Back when Whitner was drafted, I, like many of you, screamed to the high heavens, wondering why Ngata wasn’t the pick. My way of building a team is and has been to build through the lines. At the time, I truly felt Ngata would’ve helped Buffalo immensely, even if he didn’t fit the traditional specs of a Cover 2 DT.

Over the last two years, I really wasn’t overly impressed with the play of #20. Sure he was solid, but he didn’t make the big plays associated with a guy drafted in his spot. Maybe it was unfair to expect much, considering the talent he was surrounded with. Anyway…

Is this guy quickly becoming “the” leader of the Bills? I’m only going on a couple of puff pieces by CB at the teams’ home page. But, the way he has seemingly taken both McKelvin and Hardy under his wing certainly should be lauded. Maybe it wasn’t reported, but I can’t think of another vet, young or old, who has taken the time to show the younger guys the ropes. Personally, I think this speaks very well of Whitner. Maybe Levy & Co really did know something about him that none of us did, Mel Kiper included.

With an assumed increase in the talent level surrounding Whitner, maybe this is the year he breaks out. He seems to be a pro’s pro, and the type of guy you want to root for. If I would have known this two years and three months ago, I definitely wouldn’t have “bashed” the pick; I would have applauded it.

Now please intercept and sack Tom Brady....

Why am I not happy with this article?

I’m really looking forward to the 2008 NFL year, as are most reading this. Alexander Pope would agree - hope does spring eternal…

With that being said (and typed), I have somewhat of a concern (an uneducated one at best) with the way the offense is supposedly going to run this year.

Why is Schonert running what seems to be a complicated offense? Why all of the motion? Why all of the change in tempo? Why does Trent Edwards say "It just depends…"

Shouldn’t a young team be focusing on the basics of tackle football? Just like the previous OCs, I’m getting the opinion that Schonert wants to show "how smart he is." Granted, I like how he says he will tailor the offense to Edwards’ strengths. And I like his familiarity with the Bengals teams back in his day. But I just don’t like some of what they will do (or say they will do). Let me explain…

I think this is a little harsh, even considering how I have bagged Lynch (and rightfully so) for all that has gone on, and specifically, the way it has gone on.

But, to make the All-Turd team? Ouch. I really wish the Bills would call me - This kid needs some PR help.

Just a few Sunday musings…

Is it me, or does it seem that Schonert is installing a more complicated offense this year? Going on what I heard from the OTAs, it seemed like this offense has a lot of movement pre snap. Is that a wise thing to throw upon such a young team? Edwards is supposedly very intelligent, but still, he’s only a 2nd year QB. Am I crazy for having hoped the offense would be simple, yet more diverse?

Did it also seem like Reed, Roscoe, and Schoumann had pretty decent OTAs? How come I never really heard Fine’s name mentioned? Anybody have an idea of what Teyo is doing today? I think it’s safe to say his football career is over. I’m kind of surprised he didn’t even make it to camp.

Does Steve Johnson’s “involvement” in the Lynch affair have any effect on his chances to make the team? I thought I heard good things about him.

I forgot to mention I spoke with Robert Felton and Demetrius Bell. Both were extremely pleasant fellas. Felton was shorter than I thought he’d be (I’m six one and a half, and we were eye to eye), and I’m sorry to say, definitely needs a fitness program. Bell was/is every bit as tall as listed. He actually looked skinny. He needs a little bulk if you ask me.

How smart is it of Edwards to go work out with Evans and Royal between now and camp? If you ask me, that’s the mark of a real leader.

JP – thanks for your help. You represented the city of Buffalo very well. I am a little disappointed though that “Buffalo Lives” (www.buffalolives.org) was a one hit wonder. Even Falco had a longer fifteen minutes of fame for “Rock Me Amadeus.”

Which headline will we see first?

A. Peters extension worth 60 million over 6 years

B. Crowell re-ups for 30 million over 5 years

With all of the talk about Lynch and a “possible” suspension, how come there is no talk about Roscoe and his brush with the law? Does anyone have any knowledge about where that’s going?

Is anyone as surprised as I am that it seems like Williams was getting more 1st team reps than McCargo? If that’s the case, wouldn’t it make some sense for the Bills to be proactive in extending his deal?

How come I didn’t hear one word about Chris Ellis?

