Buffalo at Pittsburgh Game thread
Just thought I'd throw this up quick folks...
Sabre Captains
I wrote this after thinking about the Sabres need for a center. From there it got me thinking about how they got some of those players, seeing as they’re going to have to acquire another one soon (and hopefully better than most of those).
Another obvious need for the Sabres is to settle on a captain. Whether or not that guy is currently in the organization remains to be seen. What is important (in my opinion) is that someone wears the "C" next season. I don’t want to see another year with all "A’s" or a rotation of the captaincy.
With a little help from wiki, here's a look at previous captains...after the jump.
Pegula to buy the Amerks?
WGRZ is reporting that Terry Pegula may soon be purchasing the Amerks. We should have seen this coming from a mile away, based on Ted Black's statements about the Penguins owning their own minor league affiliate. Heck, I can't believe I didn't jump all over it upon reading Darcy Regiers' comments in this article by Kevin Oklobzija.
Suggestion Box
Hey folks…
As much as I hate to admit this season is over, I’ve finally come to grips with it. While this means I’ve been able to stomach (actually, enjoy) watching hockey again a full two weeks or so after having seen the Sabres eliminated, it also means I’m looking forward to next season. And with the new ownership, this off-season looks more optimistic than anything I’ve ever witnessed as a Sabre fan.
Now, I don’t want to talk about what the Sabres should/shouldn’t do with regard to personnel here. We have plenty of time to speculate on those matters. Nor do I want to talk about last season (Zach & Co. are doing an excellent job of grading players on the season). I want to talk about the Suggestion Box.

Game #79: Buffalo Sabres @ Carolina Hurricanes Gamethread
Sorry fellas for the lousy looking game thread here.
The lockout: It’s our fault
So the lockout is upon us, and I’m sure many of you (as I) are sick and tired of hearing & reading stories that paint the “billionaire versus millionaire” portrait. Florio says this, King says that, and Mad Dog says something else. The upcoming season is in peril yada yada yada.
We continually ask how these guys can not figure out a way to amicably split a nine billion dollar pie. But it’s not that simple. These are rich men. Very rich, and presumably more so than most of us. Their needs are different than ours and continue to grow, even in this downtrodden economy.

Keep Larry Quinn?
As the news came in that Terry Pegula will presumably be assuming ownership of the Buffalo Sabres soon, many of us speculate as to what changes in the front office will occur. I’m not saying I have a finger on the pulse of the fans, but I think it’s plausible to say many are leaning towards keeping Lindy Ruff (in any capacity), and jettisoning Darcy Regier and Larry Quinn.
I’m on board with keeping Ruff and letting Regier go. Why Ruff didn’t sign an extension is beyond me (I’d look at it as free money). And Regier must have set the world record in signature writing speed when penning his name to an extension. I’m okay with relieving him of his GM duties. As to whether or not he should have a stay in the organization, I’m 50/50. He is a good hockey mind; just not a good GM (especially when it comes to negotiations).
Forty: The Sabres in the NHL
I had a chance to visit the exhibit entitled Forty: The Sabres in the NHL over this weekend at the Albright Knox Art Gallery. All I can say is that I wish I would've went sooner; because then I would've gone again. Whether you are an old Sabres fan (hand held up here), or a relatively young one, this was a must see in my opinion. I'm actually shocked it didn't receive more publicity, especially with the World Junior Tournament in town toward the later end of it.
The Albright Knox Art Gallery gets a tip of the hat from me as do Ron Moscati, Robert Shaver, and Bill Wippert. These were the fellas who took the pics. I'd love to see their work that didn't make it to the exhibit. My suggestion to these guys - give us a book with pictures (you'll make a lot of money). Please. And thank you.
I was able to snap off about fifty pictures or so, and I'll post many of them after the jump along with some comments of my own. Let me say this before we take that plunge - I'm as good of a photographer as I am a writer. So I'll apologize in advance for my lousy work. Even miracle cameras can't help me.
Some words on Pegula
I’m pretty convinced that Terry Pegula will be the next owner of the Buffalo Sabres. And, I couldn’t be happier about this latest development. To me, it feels like Buffalo found a winning lottery ticket on the street.
Obviously, things could fall through, and the team could remain in Golisano’s hands for the foreseeable future. But I don’t think that’s the case here. There have been rumors for the last few years that he wanted to sell the team. It seems now the timing is right.

Eeesh...sorry for the horrendous looking game thread here fellas. It should've looked a whole heck of a lot better had I been a little bit smart. But if you have ever read any of my posts, you know that's not the case. In any event, enjoy the game, and please keep the comments clean.
Just a few questions and thoughts here…
The “Hockeyville” game was the first pre season game I was able to watch. I really like the way the new jerseys show up on TV. Mike Schopp from WGR said the jerseys reminded him of the Bruins; can’t disagree with that. Still, a huge improvement in my book from the goat and the slug. Just having the original logo back makes me happy.
Twoeightnine brought up a great point, and corrected me on something. I was under the impression Kassian could be brought up for a ten game trial at any point in the season. Twoeightnine says it must be from the start of the season. This makes sense, as it follows the agreements the NHL and AHL have in place to protect the Junior leagues. If for some reason this is wrong (I personally think twoeight is spot on though), please let us all know what the official rule actually is. Whichever way this rule falls could have an affect on how the Sabres line up opening night. For example…
If Kassian has to get the ten game call up from the start of the season, I think it’s a no-brainer to keep him. If that’s the only pro experience he can get this season (barring emergencies), then you have to give it to him. Keep him on the fourth line and let him get a taste of the NHL. Let him learn what he needs to work on before sending him back to juniors where he’ll log a ton of ice time as a first liner. If he stands out here, that’s great - keep him. There’s worse problems to have then figuring out how to fit a 6’3” 230 lb monster in your lineup.
To keep him would mean freeing up a roster spot. The obvious candidate is McCormick. Does he have to pass through waivers to go down to Portland though? I know he’s on a two way contract, which means he’ll be making a ton of loot in the AHL. If not, I’d say try and slide Ellis through. I doubt anyone picks him up. And if those two options are not good enough, just send Gerbe back for a few.
