This'll probably end up in an 'applesauce' post but just in case Eric's preoccupied with the trade deadline. good read.

I know Ed and probably others hate this site but this is a hilarious take on the Shockey situation from Jerry Reese' perspective done by Big Daddy Drew at Kissing Suzy Kolber.

I'll admit that the site is completely worthless from a 'news' angle but you can't tell me you read that post and didn't laugh.

If it was any other player I may be concerned but by now we are all familiar with Shockey's antics. He is a great player but he is also unfortunately a great big dummy as well. I hope he comes back and produces for the G-Men in 2008 but I think it was quite clearly demonstrated that he is not vital to the team's continued success.

The SUPER BOWL CHAMPION New York Giants were honored at the white house by the President today. Here is a link to the transcript of the event. And here is the best zinger from Bush, a nice little dig on Romo and 'Boys.

And it clearly gave your team some self-confidence, because you stormed through Tampa Bay and then went into Dallas -- I'm a good sport. (Laughter.) We're going to send Jessica Simpson to the Democrat National Convention. (Laughter.)

Couldn't find any video but I'm sure it will be up at some point, though it really wasn't that exciting to watch on CNBC today.

Awful awful 2008 FAs

Not that we didn't already know this, but this year's crop of FAs are truly awful, and getting worse.

http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2007/03/2008_mlb_free_a.html

and thats with ARod and Lowell still on it (not that we had a position open for either).

Omar's strategy thus far seems to be to look for decent enough dudes that won't cost draft picks. Since we can't possibly spend the money thats available on really good talent, I am not shocked nor concerned that omar threw a butt load of cash at torrealba and then castillo. given that eckstein was a class B, i really think, (ie HOPE) that courting him was just a smoke screen, because he is a horrible turd.

Anyway, as everyone has been saying - should be an interesting hot stove season for trades. We've already seen a few go thru from other teams, lets see what Omar can conjure up.

By the way, i found this pretty interesting in helping determine equal trade value and what to expect for the types of deals that will get made.

http://baseballanalysts.com/archives/2007/11/baseball_tradin_1.php

still room for optimism?

As much as I've wanted to put my fist through my monitor several times today, i feel like there is still room for optimism.

The media outlets aren't going to cut us any slack right now, but there are still plenty of people in way worse shape than us. For instance, take a look at the Mariners. They were riding high in WC standings and now they're cooked. They have ACTUALLY blown their playoff chances with piss poor play. Or the Orioles, who have been a joke for years, are now inventing new ways to look bad. At least the debacle last night wasn't as bad as the O's historic 30-3 loss to the Rangers (which also involved the losing team blowing a significant lead).

And while the "we're still in first place" rallying cry hardly does much to spare the doom and gloom, those are still the cold hard facts; we're still the favorites. I find it difficult to have faith merely in Willie's trust of his guys during such trying times, so instead I also trust Baseball Prospectus and CoolStandings, both of which have us at 90+% chance of making the playoffs, while the Phils are still looking at just a 1 in 3 chance of playing in october. (and the Braves just 1 in 100, HAH!).

And finally, since I don't think momentum counts for much either, I like to look for youtube clips of awesome battles to get psyched up for the next game. No sense in worrying about that which you can't change. Not when you can watch Bill the Butcher fillet the street trash of Old New York or Braveheart smash some nobleman's face in with a ball and chain. And if I really need help getting pumped there is the cartoon carnage of Kill Bill and 300.

So, hopefully this has helped, though I actually doubt it. I still pretty much want to kick a hole in the wall. But at least I just saw Uma Thurman rip out Darryl Hanna's eye out like 10 times in the last 20 minutes.

Braves magic elimination number

Any combination of Braves losses or Mets wins that equal the magic elimination number will result in the Braves failing to win the divisional title once again. The current magic Braves elimination number is 10.

I know we should be focused on winning the division first, and that means the Phillies are the ones to look out for, and that the Braves still also have a tiny shot at getting the wild card, but I hate the Braves so effing much that I am frankly more excited about this. Plus the chances of the Mets not winning the division are very slim indeed. You can look up the odds for us, they are quite good.

So I don't want to jinx us or anything but also this is important. To me anyway. To see the Braves suffer. What fun for all.

Anyway, i'll be keeping track over at Go Mets Die Braves if anyone is interested.
