I have been a Rockies fan since December 9, 1992 - the day that Greg Maddux walked away from the Cubs. I'm not sure why I didn't follow Maddux to the Braves ... I guess I just wanted a fresh break.

I'm a traditionalist in a lot of ways (get rid of the DH) but am also a fan of the newer approaches to analysis (OBP instead of BA, hard stats in place of "tools", placing more value on defensive range than strictly fielding percentage.)

I live in Iowa, so I've only been to Coors once - but it was this game, which made it pretty cool:

I haven't been to a ton of MLB games, but I have been to a few parks - Coors, Wrigley, Old Comiskey, Old Busch (playoff game). I have also been to minor league games in Peoria, Cedar Rapids, Des Moines, and Akron. I took a (LONG) road trip to the Hall of Fame in 2002. Fascinating place - I spent a few days there.

I work as a computer systems analyst for an insurance company. I'm married with two young kids. I'm already lecturing my daughter (age 5 ... my profile photo is old) on the evils of the DH. My son is 3 ... probably time to have "the talk" with him.

Is Baseball's Draft System Broken?

+

My thoughts on what's wrong with the draft and how to fix it. Feel free to leave your own opinions in the comments section of the article.

Free book of sports stories

+

To celebrate the beginning of the baseball season, I'm giving away my Kindle book of sports short stories for free today and tomorrow No strings attached, nothing more to buy, ever. About half the 20 stories are about baseball. The rest are a mix of major and minor sports (including luge and rodeo). I've posted some stories about Dinger on here in the past, so some of you may be a bit familiar with my fiction work. If you like the book, great (a positive review on Amazon would be nice). If not, hey, at least it's free. Yes, the title is lame - I was aiming for search hits within Amazon.

Broncos Trade Tim Tebow

+

This is my perspective on the Tebow trade (I'm not a Broncos fan).

Baseball card book

1

I posted this a while back, and am re-posting as we're actually nearing baseball season now. Open to fans of ALL teams. I am working on a book that will contain essays about sports card collecting from 100 current and former collectors. I'd love to include some of you folks in the book. More details here.

I am working on a book that will contain essays about sports card collecting from 100 current and former collectors. I'd love to include some of you folks in the book. More details here. This isn't a Rockies focused thing, so if you have friends who are fans of other teams, they are welcome, too. This IS a for-profit venture (in theory, anyway) so if this is in violation of PR policies, I completely understand. I'll hold no ill will if an admin deletes this fanshot due to a violation.

Save Dinger!

13

There's a lot of anti-Dinger sentiment out there. I'm sure that there are some pro-Dinger people like me. Now, you have your chance to have your voice heard ... I am launching a grassroots campaign to ensure that Dinger is kept in office. You can join up and add your favorite Dinger stories ad photos. Check it out at SaveDinger.com (Yes, I'm serious. Why do people keep asking that?)

Unfulfilled Potential

I put together a team of players who failed, for one reason or another, to reach their full potential. http://www.observingcasually.com/the-what-could-have-been-team/

I dispatched beat reporter Scoop Chevelle to Andy's secret lair for an interview. Read it here.

If you're not familiar with Andy, he runs MLB Bonus Baby, a site devoted to coverage of the MLB draft. I dispatched beat reporter Scoop Chevelle to Andy's secret hideaway for an interview. Read it here.

Pujols Signs Contract Extension (humor)

3

What will it take to sign Pujols to a long term deal? Here are my thoughts. I'm actually a Rockies fan, but the Cardinals are my #2 team, so this is intended to be good natured. I saw Pujols when he played for the Peoria Chiefs many moons ago. Pretty cool.

A humorous look at what Pujols might get in his next contract. Well, I hope it's humorous, anyway :) http://www.observingcasually.com/pujols-contract-joke/

Rebutting Mitch Albom

Some of your might have caught Mitch Albom's frontal attack on fantasy baseball in Sunday's edition of Parade Magazine. Today, I defend the honor of fantasy players everywhere in my rebuttal.

The Dinger Chronicles, Episode 001

First of all, I freely admit that I have no right to use Dinger's name in this story.  If the ownership of the team wants me to stop, I'll quickly comply. Until then, I'll churn out an episode from...

Craziest Draft Ever, contined

4

The second half of my draft in the Alphabet Soup League. If you didn't read Wednesday's article (linked within the current one) you'll definitely want to do that, or my strategies won't make sense to you.

The craziest draft ever

1

I am the commish of the Alphabet Soup League. This is a league with the rather unusual rule that you can only player one letter for each letter of the alphabet (can't have both Hawpe and Helton in the same lineup). Anyway, there's an article on my blog today detailing the draft, which is ongoing. Check it out here.