The last of those options is not a favorite of mine - I really like Gerbe and his potential, and I think he’s ready for the NHL. I’ve been wrong before (Paille) and I’ll be wrong again. Am I the only one who thinks he can be a “b” rate version of Theo Fluery?
Another option is to trade one of the three defensemen fighting for one spot on the ice - Butler, Weber, or Sekera. Personally, I don’t understand why Montador gets a free pass; me thinks he should be included in this congestion making it a four way fight for two spots on the ice. In the same way Paille was traded last season because of the forward depth, it wouldn’t surprise me to see one of these guys unloaded for a early/mid round pick before the opener. From what I’ve seen/read/heard/watched, the three of them all seem to be playing tight right now. It might be in the best interests of the team to bid adieu to one of them. The organization is loaded with prospects on the back end.
Speaking of defensemen, what happens to Gragnani? Where’s he in the rehab routine? Is it safe to assume he’ll be back in Portland once he gets healthy?
I spoke with someone last week who is truly “inside” the organization. He tells me it’s true - recent throat contusion aside - this will be the first time Rivet is healthy since he joined the team. How much of a contribution is he going to make this year? Is he still worthy of the “C”? I liked the signing two years ago, when he had legs that were two years younger than they are now. Don’t get me wrong - I like Rivet. I just don’t think he’ll be worth 3.5 this year.
Is Luke Adam bigger than anyone ever thought? I didn’t picture him to be that big on the ice. He definitely needs some skating work, but seems to be a keeper. I (we) can only hope he shows a nasty edge in Portland.
Anyone with any Corey Tropp musings? It’s absolutely pathetic that Portland had to cancel a game this upcoming weekend because they don’t have a goalie. Regier deserves a kick in the arse for not getting his farm team up and running on the right foot. Maybe Portland fans can take some umbrage knowing they’ll see Adam/Tropp together. That’s got to be a top young line in that league.
Ruff does a lot of juggling with his lines; always has, probably always will. How is he going to fit in Ennis, Gerbe, and Stafford; maybe even Kassian the first few weeks? The only thing as far as partial line combos I see as solid are these:
Vanek-Roy
Hecht-Timmy-Pominville
Niedermayer-Grier
Goose-Kaleta
The team’s media/fan relations are hodge podge at best. Yesterday, I called the Sabre customer service line to see if the Hockeyville game was blacked out. I got an old guy on the phone, who told me “Well, the team already left, so I don’t know if it’ll be on TV or not. Maybe you should call Time Warner.” I called Time Warner; they had no idea - blamed it on MSG. Dude said he would’ve usually gotten an email by that time of day (noon-ish), but he wasn’t sure. Told me to call MSG, because they had the rights to the game. Called MSG; they said Time Warner should’ve had the info. I pressed. Dude did some legwork; told me game would be on at 7:30. I said “But the game starts at 7?” Told me to grab a seat on the couch at seven, and hope for the best by 7:30. Really now? This is allegedly one of the “top four” sports in the US, and yet they don’t know when and if their game will be on TV? Shame on the Sabres for this. No game should ever be blacked out here in Buffalo on MSG. Do they really think they get better ratings for a Madison Square Garden puff piece than they do a Sabre pre season here in WNY?
Here’s advice for you front office knuckleheads - start up your own TV station. Partner up with everybody and anybody (UB, Toronto, Buff State, WGR, WECK, SBNation). Why the hell Buffalo is associated with MSG is beyond me…
ESPN has NFL Breakdown, with Ron Jaworski. That’s a great show. Educational and informative to say the least. Why is there not an equivalent hockey show? WGR should push as an innovator here. Doesn’t have to be on TV; throw up a 5 minute spot after every game on your website. Just because you’re radio doesn’t mean you can’t be multi-media. Innovate my friends…innovate.
The World Junior U20 Tourney is a big thing, and it’s only a few months away. This will bring in millions of dollars to WNY. And yet, nary a peep. WNYers be aware - we will be overcome by Canadians and Euros the week after Xmas. You will not want to be anywhere near the Galleria Mall that week..
Just a few random thoughts…
Not a big fan here about this latest tidbit regarding Philipp Gogulla. It came from the Sabres Edge courtesy of John Vogl, under the title “Biega Signs With Sabres”. According to this site - http://www.eishockeynews.de/nachricht.html?nachricht_id=11673, Gogulla is no longer going to be a Pirate/Sabre. Here’s the rough translation to save you time:
“Bang shortly after the end of the home World Cup! The financially ailing Cologne Sharks are apparently saved and can also immediately announce a spectacular transfer. According to information of ice hockey played Philip Gogulla NEWS (Photo: City Press) in the new season again for the Sharks.
The national player tried his luck in the last season in North America. With the Portland Pirates in the AHL Gogulla but was not happy and is now back in the cathedral city. Also, another new signing appears to fix: This is defender Brett Skinner, who last played for the Lake Erie Monsters of the AHL.”
Now I don’t think Gogulla is going to be the savior of this franchise. But he is a high quality prospect, ranked in the top ten by hockeysfuture.com. And he’s the only left winger with any size going all the way down to Foligno, who is a long shot at best. German comparisons aside, I see him as the next Hecht. Why is he not “happy”? I don’t know the loot he made in Portland, but if he makes the NHL, it’s pretty safe to assume he’ll make more here than over in Cologne. Am I wrong on that?
It seems like it’s harder and harder nowadays to draft and develop a European player. I can completely understand why the organization has moved to a North American Player only/preferably stance.
Hockeysfuture actually did a piece on Gogulla’s 2005 draft, right here - http://www.hockeysfuture.com/articles/12171/sabres2005_draft_evaluation/
The Sabres still have Gragnani, Gerbe, and Butler to fall back on before calling this draft a total bust (I’m giving up on Generous). Still, if that German website is correct, the Sabres have now lost out on their two top picks from that draft. That stinks.
I don’t know if I’ve seen a series of sports TV commercials that I like more than the NHL’s “History Will Be Made” bunch. Absolutely love ‘em.
How did Luke Adam play in the three playoff games for Portland? I saw he had 2 assists, and was a +/- 0. Just wondering if he looked out of place or not.
