To say Gonzaga plays like a power conference team ...
... is an insult. There are plenty of programs in power conferences that have no business being mentioned in the same sentence as Gonzaga.
After the WV win yesterday, plenty of analysts immediately wanted to give Mark Few and the Gonzaga program credit by saying that they either don't play like a mid major or that they play like they're from a major conference.
No. Gonzaga is a top 20 program and only about 20 teams from the power conferences can say that.
What's gone wrong: Gonzaga always has the best talent in the WCC by a wide margin, but this whole does not equal the sum of the parts. Forward Elias Harris was a freshman sensation but a sophomore question mark. Guard Steven Gray is averaging a career-high 14.9 points per game but shooting a career-low 44 percent from the field. Center Robert Sacre has improved his all-around numbers but still leaves you wanting more. And point guard has been an ongoing issue.
ESPN's Pat Forde has Gonzaga as one of the busts of the year.
The sorry state of the WCC
So while most Zags fans have been worrying about Elias' health and the Bulldogs' overall underwhelming performances against San Diego State and Kansas State, I have been quietly worrying about the WCC's turn for the worse.
Last season, the WCC managed a 6-6 record against the Pac-10, which is entirely respectable, even if the Pac-10 was having an off year. So far this year, the WCC is 0-4 against the Pac-10 and that's not even the half of it. Check out these doozies...
Three WCC vs. Pac 10 games tonight
USD at Stanford, Santa Clara at USC, and Pepperdine at UCLA. Don't let us down! Gotta get crackin' on the conference RPI early. St. Mary's also takes on St. John's as part of ESPN's Tip-Off Marathon.
Steven Gray running the point
Last season, Coach Few showed a willingness to experiment with Steven at the point guard position. In another thread, I expressed my desire to see Steven playing point again sometime this season. Zach B thinks this is a bad idea: Steven's ball handling skills are not suited for the point guard position and he could be vulnerable against quick teams that run a full court press.
I'm curious to see what others think. Am I alone in wanting to see Steven play some point again this year?
Another solid game from KO!
Kelly Olynyk led the Canadian team in scoring with 14 points and pulled down 4 boards in a 89-67 loss to Spain. Despite Canada's poor performance in FIBA, KO's play has been a real bright spot for Zag fans. Sacre pitched in with 8 points and 3 rebounds.
Nice game from KO in FIBA WC
Kelly Olynyk scored 13 points on 4/5 from the field and pulled a couple key rebounds down the stretch for the Canadian national team, who almost pulled out the upset over the undefeated French team. The final score was 68-63. Canada's next game is tomorrow against New Zealand.
Elias Harris vs. Argentina
In more interesting news (Kyle who?), Germany dropped their opening game in the FIBA World Basketball Championship to Argentina 78-74, though, in the end, the game was probably a lot closer than expected. Elias came off the bench playing 18 mins., scoring 6 pts., getting 1 board, dishing 2 assists, and blocking a shot. Germany's next game is tomorrow against Serbia.
Austin Daye is currently in the middle of his second stint in the Las Vegas Summer League, and the one thing you notice about his play is that he just looks comfortable.
How about 'em Huskies?
This is becoming way too easy.
Heytvelt update
Seems like Josh Heytvelt is settling in nicely with his new team Oyak Renault in the Turkish Basketball League. So far, he has led his team, now 1-1, in scoring and rebounding, averaging 20 points, 9.5 boards, and 2.5 dishes. Their next game is this Sunday against Tofas, who are also 1-1.
Stockton's Basketball Hall of Fame enshrinement speech
Yesterday, Gonzaga legend John Stockton took his rightful place among the basketball greats in the Basketball Hall of Fame. I thought his was a pretty good speech with Gonzaga getting quite a bit of play. Highlights from Stockton's career can be seen here.
Morrison playing well in Summer League
Nice interview with Chucky Brown and Adam Morrison about Adam's play so far this summer.
