6 to 8 Scenarios or Names

"Sabean spent Sunday in the office hoping to improve the lineup choices for Manager Bruce Bochy. Sabean said he is "juggling six to eight scenarios or names. We're trying to bring a couple to a head. And we continue to call a couple teams who are holding hope they're in it or they've been reluctant to put their names in play.""

I was trying to put together a list of some of the names that Sabean might be talking about acquiring. The list below is the players I think the Giants should pursue ranked from most coveted (1) to "DO NOT WANT" (15) based primarily on position played, contract status and potential/ prior success at AT&T.

1. Victor Martinez 1B/C - big bopper with a good contract through 2010
2. Ryan Zimmerman 3B - good 3B and good contract through 2013
3. Brandon Phillips 2B - great defender and even better contract through 2012
4. Adam Dunn LF - Thump for next 2 years
5. Brian Roberts 2B - Ideal leadoff and basestealing 2B through 2013
6. Alexi Rios RF - Great tools, but expensive through 2015
7. Freddy Sanchez 2B - slick fielding and high avg 2B for next two years
8. Ryan Garko LF/1B - Good pop, good interview and probably won have to give up Alderson to get him
9. Nick Johnson 1B - Injury risk but bat would play well in AT&T FA after this year
10. Aubrey Huff 1B - Provides sock to this lineup, FA after this year
11. Mark Teahen 2B - Mr flexible, I still believe he can hit
12. Marco Scutaro 2B - decent bat with good OBP skills
13. Edwin Encarnacion LF - bat that could come for cheap
14. Josh Willingham LF - Cover your eyes defense
15. Jamey Carroll 2B - meh, should be a bench player on a bad team

Other players not listed?

So position players, we are pretty well set out there in the outfield at the corners right now, the position we talked about, it's going to be very competitive at second base. Three guys that all bring something a little bit different, but three good ballplayers that will be battling it out to win the starting job.

I really would like to see Beltre at 3B beacuse it would present many positives for the Giants.
A) Beltre will improve infield defense 3 fold by puting Sandoval at a more manageable 1B position, helping Renteria to his right at SS and having a Gold Glove caliber 3B.
B) Beltre would return to the NL West where he previously dominated and would provide a right handed power bat that the lineup is lacking
C) Beltre will undoubtedly be a type A free agent next year that could be offered arbitration for 2 picks or signed to a new deal.

Cincinnati as a trade partner?

I have seen posts about the possibility of trading Jonathan Sanchez for Edwin Encarnacion in the past and decided to look over the Reds roster to see how else this move could be possible. While I was looking over their roster, I couldn't help but think about how perfect a fit Brandon Phillips would be for the Giants. His youth, speed and defense seem to be the main components that the Giants are selecting for as they plan for the future of their team and began thinking about what it would cost to obtain him. I would not make this deal if it involved Cain as I expect they would demand, but wonder if a deal focused on Sanchez and Molina and could get it done?

Giants get: 2B Brandon Phillips

Reds Get: LHP Jonathan Sanchez, C Bengie Molina, RHP Henry Sosa, and 2B Eugenio Velez

I like this because it gives a player that could be prominent in 2010 and beyond as well as getting Pablo behind the dish.

Matt Cain Trade Proposals

et me state clearly that I still love seeing this horse take the mound every fifth day, but I am beginning to think that if there is a time to trade this stud it has to be now. The need for a trade this offseason is to ensure that other teams still want him and his stuff before he gets tabbed as being a loser (a pitcher who consistently loses). There are a select few players that I would try to pry away using Matt Cain as the primary trade chip.

Matt Cain for SS Jimmie Rollins

Pros: They both have reasonable contracts that end in 2011 (Rollins owed 28.5M for the next 3 years and Cain is owed a little over 13M over that time) This would be a good homecoming for Rollins to the Bay Area where he calls home. Injects a MVP SS into the 3 spot in the lineup that has plays good defense and has speed that could play well in our park. This move provides a legitimate solution at SS through 2011 and Jimmie will still be under 33 when his contract expires. Could have one of the speediest teams in baseball.

Cons: Rollins is a speed player that may be on his way down in his career. Moves Burriss into the 2B mess.

or

Matt Cain for Prince Fielder

Pros: A legitimate power bat at 1B to plug into the clean up spot for years to come. Only just turned 24 this past May. Daddy could hit and this little tank appears to be getting better and better. Could offer substancial contract for him. Being a vegetarian in SF is not a bad thing.

Cons: Little on the heavy side and could worry about him ballooning up. Limited to 1B where Villalona could be the future. Don't have a contract set in place for him and would have to negotiate to keep him in San Francisco. Left handed batter whose numbers could drop from not playing home games in the bandbox that is Miller Park. Could have one of the pudgiest teams in the majors(Bengie, Pablo, Prince).

Potential 2009 Roster/Lineup:

1.RF- Winn 2.LF- Lewis 3.SS- Rollins 4.C- Molina 5.CF- Rowand 6.3B- Sandoval 7.1B - Ishikawa 8.2B - Velez/Burriss

or

1.RF - Winn 2.SS- Burriss 3.LF- Lewis 4.1B- Fielder 5.C- Molina 6.CF- Rowand 7.3B- Sandoval 8.2B- Velez

1. Lincecum 2. Sanchez 3. Zito 4. Lowry 5. Hennessey/FA

CL- Wilson RSU- Romo LSU- Hinshaw RhP- Correia LHP- Taschner RHP- Valdez RHP- Yabu/FA.

My final thoughts: Losing a Matt Cain type of pitcher could hurt for a little while without a quick replacement available for 2009, but the need for a substantial bat is that dire. You need to give up value to get value and I would roll the dice on either one of these to batters. I like that lineup a whole lot better than what we had this year with Omar or Aurilia at 1B

Thoughts? Who would you consider for Matt Cain?

I just read this on Extra Baggs Blog this morning that Alderson and Bumgarner are poised to be together in the AA affliliate wherever that is next spring via Dick Tidrow. This news excites me for an awesome 1,2 punch that is bound to be filled with strikeouts galore. I feel confident with the jump for TimA, but this is a big jump for MadBum and will be excited to see how he handles it.

Extra Baggs Blog

Any thoughts on this developmental path? Do you think they will be throwing to Buster Posey behind the dish?

Does anyone know if Brett Wallace from ASU should be around for the Giants #37 pick in the comp round? I think this guy has a great bat and will be a better player than a lot of scouts are projecting and that his bat could carry him to the majors in a hurry. Does anyone if he can play 3B in the majors?

What is the general consensus on him on this board? Good fit for the Giants?

anyone think he will be available?

thanks

He was just designated for assignment from the Phillies earlier today to make room for Rudy Saenez according to the phillies website.

http://philadelphia.phillies.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20080402&content_id=2482629&vkey=news_phi&fext=.jsp&c_id=phi

he could be a good pick up for us to play some third and get some hits. I would like him more than Castillo, a lot more. However, I would like to see Velez in the lineup more and if that means 3B than can we just cut Castillo when chulk is ready to return?
