For the New York Giants, who have long been bitter rivals of the Eagles, they will be playing in one of their final games at Giants Stadium, for the organization is planning on opening a new home for the 2010 campaign. And of course, because of this, the Birds are licking their chops at the chance to crash the stadium farewell party a little early, by coming to East Rutherford, New Jersey and leaving with a win. Lately, the Eagles have looked extremely convincing, knocking off the injury-rattled Falcons by a lopsided score and coming from behind to defeat both the Bears and Redskins. However, they will need to continue their balance on offense and success on the defensive side of the ball against a playoff team in the Giants tomorrow to come out of the contest victorious. New York’s shining moments have hinged on QB Eli Manning’s consistency, and to the happiness of the Eagles, their staff, and their fan base, the passer is still dealing with foot pain, and is likely to be playing with at least a bit of caution. Nevertheless, this Week 14 showdown between two strong, competing NFC squads is sure to be a must-see performance.

Week 14 Opponent: New York Giants

2008 Record: 12-4 (0-1 playoffs)

Last Meeting Between Teams: Week 8, 2009. PHI-40 NYG-17

Game Location: Giants Stadium (East Rutherford, New Jersey)

Evaluation: If there is one word that best fits the New York Giants in regards to their display of football over the last few seasons, it is: enigma. Basically, that means they have been a mystery, or a hard-to-figure-out franchise. Of course, they were the best team in the league in 2007 when they captured the Super Bowl title over the seemingly unstoppable New England Patriots, but since then they’ve been up and down at a rapid pace. Last year, the “Big Blue” began with an 11-1 record in their first 12 games, but fell apart in the final 4, losing 3 and then crumbling to our beloved Eagles in the divisional round of the postseason. And thus far this season, the Giants have gone from a perfect 5-0 start to a 4-game losing streak, and are now fighting to stay alive in both the NFC East division as well as the playoff picture. With what has been dubbed a surprisingly powerful, but inconsistent offensive unit and a similarly up-and-down defense that has been depleted some by injuries, the Giants are certainly not one of the NFL’s finest, but will definitely fight hard and make their opponents earn a win.

Key Matchups:

DE Trent Cole (PHI) vs. OT David Diehl (NYG): Cole has undoubtedly been one of the Eagles’ most consistent and dominant players of the entire season, and his 9.5 sacks (good for 3rd in the conference) tell most of the tale. However, when the Giants last met with the Birds, Diehl was able to contain the aggressive rush of the Defensive End. The two will likely play in a key battle that will have a lot to do with New York’s offensive success. The Giants are one of only a trio of clubs that have kept Cole from recording at least a half a sack this year, and will look to continue their streak against him. For the defensive lineman, though, he is hungry to get his hands on QB Eli Manning and boost his sack total to a double digit total.

MLB Jeremiah Trotter (PHI) vs. RB Brandon Jacobs (NYG): Just thinking about this matchup has to get your intensity level churning. Sure, Trotter isn’t likely to get the official start, nor is he as exciting as he once was on the field, but the veteran remains a tough defender and will be faced primarily with the Giants’ hard-nosed, power RB Brandon Jacobs, who has amassed nearly 900 yards from scrimmage this season, to go along with 5 total touchdowns. Although young Joe Mays is expected to man the Middle Linebacker spot for the majority of the game, and Jacobs is due to split carries with speedy Ahmad Bradshaw, this matchup will be key nonetheless, and it will also be one of the best to watch, for sure. Both players bring an emotional and passionate sense to the game, and that’s exactly why these two will provide for an even better rivalry.

FB Leonard Weaver (PHI) vs. MLB Chase Blackburn (NYG): Weaver, who hasn’t been used each and every week as a big part of the offense but is an explosive weapon nonetheless, had a great game versus the Giants earlier in the season, in which he rushed for 75 yards and a score, and will now face a different opponent in the middle of the Giants’ defense. Because starter Antonio Pierce was placed on the Injured Reserve list with a neck injury, Blackburn now owns the position, and is likely to be the key player responsible for containing Weaver, should the versatile Fullback receive a fair share of carries. If Weaver is able to elude the grasp of Blackburn, he is sure to take the ball down the field against what is a depleted New York secondary, so this player battle might be more important than what it appears to be.

