It took big helpings of injuries and fail, but Adams has finally made the roster and Putz is gone.

Those who have been longing to see safety Jamar Adams on the 53-man roster have gotten their wish. Adams was signed from the practice squad and tight end Jeb Putzier was released to clear a spot.

With backup C.J. Wallace out with a hamstring injury and Jordan Babineaux already playing a role as the fourth cornerback in the dime package, the club was down to starter Deon Grant and Brian Russell at safety.

That's 2 UFAs and 6 of 7 draft picks on the roster from the 2008 draft. Yes, Coutu counts.

Keary Colbert Released

The Seahawks liked what they saw from Keary Colbert in practice in the days after they acquired him from the Broncos in September. There wasn't much to like from him during games, however, and that's apparently why Seattle released him Tuesday.

Colbert dropped what should have been a routine 19-yard completion on a critical third-and-12 play against the Dolphins in Week 10. The Seahawks expect Deion Branch to return this week. Releasing Colbert appears to be a direct response to his struggles. Seattle remains relatively thin at the position. The depth doesn't improve without Colbert.

So, for an undisclosed late-round pick (Editor: 5th)(was it conditional? Ed: Yes) , we got 7 catches, 52 yards and 1 TD reception. Ew. Can't much blame Ruskell though. With all the injuries he had to pull the trigger on something. Dude looked the part but just couldn't squeeze the rock.

John Morgan (Edit): Is this a waste of resources, yes, but I think something else must be said. Seattle is destined for a top fifteen pick. Unless things change quickly, a top ten. Tim Ruskell will trade down. He's an aggressive GM who makes a lot of moves. He clearly prescribes to a talent acquisition by volume approach and it's one I agree with. Ruskell, Mike Holmgran and staff must have seen something about Colbert that interested them. The pick used to acquire Colbert was a small bet with possibly good returns. Now the team moves on.

I don't like this move, it seems rash, but consider the likelihood of a 5th round wide receiver sticking. Despite his name value, and the abnormal in season nature of the move, the result isn't much more than a fifth round bust. Seattle has made many moves to get this receiving corps. Should Taylor stick and contribute, it will still be one of the least expensive group of wide receivers in the NFL. If Koren can build on his gains, Branch play like we know he can, and Taylor play like a pro, it won't be half bad. This is clearly Ruskell's philosophy on acquiring wide receiver talent, construction through volume and attrition. Now, the question left unaswered: Is it worth a damn?

The 5th round pick for Colbert is gone. We don’t get the pick back by keeping Keary around. We want to get Branch out on the field so someone has to be cut. Cutting Kent instead of Keary doesn’t miraculously net us a 5th round pick. It’s just like poker, the bets in the previous round are over with. We have to cut the worst player / least upside … and I have no reason to believe that is not what we did.

You have to isolate the 2 moves:

1) trading for Keary
2) cutting him

It is smart management to NOT favor Keary just because we invested a lot in him… You have to evaluate the trade based on the situation at the trade, and this move based on the situation NOW.

Lets face it, Keary is younger than say, Engram, but is already in his fifth season, and hasn’t had a decent year since his rookie season. I would much rather have Kent around than Colbert. I agree with the comment above that we needed an experienced, but not over the hill, player immediately at the time we picked up Colbert, a time when we were still thinking playoffs…

There may also be a clause that we would lose another pick or a higher pick if Keary stayed on the roster past a certain date, or played X number of snaps… I don’t know.

It’s too early to determine whether we should trade down. As pointed out, it isn’t always the best thing to do. We have to consider what our needs are and who is out there as the draft gets closer. As of right now I think a true WR threat is our biggest need. We are too easy to single cover and don’t have RAC threat. Crabtree is unbelievable. What he has done this year despite being the focus of the other teams’ defense every week is simply godlike. He might fall a drop by not having a 4.3-40 come combine time but he is just such a good football player..

Justin Forsett back on the Seahawks 53-man

The Seahawks did not make a trade by the NFL deadline today, but they did sign rookie running back Justin Forsett off the practice squad.

To clear a spot on the 53-man roster, rookie wide receiver Micheal Bumpus was released. It's likely he'll end up back on the practice squad if he clears waivers.

When the Indianapolis Colts released rookie running back Justin Forsett on Tuesday, the transaction came with a tagline: They planned to re-sign him next week.

