He's been almost as bad as Balfour just has a high strand-rate.
Commented on The Rays Tank: An adequate amount of hope on Aug 25 2014, 9:11p
Because then he'd be out obviously.

Agreed. It was Gomes who actually caused it to turn into a brawl by assaulting Escobar.
Commented on Athletics claim Yunel Escobar off revocable trade waivers from Rays on Aug 25 2014, 9:21a
They don't want to give up anything the Rays want, maybe?
Commented on What happens if the Rays trade Yunel Escobar? on Aug 24 2014, 10:28p
I know small sample but nice numbers for that guy we got in the Willy Adames trade.
Commented on The Rays Tank: Three more at home, then on the road again on Aug 19 2014, 3:30p
It's definitely a repeatable skill but also comes at a pretty big risk.

He better not visit Hatfield.

Commented on GDT: The one that got away, Part III on Aug 6 2014, 4:01p
Yes you have to discount future wins. How much depends on the current state of the team.
Commented on It wasn't supposed to end like this on Aug 6 2014, 10:24a
if it werent for the injury I dont think he gets moved because they could really use him at 2b.
Commented on It wasn't supposed to end like this on Aug 5 2014, 9:26p - 1 reply
Yes its probable that Russell is the most valuable piece between both deals but its really hard to be a consistent 4-5 WAR player in order to beat Smyly + Franklin.
Commented on It wasn't supposed to end like this on Aug 5 2014, 9:22p - 1 reply
Not saying you do. There are more variables than just a 4 vs 2-2s.
Commented on It wasn't supposed to end like this on Aug 5 2014, 9:20p
But that roster spot will be costing you 15MM+ next year.

i wouldnt be surprised if the Rays dont get more wins than the Cubs will from this deal.

it was the Cleveland/Cincy game.

Commented on Rays Tank: We're still waiting on Aug 4 2014, 6:43p
Their outfield was awful and they are really left-hand hitting heavy.
Commented on Rays Tank: We're still waiting on Aug 4 2014, 2:58p - 1 reply
Exactly a MI who can hit RHP has real value since everybody playing those positions are RH.
Commented on Rays Tank: We're still waiting on Aug 4 2014, 2:54p
I don't think they necessarily did but think it's really borderline.
Commented on Rays Tank: We're still waiting on Aug 4 2014, 2:52p
Me either was just running with the premise that was earlier in the conversation.
Commented on Rays Tank: We're still waiting on Aug 4 2014, 2:49p - 1 reply
I think in a vacuum the Mariners overpaid for Jackson.
Commented on Rays Tank: We're still waiting on Aug 4 2014, 2:46p - 1 reply
Nowhere did I say he was awful. I said he was more probably in the 2.5-3 WAR/yr range.
Commented on Rays Tank: We're still waiting on Aug 4 2014, 2:41p - 1 reply
No but they traded the future wins for the biggest difference in wins today.
Commented on Rays Tank: We're still waiting on Aug 4 2014, 2:39p - 1 reply
There he is being bought as a 1-2 WAR player, so if he does become a 3 WAR player it's an obvious win for the Rays in regards to that portion of the trade.
Commented on Rays Tank: We're still waiting on Aug 4 2014, 2:34p
Also they were pretty much backed into a corner of needing specifically an OF that preferrably plays CF.
Commented on Rays Tank: We're still waiting on Aug 4 2014, 2:33p
Exactly. There was more leverage in working with the Mariners than against the Rays with Price.
Commented on Rays Tank: We're still waiting on Aug 4 2014, 2:29p - 1 reply
It doesn't.
Commented on Rays Tank: We're still waiting on Aug 4 2014, 2:28p
A 0.5 a win over a year in order to get 4 additional years of wins is a bit much.
Commented on Rays Tank: We're still waiting on Aug 4 2014, 2:26p
Or had no way of extracting the value of what they traded because they badly managed their assets in regards to their roster in the offseason.
Commented on Rays Tank: We're still waiting on Aug 4 2014, 2:24p - 1 reply
They traded more wins by buying a shiny new toy that plays in the position of a slightly used toy.
Commented on Rays Tank: We're still waiting on Aug 4 2014, 2:23p - 1 reply
Calling him a 3.5-WAR player is pretty generous at this point.
Commented on Rays Tank: We're still waiting on Aug 4 2014, 2:18p - 2 replies
Trading Jose Molina for Franklin would be called theft.
Commented on Rays Tank: We're still waiting on Aug 4 2014, 2:13p
I don't think we bought him at a 3 win rate.
Commented on Rays Tank: We're still waiting on Aug 4 2014, 2:09p - 1 reply
1.2 years of Austin Jackson who hasn't lived up to his 1 breakout offensive year.
Commented on Rays Tank: We're still waiting on Aug 4 2014, 1:56p - 1 reply
If your projections have him as a higher value then his current perceived value even paying a market to acquire him as long as his performance is better than what you actually paid it's still buying low.
Commented on Rays Tank: We're still waiting on Aug 4 2014, 1:26p - 1 reply
Unless you're the Marlins and win it all whenever you make the playoffs even if you've never won your division.
Commented on Rays Tank: We're still waiting on Aug 4 2014, 1:25p
Yes, but when there is an unique asset it makes sense to overpay "market rate" if you feel that it's real value is then you overpay to make the deal.
Commented on Rays Tank: We're still waiting on Aug 4 2014, 1:22p - 1 reply
It really depends what the FO project out of Franklin.
Commented on Rays Tank: We're still waiting on Aug 4 2014, 1:06p - 1 reply
Ya I'm leaning toward completely disregarding Franklin's 2014 stats for any meaningful purpose going forward.
Commented on Rays Tank: We're still waiting on Aug 4 2014, 12:44p
Nick Franklin's rookie year wasn't that bad.
Commented on Rays Tank: We're still waiting on Aug 4 2014, 12:30p - 1 reply
I think it more has to do with the current economic state.

