I don't want to be that guy

but for what it's worth, I sat right next to Dontari Poe at the Cheescake Factory last night. He was sitting with two other unbelievably large human beings. I hope he's just passing through KC and not in town for a visit with the Chiefs. At least I didn't say he was looking at houses in Loch Loyd =)

salary cap

so if the chiefs spend all of their available cap space, including the carry over from last year, how will that affect the cap in 2013? i can't remember the amount they carried over but i think it was around 30 million. so, if they spend all of it, they are kinda like being 30 million over the cap, right? i don't want them to have to cut a bunch of players next year after what looks like a solid off season this year.

As being reported by some. I've confirmed that the Chiefs are out of the Manning competition. Sources say Chiefs put forth strong effort.

Arrowhead Pride what's your definition

I read post after post declaring about 90% of the Chiefs' draft picks over the past 10 years were busts.  My question to everyone is, how do you define a bust?  Do they have to make the pro bowl every year?  Do they have to be the best at their position?  Do they have to be labeled a sure fire hall of famer after their first game?  I know there really isn't a tangible answer to this question but I'm curious to know what the good people (mostly) of Arrowhead Pride qualify as a bust.  If you list names, give reasons.

Let's say for this post's sake we're only talking about the first round.  Also how much time passes before you label someone a bust? (Thanks for helping me clarify ttownmikey)

Arrowhead Pride If you could build the perfect coach...

There are several people coming out of the woodwork after and 0-4 start that do not like the Head Coach.  It seems some people don't like the fact that he yells at players and/or cuts players who don't buy into the system or who just are not very good.  That's fine.  Everyone gets to have their opinion.  Here's my question.  If you are looking for a coach, what traits are you looking for?  I'm curious if people can say some tangible traits they would like to see in a Head Coach.  I don't want to hear things like, "a proven winner" or "successful everywhere he goes".  These things are a given and I'm really referring more to the traits that deal with players and schemes.  I'm curious to see what everyone thinks a good coach is.  Here are some of the things I want in mine...

Arrowhead Pride How'd we get in this mess?

This all started in 2001

If you take an objective look at why the Chiefs have been so bad the past few seasons, then you have to start with 2001.  That is the year we brought in Dick Vermeil.  I know most people will have a horrible reaction to that statement but keep reading and allow me to explain.

Arrowhead Pride To build a consistent winner

I read (over and over) from several members of AP nation about how the Chiefs new leadership has let everyone down because they haven’t made enough big time player acquisitions.  I would like to give my point of view.

While it may be true that the Chiefs haven’t made many player acquisitions that knock your socks off, (depending on how you feel about Matt Cassel, there may not be any) I believe Pioli and Haley have approached this offseason the correct way in order to build a long term, consistent, sustainable winner.   I will explain myself in a moment but first, I want to talk about some of the more major transactions and what it has done for the team.

Hired a young, fiery and successful coordinator as our head coach.  Like him or hate him, you have to at least admit that Haley’s fiery attitude and penchant for holding players accountable is a breath of fresh air.  I will be the first to admit he will has some growing pains to go through and doesn’t quite have all the particulars of being a head coach down but I also see an intelligent coach who seems to be learning from some of his mistakes and has been around winning his whole career and I think that bodes well for KC.  Especially in years 2 and 3 when the talent level has come up to an acceptable level he should be hitting his stride as coach.  Jury’s still out but I like the move.

Acquire Matt Cassel and Mike Vrabel for a 2nd round draft pick in the ’09 draft.  I believe this is an excellent move for a couple of reasons. 1st, you got two starters for one pick.  I’ll take that just about every time.  2nd, you got a young starting quarterback that could wind up being our starter for the next 8-10 years.  I’d say the odds are better for Cassel making it than any QB we could have taken in this year’s draft.

Drafted Tyson Jackson with the #3 overall pick.  Everyone points to our offensive line as a major weakness, which it is but so was defensive line last year.  I think it was a good move for a couple of reasons. 1st, with the switch to the 3-4, getting a prototypical defensive end for the scheme was very important.  2nd, when people say it all starts up front, that includes the defensive line too.  I would have been happy had they selected a offensive lineman here as well but I believe with our 31st ranked defense from ’08 which only had 10 sacks, it’s tough to argue that defensive line wasn’t a greater need.

Brought in several ex-Patriots.  I don’t have any problem with this.  They may not have more talent than the people they are releasing but the fact that they know the program and know what they’re supposed to do on a football field gives them the advantage.  I think anytime you’re building an organization, you go out and try to recruit from other companies that are known to do things well.  This is the way I see these moves.