OLB Akeem Jordan, CB Joselio Hanson (PHI) vs. TE Kevin Boss (NYG): Both Hanson and Jordan are returning to the Eagles’ defensive lineup after missing the last four games due to individual reasons (Hanson was serving a suspension, Jordan was nursing a knee injury). The two are the most likely to be covering New York’s under-rated weapon, Boss. The 3rd-year Tight End has quietly been a clutch receiver for the Giants, and has hauled in 27 passes for 391 yards and 4 TDs on the year. With Jordan’s coverage ability in question–at least for this week–because of his previous knee pain–and Hanson’s playing time expected to be limited because of his 4-game absence, Boss may come out the winner of this battle, especially since the Eagles have had trouble containing opposing teams’ TEs for most of the season. Hopefully, though, Philadelphia is able to make the proper adjustments to “show Boss who’s boss”.

What to Watch For…

DeSean Jackson, barring a sudden pre-game headache or serious head complications, is going to suit up this week after sitting out Week 13 with a concussion. The explosive 2nd-year star said on a local radio show earlier in the week that he is definitely going to be playing, and that’s a good thing for the Eagles’ offense, no question about it. Look out for #10 on the field, and how many times the Birds look his way for production, both because he is their “big-play guy” and is coming off an injury.

Backup QB Michael Vick was unleashed last weekend, and obviously because he was facing his former team in his former home of Georgia. The athletic passer threw for a touchdown and ran for another, and with his big performance, is expected to be incorporated into the offensive picture on a larger and more consistent basis. With the Giants struggling to find a constant plan for their defense, Vick may once again receive a large role, so be sure to keep your eye out for the former Falcon in tomorrow afternoon’s matchup.

WR Kevin Curtis may see his first action since Week 2 of the season after participating in some of this week’s practice routines. The veteran backup is a solid contributor when healthy, but has been troubled with a knee injury and surgical rehabilitation for most of the season, hence his prolonged absence from the team’s schedule. Should Curtis return, it will be interesting to see how often and in what way the Birds will utilize him, especially against a damaged secondary like New York’s.

Injury Report (Eagles):

For the last few weeks, the freshman player has been listed on the team’s Injury Report, and it appears the injury he’s tending to has gotten a bit worse. Against the Falcons in Week 13, Maclin (pictured) sustained a minor case of plantar faciitis (defined as inflammation of a thick band of tissue located on the heel of the foot), but despite the injury, he isn’t expected to miss any game time.

Maclin has been sporting a protective boot on his injured foot this week throughout practice sessions, but, again, is not expected to miss any significant time because of the pain. “He could play today if he had to play,” head coach Andy Reid said. “We’re going to give him a couple days of rest, which I think will be good for him and the doctors believe it’s good for him. Then we’ll just see how he is. He should be fine for the game.” With these promising statements, it doesn’t seem likely that Maclin will be held out versus the Giants. He has been a true factor in the Eagles’ offense, and after 12 games this season, has recorded 46 receptions for 623 yards and 4 touchdowns, and would certainly be missed if absent from the lineup.

The Penn State University graduate spent nearly the entire season on the Philadelphia scout team before being signed to the active roster last week because of starter DeSean Jackson’s concussion. He played in Week 13 against the Falcons, but did not record any statistics, and was cut the following day, likely because of the return of CB Joselio Hanson from suspension. To the excitement and happiness of the young receiver, though, Norwood is now back with the practice squad. Because the Eagles released two from the squad yesterday and only signed one as a replacement, it was somewhat obvious they were planning to bring him back.

Norwood isn’t the only player involved in some practice squad movement today, however, as FB Marcus Mailei (pictured, #41) was claimed and signed by the New Orleans Saints. The hard-nosed runner and blocker played very well in the preseason after signing as a rookie free agent out of Weber State college, and was rewarded with a position on the Eagles’ scout team. He stuck with the group up until now, and with the Saints apparently investing in potential future Fullbacks, was snatched up and is now locked into the New Orleans organization. To replace Mailei’s spot, the Eagles signed undrafted free agent Joel Gamble of the same position. Gamble played for Shippensburg in his collegiate career as a Tight End and was then involved in several minor league football organizations, including the recently founded “United National Gridiron League” throughout this season.