Ya it really all depends. Did the last year's drop off or was he promoted.
Commented on The David Price trade: Reactions from the media on Aug 2 2014, 2:12p
Smyly is reasonable outcome for most of the big arms that were perceived to be potentially available.

Not knowing specifics just that they were top-50s.
Commented on The David Price trade: Reactions from the media on Aug 2 2014, 1:27p - 1 reply
I think it's more just a shock of not the return expected, but the value will probably be there in the end.

I think that would have been a valid plan, but would require them to go all out on 2016-17.
Commented on The David Price trade: Reactions from the media on Aug 2 2014, 10:47a
Exactly. We gave up most of the Superstar potential, but got players ready today and could still be above average regulars for 5+ years.
Commented on Did the Rays lose the David Price trade? on Aug 2 2014, 12:37a - 1 reply
Putting up a 105 wRC+ for the season.
Commented on Angels 5, Rays 3: Nick Franklin doesn't reach base, Drew Smyly records no outs on Aug 2 2014, 12:35a - 1 reply
As a player Cespedes and Smyly are fairly equivalent in the 2.5-3 WAR range going forward.
Commented on Did the Rays lose the David Price trade? on Aug 1 2014, 5:39p
The "scrap-heap" takes dollars and is very high variance.
Commented on Did the Rays lose the David Price trade? on Aug 1 2014, 5:38p
Except not a right-handed hitter and can play CF.
Commented on Did the Rays lose the David Price trade? on Aug 1 2014, 3:23p - 1 reply
The difference between Bedard and Smyly could well about the same difference between Smyly and Price.
Commented on Did the Rays lose the David Price trade? on Aug 1 2014, 3:21p - 1 reply
Logically does if people think Smyly is a 2.5-3 WAR do you think you can get 4 years of that at much more affordable rates for David Price.
Commented on Did the Rays lose the David Price trade? on Aug 1 2014, 2:47p
Just look at the history of trades for Ace pitchers for prospects.
Commented on Did the Rays lose the David Price trade? on Aug 1 2014, 2:35p - 1 reply
I think the As came out ahead as far as going for it to win a championship.
Commented on Did the Rays lose the David Price trade? on Aug 1 2014, 2:31p - 1 reply
If anything he did what many people would want and gave up potential wins in 2016+ in order to win games in 2014-15.
Commented on The David Price trade: Reactions from the media on Aug 1 2014, 1:32p
Either that or they value prospects so much they don't consider the value of pieces that can help the Rays try to stay in the race right now.
Commented on The David Price trade: Reactions from the front office on Aug 1 2014, 1:23p
How many teams could realistically look to afford to extend him? It's probably going to be something along the lines of 7/$200MM if he pitches like he has been.
Commented on The David Price trade: Reactions from the front office on Aug 1 2014, 1:20p
And if you're making the trade in the offseason even for good prospects realistically you're looking at June 2016 before they'll be called up to help the ML team.
Commented on The David Price trade: Reactions from the front office on Aug 1 2014, 1:17p - 1 reply
Being unaffordable to the Rays in 2017 in his Arb 3 is fine.
Commented on The David Price trade: Reactions from the front office on Aug 1 2014, 1:15p
If like many project him to be a 3 WAR pitcher going forward the Rays could maybe afford one, but that would be most of the free agent budget at like $12-15M/yr minimum.
Commented on The David Price trade: Reactions from the front office on Aug 1 2014, 1:09p
What deal of trading for prospects ever really set up for a future title.
Commented on The David Price trade: Reactions from the media on Aug 1 2014, 12:59p
You can't just expect somebody to potentially run the team at a loss.
Commented on The despair of trading David Price in a pennant race on Aug 1 2014, 12:31p
I'm feeling the same way.
Commented on The despair of trading David Price in a pennant race on Aug 1 2014, 1:19a
Definitely not too much in a vacuum, but just don't see how it really makes sense for the Tigers with their current roster.
Commented on Who is Willy Adames? on Jul 31 2014, 10:05p
I don't see how it makes the Tiger's that much better.
Commented on Who is Willy Adames? on Jul 31 2014, 9:56p - 1 reply
I'd rather have this package than that.
