Niners Nation Can you "teach" speed and agility?

In evaluating the 2011 NFL draft class, people often look at measurables like the 40 time along with the less-tangible criteria like footwork and agility.  We have heard people say that you can't teach speed and "That quarterback has a good arm, but he is clumsy in the pocket."  The question, then, is, can a player in his early 20's be coached to improve his speed and/or agility?

I hope this is appropriate for a FanPost.  I think it is, because it focuses on a specific topic that relates to the draft, not the draft in general.

I believe that a player can be coached to be faster and more agile.  Why would there be track practice if this were not true?  The same goes for the various drills that are done regularly in sports to improve footwork, coordination, and agility.  The key is how well the athlete is coached, and what they choose to do with the coaching (both during practice and during their own time).

See the sites below for additional information on the topic.

Acceleration Techniques

Agility Training

Plyometric Research: Agility

Two are from the same site, but I am not promoting the site by any means.

So, what can we gather from this?  I think that The 49ers can look at some of the college players who have speed or agility issues, and, as long as their other qualities are good, instead of passing on them, the Niners could give them a good look and assess how "trainable" they are.

That could be how the team ends up with another Brady.

Niners Nation Bye week survey

1)  Name 3 cities that should be considered for NFL expansion teams.

2)  What would you like to see changed about the NFL?

3) Who is your favorite non-49er?  Why?

4) Aside from Patrick Willis, which 49er would you want watching your back in a combat situation?

5) Aside from Bill Walsh, which NFL coach is/was the best, and why?

6)  What added features would you like to see during NFL game broadcasts?

Finally, 7) What kinds of food/beverages do you want to be able to buy at a Niners game?  I liked the brats, but I would like to have ribs or a crabcake sandwich.

Niners Nation Where are they now?

The San Francisco 49ers are one of the most colorful franchises in the league.  The Niners have gone through a couple of different stadiums (or "stadia," if you're into the Latin thing), but have never left San Francisco.  The team has had Hall-of-Famers (Montana, Rice, Lott, etc.), "busts," journeymen putting in work (Hill), and flashy egos (Neon Deion, T.O.).  We have had great coaches (Bill Walsh), not-so-great coaches, and our current Head coach, who looks like he will probably be one of the greater ones we've had.  Anyway, I am really curious to know where all of the former Niners are, or if they have, unfortunately, died already, what they were doing after being active with the 49ers.

Is there a site that tracks these things?  What is Roger Craig up to?  What does Joe Montana do all day?  How about Garrison Hearst?  Guy McIntyre?  Fahnhorst?  Keena Turner?  Mike Rumph?  Anyone else, I'd like to hear about them, even if they're homeless or working for their dad in his shoe store in Winnemucca, Nevada.  Maybe they are coaching your kid's pee wee team.  Making it in the NFL is definitely not easy, with thousands of guys gunning for a spot, and with injuries, so they should be proud that they played at all in the league, even if it was on the practice squad.

I apologize if this has already been discussed, but I haven't really seen it.

Niners Nation Vernon Davis Quiz

1) How many catches will Vernon Davis have this year?  Touchdowns?

2) Will Coach Singletary have to send Vernon to the locker room "to think about what you've just done" again this season?  If so, for what?

3) Should VD get rid of the dreads?  Why or why not?

4) In what other way could the team use Davis, other than just as a straight blocking/receiving tight end?  Be imaginative.

Extra credit: If team captain Vernon Davis were an actual military officer, which branch would he be in (Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, etc.)?  Why?

Niners Nation Who should the Niners pick in the first round, 2010?

If the 49ers do not trade one of our 2010 first round picks, who should we be looking at picking up?  ESPN College Football Live was comparing McCoy, Bradford, and Tebow today, and it seems like we are still looking for another defensive beast.  It sounds like 2010 is being billed as a "deep" draft class, so might the Niners look at trading some picks to move up or down?  Who is on your radar, and how would we get them?  This is very early, but I'd like to hear what people are thinking.

Niners Nation Running game 2009: who and how?

So we talked about Moran Norris, and people seem to agree that he will be a solid starting FB for the Niners.  Who else might we try to acquire to spell Frank Gore, and to keep him from getting injured, hopefully?  Draft?  FA?  Also, what do you think our running game should look like?  How will it fit in with the passing game?  Any news on already-known plans from the organization?  I hear that we'll be using some elements of the West Coast offense.

Niners Nation Moran Norris: starting FB or no?

It sounds like a FB will be a big part of our run game.  Is Norris going to start, or are we going to look for someone else in the draft?  If we do draft a FB, who should we go for?  Also, just out of my own curiosity, how did he do the last time we had him?  I apologize if this has already been discussed; I seem to remember someone talking about him a little while ago.  Anyway, we have him now, so how will the Niners use him?

Niners Nation Vernon Davis

If The Niners need another good receiver (see the Houshmandzadeh posts) and if Vernon Davis is being under/misused at TE, why don't we use him in a receiver role?  He is "blazing fast" and "freakish"ly athletic.   Would there be any league restrictions on this?  Is there some kind of a personality issue with the coaches or management that I do not know about?  Get another good blocking TE, and unleash the BEAST!  Just make him a receiver!
