Spring Training trip next week
I'm going to AZ next week for vacation and am going to be spending a day in Mesa at the Cubs Spring Training. As I've never been before, I'm looking for some general advice on where to sit, how to buy tickets, avoiding traffic (I remember hearing that getting out of the parking lots is mess) and anything else that you can think of. So...
1. Lawn "seats" are still around, right? I know it's personal preference, but is that recommended vs grandstand seating?
2. Should I buy tickets online or is there a box office where most people buy day of to save on the fees and what not?
3. Any general tips to maximize my ST experience? Good ball park food to try? Or can you bring your own food like at Wrigley?
I'd really appreciate any tips or suggestions that anyone can provide. I'm really excited about going... I wish I could spend all week at Spring Training, but one day will suffice for now, then it's off to Sedona. Thanks in advance!
Anyone been to Target Field?
Twins tickets go on sale this Saturday, and I'm planning on making a trip up there in June to catch one of the games against the Cubs. I'm looking for advice/suggestions on where to sit in Target Field. Obviously closer is better, but I don't know that an out of towner coming to Wrigley would even consider that the 400 level might be a better option than row 15 in the 200 level, for example. So... does anyone who has been to Target Field have any suggestions?
Also, hotel recommendations would be appreciated. Thanks!
Steve Rosenbloom should be fired over this
I'm seriously stunned that this made the papers. Quotes like the two below are absolutely embarrassing, particularly the first one. I don't know much about Steve Rosenbloom, because I typically don't waste time and brain cells reading the Trib's sports section, but is this common for him? What a joke.
Now get a load of this: Zambrano plans to fly to Guatemala over the All-Star break to prepare for the adoption of his son. Can you say "utter disrespect,’’ boys and girls?
Zambrano threw a bullpen session at Wrigley Field on Wednesday while the Cubs were looking stupid in a third straight one-run loss in Washington on a suicide squeeze that just pantsed everybody from the manager on down. More of that later. For now, the story is that Zambrano threw a bullpen at Wrigley instead of in Washington because the Cubs didn’t want the big goof to further hurt or strain his back sitting on an airplane. This spasm of lucidity could impact the Cubs’ chances reaching first place in the Frickin' Idiot League.
Zambrano: "We stink"
Carlos Zambrano criticized Carlos Marmol and his teammates after Sunday’s 3-2, 10-inning loss to the Cardinals, which was the Cubs’ sixth straight defeat. Big Z was asked if he was surprised that Albert Pujols came through with the game-winning hit again.
"The problem wasn’t Pujols," Zambrano said. " The problem was the previous at-bat. We should know better than this. We played like a Triple-A team. This is embarrassing, embarrassing for the team, for the owners, for the fans. Embarrassing. That’s the word for this team. We should know better than this, we should know better than we did on the field. We should know that Ryan Theriot is not a good fastball hitter. We should know that as a team. We should play better here. We stink. That’s all I’ve got to say."
In case you weren’t watching, Theriot hit a game-tying RBI double in the ninth off Marmol, hitting a slider. Marmol apparently shook off catcher Koyie Hill, who wanted him to throw a fastball.

Randy Wells: Sorry for partying
Okay, not an exact quote but it sums up the article pretty well. Good to see that he's got his inner Farnsworth out of his system and is ready to focus on doing what he gets paid to do.
Guzman shut down
This can't be good.
Sign. Kiko. Calero. Seriously.
Canseco: A Current HOF-er Used Roids
Figured this was worth passing along...
"And I'll tell you this, Major League Baseball is going to have a big, big problem on their hands when they find out they have a Hall of Famer who's used."
The first person to come to mind is the most recent inductee... Rickey. I can't think of any other HOF-ers that he played with off the top of my head, although I'm sure there are at least a couple.
MLB Players collective opinion on "whether it should count"
This week's SI Players MLB Poll asked the question "Should home field advantage in the World Series be decided by which league wins the All Star Game or by which team has the better regular season record?" The results...
