In late summer the weather in Oregon is lovely, warm and dry, as if conjured by some Chamber of Commerce to atone for the wetness past. There is a sense that you can see forever, or failing that, at least, and with ease, to the awesome mountains that surround Portland. The air is clear, as if from another preindustrial age, since potential polluters fear the power of Oregon's ecologically alert citizenry, and after the long gray months so recently past and so soon to return, it seems a special gift. On days like this it is inconceivable to stay inside, inconceivable to work, and there is a feeling that no business is being transacted in Portland at this moment, that an entire state may be on vacation.

A Plea and a Rant
The Plea
The University of Louisville Women's Basketball Team travels to Oregon to take on the University of Portland in the cozy confines of the Chiles Center on Saturday December 17th. I'm calling all Card fans and alum in Oregon to come out and support the team. It's rare that any of our teams make it to the West Coast and even rarer when they make it all the way up to the nether regions of the Pacific Northwest. Tickets are $6 (all seats general admission). Seniors and juniors (you be the judge as to what that means) can get in for a mere $4.
I've been to two UofL games out here with mixed results of attendance: '01 men's basketball team v/Oregon-(abysmal turnout) and '10 football game v/Oregon State (awesome turnout). So my hope is that we get some consistent support.
Why should you attend? 'Cause you're a Card fan and you support everything Louisville. But if you need more reasons (besides the cheap price) then how about just welcome the Schimmel sisters back home to Oregon? My guess is there will be a pretty good turn out from friends, family and Native tribes from throughout the Northwest so that should be a cool thing to see. If that's not enough then I think just getting the chance to see Pistol Shoni play live should be worth it.
The Rant
So I've lived out here for over a decade now and have had some chance encounters with UofL fans, but nothing really organized. There was a loose Portland metro area group of a handful of folks, but that never materialized into actually doing anything. So instead of being part of the problem I decided to be part of the solution. I e-mailed the UofL Alumni Association to try and set up a club out here. I e-mailed again. And again. Finally I e-mailed everyone in the department and finally got a response and someone was 'put on the case' . Turns out there are quite a few alum in the area so that was promising. Got one e-mail back and then absolutely nothing after numerous attempts of contacting again. Shouldn't they be contacting me and not the other way around?. Not good business UofL. Not good at all. So if anyone reading this has anything to do with the alumni association let them know that they need really develop their customer service skills. Just sayin'.
How does a school 'apply' to a new conference?
Is it like applying for a job at Hardee's? Or is it like pledging for a fraternity? Do they submit a resume that states all their accomplishments and then sit with an interview panel and get grilled on how successful their crew team is? I'm confused.
Louisville to the PAC-10, or 12, or whatever
It's my dream. It doesn't make sense, will never happen, is ridiculous, is not in the best interest of the school, fans, or alumni, but it's my dream. I live in Portland, Oregon and if this happens (will never happen) I'll get to see the Cards play football and basketball (I'm guessing) at least twice a year in each sport (Seattle, Eugene, Corvallis, Pullman...OK maybe I wouldn't trek out to Pullman on a regular basis). Throw in the soccer team, women's basketball, hell, even field hockey and I'm in heaven. It'll never happen. Let's make it happen. This is all about me.
Who's with me?

