Five For Howling Registration for Guest Recaps

Update (10/25):  We are reposting Justin's fanpost and have reopened the comments section because we want to make sure all of our readers get to join in the fun.

This idea is borrowed from other SBN sites (well, specifically AZSnakepit, since I go there). Basically what a guest recap is is... well, a non staff member gets to recap the game! Sounds fun :P (so Travis, Carl, etc can't get a guest spot). I was thinking about doing one a month. Here is the NHL's schedule for the upcoming season (note, certain games I deleted because I think the staff should recap those):

Trouble with the round table

My SBN account was evidently registered to an old email adress that I no longer use or check. I had been checking my gmail account all day Sunday. I have changed the email in my profile to the correct one. That said... the email went out at 5:30 last night, and the round table was due at 9am this morning. I worked from 5-12 last night, went home and went to bed. I wish the email had gotten sent out earlier because I might have thought to check the yahoo account eventually. Like I said, I had been checking my email all day. Sorry.

AZ Snake Pit Diamondbacks 4, Mets 8: Mets sweep away the Diamondbacks' Easter eggs.

Our starting pitcher today, Armando Galarraga has a spectacular 3-0 record thus far. He has been quite the bargain. Just kidding, his era is 6.00 and has gotten 24 runs of support in three fames. This is a good example of why W/L is a bad stat pitching stat. It looks like Galarraga has only faced the Mets once, which shoudn't be a surprise to anyone. He has given up 4BBs in 18PAs. Uh oh.

The Mets will counter with Jon Niese, who is currently 3-0. Kelly Johnson is 4-7 off him and Upton is 4-6. Chris Young has a homer. The last time we faced Niese, we knocked him out in the 5th inning of a 14-1 win back on August 1, 2010.

No that I think of it, not sure why I am writing in stats as if this were a preview, rather than a recap. Oh well.

Will results be close to the August 1st game? Heck, will we even get this one in? First pitch in 25 minutes. Details after the jump.

Also this has been confirmed by a separate link on Lone Star Ball. Another poster and I kind of led the charge about Webb faking it, and we take back our comments on that front.

AZ Snake Pit [Sort of OT] Baseball Catalog

First off, I have no idea if Jim might have an objection to this, but Five For Howling posted a hockey questionnaire so I thought it would be fun to amend it for baseball...

The Tucson Padres have unveiled their logo (which I like). Their first home game at Tucson Electric Park will be on April 15 vs Salt Lake City. Their first series against Reno doesnt come until June 13-16 at Reno. The first time Reno will visit Tucson is July 4-6 (which I wonder if that is intentional).
I am going to try and go to every Reno game, or most anyway.

Terry Kennedy will manage the team, with Bob Skube as hitting coach and Steve Webber pitching coach.

I know this is a baseball forum, but I thought this was worthy news. Pretty sad. This incident happened two lights down from me and a friend of mine was either there when it happened or shortly after. RIP. I voted for Giffords each of her terms, she was 40.

AZ Snake Pit The Greatest 21 Days

Here are a couple of links to a site that I have found with very interesting information. It takes a look at the 1990 CMC minor league baseball card set and what happened to each player. This is a look at the 880 minor leaguers  in the set. The title takes its name from a line from the move, Bull Durham.

http://greatest21days.blogspot.com/

On the left of the page there are links to different clubs. A list of Toros players that they have are:

Mike Simms (whom I remember seeing play),

Tuffy Rhodes (shares single season record for the most HRs in a season in Japan; most HRs career by a foreigner),

Darryle Kile (one of my favorite non DBacks) and

Doug Strange, Harry Spillman, Brian Meyer, Ryan Hennis, Pedro Sanchez.

The Toros

They also have a link to the Phoenix Firebirds, who would eventually come and be the Sidewinders and Aces.

Tucson, AZ - Triple-A baseball is returning to Tucson after a two year hiatus with the help of the Pima County Sports & Tourism Authority and the San Diego Padres. It was announced Thursday that the San Diego Padres Triple-A team will call the Old Pueblo home for at least one year while they await the decision from the Escondido City Council on the construction of a new stadium.

PHOENIX -- Kevin Towers spent the month of October reshaping the D-backs' front office and coaching staff.

Now, the new D-backs GM will turn his attention to remaking a roster that has finished last in the National League West two years running.

Given the results the past two years, it seems like a project that could take some time. But Towers likes the talent he sees.

The D-backs have agreed to terms with Don Baylor to become the team's hitting coach, an industry source confirmed Monday. An announcement could come later this week.

Baylor, 61, had served as hitting coach for the Rockies in 2009 and 2010 before being dismissed nearly 10 days ago.

AZ Snake Pit SnakeBytes, 9/4: Vintage Edition

Today is our first day of practice for our Vintage League squad. Good luck to them. [Note from snakecharmer: With folks at vintage baseball practice on Saturdays, Jim at work and me starting my soccer practice next Saturday, we may need someone to take over Saturday's Bytes regularly...]