Over the last few weeks, the Eagles have made several moves in order to lock up some of their young talents with long-term contracts. OT Winston Justice was signed to a 4-year extension, and roughly a week later, offensive star TE Brent Celek inked a 6-year deal, which in effect will keep him in a midnight green uniform until after the 2016 season. Now there are circulating talks regarding another possible extension, this one of a staff member, not a player, but an Eagle nonetheless. Head coach Andy Reid is reportedly close to agreeing on a contract extension that would make his scheduled post-2010 departure void.

With the success Reid (pictured) has had during his tenure in the Philadelphia organization, it seems like an obvious decision to offer the big guy an extension. However, there’s undoubtedly going to be some criticism if the move is indeed executed. Despite his achievement of becoming the most successful coaching leader in franchise history (in terms of total victories) and taking his Birds to 5 conference championship games and a Super Bowl, Reid has taken in a large amount of critique over the years for a variety of things, ranging from poor clock management to having an inability to win the “big games”. This situation is definitely arguable, but the fact of the matter is that he has built up a solid professional team and made them something to reckon with in the league. An extension would only–barring any sudden collapse–guarantee continued years of success and confidence in the “city of brotherly love”.

Both Reid and team officials refused to discuss the ordeal, for they are focused on this week’s game, as they should be. However, it might not be long until the front office locks up another person within the system, particularly the team’s head coach, Andrew Walter Reid.

They went through streaks of blowout victories, but also dropped a few winnable game in which they failed to produce all over the field. Over the last two weeks, however, the Eagles have completed come-from-behind wins and kept themselves in the heart of the race for the NFC East division and the playoffs. Their next roadblock comes in the form of the Atlanta Falcons who, at 6-5, are on the verge of slipping out of the postseason picture but have high hopes with a roster stocked with talent. Well, maybe not so much for this weekend’s matchup. The Falcons are expected to be missing at least a few of their key players, including starting QB Matt Ryan and possibly RBs Michael Turner and Jerious Norwood because of injuries. Of course, the Eagles have some injuries of their own, but either way this showdown between two powerful NFC members is likely to be a memorable one.

With their franchise Quarterback who was drafted to replace Michael Vick (who is, of course, now donning an Eagles uniform) confirmed to be sitting out with a toe injury, backup signal-caller Chris Redman is expected to lead the offense this weekend. Although some may question Redman’s ability to take control of a team, he undoubtedly has some weapons at his disposal. Pro-Bowl WR Roddy White has looked brilliant all season, and RB Michael Turner, when not bothered by ankle injuries, has rushed consistently and excellently. On the defensive side of the ball, the Falcons have experienced dominant play from their d-line, especially DT Jonathan Babineaux. They’ve had their fair share of trouble on defense, though, and currently rank 27th in the league in terms of total yardage allowed. Although the Falcons seem as if they would be an automatic lock in the NFC playoff seeding, they have stumbled in several contests this season, and will perhaps see their postseason aspirations disappear with a loss on Sunday. Atlanta is definitely beatable, but as I’ve mentioned every week since the Eagles’ embarrassing loss to the lowly Raiders, they mustn’t overlook a team such as the Falcons with banged-up players but a load of heart.

Key Matchups:

OLB Will Witherspoon (PHI) vs. TE Tony Gonzalez (ATL): With Akeem Jordan still sidelined with a knee hyper-extension, Witherspoon will remain at his natural Outside Linebacker position. The trade deadline acquisition has been a contributor all season, and has done a fine job covering opposing teams’ Tight Ends, something that was a major problem early in the year. Witherspoon may have his toughest task tomorrow afternoon when he will have the responsibility of covering Tony Gonzalez on frequent occasion. The Atlanta blocker and receiver has hauled in 61 passes for 666 yards and 5 TDs thus far, and he doesn’t look to cease his production now. In 4 of his last 5 games, Gonzalez has had at least 67 receiving yards, and will be tough man to cover during tomorrow’s matchup.

