Scorecasting...
Some analysis of sports trends, cliches and what not by ... "The latest salvo in the revolution comes from Jon Wertheim, a senior writer at Sports Illustrated (right), and Tobias Moskowitz, a finance professor from the University of Chicago, with their Freakonomics-influenced book Scorecasting: The Hidden Influences Behind How Sports Are Played and Games Are Won."
There is a whole chapter on the Cubs....I wonder if anyone has read this yet/any comments?
Interesting observation about the Cubs' record
Interesting observation of the 1st month of baseball....at least regarding the Cubs record. What do Atlanta, Cincinnati, Houston, New Your Mets and Washington have in common (besides taking a series from the Cubs)? What to Milwaukee and Arizona have in common....besides a losing record against the Cubs?
If you answered where the teams spring train, you would be correct.
I'm not sure the observation means anything. My thought are that it indicates a lack of preparation and studying of scouting reports by the Cubs ... or bad scouting and game planning by the Cubs Seems that they are having success against the teams that the "know" already because they saw them several times in March, and on the flipside, the teams they haven't seen, they aren't prepared to play....

Ahem...so why does the Bullpen really stink so bad?
OK....I don't think it particularly does.....BUT .... after all the love for the NL's 14th ranked offense....and a bit of encouragement from some recognized BCBers thought we'd try and figure out how to post a poll.
Is it Pinells's mismanagement? Jim's decisions about the roster? Scout's inability to evaluate pitching talent? Larry's coaching? Something else??
Personally.....an effective offense makes it all moot until October....and when you get that far.. mistakes and success in April are ancient history......
Any BCB'ers going...
To the games in Miami next week?
Why the Cubs really frustrate some of us BCB'ers...
I did a little rudimentary analysis on scoring efficiency. That is the percentage of baserunners that score.
September 4, 2007...Men vs. Boys.....
Let's see who's bellyin up (or as NOT Bruce would say...mannin up)....
Woulda, coulda, shoulda...
While enjoying (very MUCH...I'm originally from Central Illinois) this weekends sweep of the Cardinals, I thought, if the Cubs could have 10 games back, where could they be....:
I can find 10 games
Easy that would make the difference between this miserable mess and being "in contention" for a wild card spot.......(I may start a diary for...find 10 games....)...please chime in and make your own top 10 ......
1. O for San Diego.....The Cubs should have taken 2 in SD and Dempster blew his 1st save in Chicago a week later.
(3)
2. The Cubs should have swept the Braves Memorial Day weekend...not the other way around.
(3)
3. Houston, June 16...0 for 9 with RISP.
(1)
4. Florida 5/23 ...Dempster's 2nd blown save.
(1)
5. White Sox 7/1. AJ's revenge...another blown save.
(1)
6. Mets July 16 (or July 14)...Todd Walker's fielding meltdowns.
(1)
7. There are several other 1 run losses out there to pick from....and have listed more than 10......
Woulda, coulda, shoulda.........