Going back to the Sabres Edge article by John Vogl, he reports the Sabres signed the Harvard kid Biega. Is it me, or do they have too many middle of the road defensemen in the organization right now? Not all of these kids are gonna make it. Having defensive depth is great. There is no depth in the organization though in the forward ranks, and it might be time to flip some of this defensive depth for some front liners.
How good is Enroth going to be? Is he worth keeping around to develop under Miller, or is he a great trade piece right now?
Again, for the thousandth time, I deplore some of the things in the current CBA. It’s so ridiculously stupid that Kassian has to play in Buffalo, or the Juniors, with the AHL not an option. Myers was faced with this last year, and it may end up being a once in a generation thing that worked out so well. Kassian is a man amongst boys in Juniors; his game is not being developed there anymore.
Free Agency starts a few days after the draft, right? And when do players start to have arbitration hearings?
When is this team going to announce the jersey switch-over? From a PR stand point, wouldn’t it be prudent to do it soon?
Still waiting to hear about a Ruff extension. He can’t possibly go into next season as a lame duck coach, can he?
Press conference?
Any one care to speculate on what Darcy is going to talk about at this press conference today? Where did this come from? Kind of out of the blue, isn't it?
I'm racking my brain to come up with something, and I get nada. It can't be about the season ticket prices, can it? That would be a Quinn presser, right? I don't know why, but I don't have a good feeling here...
Here's a dump..
Here’s a few thoughts. As always, please forgive me if I make a comment or remark that one of you had already...
I still can’t believe the number one, two, and three seeds in the Eastern Conference got knocked out. It makes me all the angrier that Buffalo caved in against the Bruins. Ugh.
The organization made a nice move putting on the Ruff/Regier/Quinn show days after the season ended. They didn’t do that last year, and many accused them of running and hiding, which I think was deserved. Picking up the option on Ruff’s contract was also a smart move, and it leads me to a few questions.
When are they going to start contract negotiations with Ruff? Picking up his option is great, but if you don’t do anything with it, you’re just leaving him with lame duck status going into next season, and that’s not good for anybody. The way I see it, a lot can be told about their off season intentions by following this.
If Ruff is extended soon (and I’m thinking by next month’s draft when saying “soon”), then I think it’s safe to say he’ll have a lot of input (maybe more than ever) on roster moves. This could mean more of an effort/willingness to part with some of the “core.” [editor’s note - am I the only one sick and tired of hearing the term “core” when talking about some of the vets on this team?]
I’d wager that an extension now would mean we’d have a better chance of seeing guys like Timmy, Roy, Pominville, and Stafford go elsewhere. And make no mistake about it - those are the four guys everyone is talking about when it comes to off season moves.
If Ruff isn’t extended anytime soon, I think we’ll be “stuck” with most of the aforementioned, and I’d start betting on when the “Bring Back Nolan” fan posts start. I’ve read a few things out there (one from Jim Kelley of CNN - I wish he was still the beat writer for the Buffalo Evening News) saying Ruff might like more GM type duties, if not taking the roll altogether. I’m all for taking away some of the decision making from Regier to be honest. As a Lindy fan here, I’d do anything to make sure he’s with the club for at least the next three to four years, roughly the time that Miller has left in his prime.
This kind of brings me to Regier. Not a fan. He’s made some nice moves…but I also see some of the lousy ones too, and to me those might overcome the good ones. Aside from the bonanza he hit with the Myers/Ennis/Adam draft, he hasn’t been very good in that aspect. The 1st round picks in the beginning of the decade were for the most part, awful. Heisten, Kryukov, Novotny. Yuch. Then you move to the middle part of the decade and get Stafford, Zagrapan, and Persson. Ouch. Granted, he had some quality picks in the middle rounds, but to miss on five guys completely doesn’t bode well for his next set of contract talks.
To top it off for Regier, he’s given out some horrible contracts that handcuffed this team. Many will beat him up for the contracts he didn’t give out (Peca, Drury, Briere, Dumont, Soup), but I won’t. I think he deserves a round of boos for the contracts he has given out as of late (Max, Kotalik, Hank, Timmy, Pominville, the butchered Vanek deal, Goose, and Hecht (to an extent)).
So then, does this make it up to Quinn to decide how to move forward with the two major heads of your front office? I’d say so. We really haven’t heard much from him as of late, which I don’t think is a bad thing. His job is to attend to the business side of the organization, and from all accounts, he’s doing rather well there. That’s a healthy organization they have going on, and in my book Quinn should get a lot of credit for it. He’s got a tough decision though now - how does he move forward with Ruff & Regier? Ultimately, this decision will have an affect on the business side of the organization. Here’s to hoping he makes the right moves.
Okay…enough Coach/GM speak. Onto to some player talk…
Some knuckle headed friends of mine are clamoring for a buyout on Rivet. I get the sense that some of you are angry with him as well. Myself, I don’t think he’s been deserving of the seven million dollars he’s been paid so far, or will be of the 3.5 he’s going to get next season. But buying him out costs you two thirds of the remaining contract spread out over two years. It’s foolish to let him go. That’s giving up cap room, and it’s dumb. To defend my stance, I point out the recent surgery he’s had (or will have?) will set him back about six months, taking us well into the beginning of next season. That means he can be IR’d for that time, meaning he doesn’t count toward the cap. Am I correct on that? I thought that’s how the Flyers saved cap room this year, by placing several guys on long term IR. Anyway, getting him back totally healthy for the first time since the first month he was here would help. He’d be like a playoff rental, except you’ll get him earlier than the March deadline.
Holy Restricted Free Agents. I think this is an overlooked worry going into this off season. There are several guys that need to be resigned, and although they’ll come relatively cheap, they’ll still be an expense towards the cap next season.
Now before I fret more over this, I wish someone could explain to me how it works when you have a RFA, sign him, and then throw him down to Portland. That money can’t count towards the cap, I’m sure. But I know it’s got to be accounted for somewhere, and that is what I don’t know. Back to fretting…
I forgot Kaleta only signed a one year deal prior to the season. He made around a half a million and change this season. As a RFA, some team could offer him up to 1.3, and all Buffalo would get in exchange is a 3rd rounder. If I were another team, I’d offer a million a year. Giving up a 3rd for a ten goal scorer and an agitator with potential would be worth it to me.
