Minor League Ball Interview with Indians GM Shapiro

The interview is here: http://cleveland.indians.mlb.com/media/video.jsp?content_id=5949073

It's 15 minutes long and surprisingly frank, I think.  He explains clearly what mid-market teams have to expect in the current market, which is essentially to be able to compete for a championship every four years at best and then reload.

From this site's perspective, probably the most interesting tidbits are that he believes Carlos Santana's bat is potentially MLB-ready right now and that he will be with the Tribe as early as April and probably no later than next July.  According to Shapiro, Santana's only real weakness is game-calling.  Also, he said LaPorta will be up no later than September 1 and will receive every day at bats when he arrives.  The only reason he isn't up now is that they need to carry 13 pitchers while they stretch Masterson back out into a starter and they need their LF to be able to back up CF because of Sizemore's elbow, thus Crowe's call-up.

Also, I learned that it's pronounced Lou mar-SOWN, not Lou MAR-sen.  Who knew? (Not me.)

Minor League Ball Washburn traded to Tigers for French and Robles

Here's a Link

Jarrod Washburn traded to the Detroit Tigers for Luke French and Mauricio Robles (LHP, Lakeland).  Seems like a pretty slim haul for the Mariners.  If they are actually trying to contend this year, I'm not sure why they don't just hold on to Washburn and try to re-sign him for next year if this was his market value.

Minor League Ball Steroids Among MLB First-Rounders

Interesting tidbit from Jayson Stark's Rumblings and Grumblings article on ESPN:

The testing zone: It didn't get a whole lot of attention. But the provision in the new drug agreement that might have the biggest impact on this sport won't even affect major league players.

Starting this year, baseball will begin testing the 200 highest-rated amateur players before the June draft. And that's a development that could make a lot of scouting directors look a lot more brilliant in a hurry.

"I guarantee you," said one high-ranking official, "that there have been [scouting directors] over the last few years who took players up high, and they turned out to be [steroid] issues. Then those guys never performed, and it cost people jobs.

"I could go back through the drafts over the last five years and name you eight or 10 first-rounders off the top of my head who I'm sure now were steroid guys. With the money we're putting into first-rounders nowadays, you're looking at several million dollars a player. That's a lot of money we've lost as an industry right there. So I think this is very significant."

It's a little early, but I'm bored so I'll get this thing rolling.

Maybin already having a great day for the Tigers as has been mentioned in another thread. Got his first hit off of Clemens in the 3rd and homered off of him to lead off the fifth.  Just got hit by a pitch on the wrist in the 6th.  Seems all right.

Some pitchers starting today:
Jeff Samardzija
Chris Volstad
Ian Kennedy

Minor League Ball Minor League Thread 6/20

I guess I'll get the ball rolling today.

Will Inman had his second start in AA this afternoon and appears to have done far better than his disasterous first start going 6 innings while giving up 4 H, 3 ER, 0 BB, and 6 K. Looks like, despite the low number of hits, they were significant as 3 of the 4 went for extra bases including one HR.

Beau Mills will get his first action for Mahoning Valley later today, presumably.  MV was rained out last night, so they play two tonight.

Who are you watching today?

Indians Scouting Director John Mirabelli has said elsewhere that when he signed, Mills would be assigned to Mahoning Valley Scrappers of the New York-Penn League.

Minor League Ball Trevor Crowe

What are the community's thoughts on Trevor Crowe's bad start this year?

My concerns are twofold.

For one, I'm an Indians fan and wonder whether he will ultimately be a bust for them or, more likely, whether they will be able to trade him for anything of value given the glut of solid young OFers they have in their system.

But also, he's in my minor league system in my fantasy league. My heart wants to hang on to him because he's in the Indians system, but my brain is telling me that I'd be better served by dropping him and picking up one of the top young hitters in the upcoming draft (players such as Vitters and Moustakas are still unclaimed).

I hate to give up on him because of a few bad months, but they have been pretty horrible months...

What do you guys think? Is this just a normal slump? Or has he been overrated previously?

Minor League Ball Chris Iannetta

Iannetta entered the season having won the C job with the Rockies with an impressive spring. Since then, his performance at the plate has been pretty dismal. He's currently hitting .185 and slugging .333. On top of that, he's striking out a lot -- 25 times in 66 PA. If there is a positive, it's that he is drawing walks fairly well and has an OBP of .357 which isn't horrible considering how poor his average is.

Iannetta doesn't seem to be in danger of getting sent down as the Rockies' only other option is Yorvit Torrealba who isn't hitting a heck of a lot better.

Any opinions on Iannetta? Is this just normal adjustment to big league pitching?
