ink-stained wretch seeks advice
Here's what might be a really tired question for the long-time baseball fanatics that frequent this blog, but since I'm a recent convert to the Church of Baseball, it's a sincere one. What are your two or three favorite books about baseball? I've recently read Halberstam's Summer of '49 and Sandy Tolan's Me and Hank. Both are worth reading. So I am hoping for suggestions (and possibly a lively discussion).
Cubs Fans at Miller Park
Sports Illustrated’s newest MLB Power Rankings have the Crew in 5th place, up from 6th last week. This seems a bit high to me, given the implosions by Parra and Looper this week, but it was the accompanying comment by Ted Keith that caught my eye:
Warning to fans at Miller Park: You are being watched. By everybody around you. A new program allows fans to turn each other in to ballpark authorities at Miller Field via texting as part of a new club initiative. The program, called "Play Nice: Be A Friendly Fan" is meant to allow fans to "discreetly alert stadium personnel due to any fan behavior issues." I have a feeling this will come in very handy whenever the Cubs are in town (although, if you tossed Cubs fans out of Miller Park, the place would be half-empty).
Now, I’m not (like many of my friends in Minnesota) constantly on alert for media "disrespect" for my team or my home state; such a mind-set suggests an inferiority complex. But that last parenthetical comment is just silly. The Brewers are 9th in MLB in attendance, while the Cubs are 7th. The difference per home game is 2,140, which, incidentally, appears to me to be the average turnout at Florida Marlins home games. I suspect that savvy Brewers season-ticket holders are merely subsidizing the cost of their ticket packages by selling these tickets to overpaid, underworked Cubs fans.