RB LeSean McCoy (PHI) vs. MLB Curtis Lofton (ATL): Week 13 may seem as if it will not involve a running game with both teams’ starting RBs injured and a bunch of Quarterbacks eager to throw the ball in the Georgia Dome (including one that…hint, hint…wears number 7). But a balanced game plan is still a necessity, and rookie rusher LeSean McCoy is the proven key to that aspect. He was among the Rookie of the Month finalists for November in honor of his astounding efforts as the Eagles’ replacement starter, and will primarily have to maneuver around Lofton to find large running lanes. The 248-lb. Linebacker is emerging into a young star in Atlanta’s defense, and this individual player battle may be one of the most crucial of the game, for it may determine whether the Eagles are able to establish a rushing attack versus the Falcons.

CB Asante Samuel (PHI) vs. WR Michael Jenkins (ATL): Jenkins isn’t the “big-play” guy in the Falcon offense, but he has the ability to change a game with one play. With 215 pounds of muscle and a rough 6-inch advantage over this game’s primary coverer of him (Samuel), Jenkins will likely see plenty of opportunities to penetrate the Eagles’ secondary. Samuel notched 2 interceptions last week against the Redskins, but his tackling skills might be the more important factor tomorrow against a physical receiver like Jenkins. If he isn’t able to contain the Falcons’ number 2 wideout, the Philly Birds might be in for a long day attempting to cover repetitive short passes that wear down the strength of both Samuel and his teammates.

TE Brent Celek (PHI) vs. OLB Mike Peterson (ATL): While Gonzalez is a key player for the Falcons, you’d better believe that Celek is a key contributor for the Eagles. The 3rd-year player is fresh off a contract extension that will keep him in Philadelphia until 2016, but is also tending to a sprained thumb. He has been a consistent target of QB Donovan McNabb’s in the redzone, so it will be important for him to break loose of Mike Peterson’s coverage. The Linebacker is in his 11th season, but remains quite quick for a veteran aged 33 years old who played the Middle Linebacker spot for the majority of his career. As long as Celek can find holes in the defense and give McNabb someone to throw to in tight or clutch situations, the Eagles should be in good shape in terms of production through the air. However, Peterson’s ability shouldn’t be underestimated, and all throws directed towards his area of the field should definitely be tossed with caution.

What to Watch For…

The most obvious thing to look for in this game is the return of Michael Vick to Atlanta, the place he became a superstar. The Eagles have used him sparingly this year as a backup Quarterback and situational runner, but he remains an athletic threat whenever he takes the field. Of course, Vick’s legacy was established while he was with the Falcons from 2001-2006, and it will surely be interesting to see how his homecoming turns out. Head coach Andy Reid hinted in a press conference that a touchdown for the speedy player should be near, so be sure to keep your eyes on the QB when he’s out there.

The Falcons are 12-1 at home under the coaching of Mike Smith, including a 5-0 mark this year. In addition to this statistical fact, the Georgia Dome–Atlanta’s home and the location of tomorrow afternoon’s contest–is known as one of the loudest and disrupting stadiums in the league. According to these odds, it appears the Eagles are going to be in for a rough day, and whether you believe in theories like these or not, keep in mind these intriguing facts as the game begins to shape up. it just might make the experience a little better.

With 7 players listed as “Questionable” on their injury report (5 of them are starters), the Falcons may be playing Week 13 with a squad of backups. As mentioned previously, their QB Matt Ryan has already been confirmed out with a toe injury. As if that weren’t enough, a trio of Wide Receivers are marked down with injuries, as well as a pair of Linebackers and offensive linemen. No matter whom the Falcons may be missing, the Eagles simply need to execute, but it is definitely something to keep an eye on during the game…how many people Atlanta is indeed without, and who they may have to turn to if the replacements are injured themselves.