Rather than wait around, however, Forsett decided to come "home." When the Seahawks called with an offer to join their practice squad, he jumped at it.

"I always thought this was my home, wanted to be here, so I'm just glad to have this chance to be back," Forsett said Thursday after his first practice in his second stint with the Seahawks. "I always wanted to be here. I never wanted to leave in the first place."

Seneca Wallace Gets Full Reps at Receiver Today

He looked crisp running routes and caught the ball with confidence. But mostly Seneca Wallace looked like he belonged in his first full practice at wide receiver.

Because of Seattle's injuries to its top four wide outs, back-up quarterback Seneca Wallace worked out with the receivers and it appears he will see considerable time at the position, and perhaps start on Sunday.

Not the circumstances under which many of us wanted to see Seneca get involved, obviously. Farnsworth reports that Billy McMullen and Samie Parker were already practicing as well.

So, I guess we see Taylor and Wallace as starting WR this week?

I think we might be. For a team that considered itself a Super Bowl contender, the Seahawks are looking very much like a squad that will be fortunate to get to 9-7. I was lucky to be busy with network duties in San Diego and didn't see any of this debacle.

What happens now?

Bernard and "Big Play Only" Babs are back today, so at least two moves must be made. One will be Burleson to IR, the other Cuoto to waiver/PS. But, they need to add at least one veteran receiver. Joe Horn, possibly. Not exactly a Ruskell guy, but would seem to be the best talent avaiable. Who goes then? Babin? Please not Forsett. Someone good has to get cut so they can carry the rehabbing Branch and Engram on the 53.

Say goodbye to the Super Bowl, Hawk fans. We had our chance in XL and it looks like that was it for some time. A playoff appearance would be quite an achievement out of this team. Personally, I'm looking forward to Mora the Younger. I like Holmgren a lot but it's time to get some youth and energy behind these guys.

Now BEAT THE 9ers!!! Please.

On a personal note, I talked to Eugene Robinson on Sunday. He does color for the Carolina Panthers radio broadcasts. #41 was stoked to hear from an old Seahawks fan that remembered when he was patrolling the defensive backfield in the Kingdome. Really nice guy, and looks like he could run out there right now.

Week 3 of the preseason will also be the Seahawks only appearance on Monday Night Football. Nice respect for a 2nd-round playoff team defending its fourth straight division title.

Defense gets a couple of takeaways on Trent Edwards, Julius Jones comes out with a chip on his shoulder and goes for 100+. Seahawks. 1-0.

Hawk Nation will be in full throat for this one, and the Hawks will be on three extra days of rest, but a W against these guys will be a tall order. Preview of SB XLIII? Or just China Bowl 2009... This could be a meaningless game if Seattle has clinched their playoff position, but if the Hawks play their starters, they won't lose to Zona. It will almost certainly be meaningless to the Cards. Fucking Cardinals, I hate you. Seahawks. 12-4.

12-4 looks doable if: the offensive line comes together, Julius Jones runs downhill and hits holes like Shaun wouldn't, if Deion Branch comes back and produces, and if the team stays relatively healthy across the board. A win at Tampa Bay is probably my shakiest pick, so call 11-5 the floor, with 13-3 the ceiling if they win at St. Louis. It's an interesting schedule overall, with a lot of entertaining matchups on paper, and aside from the early bye week, some favorable timing for the Hawks.

Do it for Coach, fellas. GO SEAHAWKS!!

After being part of the city for 41 years, the Sonics are being stolen away for dubious reasons while every NBA owner and executive allows it to happen, including David Stern, the guy who's supposed to be policing this stuff. I think it's reprehensible to watch someone hijack a franchise away from the people who cared about the team and loved it and nurtured it through the years. It belittles not just the good people of Seattle, but everyone who loves sports and believes it provides a unique and valuable connection for a city, a community, family members and friends.

Pretty Fucking Impressed With the Hawks' Draft

I'm not a draft expert and don't play one on the internets, but I am Pretty Fucking Impressed with Ruskell and Co's draft. With their picks in Rounds 1, 2, 4, 5, and 6, they appear to have drafted guys who, at the very least, are all excellent shots to make the roster. Not bad for a 4-time defending division champion sitting near the bottom of most rounds.