83% of players polled said regular-season record
16% said the All Star Game
1% said neither/don't know
Most fans think the "This time is counts!!!" thing is dumb and the players generally agree. For the record, this was based on a survey of 380 current MLB players. As an aside, I can't help but wonder if Kyle Farnsworth was one of the few that made up the 1% that couldn't come up with an answer.
Thoughts?
Ozzie Guillen continues to stay classy...
"Because our fans are not stupid like Cubs fans," Guillen said. "They know we're [expletive]."
What a complete embarrassment to the game.
Who's writing the scouting reports for SBNation?
Because they need to better educate themselves.
On Lilly: Career Potential -- Decent mid-rotation lefty.
On Theriot: Career Potential -- Steady utility man.
On Ryan Ludwick: Career Potential -- A platoon or fourth outfielder.
I'm sure there are others. Is someone getting paid to write these? If so they're not very good at their job! Al how do I inquire about replacing this person? Just kidding. Well, kinda. It would be a fun job!
Bradley: Umpires retaliating
Overall, I like MB's attitude and the way he approaches the game. But this is dumb. Focus on the game, Milton. The umps aren't the reason you've been awful this year.
Ramirez leaves with a dislocated left shoulder
Nasty looking play. I'm guessing best case scenario is that he's out for around two months, with worst case being he never fully recovers.
Obviously Jim needs to do something. To me, Aramis is our best, and most important, player. Ryan Freel is a nice little bench player but Jim needs to do something. What sort of realistic options are there?
It sure would be nice if we still had DeRosa. That trade is looking worse and worse as the season progresses.
Why aren't Cubs fans talking about Derek Lowe?
In terms of starting pitchers, the only real names that have been discussed thus far have been Dempster, Peavy, and to a certain extent Randy Johnson. But I want to bring another name to the discussion -- Derek Lowe. I don't know what his preferences are, so this may be moot, but I think it's at least worth talking about.
During his last four years in LA, he has been a consistently good pitcher, and has stayed healthy too (no fewer than 32 starts since becoming a starter in '02). He's coming off his best season in years (3.24 ERA, 1.133 WHIP) and had three solid years prior to '08 (ERA never above 3.88, WHIP never above 1.269). He doesn't walk many people either, so that should make Lou like him in and of itself.
The only negative against Lowe that I can see is that he's on the older side (he'll turn 36 in June), but since he became a starter in 2002, he's remained healthy that whole time. And his numbers have been very consistent the last four years, so I'm not sure if the age should be too big of a concern. I figure he'll get Dempster money, but for fewer years due to his age. Am I missing something here? Why not Derek Lowe?
7 Cubs named to the All Star game!
7 Cubs named to the All Star game!
Soriano, Soto and Fukudome as starters.
Ramirez, Wood, Zambrano, and Dempster all get the nod as well.
A total of 8 will be there if you count Piniella!

Hotel Advice
I'm going to be flying into Chicago for a game and need some advice. I plan on landing in Chicago around 9 or so on the morning of the game I'll be attending, which gives me roughly three hours to get from the airport to the hotel to Wrigley (I'd like to arrive to Wrigley about an hour before gametime). Now here's where I need help. I'm not too picky about the hotel. All I ask is that it's somewhat cheap (~150) and has a bar/restaurant in it. I don't care if it's near O'Hare, or if it's in the city. As long as it fits those two criteria, well, and isn't a dump, as well as fits into the time requirements (has to be near an El stop), I'm fine with it.
With all that said, there are about 5 billion hotels in Chicago and while looking for a good one I quickly become overwhelmed. Can anyone help me out and recommend a hotel or three? Again, I'm open to something near O'Hare, something near Wrigley, or even something that will have me flying into Midway and then hopping the El towards somewhere decent. Thanks in advance!
Hotel advice?
I'm going to be traveling to Chicago in April for a couple Cubs games (against the Cardinals). I'm looking for advice on hotels. The most important things to me are 1) that they're cheap (but not poor quality) and 2) within walking distance of a train stop. I'm looking to spend around 100 bucks per night maximum.
Any suggestions?
