McCovey Chronicles Open Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling Rant

Granted, English is a difficult language with confusing, inconsistent rules.  It is our language, though, and we need to respect it and use it wisely.  Posters and would-be posters, you will find that your message may be taken a little more seriously if its intended audience can actually read it and understand it.  Coherence is the first step. Even if your message can be read, if you write like a dolt, people may assume that you are a dolt. Your potentially eloquent defense of Bengie Molina’s offensive value thus may fall on apparently deaf, uncaring ears, and you don’t want that to happen.  Don’t complain to me that life isn’t fair.

Disclaimer:  I do not claim to be all knowing on this subject.  I do not have a degree in English, and I make plenty of writing mistakes myself.

At any rate, a few of my pet peeves:

·         Apostrophe abuse:  Resist the temptation to insert apostrophes when using the plural form of words, but also remember the exception: “its” is the correct possessive form.  Don’t ask me why.  I don’t know why, but that is the way that it is. Just learn and apply.

·         Your and You’re:  It’s not that hard.  One means “you are” and the other refers to something that belongs to you.

·         Should of/ Should have: Sure, they sound similar when you contract these paired words, but what sense does “should of” make?  None, obviously.

I have plenty more, but now it’s your turn. Have fun. I hope I didn’t include too many typos.