This weekend, when the Eagles take on the Atlanta Falcons, there will be quite a few members of the Philadelphia side with memorable moments to reflect upon. No, I’m not predicting a huge victory with a bunch of Birds having phenomenal performances that are worthy of remembrance. I am mentioning previous events that occurred in some of the Eagles’ careers that will be brought alive again when the two NFC teams clash in Week 13. In this end-of-the-week, brief, and enjoyable article, you will find a list of Eagles that have something to reflect upon that has to do with this week’s matchup with the Falcons, from Michael Vick’s reunion in Atlanta to Reggie Brown’s return to the place he played college ball:

Player: Michael Vick (pictured), backup QB
Previous Event/Memory: As you should know, the Eagles’ backup Quarterback and situational runner began his professional football career with the Falcons. Drafted in 2001 as the first overall pick by Atlanta, the speedy passer out of Virginia Tech college went on to become one of the most athletic players in the team’s history. He made a trio of Pro-Bowl appearances as the Falcons’ franchise QB, and was known for having one of the league’s top-paying contracts. Of course, allegations and convictions of dogfighting brought Vick to prison and out of Atlanta’s organization, but his legacy is imprinted in the Falcons, and he is expected to receive nothing but cheers when he returns to his old home on Sunday. While he is not likely to be used in that large of a role–as he has been all year–there’s no doubt he will see the field for at least a few plays in front of the roaring Georgia crowd.

Player(s): Will Witherspoon, starting OLB
Previous Event/Memory: Witherspoon was never a member of the Falcons, but he–along with several other Eagles–was a former attendant at the University of Georgia, which is obviously the state of which the Falcons reside. While a member of the collegiate Bulldogs, Witherspoon racked up 211 tackles, 3.5 sacks, and a fumble recovery, which are certainly respectable numbers. The Linebacker is excited to go back to where he played in his younger days. “There’s always something special there,” he commented today in a brief statement to the media. “You have a good crowd that’s always going to be there. You know, the Georgia folks remember. It’s kind of one of those things that never goes away.”

Player: Chris Clemons, backup DE
Previous Event/Memory: Similar to Witherspoon, Clemons is a graduate of the University of Georgia, and is also thrilled to make another stop at the place he remembers so fondly for college ball. “Honestly, I look more at [having fellow Georgia guys on the Eagles] as the homecoming,” Clemons said. “We still all have that conversation now like when we were back in school, so it’s still always fun to be around those guys and just to be able to be on a team when you have other guys that you went to school with.” “I look at it as a great thing to be able to go back home and be able to play in the state that I was raised in, but at the same time we still have to go out there and do what we have to do.”

Player: Reggie Brown, backup WR
Previous Event/Memory: Brown was a star player while a contributor to his college’s team–the University of Georgia Bulldogs. He was regarded highly while on campus, and eventually made his way to the Eagles via the 2005 NFL Draft. Although he hasn’t been a big factor for Philly’s offense as of late, Brown figures to play a larger role in his return to the Georgia Dome in Atlanta. With starting receiver DeSean Jackson expected to miss the game with a concussion, Brown might be on the field an extended amount of time, and is also excited to return to the place where he grew up.

Player: Sean Jones, starting FS
Previous Event/Memory: The same story of Witherspoon, Clemons, and Brown can be told for Jones, as well. The Eagles’ defensive back, formerly of the Cleveland Browns, played his collegiate career at Georgia University, and is also looking forward to his reunion with the area. An education major, Jones was given an award indicating his great play within his conference, and notched 250 tackles, a sack, and 7 interceptions while in a Bulldog uniform. In a recent press conference with local Philadelphia media, the Safety said: “It’s funny when you think about it because nine years ago we [Witherspoon, Brown, Clemons] were all high-schoolers coming into the University of Georgia and you look down the road and now we’re all playing on the same professional team.

Player: Max Jean-Gilles, backup OG
Previous Event/Memory: Jean-Gilles is probably the least-known member of a former Georgia associate, but he was also part of the “University of Georgia clan” from the Eagles. As a Tackle and Guard in college, the 367-lb. lineman earned “All America” honors in 2005, and was selected by the Eagles in the 4th-round of the NFL Draft in the following year. Because he is frequently involved in a rotation at the Birds’ RG position, he is definitely due to get a large position in Sunday’s game, and is–just like the others–anxious and happy to go back to Georgia. “Any time you get to go back to the dome it’s a special feeling,” he said. “It feels like the SEC Championship all over again.”