Recaps:

[AZCentral] Ojeda brings winning run home against Astros Ojeda's sac fly scores Roberts, Dbacks win. Wow, I made it seem like we walked off.

[Yahoo/AP] Ojeda's sac fly lifts Dbacks over Astros "It's the hardest thing in baseball when you sit around waiting for your name to be called upon," Ojeda said. “You've got to be ready to pinch hit, pinch bunt, defense, whatever. Whenever you sit on the bench for two to three hours then go into the game, it's real difficult. It looks easy, but it's not."

[CrawfishBoxes] The Crawfish Boxes recap

[TucsonToros] Toros win their GBL Best 14th straight game 12-4. To bad I can't afford to go to any games.

Minor League Baseball: Investing In The Future
By thunderbaseball
Baseball players know what you think of them.

They’re overpaid. They’re spoiled. Everything’s been handed to them.

If you’ve lived the life, however, you already know perception does not match reality. At least not in the minor leagues. Not even close.

AZ Snake Pit Dbacks rank 18th in Harris Poll of favorite baseball teams

Over on DBBP, a poster found this poll and shared it. The Harris Poll was a survey of 2,227 adults surveyed online between June 14 and 21, 2010.  This poll has been run in years past as well. The highest score the diamondbacks have gotten is 14th, in 2006. The year surprises me as that was towards the end of the rebuilding process.

In 2010, the Yankees are #1, followed by the Red Sox and Braves. You can clearly see the results of the Phillies bandwagon as they were 18th most popular in 2007 and 4th this year.

This link has a few interesting numbers, including demographics. Some of the numbers are surprising, like the Cardinals being in the middle of the pack every year.

Here is the order of placement for this year:

New York Yankees
Boston Red Sox
Atlanta Braves
Philadelphia Phillies
Chicago Cubs
New York Mets
San Francisco Giants
Los Angeles Dodgers
Minnesota Twins
St. Louis Cardinals
Milwaukee Brewers
Texas Rangers
Detroit Tigers
Seattle Mariners
Chicago White Sox
Cincinnati Reds
Cleveland Indians
Arizona Diamondbacks
Kansas City Royals
Baltimore Orioles
Colorado Rockies
Tampa Bay Rays
San Diego Padres
Oakland Athletics
Pittsburgh Pirates
Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim
Washington Nationals
Houston Astros
Florida Marlins
Toronto Blue Jays*

This poll was run for American's only, hence why Toronto comes in last in every year.

AZ Snake Pit Diamondbacks 1, Dodgers 3: In which we celebrate our Independence

Today is both our Nation's birthday and All-Star selection day. For analysis on the selection of Chris Young as our representative, go to soco and jdub's combined effort here.

I want to say thank you to all the men and women in the military for protecting our Freedoms. I would like to thank my best friend's BF for serving his country as well, in Iraq.

Today's pitching matchup was Dan Haren against Chad Billingsley. Just for fun, here are Chris Young's stats off Billingsley: (not including today's game) 38 PA, 3 HR, 6 RBI, and a .303 BA with a .368 OBP. I would say that is All-Star numbers.

More about the game itself after the jump.

AZ Snake Pit Torosfest

Just a reminder, the first Torosfest is this upcoming Saturday, against Maui. Game time is 7pm. So far we have me, Katie, Phil, and maybe Emily. I am not sure about Zephon, as he did not respond in the other thread. Oh and maybe THE SHADOW from DBBP (he has a family emergency, but he will let me know).

Anyone from Phx interested in coming?

I don't know how to bump that thread up so I am doing it this way.

AZ Snake Pit Torosfest 2010

I am creating a post to discuss the interest in this and to try and set a date for the game. Jim, Jenny etc if there is already a thread in the works I apologize so go ahead and delete this one, thanks.

There has been talk about trying to see Eri Yushida when Chico comes down here. She has only pitched 3 innings for Chico and that was in her lone start on May 28 or 29. There are two remaining Chico series, June 18-20 and July 6-9. The June series is a weekend, but that seems like to little notice. Other weekend series (Im assuming that would be best for people) are:

June 25-27 vs Maui (expansion team). They have Jerry Spradlin, but no other names that I recognize.

July 23-25 vs St George. No names that jump out at me.

July 29-31 (Thu-Sat)  vs Maui.

August 19-21 (Thu-Sat-) vs Tijuana. Their site is in Spanish so I have no idea what anything means.

August 26-28 (Thu-Sat) vs Edmonton. They have Larry Bigbie

September 3, 4 (Fri,Sat) vs Yuma in the last two games of the season. Their site gives a blank page where the roster should be. They do have Dave Cash and Bill Pulsipher on their coaching staff, a couple of names I recognize.

Tickets are $6 per person for general admission. There isn't anything listed for promotionals for July, but I assume they haven't updated it yet. I know this month they have $1 hotdogs on Sundays and Saturdays are free give aways.