Kennedy, Weber, Gogulla, and Gragnani are all RFAs as well who made about 800 grrr last year. Buffalo is going to have to re-up with these guys. In the case of the first two, I would easily throw 1.3 at these guys (that’s the number where RFA compensation bumps up from a #3 pick to a #2 pick). Kennedy looks to be a keeper, and Weber played very well in Portland this season. I’d like to picture both of them in Sabre uniforms next season, but I’m worried another team might pounce on them. I would. As far as Gogulla and Gragnani go, I don’t see another team making a run at them. They’ll still cost some loot though to keep ‘em in the organization.
Some will argue Mancari deserves to be resigned and given a chance to make the big squad. You won’t see me in that group. To me he’s the B-rate version of Kotalik, and that’s not a compliment. The one thing I’ll never understand, ever, is a big, talented guy (ala Stafford) who won’t punch people in the face or take a punch. Being able to do so can earn you millions. Let me repeat…millions.
I wonder what happens to Grier. From my point of view, I’d say it’s a no-brainer to resign him. He shouldn’t cost much at all. Mike Grier made 1.2 last season. Would two years at a total of 2.5 be fair to him? Throw in some team bonuses, and I think he’d bite. It may end up being expensive for a 4th liner (which he will be next season), but I think his leadership is worth it. How was he not at least an “A” this year?
I’m letting Hank and Toni go as well. Capgeek.com is a great site for playing around with salary(s). Never could I justify resigning either of them using that site. For the Hank guys who say he played so well with Myers, I say this - won’t Myers play just as well with anyone? Hank has pulled this on us before, having a solid season going into a contract year. I’m not getting fooled twice.
Lydman is a harder loss for me. He got buried by a bunch of people this year. Yours truly was not in that group; I like Lydman. I wouldn’t mind seeing the following pairings next year (for now): Myers/Butler, Lydman/Montador, Sekera/Weber. Sure these could be improved on, but it wouldn’t be the worst thing happening.
Speaking of D, how big of a deal was it this year that the Sabres ran with 3 right handed defensemen? I remember when they traded for Rivet, signed Montador, and brought Myers on board, they made mention of it. I can see where it helps, and I don’t think this was mentioned enough this past season. Maybe it’s not that important?
Am I the only one who remembers Derek Roy coming in as a feisty little [insert your own adjective here]? What happened? Everyone talks about what a team friendly contract he has (and it is). But is that same contract partially responsible for him losing some fire in the belly? He got 24 million guaranteed over six years. I wonder if he would have stuck to Ruff’s “system” a little more if he were only on a three or four year deal.
It was either Sullivan or Gleason from the Buffalo Evening News who suggested some guys on the team aren’t found of Timmy. Who were those guys, and do they have any sway with the teams roster decision makers? I’m hoping Miller steps up behind the scenes. Imagine “growing up” with a few guys, reaching the NHL, and then having to tell your boss that one of your friends isn’t “cutting it.” Not fun, but a necessary act by your defacto team captain.
Did Luke Adam do anything in Portland once he was signed? I never followed that much. In any event, if he lights it up in Portland next year, Darcy will look like a genius with his video scouting/no scouts draft of ‘08.
Zach Kassian worries me. He is a man amongst boys, and will probably have won the OHL championship with Taylor Hall by the time this is posted. Another season in the OHL is not going to help this kid. Neither is making the Sabres roster as the 13th/14th forward. This is a kid absolutely made for the AHL, given his developmental status. The next CBA has to address this. Who does this currently benefit? It makes no sense to me at all…
One of the things they say about professional tackle football is that a guy makes his most improvement in the off season between his first and second season. It makes sense. You get the first season under your belt, and you know how to prepare for the next season. You’re not working out now for numbers sake; you’re working on game muscles, and there is a difference. I want to read articles from the team’s webpage that say “Myers, Ennis, Gerbe, Sekera, & Butler pack on Muscle this off season.” Is that a lot to ask of each of them and the training staff to pack on ten pounds or so? If it is, it’s time to get a new training staff….
What’s the 3rd jersey going to be next year? Anyone have a link to a potential design?
Does Cody McCormick really have a chance for next season? What about Mair and Ellis? I figure two of the three have a good chance. It’s an early question, but which two will stick?
The Party In The Plaza is a great success. From what I’ve heard, it sucks to attend, but is a great thing to be at. Does that make any sense? Doesn’t matter. It makes me think of future stadium designs. I can picture stadiums being built with outdoor plazas to efficiently host an extra five thousand or so fans, if not more. Outdoor “seats” may become this decade’s version of SRO tickets…
Is it fair to call Tim Connolly this decade’s Pierre Turgeon? Both uber talented, both never accepted as “true hockey players.”
Whatever happened to Dimitri Kalinin? I saw him in the Olympics, and that’s it. How can a guy be good enough to play for Russia in the Olympics, and not be good enough for the NHL? He’s just another example of guys who played well under Ruff, but didn’t meet expectations once they left.
I don’t like MSG, at all. If I had money and/or brains, I’d start a new local sports channel.
Go Sabs…

Hope
Better to hope than to despair…
I feel like the proverbial kid at Xmas today. Literally, I’m counting down the hours until the puck drops tonight. I may as well be looking out my windows for some reindeer.
This isn’t a typical playoff preview - I think DO covered that quite nicely already. Instead, this little “dump” might just be about something many of us in and around WNY have lost for quite some time - hope.
For those of you/us that are Bills fans too, hope has been long gone. We’re all familiar with the decade of ineptitude that organization has put us through. All in all, it hasn’t been easy to be a Bills or a Sabres fan for quite some time, if ever. No need to list all of the heart breaking moments here…
Well, today, we can hope. We can day-dream. The Sabres have a chance to win the Stanley Cup this year. That is a fact, and is not open for debate. Surely many can opine that they have no chance to win the Cup, but again…that’s just flat out wrong. They have a chance. They have hope.
Starting today, there is a possibility this hockey team can bring it’s community together. Instead of standing in line at the supermarket complaining (deservedly so) about the economic and political woes of the region, people might focus on something we can all cheer for. Sure, it might be bandwagonish and niche, but who cares?
The last Cup run and the Bills Super Bowl years taught me something. When people of all different ages, races, religions, and economical backgrounds root for the common, it’s a good thing, even if it’s cheering on a simple game where millionaires are making money for billionaires.
