Summer League Practice
So, not much happening on the free agent front for the Clippers. The team is not jumping in terms of the big ones, but they seem to be testing the waters for some 'lesser' players, like Miller. I'm not criticizing ownership for that because the contract numbers being thrown around are just nuts. But, I am questioning the logic of waiting to hire a coach. My understanding is that Kim Hughes' contract ended June 30, and I imagine all the other assistant coaches contracts expired then too. So, for those of us eager to watch the young guys in Vegas (starting next weekend!), to see what the future holds for us, who is preparing these kids for the games? Shouldn't the Clippers spend some time and energy fostering the guys that will be the future of the franchise? What's going on in the front office? Is anyone paying attention?
David Geffen Parade?
THIS is a reason to have a parade! Certainly, it's just another Clipper fantasy, but wouldn't it be great? Perhaps if Sterling ran the numbers he would realize giving up control could make him A LOT of money, and God knows how much he likes that. Geffen buys team, LBJ signs. Season ticket sales quadruple. LBJ jerseys will fly off the shelf. The Clippers will be on national TV every other week. Sterling won't have to give parties for himself anymore; his dubious 'charitable' events can end, think how much money he'd save just on those stupid LA Times ads.
David Geffen, I love you. Will it help if fans give YOU a parade? I am sure the turnout will be much better this time. Hell, if Sterling sells, the fans will give HIM a parade too, I don't even care if LBJ comes as a result of a sale.
Number 1 Reason LeBron Will Not Be a Clipper
Donald Sterling. I don't care how much Clipper fans dream, LeBron will not hitch his star to Sterling's name; the cost to his goodwill would be insurmountable. Perhaps one of the other free agents who do not have such a strong presence, strong brand name for himself will make the sacrifice for the money. But we have to face the fact we support a team owned by one of the worst owners in professional sports.
Clippers vs Warriors II Section 5
If you were a new Clipper fan watching the first half, you'd think, "How did the Clips let Maggette leave?" Corey was scorching hot - score, score score! But then, foul, foul foul, whine and sit down. He wasn't alone, Ellis, Curry and the hot shot kid that looks like Darius Miles from afar (if only Darius shot like that) buried the Clips in the first half.
Second half started better, LA seemed to pull together on D, but there were still retro Cliippers offensive moves that could give deja vu a bad rap; run up court, shoot a quick, bad shot leaving them vulnerable to fast break by Warriors.
I know its preseason. I won't name names, but these are the same guys who did the same thing last year and pledged that was in the past. I found myself muttering, "same old Clippers". But then, SOMEONE lit a fire. They rediscovered defense, they started recognizing screens, making sharp passes and hitting shots. Maybe there is hope...
