"It's different, because we didn't really have that last year where the quarterback was demanding of us, telling us where he wanted us and just taking charge. It's a different aspect." -- Running back Willis McGahee, on what has changed with Peyton Manning now leading the Broncos.
Why it's not bad if they let Mike McCoy 'get away'.
It is easy to feel an urgency to keep Mike McCoy: other teams want him, and he would be some continuity for Tebow. The fact is, Mike McCoy is a great candidate for OC for a team whose head coach is offense oriented and wants a lot of control over the play calling during games, which is why he was a good fit under Josh McDaniels, but would not be a good choice for OC under John Fox.
The teams that want McCoy right now are teams whose head coaches are former OC's themselves, like the Kansas City Chiefs and the Cleveland Browns. The fact is, Mike McCoy was a quarterbacks coach until Josh McDaniels brought him to Denver to be his OC, and Josh called the plays on game day. Mike McCoy's sum game calling experience was during the last four games of the 2010 season. If it were possible to keep Mike McCoy as our Quarterbacks coach, that would be ideal, but that would be a demotion, and Mike deserves his shot under the wing of an offensive minded head coach where he wouldn't be in over his head and could grow into the full responsibilities of an OC nicely.
Here is his career to date:
| 2000 2001 2002 2003–2008 2009 2010–present |
Carolina Panthers (Offensive Assistant) Carolina Panthers (Wide Receivers Coach) Carolina Panthers (Offensive Assistant) Carolina Panthers (Quarterbacks Coach) Denver Broncos (Offensive Coordinator) (Quarterbacks Coach) Denver Broncos (Offensive Coordinator) |
Retaining McCoy as the OC here in Denver with John Fox, a defensive oriented head coach, would be expecting Mike to fill the role of an experienced OC with a strong background running the offense and calling the plays so the head coach could be more hands on with the defense. That is not where Mike McCoy is in his career right now, and it would be a steep on-the-job learning curve, something the Broncos are trying to avoid at this point.

Something else Demaryius Thomas and Eric Decker have in common...
Two highest scoring WR's on the Wonderlic test
http://www.nationalfootballpost.com/Minnesotas-Decker-scores-a-43-on-the-Wonderlic.html
"Decker scored a 43 on the Wonderlic test at last month’s combine, the top score at not only the wide receiver position, but for the entire group of prospects who took the test in Indianapolis as well, according to a league source.
The other top scores among the wide receiversincluded Georgia Tech’s Demaryius Thomas (34, who coincidentally also missed the workouts due to a foot injury), Michigan State’s Blair White (31), Notre Dame’s Golden Tate (29) and Clemson’s Jacoby Ford (28).
Rounding out the bottom of the wide receiver class were Illinois’ Arrelious Benn (11), California’s Nyan Boateng (14) and West Virginia’s Alric Arnett (14).
Other notable wide receivers:
Dezmon Briscoe (Kansas): 19
Dez Bryant (Oklahoma State): 16
Mardy Gilyard (Cincinnati): 17"
Bobby Turner has been hired as running backs coach, though he will carry an assistant head coach title.
"I don't know Josh from Adam, but I think he did a brilliant job. It wasn't just the production on the field, but more the empowerment of the players to take ownership of the football team. He instilled a mind-set that they're football players, not prima donnas. To put an 8-8 season on that body of work, that's as good a coaching job as anybody did in the NFL."

Remember this? "Bailey back on the field for Broncos after failing conditioning test" I don't think we need to worry about any of the Broncos becoming complacent under McDaniels...
Denver: Playing well right now, but considering they haven’t played a great offense, it makes me wonder about the Broncos’ ability to hold up on defense. They’re well-coached, but at some point this season, Kyle Orton will have to make a play, and I don’t see that being a good thing.
The contrast between how McD handled 2 missed FG and the SeaHawks coach...
Of course, to be fair, the Broncos won anyway, but I believe Josh McDaniel wouldn't have thrown Prater under the bus even if the Broncos had lost by 6....
Zorn is squandering the biggest gift in the NFL: an easy schedule. Beatable teams like St. Louis, Detroit, Denver, Oakland, Kansas City and Tampa Bay dot the Redskins' schedule.

Huh. Nothing about Eddie not knowing the play book or having a bad attitude! Go figure! He and BMarsh are fine.
Broncos QB Kyle Orton ranks first in the NFL with a 152.1 fourth-quarter passer rating.
Kyle Orton, Denver
Analysis: Won as a young player (21-12 starting record) … strong arm … personality and work ethic endear him to teammates … has not shown a consistent ability to change trajectory and ball speed on various throws

Josh McDaniel's "approval Rating" on ESPN
Wow. ESPN's Sports Nation lets fans rate coaches "Approve" or "Disapprove", and Josh is at 40%, below a number of coaches who lost their games this week! Apparently all that negative press has had it's effect! Lovie Smith has a 30%, just two notches down from Josh....