Today is the day that feels like you bought a lottery ticket on your way into work. You know the odds aren’t in your favor, but since you have a ticket, you have a chance. And hence the day-dreams.
Can you imagine how’d you feel listening to a Jeanneret call of a game winning goal in the Stanley Cup finals? Where would you be? Who would you call first? Would you cry a little? Would you ever stop hugging people and buying shots all night? Would you flip a car over and set in on fire (please say “no” to that)? I can go on and on and on with this, but I think it’s better to leave the rest to your own imaginations…
Let’s Go Buffalo

Trade deadline and some other words
So what happens from here?
I won’t call today a “win” for the Sabres, but I definitely won’t call it a loss either. I don’t like rentals at all, and that’s exactly what Torres is.
That said, I do like him as a player, and I think he’ll be a nice fit on this team. If he plays like half the player I think he is, would it be fair to consider resigning him to the tune of 3 a year? He’s making 2.25 now. In my mind, he’d have to play like a top six player to earn that. Considering the lack of depth they have at LW, they might have to make a run at him.
I love getting rid of MacArthur. From the beginning of the season, he was on my hit list. I can’t believe Atlanta gave up two picks for him. Like Stafford, I wondered if he had an actual heartbeat. I feel sorry for Atlanta fans. If MacArthur were to play on a line with Max down there, I imagine the perfect center for them would be Youngblood (before his Dad taught him to fight).
What is the draft pick status? For this years draft, am I correct in saying they now have a first, two 3rds, and three 4ths (plus the rest)?
I’m kind of surprised that both Hank and Lydman are still here. I really thought they would move one of the two, rather than risk getting nothing for either of them at the end of the year. I was ready to take my chances with Weber moving into the lineup.
As far as Paetsch goes, I wish him some luck. Dude just didn’t have enough of whatever to stick in the lineup. For what he did here, I hope for his sake he can finally crack an NHL lineup on a consistent basis.
I said way back in the season, and I’ll say it again (although a few things have changed) - I’m curious as to how Ruff manages the defense pairings from here on out. Rivet’s play has noticeably slipped. I don’t know - is he hurt or just tired? Montador seems to have lost all of the confidence he had earlier in the year. I still worry about Myers hitting a wall. Sekera needs more time on the ice, even with his defensive lapses. Ruff needs to inspire confidence in him. In the Olympics, the dude just moved the puck up the ice using his skating ability. Last night, in the 3rd, I saw him with the puck all alone in the Buffalo end, and he just froze. I think Rupp was on him. Sekera could have easily just skated by him; instead he threw it off the wall (usually a safe play), but Pit ended up with the puck right outside the blueline, and nearly had a scoring chance. Hank and Lydman are what they are (although I do think #5 is underrated to an extent). Butler? Geesh. I don’t know what to make of him this year. Talk about inconsistent. At times he can dominate. At other times, he plays like I would (ie - not good).
Where does Raffi boy fit on a line? In my mind, he’s not good enough to be a top two line guy, but too good to be a third liner. Will he be able to light a fire playing opposite Pominville or Stafford? Initially, I could see the top three lines like so:
Torres/Hecht - Roy - Stafford
Hecht/Torres - Timmy - Pominville
Vanek - Kennedy - Grier
Ennis - Ellis - Kaleta
Lord knows Lindy will be shuffling lines, especially with Goose out (again).
[Late self-editing note - no Torres tonite. My bad. Or Ennis. Again, my bad.]
Is there a chance (and I’m assuming he was called up for tonite) that Ennis never rides a minor league bus again? Over the last few days, Darcy kept mentioning guys he had in Portland. Common sense says he’s talking about Ennis, right? I thought I saw DO make a comment in the trade day thread that intrigued me, as I don’t remember hearing of it before. He said the 23 man roster is no longer in affect. If it’s true (and I have no reason to doubt DO), how have I never heard/remembered that before? Could be because I’m dumb. Whatever the case, that’s the reason I think Ennis might be done with the minors.
Going back to guys hitting the wall - Timmy Kennedy surely did. I remember making the comment about how good the timing of the Olympic break was for Rivet - can’t believe I didn’t mention the local kid too. With Goose out now, this team really needs him to get back to playing how he was out of the gate…
Wonder what Roy was thinking earlier in the day. I think (ie - I speculate) that he and Ruff may have somewhat of a contentious relationship. Do you think he would’ve welcomed a change in scenery? I do. But now that he didn’t get one, how will he react?
Stupid jersey question - I know there are restrictions on 3rd unis during the regular season, but are there any during the playoffs? And any chance at all Miller plays an NHL game with his Olympic mask?
What number will Torres wear here?
I live about five minutes from HSBC. I’m tempted to keep the sound off on the TV for the beginning of the telecast, and see if I can hear the roar from the crowd once they salute Miller for his stellar play in the Olympics. What’s the over/under on the length of the standing ovation? I say a minute and a half. That might not sound like much, but it’d be one hell of an ovation…
So, back to the title of this dump. Are they a better team today than yesterday? For the remainder of this season, I say yes. No matter what some will say, this is a playoff team. How far they can last is a topic for a different day…

Some blah blah blah as Olympic hockey starts
I’ve said this before, and I’ll say it again - If you would’ve told me the Sabres would be in the spot they’re in now back in September, I wouldn’t have agreed with you, but would have been pleasantly surprised to say the least.
The question now is - what do they do from here? Did I read correctly somewhere that Darcy has made a trade at/near the deadline for 11 years in a row now? I guess that shows he’s working the phones at least.
I’m not even going to try and predict or suggest any trades or roster moves. For me, it’d be an exercise in futility at best. Darcy does everything in stealth mode. I can’t recall one move he made that was predicted by any of the hockey sites out there. Dude keeps it close to the vest…
Now I can say there are a few players who I wouldn’t mind leaving in a trade, but none would be a surprise to any of you. They’re all the same guys we bring up all of the time - Roy, Stafford, MacArthur, etc.
In my mind, there are really only four untouchables in the entire organization - Miller, Myers, Vanek, and Luke Adam. The first two were obvious. The third is a guy I’m not giving up on yet, and the fourth might be a bit of surprise to some, but is a kid I think has through the roof potential.
