I just saw this on the Sactown Royalty Blog (post: Tuesday Footnotes)

"I don't have a subscription to Sports Business Daily, but I've been told Sactown Royalty came in at #5 on this list of the Top 10 NBA Blogs. Fellow SportsBlogs Nation sites Blazers Edge, Bullets Forever and (of course) Golden State of Mind make the cut, too."

A proposal for a Greg Oden nickname

I realize that I've already weighed in on this issue (my previous opinion was that Greg's nickname should come from Mo Lucas). But it just struck me that there is a beautiful synergy here: Greg has been given Williams' jersey number so we, THE FANS, should give him the name "Buck". That is a real nickname, one that isn't made up by marketers but instead fits the man like a glove. "Buck" has authenticity and links our guy Oden back to our old school warrior.

Other than that, "Treebeard" is very cool.

I'm calling him Buck Oden. Edit: And how did I forget the fact that our guy is from THE Ohio State University BUCKeyes? Beautiful? Yeah, I think so.

Face of the Blazers

But none of these men are the face of the franchise in the way that Oden, or even Durant, would be. None of them have the ability to make you forget the past simply by showing up. None of them transcend basketball in the manner that only a game-breaking, first-rate franchise star can do."

How true is his statement that "none of these men are the face of the franchise"?

To me, the face of the franchise is Roy. He proved himself to be the leader of this young team last year, and it is his attitude that I want stamped into the persona of our Portland Trailblazers. Oden will be the national media's focal point for the near future, but at crunch time Roy will be the Man.

2006 draft class vs 2007 draft class

Here's a hypothetical exercise, but first a little background: At the 2006 NCAA tourney, Washington vs UCONN game, Brandon Roy became my choice for our draft pick. And to me, he will still be THE MAN on the Blazers even with Oden or Durant (or Aldridge).

That said, if he were being drafted in the 2007 draft (based on the 2006 draft scouting/buzz), I would project him to be available at the 14th to 18th spot this year.

Using the same assumptions, I'd guess that Aldridge would be jostling for position with Branden Wright and Al Horford (3rd to 6th this year)and Sergio could be anywhere between 28 and 40.

And how about other 2006 rooks? Bargnani? Thomas? Morrison? Gay?

And what about Jack, Martell, Outlaw? I'm thinking all three would be second rounders this year.

Which brings me to the secondary point of this diary: the four second round Blazer picks in this draft are more likely to produce good players than in future second rounds.

So, if you can remember back to last year's draft buzz about our young players throw a guess out as to where they would be picked this year. And what 2007 second round players might be better than Jack, Outlaw and Martell.

A year ago, many of us didn't know where this franchise was headed. Here is a list of ten days that have been big in restoking the flames of Blazer-love in me:

April 14 - Portland beats the tanking Sonics 108 to 102.
May 2 - Brandon is R.O.Y.
Paul Allen buys the Rose Garden back.
Nov 10 - Portland stages 31 point comeback to beat Hornets.
Ime is given a contract.
Feb 11 - Agent Zero held to 9 points by visiting Portland, loses 73 to 94.
Kevin Pritchard is named GM.
Nov 4 - the "Roach" game.
May 22, 2007 - lottery yields #1 pick in 2007 draft.
