Rutgers has a 20% chance of earning a BCS bid
Just for fun I calculated those odds myself using the moneylines on oddshark and rough odds conversion ratios. I also estimated WVU's odds at winning @USF to be about the same as them winning home against Pitt since the USF game odds aren't available yet. I got to 20% by assuming that WVU must lose ONE of their last TWO games (each has a 30% chance of happening so there is an apox 50% at least one happens) and that RU must beat UConn (60% chance) and LVille must lose to USF (60% chance). There's also a 10% chance RU gets it's BCS bid by this Saturday afternoon.
By all means check my math or suggest alternative values or assumptions. None of it means anything for certain, of course. I just figured I'd while some work time away before Thanksgiving.
Happy holidays everyone!

Mets season right on the money
I believe the Vegas over/under for the Mets season win total was 77 (at least that's what I used to make a side bet with a friend). So congrats all you pessimists and condolences to all you optimists.
BREAKING NEWS: MO VAUGHN BELCHED nine miles south of Mineral, Va. at 1:51 p.m., according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The USGS initially recorded the belch at 5.8 magnitude but later upgraded it to a 5.9 after 3 more orders of buffalo wings and an embiggened mountain dew.

NYG on TV in DC
For any other G-Men fans in the DC market, I compared schedules with the Redskins and Ravens and created this google spreed sheet for which games will be televised locally, which might be televised locally, and which most likely won't. We'll have to wait until the networks announce their games to know for sure but this will give you an idea for now. Hope people find it useful. Feel free to let me know if I've made any mistakes, too.
AA Cited in Professorially Curated Language Log Blog for Figurative Use of 'Apocalyptic'
Quite possibly the most boring, nerdy, fan shot ever. I just thought it was interesting when the worlds from two of the most disparate blogs in my google reader collided.
So let us all toast our cheetos bags in triumph! Now if you'll excuse me, these numerically stamped regular polyhedrons aren't going to roll themselves.
Did Chipper Jones Text Dong Shots to Kelly Kapowski?
I included the question mark because Ms Thiessen doesn't name any names, but she allegedly received nude photos of a baseball player in the mid 90's who is still famous today. There aren't all that many stars still playing from the mid 90's and that time period is also, as you may recall, when Larry's first marriage was collapsing because of the 18 month affair he was conducting with a Hooters waitress that produced a child. So that's my best guess. Other popular candidates include Clemens, A-Rod and Jeter, because all Yankees are disgusting pervs, obviously.
I always wanted to root for the Empire (and I DO NOT mean our elder colleagues in the American League).
You may embiggen when ready.

"the steroid era is the most discredited period in the history of American professional sports" - says espn writer with zero sense of historical perspective
i'm sure there are many intelligent, well reasoning baseball fans that find steroids a bigger deal than me, but does anyone else actually believe this?
"There is not another American sport where so many of the elite have been disgraced. Nothing comes close to this. Not Pete Rose, not the Black Sox, not baseball's drug trials of the 1980s, not the college basketball scandals of the 1950s."
Throwing a world series is one thing, but giving round about answers in front of a grand jury that eventually do get answered directly is a sign of the MLB apocolypse. um, what?

Marchman name drops AA in WSJ book review
Totally legit sportswriter Tim Marchman names drops Amazin Avenue Annual (as well as the site's URL) in his review of THB and BP's annuals in his book review for the Wall Street Journal. Nice.
OPERATION GROUND AND POUND
if anyone needs help getting pumped up for opening day, I embedded the speed metal masterpiece Operation Ground and Pound by the gods of shredding, Dragonforce, which should help.
also here is a link to DAC singing with with Pantera right before DImebag Darrell died. RIP.
If you are not into metal and face melting guitar solos then I'd skip these.
OK NOW LETS DO THIS.

Small Market Team Incentivized to Lose Games
Well, kinda sorta. This rad article by Phil Birnbaum has some interesting takeaways from his sifting through the Deadspin leaked team financial statements, chiefly that it doesn't pay for small market teams to sign free agents, even if it gets them to the World Series. At least in the short/near term. That and lots more implications worth discussing from the article.
The actual cover for the hotly anticipated AA Annual is being kept tightly under wraps, but I thought the incredibly talented and consistently hilarious AA community could use this thread to create their own bogus versions, as I have humbly submitted. I know there are more MS Paint professionals out there, and with better ideas, I am sure.

the Mets are like the Na'vi from Avatar
in that they are both blue.
i just wanted to bring up Avatar because Aliens is on AMC right now and it made me remember when James Cameron would make awesome movies where the marines were these totally bad ass heroes as apposed to moronic amoral psychopaths. also there is no way some roided up smurf on a pterodactyl is taking down vasquez or wierzbowski or hicks. come on, Cameron, get it together.
there can be only jaun
i dont know why i cant make this thing do fan shot pictures but check this out: a horrible, horrible, joke.
sorry.
no one wants to play sega with jeff francoeur
stop dumping on my boy francoeur!