Quick question - how many draft picks do the Sabres have for both the 2010 and 2011 entry drafts? I know they’re not loaded like Boston is, but I think they have all of their picks, plus a few extra 3rds or 4ths. Am I correct? I’m not really sure.
Back to Darcy. I’ve defended him and the ownership more than I’ve cared to during his tenure. Hearing “the Sabres are cheap” has chapped me over the years, because I just don’t see it. But this year, it might be a little different - I may not be willing to put up my dukes for Regier & Co. if they don’t spend a little more.
According to capgeek.com, and from this page here, the Sabres have the ability to pick up a player in the 5 million dollar a year cap hit range. I’m leaving a little wiggle room there, and not going right up to the 6.3 number. Also, I don’t know if that number will be the same come March 3rd.
A five million dollar man is exactly what I’m looking for (I don’t want it to be a rental though). Plenty of teams would love to dump some cap space, and Regier has the resources to make a move. A player in that salary range should be a decent addition to your organization. Either way, it’d be a shame if they don’t use that space to get better.
I heard the following point made by the fellows on the WGR morning show. They (and sorry for not giving exact props to whomever made the comment) said how much of a difference it means financially to the organization to add home playoff games to the season. What a great point, and yet so simple. I’m angry with myself for having forgotten that.
If memory serves me correctly from the last two playoff seasons, each home playoff game added about 1.5 to 2 million dollars to Galisano’s bottom line. That’s a nice chunk of change for an owner. That’s all freebie money - players don’t get paid during the playoffs.
So, it’s pretty simple to me. Spend a little loot. Just a little more. It’d only take about one extra playoff game to get the money back, and could even pay off more with any kind of an extended Cup run.
On to some other stuff…
Lindy Ruff might be my favorite coach of all time in Buffalo history, for both the Sabres and the Bills. Hold your horses there Marv Levy-lovers; I only said “might.” Anyway, I think the fact that he is on the Canadian coaching staff is a testament to his coaching ability. If he were ever let go here, it would take him two minutes to get another head coaching job in the NHL.
Speaking of Ruff, I wonder how much say he’ll have as we approach the trade deadline. I know the world is a smaller place now, but I also kind of figure he’s pretty busy with that Olympic stuff. GMs around the league (I assume) are probably in the midst of organization evaluations (i.e. - are they buyers or sellers?). I wonder if it’s better for Ruff to be surrounded by the world’s greatest talent, or working side by side with Regier.
By the way - that Canadian team is sick.
Just wondering…how many guys like Vanek are there who aren’t in the Olympics because their country didn’t qualify? Could you put together a decent team from that list?
Tip of my hat to Brian Burke. He’s not liked by many, but he’s got all of my respect. Losing a son like he did a week before running the USA in the Olympics while concurrently running the Leafs - wow. That’s too much for one guy to handle. Good luck Mr. Burke.
A segue from the Olympics. Would the NHL be best served using no touch icing? I think so. If you did that, then you could square out the corners more in an NHL rink, and make them a little wider. I never want to move away from the 6 X 4 nets, but something has to be done about scoring. I think tweeking the current rinks could help, if done the right way.
Is there another player on this team in more need of a break than Rivet? He needs a “comeback” after the break, as does Goose. This is a better team when the two of them are healthy and at full strength.
Am I the only one who thinks it’s dumb to have a total trade moratorium during the Olympics? What if two teams wanted to make a trade with players that weren’t in Vancouver? Why should that not be allowed to happen?
What does the NHL have to do to get back on ESPN?
How come Empire was never replaced? Why isn’t there a local/cable TV channel that covers the Sabres, Bills, and UB exclusively? I just get the feeling the Sabres would do better if they had their own or shared network, rather than pimping out games via MSG.
Why is it so hard to make good ice?
Anyone else think Dominic Moore wishes he would’ve taken that original offer by the Leafs of over two million a year? He wanted 3 or 4. I hope he fired his agent…
I’m all for the Portland Pirates moving to Albany. I’d like to see it go a step further west, and make it back to Rochester. Buffalo/Rochester is a relationship that never should have ended.
Why is it not okay for Ralph Wilson to sell a home game to Toronto, but it’s okay for Sabre season ticket holders to sell their tickets to Leaf fans for four home games?
How come I really don’t hear of any current Sabre doing some charitable work in the city of Buffalo? I know Rob Ray and Patty were once in a lifetime people, but is it so much to ask one dude from this squad to really step up and make a difference is some peoples’ lives? Don’t give me donating tickets or suites either - I want to hear about someone doing face to face people work.
I’d love to see the Sabres bring back Jim Lorenz for a game or two down the stretch. Make it a three man booth, with Jeanneret and Neale. The three of them would probably be more entertaining than any game itself.
You really read all of this? Didn’t think anyone would make it this far…
Peace. Go Sabres…

15
Really? 15? Wow…that’s a lot of games for one month. I originally thought November’s schedule was a bit different, with the whole “Wed-Fri-Sat” thing repeated over, and over, and over. This month has got to tie a Sabre record for most games in a month (I‘m too lazy to look it up though). Thanks Olympics…
A lot of folks were/are hoping for better back up goalie play through a roster move; myself included. Kind of wished it would’ve happened by now. Since it didn’t, I guess we all (except “no-faithers” tedrecommends and Ron A) have to do some rooting for Lalime. I’m guessing he’ll get plenty of time this month - let’s hope he does well.
Gaustad’s injury couldn’t have come at a worse time. You have a big, physical guy 2nd in the league in face-offs playing close to the best hockey of his career, and now he’s gone as you enter the most condensed part of your schedule.
It wasn’t just blogs calling them out, but it seemed like the mainstream media started hacking on the Sabres two top lines. They kind of responded over the last two games. Let’s hope it’s the beginning of a roll through December…
Sekera is going to help this team one way or another. I’d prefer that he’d stay here, and continue to develop into a top pairing defensemen. On the other hand, he could really fetch a lot in a trade, and (IMO) if the team tries to bring in a top six forward, he’d be something to dangle…
I like Vanek… a lot. I think he’s a bonafide superstar. There is no one as skilled as he is who hangs out in front of the net. But I can’t help but think sometimes - would I rather have had four (count ‘em 4) 1st round draft picks for him had they not matched the Edmonton offer?
