I should say up front that I'm an American. That's important, because I really don't understand how the Premier League is broadcast in the UK. I watch Soccer AM and the lunchtime fixture (at 4:45am local time!) occasionally via illegal feeds on the internet and at one time I had a service called ITVN which brought Setanta North America into my home. Beyond that, I'm not sure what the relationship is between the PL, Sky, Setanta, BBC and other British media outlets is. Here in the United States, the PL is broadcast on Fox Soccer Channel, which is owned by NewsCorp, who owns Sky Sports. FSC has their own shows that generally have Americans or Canadians, but also a few Brits that reside either in Los Angeles or Winnepeg (Fox Sports World in Canada). The games themselves come from either Setanta UK or Sky Sports and feature the same commentators as the UK.

Setanta Sports is having a crisis.

They are broke and now questions are being raised as to if the channel will even be around come August. This morning, the Premier League gave Setanta until Friday to pay their fees for the 2009-2010 season or the league will sell off those games, presumably to Sky and ESPN. The significance of this cannot be overstated, as ESPN is putting in a bid to gain the North American TV rights in December for the next 3 seasons, after losing out to Fox Soccer Channel.

Let's take a look at a few scenarios:

Rumors have been circulating the internet that ESPN is going to turn it's Classic network into an all-soccer format. They already cover MLS, the World Cup, Euro 2008/2012, the U.S. Men's National Team, NCAA, as well as the Eredivisie on ESPN Deportes. Should they gain even partial rights via Setanta, that would give them a pretty strong program lineup should they decide to start their soccer network . Also, there is a possiblity that if Setanta goes completely belly-up, they could gain the rights to the SPL, French league and Setanta's Champion's League matches. I'm not sure how that would work if they had Champion's League games via Setanta with FSC holding the rights, but that could be very interesting.

Fox Soccer has the broadcast rights to the Premier League, Serie A, some England games, MLS, USL, NCAA and now Champion's League, as well as Europa Cup. Should Sky get partial rights to the Setanta Premier League games, I don't know if Fox will show more Premier League or not. Having not done any research, I would guess that about half the matchups between the "Big 4" were shown on FSC, with the other half on Setanta. Could we see all of those matchups should ESPN and FSC get Setanta's rights? The weekends are already congested with FSC's coverage of the PL and Serie A, and really only one more time slot is available for a live game...the 12:45 kickoff...which they used to show, but haven't for the last 2 seasons. The rest would have to be tape delayed.

Of course, there is not guarantee of FSC showing more soccer just because Sky buys some of Setanta's rights. It's important to know that Setanta in North America and Setanta in the UK were not exactly the same. Some of the games on Sky were on Setanta in North America, and some of the games on FSC in North America were on Setanta in the UK.

Either way, no matter what happens...how awesome would it be to see 8 or 9 Premier League games either live or tape delayed, per "week" on ESPN and Fox Soccer? Instead of watching Wigan and Hull City on FSC you could watch Liverpool and Manchester City on ESPN.

Okay, this is off topic, but he does live in Columbia, and his wife's sister's husband is Bill Laurie who donated a chunk of money for the arena. I'm just curious if anyone cares, or if anyone wishes he'd invest money into Mizzou like Bill does, or what? Obviously, his son, Josh, played basketball for Mizzou and his other son plays for <strike>Southwest</strike> Missouri State.

Frankly, it annoys me on a couple of levels. I wish he'd invest some money into Mizzou, I wish he'd invest his money into US Soccer, and (as a fan of English football) I wish Americans would stay the hell out of England.
