Kevin Curtis is down for the count.

Can we get Anquan Boldin now? This really hurts; as we know, sports hernia injuries can last for a long, long time. It's great that Desean is proving something, but without Reg and Curtis, we're remarkably thin at the WR spot. Seriously, is Boldin an option? I can't imagine Reid would give up so much, but he's a Pro Bowl caliber wideout, and we've seen Donovan with one of those.

[editor's note, by dajafi] Promoted from diary. This Durbin's first name is Chad, and you can check his less than mind-blowing career numbers here.

http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/07353/843046-63.stm

His best season was last year (coincidentally, a CONTRACT year) when he went 8-7 with a 4.72 ERA in just over 127 innings. He has gone over TEN innings pitched approximately FIVE times in a NINE year career. In 2002, 2003 and 2004 he posted ERAs of 11.88, 7.27 and 6.97, respectively. And his 2004 ERA was over 60 innings, so there's more than enough there to make it reliable. Welcome, if you will, the next candidate in "Who Wants To Maybe Possibly Be Better Than Adam Eaton?"

If we give this guy more than two mil a year, I'll have a stroke.

I base this on absolutely nothing besides speculation, but it wouldn't blow me away if Manuel was dispatched sooner instead of later. I know this slow start has not really been his fault; despite the talent this team has, the meager players Manuel's been given to fill gaping holes have absolutely fallen apart already. when you get three out of four good starts from your two aces and you lose all four, when you've left this many men on base, something is very, very wrong.

there's an off day tomorrow. the team is going through early season turmoil far greater than the last several years, thanks to all the hype given to this season. manuel has already shown a surprising willingness to think outside the box early this year, interesting for a man who usually sticks to his guns. jimy williams sits on the bench, an obvious heir apparent to the phillies "fortune". could a move come as early as tomorrow? after today's utter collapse, i wouldn't put anything past anybody.

Don't get me wrong, maybe there was some master plan behind it all that I don't the brains to figure out. But, for the sake of argument, does anyone know why Manuel pinch-hit Alex S. Gonzalez for Fasano in the 8th? It was clear to everybody that Fasano was going to be pinch-hit for, and it seemed like Lieby was the obvious choice, since he would have had to come into the game anyway. But instead, we got Gonzalez and his 0-fer season, which of course continues on until tomorrow.

My question is, why? The Nats announcers surmised that perhaps Manuel assumed that Lieby would get walked no matter what, and then he'd have to pinch-hit Gonzalez for the pitcher, anyway. But, if that was really the case, why not let Lieby get on, and then pinch-hit Gonzalez with the bases loaded, instead of men on just 2nd and 3rd? The only legitimate answer I can think of is that Manuel wanted Gonzalez in the game; maybe he thought he was due. But I can't imagine putting a guy with no hits in over the suddenly competent Lieby, especially if Lieby is going into the game no matter what. If someone has a legitimate answer, let me know, but it just seems like another error from Chuckie Manuel. I don't hate the guy by any means, but I don't know if he's the kind of guy that should be leading a team like this. In such a tense moment when a hit could win you the game, I don't like our manager making such an iffy-looking decision.

where's the big guy when you need him? I know there's little to no protection on his end of the lineup (especially when Big Sal gets the nod, even though he might be the handsomest man in the major leagues), but i don't think this was the start that anyone expected. it especially hurts when jimmy thome is crushing the ball in chicago. theres no one in the world who would take even a great year of thome over the next ten-twelve years of howard, but howard has continued to drop in blooping and line drive singles, when even chase has finally responded with a couple of huge games. clearly this team will only win games with huge amounts of run support, and a lot of those runs are expected to come from howard's bat. i love ryan howard, but i love home runs and phillies wins even more. pick it up, ryan.