There were stories about how Lindy was giving the team an easier go of it so far this season. More days off, later practices, yada, yada. I know I made the point earlier as to how many games this team plays this month, but the truth is, a lot of other teams are just as busy. Did Lindy do that because of this Olympic schedule? Did other teams do the same?
They have a chance for thirty points this month. My guess is they get 19.
The Office
This is completely off the topic of football. I noticed over the last two years or so that a good bunch of you guys are fans of the show The Office. I'll admit - I had never given the show a shot (I'm really selective about my TV habits). Well, lately, I've been catching reruns here and there, and find the show to be one of the funniest things I've ever watched in my life. I'm literally pissed at myself for never having given the show a chance before. Anyway, I have a question for you guys. How should I watch this show going forward? Do I buy the first few seaons, and watch nothing but that until I catch up? Do I just start DVRing the hell out of the show? Is there a best of cd that I can get? Any help is a bonus here fellas. Thanks in advance...
A cure for the Bills injury woes?
I lifted this from The Sporting News Fly, in my opinion, one of the greatest columns there is.
Who knew you could get healing via text? Fly gets new-age medicine, but this is sort of different. Ricky Williams practices pranic healing. Here's how practitioner Daniel O'Hara tells the Miami Herald it works: "Ricky will send me a text message saying, for example, to work on his ankle. I visualize Ricky's ankle as if he's standing in front of me. I visualize him glowing. I make a sweeping motion over my ankle to remove the dirty energy from his ankle that's creating an abnormality and give his body fresh, revitalizing energy. Ricky could be doing anything when I'm doing this." Hey, whatever works. The 5-5 Dolphins could use some more fresh, revitalizing energy from Williams.
Ugh
Ugh. That’s how I feel about this football season. Just ugh. I don’t know what’s worse - the way this organization is run, or our nation’s Health Care System. Well, at least I’m not this guy. (If you want the video of it, just Google “Giants fan crying.” It’s got some of those nasty words, which is why I didn’t do the direct link thing.)
Anyway, here’s a few questions and some other stuff too…

Number one, twice...
Pretty bush if you ask me. No class...
Chase Daniel?
Would anyone be adverse to signing Chase Daniel? I'd give him a look on the roster for a few weeks, and let Hamdam go. It might be worth it to see if the kid has anything. It's not like we have any QB prospects for the future...
I didn’t watch the whole game Saturday, but enough to ask these questions...
What happens when Lydman comes back? Myers definitely has to stay in the
lineup. Is this where they finally part ways with Paetsch? I doubt it. I bet
Hank just gets the bench. Myers will stay up with the team until his ten games
are up, and then he’ll be sent back to junior hockey. Darcy will wait for an
injury somewhere, and unload someone, and recall Myers for the season. This is
just my prediction, and is based on my belief that Myers can come back to the
NHL after being reassigned to juniors. Am I correct in that last sentence? I’m
not even sure myself…
What happens when Mair comes back? Kennedy has impressed me as of late. I
think he’s ready for the NHL now, and never knew he had a little nasty to him.
Also, I didn’t realize he’s only 173 - I think he plays bigger than that. My
guess once Mair comes back is Ellis getting the boot. Would someone pick him
up, or would he make it through waivers and go to Portland?
I heard Bulldog say this, and I agree - why is Myers wearing number 57? Why
can’t he wear a normal number? I like Kennedy as a 13 though…
How does Paille get back into the lineup, and where?
Montador played with more skill than I expected. I was looking for Hal Gill
like skating, and Randy Wood like hands.
This was an email.
I wrote an email to some of my Sabre loving friends from down south. They were all born in Buffalo, and remain diehards to the day. Coverage down there can be tough sometimes, so I thought I'd help 'em out a little....
Blah blah blah
Here’s some questions/comments I have. As always, if I broach upon a topic that one of you have already have, then I apologize for not giving you props for it….
This isn’t a dump…just a blurb.
I had a conversation today with Greg Laybourn, safety, from Oregon State. He was in town for a tryout at OBD.
First thing I thought was that this was not a big dude. He acknowledged as much, but made sure to mention he was a student of the game. This kid was the leading tackler in the Pac 10 last year, so who the hell am I to question his skills. Super polite guy, and very well spoken; the kind of guy you could tell likes football, and who likes to play it.
Like an idiot, I asked what was it like to play with Jaruis Byrd. He replied, “Uh, he played for Oregon, our arch rival.” Stupid me. We kept talking about football and he brought up Andy Levitre. Told me how amazing he was, and that he never saw a guy that big along the OL be that athletic. The “short arm” thing was brought up, but so was the versatility and leadership.
He also brought up Keith Ellison. He had nothing but mucho respect for him.
Also talked briefly with Leon Freeman, an OLB from Baylor. Same thing as Laybourn - super polite. If this dude is a LB, I would not want to be a RB.
On to the UFL…
I’m paying attention to this league. I think it has the right idea for the long haul, but I think they’re being dumb right off of the bat. Here’s why:
- Why is the team cap at almost 20 million a team? That’s what I heard/read; could be wrong. Even with only 4 teams, a Versus contract ain’t gonna net you that much, let alone cover the rest of your overhead.
- Why are they playing in the fall? Why not take advantage of the down time in sports when the NHL and NBA end, and MLB is king?
- Losman is the QB with local ties to this league, and deservedly so. But with Drew Willy being released by Baltimore today, might he have the chance to be a UFL QB? And will Losman now start a VegasLives.Org publicity stunt only to abandon it once he doesn’t like it there anymore?
- Who are the guys with any links to the Bills who might have a go-round with the UFL?
- Can guys who sign with the UFL just leave abruptly if offered a cup of coffee in the NFL?
- How many of you will play UFL fantasy football? For the record, I’d do it. Something small - maybe ten bucks or so for the entry.
- Will Vegas put lines out on these games?
- Why is this league not marketing itself? I know it’s only four teams. I know the season is only six games long. But still, if done the right way, it could be a huge success…
Is Langston Walker worthy of extension talk? He’s been a good teammate if you ask me.
