Saving the soul of SoDo?
Crosscut.com: The Port of Seattle is worried the new arena will kill off working class Seattle, but the Port's leaders have also been a huge force for the gentrification they're decrying.

Joe Girardi denigrates M's and Michael Pineda simultaneously, is a dick
Pineda will remain with the team for the series against the Rays, and then return to Tampa for extended spring training when the Yankees leave for next week's series in Baltimore.
"I think it can help because he can observe what goes on here in the next three days, to see what’s it like to be a Yankee,'' Girardi said. "Spring training was obviously different for him than what he was accustomed to and in the season it picks up a little more.''
Mariners Trying to Kill NBA/NHL Arena in SoDo
There have been rumblings about the M's opposing an arena since Chris Hansen's plan came to light. Today in a letter to city and county officials, they made it official: the Mariners do not want an NBA/NHL arena for a neighbor.
The proposed SODO location, in our view, simply does not work.
We strongly support the return of the NBA to the Seattle area. But we have strong reservations about the SODO site for an arena.
On the face of it, their position is understandable. A new arena south of the Safeco garage would present a number of logistical challenges. But they are playing with fire by going public with their opposition.
Many will question the motivation of a losing team in keeping discretionary-dollar competition out of the neighborhood. Or the hypocrisy of hosting a Sonics Celebration Night at Safeco Field, then deliberately undermining Seattle's best chance to reclaim that glory. Or the irony of opposing a new arena in a location specifically zoned for one, while their own financial success has been the direct result of a massive public subsidy in that very stadium district.
It has been hard enough for Mariner fans to stay committed through years of futility. The team doesn't need to make it even harder. People who desperately want the Sonics back will be disinclined to keep giving money to a perpetual loser if they continue on this path.

Proof that the Angels have been annoying for a very long time. Fred Lynn, what a pretty boy. Don Baylor got HBP twice during this photo shoot. He wants to bonk the back of Reggie Jackson's head with that 41 oz bat. Reggie's ego is bigger than Eurasia. Nice goggles man. Rod Carew's afro resents being smooshed by a ridiculous headband. This did not stop Rod from gettng mad hits. He did get bonked in the head by Reggie's bat when the shoot was over, as Reggie was unaware that people were standing next to him.

The Mariners prefer to call them "Northwest Green" caps, but those hats are indeed making a comeback to go with the Northwest Green alternate jerseys that were worn on Monday and Friday home games last season.

Divisional Playoffs: Packers at Falcons Game Thread
I've watched The Run over and over again. Online, on ESPN, NFL Network's re-air, NFLN's studio shows and Inside the NFL, the key segment of which I rewound repeatedly just to watch the reaction of players and fans in the background. When Beast Mode scores and the screaming hits an even higher crescendo, every single time, I get chills. Not just a little rush, but goosebump-raising chills. The Run is so, so sick. It is beautiful.
Thank you, Marshawn, for being such a badass. You have given us this dream.
#6 Green Bay Packers at #1 Atlanta Falcons, 5:00 PM Pacific, FOX. Line: Atlanta -1.5/-1. Over/under: 43.5. Referee: John Parry.
Joe Buck and Troy Aikman in the booth from a raucous and antiquated Georgia Dome. A road win by the sixth-seeded Pack keeps a home title game scenario in play for the 206. Green Bay is scary but we really don't want Atlanta. Careful what you wish for because you might just get it.

Divisional Playoffs: Ravens at Steelers Game Thread
There is nothing quite like watching playoff football with your team still alive. The NFL has been reduced to eight franchises and our beloved Seattle Seahawks are one of them. The rest of the league watches this fantastic slate of games from home, wistfully hoping to get so far in the future. Their teams have ceased to exist. The Super Bowl is two wins away.
#5 Baltimore Ravens at #2 Pittsburgh Steelers, 1:30 PM Pacific, CBS. Line: Steelers -3. Over/under: 37. Referee: Jeff Triplette.
Greg Gumbel and Dan Dierdorf from a wintry Heinz Field for this authentic grudge match. There are reasons to not like the Ravens, I guess, but Christalmighty I hate Pittsburgh so much. Ray Ray, go stomp the fuck out of that goddamn rapist. Or: XL rematch? Shh. Don't speak its name.

77 Dave Niehaus Avenue South
On the sudden passing of Dave Niehaus yesterday, many of us wished the ballpark could be renamed Dave Niehaus Field. Not legally possible, short of a breach of contract, but some suggested a co-naming along the lines of Safeco Field at Dave Niehaus Grounds.
That would be nice tribute. But it isn't nearly enough. The City of Seattle needs to rename the 1100 and 1200 blocks of 1st Avenue South as Dave Niehaus Avenue South.

For SoCal LLers: M's-Padres with Hamilton's Tavern
Sunday, June 13. Kind of a long way out to plan, but not really, it's the M's in San Diego! This event is a blast and will sell out quickly. Ain't no better Craft Beer and Baseball combination for your hard-earned discretionary dollar.

DO IT. Please. We will love you for it.

USA vs. Canada Gold Medal Match Open Thread
By virtue of an unbeaten tournament record the U.S. is the designated home team in today's Olympic Hockey match, giving them the option to wear their circa-1960 throwback uniforms. That is where the advantage ends for the American side. This battle will be waged deep in funny-accented enemy territory. Our intrepid wanderers Matthew and Jeff are presumably experiencing their own drunken Miracle on Ice and are compelled to provide a full report whence they return from the not-so-frozen North.
United States vs. Canada, 12:15 PM Pacific, NBC. Line: Canada -1. Over/under: 5½.
All-time Gold Medal match records: Canada 7-4, USA 2-7. Head-to-Head in Gold Medal matches: Canada 5-1.
Last Olympic Hockey Gold Medal: Canada 2002 (Salt Lake City), USA 1980 (Lake Placid).
The U.S. has clinched the overall medal count victory in these Olympics, while Canada has won the most gold medals. The host country's claim to "Own the Podium" will ring hollow for Canucks and Québécois alike if the Americans beat them out of hockey gold on their own ice. This is for all the Vancouver 2010 marbles.
My contribution may at some point be reduced to all-caps incoherence and/or spilling beer on the keyboard.
USA vs. Canada Olympic Hockey Open Thread
Hockey! Olympics! Historic rivalry!! Fierce battle in the frozen North!!! Best of all the game is LIVE on the West Coast, finally. But not in HD (*in my area, at least) because NBC has to fuck it up somehow.
USA vs. Canada, 4:45 PM Pacific, MSNBC. Line: Canada -1½. Over/under: 5½. All-Time USA vs. Canada: 2-10-3.
At stake: first place in Group A and bye into the quarterfinals. SBN Preview.
