We fans know nothing!
I think it is important for us to keep this in mind as we blather on on sites like these. I was clicking around and found this fan post from right before the draft.
http://www.stampedeblue.com/2009/4/23/850209/the-colts-do-not-need-a-dt
It had a lot of really intense back and forth in it, basically on 2 sides. The author believed that the colts had 2 DTs on the roster (Johnson and Muir) who were being overlooked and would be good enough. The other side had some people claiming that the Colts MUST draft a DT in the first round.
My favorite quote was "Like you said, the Colts may not draft a DT at 27, but I won’t be suprised if they draft two between rounds 2-5." Nice work on that call ColtsFanMChiTown.
The funny thing about all of this is that everyone was wrong (or right, I guess). They drafted 2 DTs and got a third FA, but now into the season, none of those have made an impact and Johnson and Muir are good enough.
The Colts and a DT
So I've definitly convinced myself that the Colts will not make a run
at a high end DT either in the draft or in free agency. Take a look at the
recent 1st round draft picks and tell me if any of them would have
really made a difference?
1st round draft picks
2008 - Dorsey, Ellis, Balmer
2007 - Okoye, Carriker, Harrell
2006 - Ngata, Bunkley, McCargo
The only one I would say would be a major improvement over what we
have is Ngata. There are a couple of decent players in there (McCargo
and Harrell) and a couple of maybe's (Ellis and Okoye). But Balmer,
Bunkley and maybe Dorsey are all busts. Carriker is a DE/DT so not
really what we are looking for.
When you look at big time DT's it's even worse. Below are the Pro
bowlers the last couple of years and their salaries. Those salaries
are the average per year over the life of the contract, so to actually
get one for next year would cost significantly more than this number.
Pro Bowlers (and Salaries)
2009 - K Williams (7 mpy), P Williams (7 mpy), J Ratliff (4 mpy),
Haynesworth (7 mpy*), Jenkins (7 mpy), Rogers (4 mpy)
2008 - K Williams, P Williams, T. Harris (10 mpy), D. Dockett (6 mpy),
Haynesworth, Wilfork (3 mpy), Casey Hampton (6 mpy)
MPY = Million per year
* This is Haynesworth last contract, he will be a free agent this year
and wants highest paid defensive player in the league money.
This is just too much to pay for an unknown. Look at Tommie Harris,
that dude has been a liability this year and he is fat paid.
Combine this with the bad experience they had with Corey Simon and it
will never happen that we get a big name DT.