Homecoming for the Schimmels
Also check out the photo album at the top of The Portland Tribune sports page. Great story and pictures about the Shimmel girls return the eastern Oregon with the UofL women's basketball team.
Preston Knowles Basketball Camp
I'm home for a visit with family and friends here in Kentucky and saw in our local paper that Preston Knowles is holding a basketball camp at the local YMCA through tomorrow morning. Would it be creepy to crash it and take some photos with PK? Yeah, I thought so, but I might just creep out for a couple of minutes just for the CC.
Around the League Podcast
There's a nice interview with John Strong in this episode.
Hello, New World!
Just ran across this while going back through old posts in the awesome soccer blog that is Run of Play. Not necessarily timely, but has some interesting ideas and thoughts about the state of soccer football in America. This piece referenced in the post is equally though provoking.
While running early this morning upon the banks of the mighty Willamette I saw a fellow jogger donning this shirt (except it also said 'football' on it-couldn't find image). I knew it was going to be a good day from that point on.
Could someone please explain this t-shirt to me? I'm really trying to get it and I'm lost.
Your Stupid Rage
CC isn't the most soccer friendly 'blog', but I found this entry and it's subsequent addendum to be a fascinating read for any sports fan. Take out the specific references and enter your fave sport/team/rival and see how it reads (along with the comments).
"Off the Rez"
Did anyone catch "Off the Rez" last night? I thought it was quite compelling. It's amazing the journey that Shoni and her family have had the last three years.
"Off the Rez" to air Saturday
"Off the Rez" featuring Louisville's Shoni Schimmel will air this Saturday @ 9PM on TLC. I just listened to this week's Hang Up and Listen (a great sports show BTW) and in it they interview director Jonathan Hock. It sounds like it will lead us through a roller coaster of emotions. I expect to tear up while I watch it.
Gotta love the nickname The Pistol with a Ponytail.
Uh, Friday irrelevance? I'm highly disappointed. Way to ruin my day.
Shoni’s big screen shot
Little sister is heading to Louisville next year too. Good to have these two girls representing Portland and Louisville.
NCAA vs. NBA: Settling the Annual Basketball Fan Battle
I love college basketball, but I also love the NBA (I love basketball). Watching our beloved Cards fall to Morehead State makes me sad and kind of mad that one game determines a season. However, it's the magic of March Madness too. So I had to post this article just to stir the hornet's nest (since I'm guessing there is about 3 NBA fans in the entire Commonwealth).
Schimmel gets high marks in big transition
Nice local newspaper story about Shoni and her journey from Oregon to UofL.
Preston Knowles through the years
From the C-J website.
Preston Knowles, Hometown Hero
Senior night is upon us tomorrow. That means Preston Knowles will be playing his last home game as a University of Louisville Cardinal. This is going to be a sad day for all of us and especially hard for me.
I am from Clark County (read: Winchester), Kentucky. That sounds strange when I've been out in the world introducing myself to people. When people ask where I'm from I often automatically say 'Clark County, Kentucky'. I've gathered this is something unique to people from the thousands of small places in the staggering 120 counties of The Commonwealth. But it's one of those odd yet interesting things about being from Kentucky-sans Louisville, Lexington, Northern Kentucky, and Bowling Green (?).
I came to be a UofL graduate and fan in a round about way. Growing up in Clark County you don't really have much wiggle room in terms of who you are and what you are like. Here's a graphic reminder.
Need I say more? I whittled my college choices down to UofL and UK. I ultimately chose UofL for lots of reasons. My decision didn't go over very well with my high school buddies. Let's just say that real attitudes and beliefs surfaced (you can only imagine). This only reaffirmed that it was definitely time to move on and it was one of the best decisions I have ever made.
However, I had a pretty good childhood growing up in Clark County. I lived on a small farm out in the country just a stones throw from the Kentucky River. I have a lot of great memories down in the river valley. I also have a lot of great memories of high school basketball. We have some nice basketball tradition on Clark County (locally known as George Rogers Clark High School or GRC. If you call it one of those two things it means you are from not far away). We've been to the state tournament a number of times. I'm not sure how many because the KHSAA website might be the worst sports website ever, but here's a bit of what I was able to put together:
- 1923 Runners Up (Coach Basil Hayden) to duPont Manual (Clark County High School)
- 1925 Runner Up to duPont Manual (Winchester High School)
- 1950 Runner up to Lafayette (Legendary Coach Letcher Norton whom our gymnasium is named in honor of)
- 1951 Champs beat Cuba (Coach Norton got it done)
- 1986-details escape me.
- 1989 lost in Round of 8 to eventual champs PRP (Damn you Andy Penick!)
- 1990 lost in semis to runner-up Covington Holmes (Brutal heart breaker. I was a few row back on the baseline at Freedom Hall for that one.)
I graduated from GRC in 1991 so those last two were out of control fun for us kids from Clark County. There's nothing quite like the Kentucky Sweet Sixteen when your team goes while you are in school. But then there was a drought. A seventeen year drought to be exact. Tough times for the GRC faithful. Then, in the '06-'07 season this kid
lead us to the Promised Land again. That's right. Preston ! Knowles. I'm pretty sure that's his middle name anyway. He scored 33 points over Mason County their field house to lead GRC to the 10th Region title (the fact that Mason County has essentially hosted every 10th Region tournament since the beginning of time is ludicrous. That's one of the reasons we probably didn't win it last year though were the best team. That's why we might not win it this year even though we are the best team in the region, but I digress). And then another miraculous thing happens. Preston gets recruited by Coach Pitino and takes a scholarship to play basketball to the University of Louisville.
Now there was a time when Louisville regularly recruited kids from all over the state and it wasn't a big deal. Coach Hickman did it routinely. But then then animosity between the two schools grew and grew (too many reasons to even try to completely understand) and next thing you know it was considered a bad thing to for kids from outside the metro area to play ball at UofL (see Jeff Hall, Tick Rogers, Brian Kiser, Alvin Simms, !, Elisha Justice, etc.). It's one thing for a kid like me who is just going attend school there, but it's a whole different ball of wax when you want to play ball at UofL.
But Preston came. I didn't know much about the kid at the time, but I was just happy that a student-athlete from Clark County was heading to Louisville. I can't really describe any better than what has already been said on this blog the last few years about his contribution to the school and the basketball program. But I will say this: We as humans attach meaning to things that may in reality be meaningless. That's what makes us human. So when on national television an announcer says,'That was Preston Knowles, a senior out of Winchester, Kentucky!' it's really hard to describe the feeling I get. Or when I open the Sunday New York Times Sports Section and there is a photo of Preston on the front page, it's just unreal. Now, I don't know Preston, I've never met him and I don't know any of his friends or family from Clark County. But dude is from Clark County and attended/played ball at Louisville. I'm from Clark County and went to Louisville and that's all we humans need to make us feel connected to someone. It's a beautiful thing.
Things in Clark County have changed a bit over the years. There used to be just a couple kids here and there every year who decided to attend the University of Louisville. It happens a bit more these days. And as others have said about their small hometowns in Kentucky you can find UofL gear at lots of places these days in Winchester (I found a sweet winter skull cap for $4.99 at the Walgreen's on the 'bypass'-why is it called a bypass when it doesn't bypass a damn thing?). Nearly all UofL games not on national TV are on locally and you can hear every game and Rick Pitino Show on local FM radio these days. All these things were unheard of when I was growing up. SoLouisville isn't as dirty a word as it used to be.
I have to believe that Preston Knowles playing basketball at the University of Louisville for the last four years has had something to do with these changes. And then when I drive through Winchester and look inside a window of a building on Maple Street and it's wall to wall Preston and Louisville gear and then drive a little further and see a UofL billboard with Preston Knowles on it I know he has something to do with the changes.
So for all that and more I thank you Preston Knowles. You are truly a hometown/county hero. Have a great last home game and good luck to you in the future.
Go Cards. Beat Friars.

