My 6 Round Dolphins Mock Draft

I have simplified each round by position to make things easier. The picks are based on my opinion of need, available talent, and players the Dolphins have shown interest in. My order of preference for each pick is from left to right, the first name listed being my highest preference. [Edit: I designed the mock this way to simply things and add flexibility, trying to put a range of talent at each round (players that will most likely be gone to players that will most likely be available). Some guys are going to drop (not this many of course) but a few. And it would probably be better to take a guy that drops then to reach for one. I think it's better to see a range of possible options, since the draft is so unpredictable.] I'll admit this isn't the most thorough post, but I just want to see what you guys think. Here goes:

1. CB Darius Butler, Vontae Davis, Sean Smith

It's no secret that the Dolphins need a starting CB, so I believe CB needs to be addressed with either this pick or 2a. I feel that any of these guys can be the #2 CB this year, and potentially the #1 next year if Will Allen does not resign. But from what I've read, Butler is the safest pick and perhaps the best pure cover corner in the draft.

2a. WR Percy Harvin, Hakeem Nicks, Kenny Brit, Brian Robiskie

The Dolphins really need another starting receiver to take pressure of Teddy and open up the offense. One of these guys should be available. I doubt Harvin and Nicks will fall this far, but if they do I think they have to be heavily considered. It would be nice to have a taller receiver like Brit or Robiskie, but Harvin and Nicks are the type of playmaker that is just too good to pass up.

2b. OLB Connor Barwin, Larry English, Cody Brown, Paul Kruger

Joey Porter probably won't be around for too much longer, and this is the final year of Matt Roth's contract. I like the signing of Cameron Wake, but the Dolphins need to start grooming another stud OLB. At least one of these guys should be available ahd should fit the Dolphins defensive scheme.

3. NT Ron Brace, Chris Baker, Sammie Lee Hill, Terrance Taylor, Terrance Knighton

I think NT is a big priority, as I doubt Jason Ferguson will be resigned after this year. Obviously, Brace will most likely be gone, but these other guys have the size and strength the front office looks for in a NT.

4. OT/G Phil Loadholt, Herman Johnson, Louis Vasquez, Jason Watkins

Round 4 or so should be a good time to draft a backup OT, or a guard that can play tackle. These guys are all huge, which we know is one requirment to be an OL on the Dolphins nowadays. Loadholt and Johnson may be drafted in the second round. If either of them fall to the third round I'd draft them then, as a couple of those NT would probably be available for the fourth round pick. But the other guys, I'd wait until the fourth or fifth round to draft.

5. CB Mike Mickens, Domonique Johnson, Coye Francies, Don Carey

Mickens will likely be gone, but any of these guys would provide depth at CB, and could possibly compete for the nickleback position.

6. ILB Frantz Joseph, Jasper Brinkley

I don't see ILB as a big need this year, but I still think at least one will be drafted in the later rounds. Reggie Torbor didn't impress me much last year.

I'll stop at 6 rounds because honestly, I'd be better off picking a name out of a hat then trying to guess who will be drafted in round 7.

DT Chris Baker

I think many of us would agree that drafting/signing a young NT is a pretty high priority this off-season. I would love to draft Brace, but if for some reason we don't get him, I came across an interesting prospect: Chris Baker from Hampton. Here is some info about him I found on walterfootball.com:

Height: 6-2. Weight: 326.
Combine 40 Time: 5.02.
Benchx225: 24. Vertical: 35.5.
Projected Round (2009): 2-3.

He has great size, excellent speed, and a good vertical. He may need to get a little stronger though, as his bench was rather low. As a junior this past year he had 16.5 TFL and 8.5 sacks. And thus far it seems like Langford, his former teammate, has a promising NFL career ahead of him, so I don't have much reservation about his school.