Player: Jeremiah Trotter, backup MLB
Previous Event/Memory: No, Trotter is not a graduate of the University of Georgia. That’s what the last few listed players have been named for, but the Eagles’ Middle Linebacker recalls a different memory relating to Atlanta. Back in 2005, when the Birds traveled to the Georgia Dome to face the Falcons, Trotter was involved in a pre-game scuffle that resulted in an ejection. The LB was supposedly exchanging words with several Falcon players during routine warmups, and eventually the “Axe Man” and Atlanta CB Kevin Mathis began to shove each other. Punches ensued, and the officials then threw both players out of the game. Although Trotter remains an emotional and intense player, he doesn’t intend on missing this weekend’s matchup.

With the list completed, at least you now have someone else to talk about besides Michael Vick in terms of players making a big return to Georgia in Week 13.

We’ve heard about concussions quite a lot lately around the NFL and within the Eagles’ organization. Back in Week 7, RB Brian Westbrook took a knee to the head and has been sidelined since, and a shocking number of others have sustained concussions as of late–including Redskins’ RB Clinton Portis, Steelers’ QB Ben Roethlisbeger, Arizona QB Kurt Warner, and most recently, the Eagles’ dangerous weapon at the WR position, DeSean Jackson (pictured, #10).

With the league searching for answers to keep players safe for the sake of their current and long-term health, it is unclear what the rumored new policies will make of the large amount of concussed. NFL commissioner Roger Goodell and his staff are supposedly working on establishing a plan that requires victims of a head injury or concussion to sit out for the remainder of the game in which they sustained the injury, and possibly the next week as well, depending on the severity of the player’s pain.

As for the Eagles, Westbrook is still recovering and is set to re-visit doctors in Pittsburgh, PA later in the week to undergo further evaluation. It isn’t expected he’ll be out on the field anytime soon, but with good test results and some positive feedback from the veteran runner, the explosive back might be able to play at least a minimal role in the final regular season game or so. In regards to Jackson–who leads the team with 769 receiving yards and 6 catching touchdowns–the 2nd-year wideout is reportedly feeling “okay”, and head coach Andy Reid said this about the young player in a recent press conference: “He doesn’t feel bad today. We are as cautious as they come with concussions. We’re going to continue to test him and go through the process.”

In other injury news, TE Brent Celek is tending to a mild thumb sprain, DT Brodrick Bunkley is listed as “day-to-day” with a right ankle sprain, and OG Todd Herremans is dealing with pain in his Acromioclavicular (AC) shoulder joint.

The Eagles didn't exactly demolish their rivals this afternoon, but they did perform impressively in the final quarter, and wound up capturing a come-from-behind victory to keep themselves in the hunt for both the NFC East division and the playoffs. The lowly Washington Redskins fought throughout the entire game to pull out what would have been a surprising win, but failed to contain the explosive Eagle offense late in the contest, and a 32-yard David Akers field goal is what decided the great matchup. With another balanced offensive attack that included a mix of passes by QB Donovan McNabb and runs by several different players, the Birds were able to overcome inconsistent defensive play that may have cost them the game. Many will point out that Philadelphia was supposed to blow out Washington in this Week 12 showdown, and that is certainly true, but credit should be given where it is deserved--and it was definitely deserved in the fourth quarter, in which the team came back from a 8-point deficit and came out victorious.

Donovan McNabb tends to have a sub-par performance following a string of great games, but the veteran passer played well against the Redskins, completing 21 of 35 passes against a solid secondary. He also had a touchdown pass, and would have had two if not for a holding penalty that negated a score early in the game. Besides his interception that came off of a tipped pass, McNabb looked comfortable in the pocket and overall had a nice performance today to lead his team to a win. LeSean McCoy started at the Running Back position for the second consecutive week in place of the injured Brian Westbrook, and once again made significant contributions to the offense, gaining a total of 101 yards and catching a crucial 2-point conversion late in the game. In regards to notable defenders from the game, CB Asante Samuel missed a couple of tackles but regained the crowd's support when he intercepted a pair of Jason Campbell passes in the first half. One of the largest negatives of the contests came in the form of an injury to explosive WR DeSean Jackson. The 2nd-year threat--who had 41 yards and a TD up until his injury--took a crushing blow to his upper back and neck, and as a result of the powerful tackle, Jackson's head was shifted around in forceful motions as he hit the ground. Head coach Andy Reid is calling the injury a concussion (something Eagle fanatics have heard a lot about over the past few weeks), and Jackson's status for the coming weeks are currently unknown.