1st. Lawrence Fucking Jackson, DE

Probably doesn't knock out Tapp for a starting spot, but that hardly matters since they envision a 7-8 man rotation on the line. Maybe Ruskell and Holmgren held out to see if RB Mendenhall fell to them. He didn't, so Seattle shrewdly traded down and still got their man. Other teams probably slept on him at that spot since DE wasn't a "need" for the Hawks. Well done.

2nd. John Fucking Carlson, TE

Moves right to the top of the depth chart. Ruskell and Holmgren were willing to trade away their pick in the 3rd round, a round they covet, so they think highly of this guy. If he turns into the TE they've been looking for all these years we can thank King Salmonella, or he might not have fallen to 38.

4th. Joseph "Red" Fucking Bryant, DT

Massive run-stuffer comes in and immediately competes for a starting spot, with Tubbs a perennial injury concern and Rocky acting like Jake LaMotta. Was at Jacob Green's house when he got drafted...that's got to be good juju.

5th. Owen Fucking Mask-Buster Schmitt, FB

This pick was from the Cowboys for trading back in the 1st round, so if you still want to whine about trading the 3rd rounder to get Carlson, this is your answer. My first reaction was, "FB? wtf." But if this guy turns out to be the smash-mouth pure fullback badass everyone's making him out to be, then it will be another Ruskell mid-round steal. Immediate speculation was that he might displace Weaver but I think that's very premature. Either way, he seems destined for no worse than backup FB, and that's pretty damn good for moving back 3 spots and still getting your guy in the first round.

6th. Tyler Fucking Schmitt, LS!?!

Go Aztecs!! Like fellow Montezuma Mesa alum Kevin O’Connell, had everyone saying, "Who?" when his name was announced. Even the indefatigable Mike Mayock couldn't recall if a long snapper had ever been drafted before. Say what you want about possibly being available in the 7th round, but they wanted the guy and pulled the trigger. If he pans out they've added a ST starter and young battery-mate to go with Plack and Olindo Mare/Cuotu. A welcome end to the revolving LS door since the injury to J.P. Darche.

7th. Justin Fucking Forsett? RB

Who the fuck knows? A longshot to make the roster, but it's speculated that the team will move Mo Mo out since his role is filled by Julius Jones. If so, maybe the scat-back Forsett makes the team as a KR/ST guy.

edit: This strikes me as the only throwaway of the draft. Maybe it's kind of a Darren Sproles pick and they see him returning kickoffs, as Morris has proven to be no threat as a KR. I'm still not convinced Morris has been deemed expendable so I'd be surprised to see this guy make anything but the practice squad. Was there really no O-lineman or linebacker they liked here?

7th. Brandon What-the-Fucking Coutu, K

These Bulldog coeds thoroughly enjoyed Mr. Cuoto's kickoffs and PATS, so... hmm. Will have to beat out Olindo Mare. The team really must not have thought much of the remaining available O-lineman or Linebackers. Look for a couple of undrafted FA's to actually compete for spots at those positions in training camp. People will slam the last two picks, fairly so, EXCEPT if the kicker ends up being a stud, in which case this class would be very good indeed. I'll be rooting for the kid to beat out the old man but doubt it.

Thomas played first base during the early part of his career and was not known for his defense. He never won a Gold Glove at the position, and has played primarily as a designated hitter since turning 30 years old. Rather, Thomas is known for his offensive performance; some regard him as one of the best pure hitters in baseball's history. Thomas is the only player in major league history to have seven consecutive seasons of a .300 average, and at least 100 walks, 100 runs, 100 runs batted in, and 20 home runs (from 1991 to 1997). The only other player to have more than five consecutive seasons accomplishing this feat was Ted Williams with six. This accomplishment is even more remarkable considering that despite playing only 113 games in 1994, due to the labor stoppage which curtailed that season prematurely, he still was able to attain these lofty numbers, thereby keeping the streak alive. Additionally, there are only five players in history who have both hit more home runs and have a higher career batting average than Thomas (Hank Aaron, Jimmie Foxx, Mel Ott, Babe Ruth, and Ted Williams).

Does Frank Thomas strike out a lot? Is Thomas an asshole in the clubhouse? Yes, and maybe. Never met the guy. But I do know that Barry Bonds was an asshole, is an asshole and will be an asshole.
