, Rodney Peete is a prick!! Listen for yourself to what he says to MB.

Update [2007-9-27 2:8:13 by jpleeg2]: I couldn't get either video to work for me on AOL, so you may want to copy paste the URL into Internet Explorer if you are an AOL user.
Hensley not ready to be that guy anymore
Just read this quote on the Padres website, and found it a bit amusing.
"I'm not ready to be that guy anymore," Hensley said of being sent down.
Look here Clay... like it or not, you ARE that guy right now.
Until you come up here and pitch like you did in the 2nd half of last season, you're not going to be kept on the major league roster and in the rotation just because you've been there before.
Seems like he has a severe sense of entitlement here.
I'm not sure of his contract situation, but I wouldn't be surprised to see KT either attempt to deal him or non-tender him this offseason.
Philly's Announcers
Found this on MLB.com:
It's the Phillies feed from when pussboy Ruiz barrel rolled into Marcus.
CY to Miss His Next Start
Just read this on the Padres website.
Apparently CY made his way back to SD today to see a back specialist, and he will miss his next scheduled start in Philly on Sunday.
NOT GOOD NEWS!!!! No matter how you slice it...NOT GOOD NEWS!!!!
The article mentions the possible candidates to start for CY as Ledezma and Stauffer....yikes!!
THE Shout Out!!!
I got a couple phone calls when Matty mentioned the wifey & I on the air, but I didn't know if they had given my entire shout out.... to our family, friends, and all the Gaslamp Ballers.
So... just know that I was representing in STL for all of you! If you saw the Channel 4 broadcast, I guess they had a closeup of us at the very beginning. The Mrs was wearing her brown dress, and I was wearing a 1984 bright yellow Tony Gwynn BP Jersey.
Long story short:
Update [2007-8-10 11:56:19 by jbox]:
[Update by jpleeg2]:
Thanks for getting this Youtube shot and audio up for us while we're still out of town. We DVR'd the game back home just in case we made it on air, or our shout out made it. Pretty funny that one of my buddies called me today and asked how "Joshangie" is doing.
Also, I don't know where they got the piece about us "taking our time heading back from Cooperstown". Oh well. I guess it's the "hotter than *!$#" weather in St Louis that affected Matty's reading skills.
Can't recall who it was who asked how we made it happen. Here's the link to that diary, which includes the email address.

A lil help if anyone knows....
I posted this in yesterday's game thread, and didn't get any replies, but I'm hoping it was just lost in the mix and someone can help me out.
Does anyone know how to get info to Channel 4 to say "hi back to the fans in SD"?
Reason I ask is because the Mrs and I are in Indiana for a wedding, and I talked my way into a 1 day trip to St Louis for Thursday's game.
Her dad has some great connections in St Louis, so we are going to be sitting 5 rows behind the Padres dugout. I'll be in the 1984 bright yellow Gwynn batting practice jersey.
Any help is greatly appreciated....GO PADS!!
Wells....7 Games???
Are you effin kidding me!!!
If his side of the story is accurate, and the video seems to support it, all he was doing was asking the f'n HP umpire a question. Then the dude tells Boomer he doesn't want to hear anymore, and when he calls for Bard to come out, he says "Hey, I was just trying to ask a question", he gets run.
Now, at that point, I don't blame Boomer ONE BIT for going crazy like he did.
Anyways, 7 games is total and utter bullshit!
No Ichiro in SD
Watching Sportscenter.....
The show led off with "Breaking News" that Ichiro is on the verge of signing a 5 year extension with the M's that could be worth somewhere in the neighborhood of $100 Million, and that the deal could be announced on Friday.
No more pipe dreams of Ichiro Madness at Petco!!!
CY IS AN ALL STAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It's official!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
WOOHOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Gaslamp Ball Did It!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
VOTE FOR CY!!!!
Update [2007-7-2 9:13:51 by Dex]: Bumped from the diaries if you're feeling like an activist today. I don't know what's going around the GLB Offices, but jbox and I have a really blase attitude towards this today. We'll do our best to get things going.
http://www.mlb.com/mlb/events/all_star/y2007/fv/ballot.html
Stats for the candidates:
Chris Young 8-3, 2.14 ERA
Carlos Zambrano 9-6, 4.20 ERA
Roy Oswalt 7-5, 3.42 ERA
Tom Gorzelanny 8-4, 3.05 ERA
Brandon Webb 8-5, 3.05 ERA
CY is friggin 3rd in the NL in ERA. It's disgusting that he has to be on this final vote ballot to begin with.
We gotta make it happen!
I FOUND AN EASIER WAY TO VOTE FOR CY IF AND ONLY IF YOU HAVE AN UNLIMITED TEXT MESSAGING PACKAGE TO ALL CARRIERS:
SEND A TEXT MESSAGE THAT JUST SAYS N4 TO 36197
THEN YOU CAN JUST HIT RESEND OVER AND OVER AGAIN
IF YOU DON'T HAVE AN UNLIMITED TEXT PLAN FOR ALLLLLLL MESSAGES, PLEASE DON'T USE THIS WAY!!!
Suspensions from Saturday
[editor's note, by jbox] Gaslamp Baller jpleeg2 gives his opinion on the suspensions. Join in the conversation in the comments section. I'm not too broken up about the suspension or the fines. I still had no idea that Brian Giles was on the field, but maybe he's the reason why Zambrano was trying to put his pants back on. It's all becoming so clear. I'm just glad they suspended that rat bastard Perry.
Derek Lee - 5 games
CY - 5 games (for defending himself...WTF??)
Gerald Perry - 3 games
Jake and Brian Giles were also fined undisclosed amounts.
My thoughts:
(1) Lee should've received 8-10 games. He's the puss that instigated the whole thing.
(2) CY was DEFENDING HIMSELF. What, in Bob Watson's eyes, was he supposed to do there? Just keep his hands at his sides and take the punches?? Unreal!!
(3) How does Jake get fined for trying to keep the peace? If that's the case, then shouldn't Marcus have been fined for pushing CY outta the way and then trying to fend any of the bitch ass cubbies who wanted to take a shot at him??
(4) Didn't see Zambrano's name anywhere in the official press release? I don't see how his actions could be construed as anything but aggressive, seeing as how he had to be held back by 2 coaches/players.
Bob Watson has ABSOLUTELY NO CLUE what he's doing as MLB's "disciplinarian".
Red Sox Series Pitching Matchups
Sooooo boring.. an off day.... so I looked at the Padres and Red Sox pitching rotations to see what we'll be watching this weekend if the rotations stay on track.
It's going to be friggin awesome to watch!!
Friday: DiceK vs CY
Saturday: Wakefield vs Maddux
Sunday: Schilling vs Peavy
Not bummed that we are missing Beckett!!
Showing 1 - 28 of 28