The rivalry matchup, which began at 1:00 p.m. ET, began with a jolt of surprise as the Eagles chose to execute an onside attempt on the opening kickoff. Unfortunately, they were unable to recover the unexpected tap of a kick, and the Redskins were given an immediate advantage in field position. Washington capitalized off of the opportunity and put points on the board only a few minutes into the first quarter. Jason Campbell completed a few passes and on another designed throwing play, the oft-criticized Quarterback ran the ball around the right side of the offensive line for a 1-yard touchdown.

The Eagles then followed up on the Redskins' score with a successful drive of their own. After driving down the field via several hand-offs to LeSean McCoy and passes to a few different receivers, the Birds tacked on a trio of points from a 29-yard field goal by K David Akers. Although they were able to add these early points, it was clear the red zone remained a problematic area of the field for Philadelphia, as they weren't able to punch the ball into the endzone, especially with a 1st down at the Washington 10-yard line.

The Eagles' defensive unit forced the 'Skins to a punt in the next series, one of the few times they did so in the game, for Washington frequently converted on 3rd downs throughout the contest. After a few plays involving McCoy and brief runs by FB Leonard Weaver and QB Michael Vick--who was brought in several times this week after exploding for a 34-yard run in Week 11--Donovan McNabb found DeSean Jackson wide open in the endzone for a thrilling 35-yard scoring strike. With the touchdown, the Eagles gained a 3-point lead, as well as some momentum in what was a heated rivalry game.

Right after this defensive stand and score by the Eagles, the Redskins did just about the same thing, except in reverse order. They struck back with a 4-yard TD pass from Campbell to WR Santana Moss and then kept the Eagles' offense to limited yardage and forced a punt. Several unsuccessful series for both sides followed, including a drive in which Washington began to drive the ball down the field but were halted when Asante Samuel made a good coverage read and picked off one of Campbell's throws. Despite the turnover, which placed the Birds inside Redskin territory, the offense yet again stalled and settled with a field goal by Akers, this one from 24 yards out.

On the resulting series for the 'Skins, things didn't get any better for the players in white and red. Samuel got his hands on another pass, and recorded his second interception of the game. However, Philly squandered the opportunity to score 7 points because of good field position and for what seemed the millionth time, sent David Akers out to kick a 41-yard field goal. The trusty Kicker converted, as expected, and the Eagles took a 2-point lead as the second quarter headed towards an end.

The scoring leader altered again shortly after halftime when the Redskins got another touchdown, this one in the form of a 10-yard pass from Campbell to backup TE Fred Davis. During the next few drives, the Washington defense did a quality job containing the Philadelphia offense, especially since they were without several injured stars like DT Albert Haynesworth and CB DeAngelo Hall. The Philly defensive squad also played well over the next few series, but DT Brodrick Bunkley was escorted off the field because of a right ankle injury. Reserve lineman Antonio Dixon replaced Bunkley for the remainder of the game, but it isn't expected that the powerful Defensive Tackle will miss any of the coming games because of the pain he is experiencing in his ankle.

Heading into the fourth and final period, the Eagles found themselves down 5 points and in danger of dropping a game to the lowly Redskins. Despite this disappointing fact, the team found a way to develop some explosiveness and aggressiveness. After allowing a 5-play drive down to their own 7-yard line, the defense stuffed the Redskins and their short-yardage attempts to score a TD, and held their rivals to a field goal.

Smart clock management and balanced calls followed for the Birds on the resulting offensive series, as the team was able to wind time down while productively moving the ball in the process. LeSean McCoy carried a few times and picked up decent chunks of yardage, while Leonard Weaver also took a hand-off, and 3rd-string, hard-nosed RB Eldra Buckley pounded the ball up the middle for a 1-yard touchdown rush, putting the Eagles right back into the game and arousing the crowd to a state of massive excitement. Because the Redskins' lead was cut to 2 with the score, head coach Andy Reid ordered for the Eagles to go for a 2-point conversion, and to the thrill of the Lincoln Financial Field attendants, LeSean McCoy caught a short pass by McNabb and dove into the endzone to get the pair of points, tying the game at 24 with only around 7 minutes to go.