When the schedule came out, I was happy the Jets home game was shipped out to Toronto. Was I short-sighted, maybe selfish? I hate that home game every year - hate it. But I’m thinking now the division is a lot closer than I thought (I really think it’s a crap shoot). Isn’t giving away a divisional home game away two years in a row despicable?
I read the Giants were selling the naming rights to their practice jerseys and practice field to Timex, from PFT. Now, we all know Wilson isn’t going to sell the naming rights to the stadium, just because…well…who knows. But, does he really need the practice field named after him as well? Isn’t that overkill? I thought the Timex deal was/is 15 for 35. Even if Buffalo got 15 for 1, isn’t that better than nothing at all?
Last I saw the Bills/Pats line for the opener, it was minus nine and a half.; never caught the over/under though. Anyone got that?
When does T.O.’s show air? What’s the percent that we will watch it?

Dump
Here’s a quick brain dump…
I know it’s early, but who’s got the early leg up on the LB spot opposite Mitchell? For the record, I’m pulling for Bowen.
Who is Kyle Ward? And why is Chris Brown even mentioning him? Between him, Cary Harris, and Ellis Lankster - who is making this team, or ending up on the practice squad?
Does John McCargo have competition? Or, is his only competition himself? Was Kolar really a bum for a DL coach? I think this might be one of the most underrated stories of the off season. Given Stroud’s age and all, a quality 4th DT is a must have position in my book. He has the god given talent to be a number two guy; maybe even a number one. Sanders has his work cut out for him here.
I’m okay with Berman doing the honors for Ralph. From a marketing point of view, it’s actually really kind of smart.
Does Youboty stay healthy this year? Supposedly, he’ll be ready to go soon. I think he’s as much of a wild card to this defense as McCargo is.
Does anyone know why Nelson is missing OTA time? I just can’t fathom why a rookie would be missing any time at all.
I like Steve Johnson, and I think many of us do here, maybe to a fault. But how smart/cool is it that he was the fourth wheel in the Edwards/Evans/TO extra practice session? If you ask me, that’s the way you win a spot on an NFL team. Who knows…he might not make it here. But I have to think that watching and learning from Evans and TO has to help you somewhat.
Jets defense is talking a lot of smack already. Growing up on Bills football in the late 70’s/early 80’s made me hate the Dolphins. Over the last few years, I’ve hated/admired the Pats. I think this year, my displeasure may be directed towards the Jets, and their fans. Good luck Toronto with that game. You might not want NFL football after you see that display of Jet-ish-ness.
Where has Marv Levy been? Haven’t heard a word from him in awhile. Did he and Ralph have a falling out? I always wondered why he completely walked away. I was very surprised he didn’t stay on in some advisor kind of role.
Knock on wood - no off season stories featuring Lynch so far. Everyone uses the phrase “no news is good news” at one time or another. In his case, it is so true….
Am I the only one amazed that TO doesn’t have some kind of a “popcorn” deal in the works? Admit it - each and every one of you reading this would easily shell out five bucks for a bag of TO/Bills microwaveable popcorn if some of the proceeds went to a charity.
Speaking of TO…why do I get the feeling he’ll be the home run threat, and Evans will play a role he’s unfamiliar with (ie - possession type WR)?
Early word is that Eric Wood is the funk. What about Levitre? I’m hoping I’ll be hearing the same thing about him soon.
The rule that keeps a kid like Byrd away from OBD is just stupid. What good does that rule serve anyone? How can anyone justify that?
One of my friends has been banging my sister for awhile now, and they’re finally gonna tie the knot on August 29th. The stag is two weeks before that. Since most (if not all) of the guys in our FF league will be at the stag, is it considered poor taste to kill two birds with one stone there? Stag, Stripper(s), Draft - is that a bad day?
I’ll do some fessing up here. For several years, I have hated the NBA. I loved it way back in the day, from the time Bird & Magic came up together through the Jordan years. Since then, I’ve been nothing but a hockey and football guy though. But for some reason, I got hooked into the NBA playoffs this year, and not just as a gambling degenerate. What gives? Should I be worried about this?
Fessing up, part duex - I’m still surprised at how little Fred Jackson got in his extension. I was off by over a million a year, and I’d like to think I’m usually a lot closer than that. Good for the Bills and their bottom line.
The Titans recently starting hawking NASCAR like patches on their practice jerseys for sponsorships, and my guess is that the rest of the league follows suit. Any chance we could get Buffalo Rumblings to sponsor the practice jersey? That would be a jersey I’d buy for sure…
And while on the topic of adding revenue, why do they not have a deal in place with the NY State Lottery? Like many level headed folks, I don’t waste my time with those stupid scratch offs, knowing they are a waste of money. And this comes from someone who really, really, likes to gamble. Anyway, they should get this done soon. Everyday that goes by is a day they are basically passing on free money, and that’s just dumb.
The first two home games will be tailgating doozies with the four o’clock starts. It’ll make for a long day for fans, and more so for OP po po. Anyway, does anyone have any new tailgating games? What’s this year’s version of Can Jam?
Extensions - I love handing them out. If I could, I’d extend my own username here at Buffalo Rumblings. Who is the number one Bill to deserve one this off season?
Nice to see Chris Brown from the team’s home page note that so far, this has been the highest attended set of OTAs in the Jauron era. This kind of sort of tells me that the players must really like him, and know they’re playing for his job.
I heard someone mention that it was only 100 days to the opener. Is that math correct? I’m too lazy to look at a calendar. If so, that’s awesome. The season is so much closer then you think. 100 days is nothing. My season ticket gang already started talking about what to make for the home opener.
I’ve become a fan of the National Football Post website. But today, I think I saw the beginning of something I’ve been predicting for a few years now. Matt Bowen (yup - a former Bill) added a pic of a porn star in his column, kind of like Easterbrook from TMQ introduces a cheer babe each week. I’ve been saying for years - someday, someone will run a website with good football stuff, and hardcore porn. I’m not saying NFP will. But I am saying I’m sure someone will soon, and chances are they are going to make a boatload of money. I’m not saying I would do it, or even if I like the idea. I’m just saying…
One more request, and then I’m done. Anyone with a different (but good) BBQ idea, please feel free to throw my way. Always looking for something different.
Peace guys…