Youboty is not gonna make this team, is he? I think Blake Costanzo has a better chance of getting his jersey sold in the Bill’s Store than Ashton does…

In no order:

Because they didn’t address the center position through FA or the draft, does that mean that Duke Preston has made the team, as he is the only back-up there? I know they resigned Whittle, but he would have stayed here for bucket of wings and some extra blue cheese. Is Christian Gaddis the answer as backup center? I can’t imagine so...

And as far as guys who snap the ball, what about our long snapper? It might seem irrelevant to talk about this, but it does tie up a roster spot. Is Ryan Neil on this team again? He certainly isn’t making this team on pass rush skills.

I don’t think anyone ever mentioned this idea here before – if so, my bad for not acknowledging it – what about Dockery making the switch to center? I’m not saying I think it’s a good idea; I’m just saying…

Does anyone think Kirk Chambers is a viable backup tackle? I hope so. If not, wow, that spot is thin…

Is Fred Jackson really “guaranteed” a spot on this roster? Omon is the popular pick to unseat Wright, but is it possible he unseats Jackson too? I really like Fred Jackson, and I’m still holding out hope for Wright. I think this will be a great battle in training camp. My vote now says Omon gets the practice squad treatment.

If you ask me, that whole TE/FB/HB spot is a mess right now.

What would Steve Johnson have to do between now and September to win a roster spot? Please, no Reed bashing here.

Is Jason Jefferson worth giving a shot? I think he might be worth hanging on to. He’s a guy I could see surprising in camp this year, as a dark horse. I’m not saying he will, but I’m saying we might not want to write him off completely…

Why do they not have a run stuffer in development? It’s a shame not to have a 300+ pound DT constantly growing in your “farm system/practice squad.”

That sixth LB, whether it be Costanzo, Bowen, or whoever else, is all about STs, isn’t it?

The 4/5/6 CB spot should be a good race too. Who are the best STs of those three (James/Peterson, Youboty, or the rookie Corner)? I think “CB” play will determine the 4th spot. STs play will determine the difference between the 5th and 6th spot.

Anyone else think that Ko Simpson earned a vote of confidence from OBD? No FA signings or draft picks. Or, does that vote of confidence go to Wilson, or even Wendling?

How come no one has a Bills Special Teams Depth chart?

Why do the Bills practice jerseys look better than the real game day ones?

If anyone has the wherewithal to estimate rookie contracts, given the “slotting” that typically occurs, whereabouts do the Bills now stand salary cap wise going in to the 2008 season? I have absolutely no idea. I would only guess they have a good chunk left…

This post should have come sooner. But after the weekend, I think many of us were “Footballed Out.” So, with that being said…

I just wanted to thank Brian and the rest of you (even the ones I disagreed – actually, especially the ones I disagreed with) for a great time watching the draft “here” at BR. This was the first time I made it through almost the entirety of an NFL draft. Needless to say, I did enjoy it immensely.

Again, props to Brian for getting this site up and running; he’s got a classy site here. Also, nice work by the tech guys. I thought they were taking a chance launching a new platform just days before such a high traffic period. When there were some glitches on the days prior to the draft, I had some reservations about turning down some of the draft party invitations I received.

There are too many of you guys to acknowledge you individually. But if you responded to any of my banter, God bless ya’. I know what a meathead I can be some times, especially with regard to the Bills. Nevertheless, I really enjoyed the exchanges, and the wealth of knowledge you all shared.

P.S. – Now that the draft is over, what are we going to “argue” about next?

I'll admit, this draft didn't go the way I had hoped. But yet, I can't complain. It seems as though we really upgraded our secondary, and got the big WR that we all know we needed.

My question to you all - What happens tomorrow? With a high third, two fourths, and a fifth, we still have a chance to get a "player" or two.

There are some really good players out there. Who do you like, and more important, where?

Malcolm Kelly....Oklahoma WR Malcolm Kelly ran another disappointing forty time this morning...Kelly was timed at 4.65 in the forty on what is considered to be a very fast astro-turf type surface at Oklahoma...the New York Giants and the Green Bay Packers were the only teams to send representatives to see his workout.

I think this deserves it's own diary. I'd really like to see if all of the people who championed Kelly at #11 still think that way now...

And I'd especially like to hear Geronimo's comments on this.