Dave Cameron dumps on Omar big time
the topic de jure is all over the interwebs but Cameron savages Omar most viciously. ouchie.
Player salaries and ticket prices
Nothing in particular brought this up except I read it today and thought it was a good article. It coincides with my opinion that if fans of baseball are disgusted by obscene and immoral behavior of pro players (like steroids, huge salaries etc) then they should go watch their local high school team and shut up. and then take the money you wouldve spent on MLB products and donate it to charity.
whoops, slid off into a semi rant there. anyway, the article is good and includes a Bill James quote and is not related in any way to the Mets' super sucky suckfest of June.
Plax Was Giants' Resource Curse
Some of you may know me I was one of Plaxico Burress most fervent and possibly irrational supporter. That very well may be the case, however, since I essentially root for laundry, I'm ready to now move on san-Mr. Harris Smith.
Obviously, so are the Giants, but coming up with a new game plan will be tricky as Plax was a big part of their offense and whether the two are correlated or not, it's undeniable that the offense suffered last year when Plax was not starting. That said, something CJ mentioned in an earlier post got me thinking:
The problem wasn't so much that the Giants didn't have Plaxico, it was that they weren't prepared for not having Plaxico.
That too me sounds like a text book case of a Resource Curse. A resource curse, for those not interested in following the link to wikipedia, is when a country becomes too reliant on a natural resource to the detriment of their overall economic health. Similarly, the Giants had such a tremendous singular talnet in Plaxico Burress that they failed to effectively develop their myriad offensive weapons. Additionally, Gilbride was unprepared to cope with the situation after Plax was gone. Despite having one of the best lines in football, a competent and confident QB and one of the most dynamic running back combos in the game, our O sputtered into the playoffs and failed to develop a credible threat once the receiving corp lost thier #1.
In other words, we were screwed once you took away the 'F it I'm going long' play.
There is plenty of blame to go around, Gilbride, Eli, Coughlin, the other receivers, but ultimately it is an failure of the organization, much like the state itself is to blame when nations find themselves at the mercy of the vagaries of commodity prices when they should have used their natural boon to invest in infrastructure and technology.
The good news is the Giants are a far more nimble an institution than the plodding bureaucracy of a sovereign nation. Furthermore, Jerry Reese is a far more capable leader than his counterparts in say, Venezuela, Iran or even Russia. The fact that the Giants didn't just go back to the well and look for another Plax-type receiver so they can continue strip mining the same section of the playbook should be seen as a smart, forward thinking strategy and Reese and Co. should be commended for again, being a step or two ahead of the general consensus.
So while I miss Burress as much as anybody, I'm glad the Giants are taking positive steps to remedy an untenable course and are repositioning the franchise for the future.
Hope I didn't bore everyone to death with this.
Go Giants, Die Eagles.
Marchman on Chemistry and Winning Streaks
Simple, concise and totally awesome. Damn, his science is too tight!
Poz: "Screw Steve Phillips"*
*well he kinda says that.
Anywho, Steve Phillips' job now is to talk about baseball players and he totally sucks at it. Poz tells us in his usual entertaining way just why Phillips totally sucks.
Livan a fat piece, rest of team just ugly, says neyer
robby neyer watched ALL of last nights game, then examined our poo poo line up and came to the same conclusions we all have. jerry may suck at game managing but omar sure didn't give him much of a bench to work with. anyone got any positive mets stories to post? this is getting a little redundant.
Jonah Keri tells the scotties of the world to STFU
a stern admonishment to the DAVID WRONG crowd. found via neyer's not so sweetly named blog.
Piazza didn't defend his manhood against Clemens
Or so says ex-teammate Darryl Hamilton in an excerpt from Jeff Pearlman's latest book on Clemens, found in a typically gossipy Deadspin post.
I know I was personally hoping for Piazza to go ape and stab Clemen's head off with that chunk of broken bat, but I think the restraint Piazza showed was definitely the wiser decision. Also, Darryl Hamilton? That was the best player willing to dish on Piazza? Not terribly impressed by your source work, Pearlman. Also, die Clemens.