Questions and Answers: With Mike from Card Chronicle
Here's the article by cardscott5. Good stuff CS5. (is that like CP3?). My questions didn't make the rapid fire section. Damn.
"Some brilliant reader on your site wrote that..." is a interesting lead to a question. Hmmm....
Play Their Hearts Out
I just finished reading this book and thought I would pass along the recommendation. If you think you know recruiting is creepy you really have no idea. The list of cameos of current NBA and college players is staggering (including SVT and a redemptive Peyton Siva). It's a must read for basketball fans.
Louisville Cardinals Storied Program's 50 Greatest Players of All-Time
OK, this is to help 0nest_Abe out a bit. He really is a great, passionate fan (his post For Some People, It's More Than Just Sports was awesome). The attempt to seed UofL players based on a small sampling of people (who voted for players they saw and/or like) has been bashed a bit (me included). So I thought I would link this article from a couple of years ago. Hopefully this will guide us into some healthier banter. Thanks for trying out your idea 0nest_Abe.

Big East Football
UConn did not make the Big East look good, but TCU did their part. Unfortunately, they don't join the conference until after next season. Let's get those Horned Frogs over here now.
Morgan State Game/Holiday Season
Hope everyone is having a peaceful holiday season. I have had a great time thus far. We flew back home for the holidays and I got to watch the Cards beat Southern Miss to set off the holidays. Then I got to listen to the Paul Rogers call of the huge win over Western the next day.
It snowed here in Winchester late Christmas Eve so we indeed had a White Christmas. Also the Herald-Leader ran a story about Preson Knowles on the 25th. I found out our sheriff is a huge Card fan and a picture of him with Denny Crum was on the front page of the Winchester Sun. Also saw a hang out downtown here covered in UofL gear too. Times have changed in these parts a bit.
Then today I wake up and the Herald-Leader has a huge front page article about the Yum Center. I'm heading to the Morgan State game and if any CCers are there and want to buy me a drink or two feel free to do so (or just stop by and say hello). I will be in Section 311 Row R Seat 9 or 10. It will be my first visit to the new place and I am looking forward to getting there early to soak up the atmosphere.
Come by my section if you get a chance. I'll be wearing one of the following shirts (not really):

Happy holidays and go Cards!
