Oakland owner: Make 1st round of playoffs 1 game

For all of you who think a 3 out of 5 is too short (and I am one of them), I am sure this idea will make your head explode.

Linky

Lew Wolff has a way to shorten baseball’s postseason: Make the first round best-of-one.

"I’d make it one-game-and-you’re-out for the first series," the Oakland Athletics owner said Wednesday. "It would be exciting. It would be great."

"I’ve always thought a one-game wild card (playoff) would be a pretty good idea," said Bob DuPuy, MLB’s chief operating officer. "Lew is an imaginative fellow and has a lot of good ideas."

The playoffs are a crapshoot as it is, to make the 1st round only 1 game is unthinkable in my mind.

Cranes says Zell Still Pushing for sale by end of Dec.

According to Cranes, the Cubs WILL have a new prospective owner by the end of December. It looks like Zell really needs the money from the sale ASAP and even though it won't be completed in time to make a debt payment, if there is a seller set, the banks should look favorably on Zell.

http://www.chicagobusiness.com/cgi-bin/news.pl?id=31840

Tribune Co. CEO Sam Zell is pushing to have a deal in place by yearend to sell all but a small stake in the Chicago Cubs, despite recent indications that he might retain 50% of the ballclub. Mr. Zell expects to select a finalist from the five remaining bidding groups and submit the deal for Major League Baseball's approval sometime in December, a person familiar with the sale says. He is fast-tracking the sale — despite a credit crunch that seemed to put his year-end deadline in doubt — as pressure mounts to raise as much as $1 billion to chip away at the mountain of debt from his 2007 buyout of Tribune.

The Chicago Cubs announced Wednesday that manager Lou Piniella's coaching staff will return for the 2009 season.

So much for grooming Ryne Sandberg or Jody Davis on the major league level to be Lou's successor. I guess that might also be why Pat Listach took the Nationals position
Kasey

I heard this mentioned on the WGN news last night and I have not seen it posted here (and if it was and I missed it, I figured a new post would help people find this easier). WGN will rebroadcast the Zambrano no-hitter on Friday at 10 PM. They said it will be on both WGN locally and the Superstation. With this advance notice, everyone will now have a chance to set their DVR's to capture this game for posterity.

Cubs Biggest Nightmare?

Phil Rogers has an interesting column today. Here is the link
http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/cs-080827-phil-rogers-chicago-cubs-white-sox,0,4183191.column.

In it, I think he talks about what some of us have been secretly dreading...What happens if the Cubs and Sox play in the series. Personally, the 2 annual series are always pretty hard on me. I dread every game they play together and hope upon hope that the Cubs come out on top. With all the back and forth between fans of either team...to play the Sox and if 1906 repeats itself and the favored Cubs lose to the Sox, it would be worse than 2005.

I don't know. Maybe it's just that little nagging voice that prevents me from even trying to calculate the magic number and was watching to see when we went over 81 wins to ensure a .500 season (and when we made 82 wins, celebrated that)that makes me a bit nervous, but this column just hit a nerve with me.

This has to be a joke...right? I don't know which is the bigger joke...the assumption that the O's would want Marquis or the assumption that the Cubs want to hang on to him.

http://www.oregonlive.com/sports/argus/ron_forbes/index.ssf?/base/columnist/121735390173350.xml&coll=6

The Chicago Cubs are still hoping to land Baltimore second baseman Brian Roberts, but they're reluctant to include righthander Jason Marquis in a deal.

HOUSTON - The blister on Kerry Wood's right index finger is likely to send him to the disabled list for the 12th time in his career.

"We're coming to the point where we're going to have to come to a conclusion about what to do," manager Lou Piniella said Sunday.

Wood hasn't pitched since July 11, so the Cubs can backdate him on the DL to July 12, meaning he can return Sunday against Florida at Wrigley Field.

That means Carlos Marmol will assume the closer's role in Arizona and for most of the four-game series against the Marlins. Marmol pitched a perfect ninth Sunday with a seven-run lead after being booed at Wrigley Field last week when he blew a five-run lead in the ninth inning.

I sure hope Marmol has turned it back around after his All Star game performance. THis does bring up the question of who is going to replace Marmol as the set-up guy?