The defense rallied under the circumstances and forced the Redskins to punt the ball on the next drive, and the Eagles were given a prime chance to score the go-ahead points and place themselves in good positioning for a victory. They did just that, as 8 runs and a short pass set them up for a field goal try that had the potential to give them the lead and give the ball back to Washington with only about a minute to play. David Akers connected on the kicking attempt, and the Birds captured a 27-24 lead. A final defensive stand and a couple of intentional Quarterback kneel-downs then secured Philadelphia's impressive come-from-behind win.

With their seventh win of the season, the Eagles now prepare to face an up-and-down member of the NFC South division in the Atlanta Falcons. This matchup will take place back away for the Eagles, in the Georgia Dome, and will be played on Sunday afternoon at approximately 1:00 p.m. ET. Further analysis and evaluation of today’s game will be released throughout the week, but for now, take a look at the Eagles’ statistical leaders from the matchup, some of their key players, a scoring summary of the contest, and a look at some interesting things that you may have missed while viewing the game:

Statistical Leaders

Passing: Donovan McNabb (QB): 21-35, 260 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT

Rushing: LeSean McCoy (RB): 17-76 yards

Receiving: Jason Avant (WR): 5-94 yards

Receiving (cont.): Jeremy Maclin (WR): 5-63 yards

Defensive: Will Witherspoon (OLB): 6 tackles

Defensive (cont.): Sheldon Brown (CB): 6 tackles

Kicking: David Akers (K): 4-4 FG, 1-1 extra point

Punting: Sav Rocca (P): 5-43.2 punt yard average

For a complete statistical breakdown of the game, click here.

Key Players

WR Jason Avant: Avant has always been a quality backup receiver for the Eagles, but it seems only now people are beginning to notice his ability to shine in clutch situations. He was once again a play-maker for the offense today, recording 5 receptions for 94 yards, including two that were spectacular catches in which Avant left the ground and completely stretched out to pull the ball in. He didn't find the endzone, but he was definitely a key player in terms of being a contributors and momentum-shifters. Avant may never be a starting Wide Receiver, but he's making a case for being one of the best backups this year with his phenomenal late-game performances.

DT Mike Patterson: Patterson rarely gets credit for the work he does on the defensive line, and it was clear he was giving his all this afternoon. Several times the 5th-year defender raced from his typical spot on the field to make a tackle in the open field, and overall was displaying a high level of intensity. He aided DE Trent Cole in placing pressure on Redskins' QB Jason Campbell on the play in which Cole recorded a sack, and was recorded as making 5 tackles, 4 of them being solo take-downs. The 300-lb. DT isn't a weekly superstar, but is always playing with passion, and today he deserves the honor of being one of the game's "Key Players".

CB Asante Samuel: Samuel was receiving a loud chorus of jeers when he appeared to give little effort on several tackles early in the game, something he's had trouble with all year. But the veteran defensive back rebounded with a pair of interceptions. His two turnovers tie him for the most picks recorded in one season in franchise history, and the former Patriot still has 5 games to play. Of course, he still needs to work on his tackling techniques, but there is no question that he delivered against the Redskins, and was a significant factor on the defensive side of the ball.

Did You Know...

...that the Eagles used a lot of formations in which Sean Jones and Quintin Mikell rotated from the Free and Strong Safety spots? Jones is listed as a FS, and Mikell a SS, but there were many occasions when the two would swap positions and play on both sides. In addition to this interesting formation, the Eagles once again used the "3-Safety" defense, and both Quintin Demps and Macho Harris--two backup defensive backs--saw action as the "center field" Safety.

...that a rotation at the Middle Linebacker spot was in use versus the Redskins? This is the second week in a row the team has placed more than one player at the position on a constant basis, and veteran Jeremiah Trotter was the primary player in the middle. Young and physical Joe Mays, as well as backup Tracy White, also experienced a few repetitions at MLB.

...that Eldra Buckley scored the first touchdown of his career with his 1-yard run today? The former member of the Chargers' practice squad earned a spot on the 53-man roster with excellent showings in OTAs and the preseason, and was finally able to score this week after getting opportunities in the last two weeks but failing to cross the goal-line. With Brian Westbrook still injured, it should be expected the hard-nosed RB will receive at least a few more touches over the next few weeks.