Traded Tony Gonzalez for a second round draft pick in next year’s draft.  This one is tough.  On one hand, you have the greatest player ever to play that position that would have undoubtedly helped this team.  This year.  On the other hand, you were able to get a 2nd round draft pick for a guy that had publicly stated he was only going to play another year or two.  I don’t know what we’ll get for that pick so it’s hard to declare it a good move or bad move but I’m inclined to think, at the very least, we should get a solid contributor for years to come either by drafting someone with it or trading for someone with it thereby, in essence, not left holding onto nothing when Tony decided to retire.

Now for what he didn’t do.  He didn’t break the bank on any free agents, go after any sexy picks, didn’t upgrade the offensive line (even though 40% of our current line wasn’t here last year).  Some will say there was plenty of talent we could have acquired to make ourselves better.  I say, “who?”  Jason Brown was about the only free agent lineman worthy of picking up.  I say that mainly because of his age.  He could have been around long enough for us to be good and contribute.  All others either have medical issues or are old.

So to tie all this up and explain why I think this has been the correct approach so far, I’ll state what the goal is and should be.  To build a consistent, long term, sustainable winning team.  You don’t do that by going and getting all the hot free agents. (see Washington, Dallas) You bring in guys who buy into your system, believe in a team first mentality and the only thing they care about is winning.  That’s what New England did early in the decade.  It wasn’t until late in the process that they started picking up big name free agents.  And then it was only after there were enough people who had bought in that the star player almost had no choice but to conform.  This is the correct way.  It may also be the most frustrating way for fans because none of us wants to wait for the team to be good.  Some of us are tired of waiting after sitting through the Herm debacle the past 3 years.  I get that but it’s because of those years we are where we are.  In other words, Pioli didn’t make the mess but he’s the one who has to clean it up.  I for one would rather be patient and do it the right way so we don’t have to go through this again in 3 or 4 years.

did anyone hear tom jackson refer to kansas city as a tomato can? for those who don't know, a tomato can is a terrible boxer you fight to beat up on to make you feel better for your next fight. i wanna be angry and offended by this but i think, right now, he's right

Arrowhead Pride One of the reason's we're not signing big free agents

Let's face it. The best players don't want to play here right now and to be blunt, why should they?

The Chiefs have won 6 games in 2 years and while we may be excited at the prospect of our new management turning this around, most good players want to go somewhere they feel is close to winning in the playoffs.  In their minds, that ain't KC. Now, it's possible they could have offered a guy a monster contract and got them here because of the money but who wants players who only care about money and not winning? I don't.

This whole thing is a catch 22.  To win in free agency, you have to have players lining up wanting to come play for you but to get that, you have to be a perennial winner.

So, unfortunately, until we prove to the NFL that Pioli and Haley have polished this turd enough to convince people we're headed in the right direction and only a player or two away, this will be standard operating procedure in KC.  Once we make the playoffs a time or two or at least win more than half of our games, we will have to make do with the draft and 2nd and 3rd tier free agents.  The good news is that I believe our new coach will get more out of the current talent and many of the 2nd and 3rd tier free agents are better than what was on our roster last year.  I know it's frustrating because we all want to win but we will have to exercise a little patience to let this play out like it needs to.

Arrowhead Pride Someone Convince Me

In the past several weeks, I've seen what seems like an unyielding desire by posters on this site for the Chiefs to switch their defense from a 4-3 to a 3-4.  (apparently, switching to a 3-4 will automatically make our defense as good as Pittsburgh and Baltimore's just because we run the same scheme)  I've read posts about how to make such a transition possible detailing things like coaching, approach to the draft and free agency.  What I haven't seen anyone do is make a case as to WHY switching schemes is the way to go.  I personally believe that scheme is not the determining factor to being a good defense - good personnel is.  I have posted that on several of the hundreds of "do this in order to switch to a 3-4" posts but it's like spitting on a bonfire.  So I'm asking any of you supporters of switching schemes to tell me why it would be so much better for the Chiefs to do so.  I gotta tell you, I won't be easily convinced but at least maybe I can understand the thought process.

Arrowhead Pride Is it a 3-4 or a 4-3?

I thought this was an interesting read.  Turns out what most people figure to be a 3-4 really is a variation of a 4-3 defense.  I personally am a fan to running hybrid schemes in order to make best use of your talent and keeping opposing offenses off balance.  Notice what this guy says about Bellicheck, Parcells and Capers. Hopefully you all will find this article interesting as well and I can't wait to see your comments.
