Thome Delivers Thanks to Twins Employees

3

MINNEAPOLIS -- Jim Thome is no longer with the Twins, but the celebrated slugger still wanted to show his appreciation to the organization with a special gesture on Tuesday. Thome, who was traded to the Indians late in the season and is now with the Phillies, expressed his gratitude toward the organization via a conference call during an all-staff meeting at Target Field. And he kept an old tradition alive, as he sent every member of the front office, including scouts, Minor League staff and grounds crew a personalized autographed copy of a photo from when he hit his 600th home run on Aug. 15. He did the same with the White Sox when he hit No. 500 in 2007. "It's a pretty special keepsake," Twins president Dave St. Peter said. "And it's just another example of the class act that Thome is." -Rhett Bollinger minnesota.twins.mlb.com/

Kevin Slowey, a "Player to be Thankful For"

1

"Of all major-league pitchers who threw at least 50 innings in 2011, Slowey gave up the fewest walks -- just five -- and ended the season with the lowest walk rate at 1.9 percent. Slowey also had zero wins and a 6.67 ERA. That's a pretty special combination." -Wendy Thurm SB Baseball Nation

Twins Shift Search for Closer in new Direction

25

General manager Terry Ryan said on Tuesday the Twins are "probably going to be looking outside" the organization to fill their closer role, as left-hander Glen Perkins is expected to remain in his current role as the club's top setup man. "We're going to look via free agency or through trade," Ryan said. "There are quite a few good closers out there." By Rhett Bollinger / MLB.com

La Russa Gives "Moneyball" Two Thumbs Down

"I was offended because of what the book represented ... I knew a few of those guys as scouts. It strains the credibility a little bit. They won 20 in a row, qualify for the playoffs, go two up on the Yankees, and there wasn't anything in the movie except a brief [mention] about Miguel [Tejada] and Eric [Chavez], the three starters and [closer] Billy Koch. It was about a couple of trades and turning Scott [Hatteberg] into a first baseman. That club was carried by those guys that were signed and developed the old-fashioned way ... It's a nice story, but it isn't accurate enough." From Big League Stew

Former Twins GM Andy MacPhail steps down as O's PBO

+

"After more than a week of speculation since the end of the season, Andy MacPhail is indeed stepping down as the Orioles' president of baseball operations after four-plus years at the helm, according to a club source. MacPhail is leaving the Orioles to tend to family and personal obligations, the source said." From The Baltimore Sun

"I call it a Gardy Day."

76

Twins manager Ron Gardenhire benched third baseman Danny Valencia on Sunday. Asked if it was a "Danny Day," meaning a chance for Valencia to get a breather, the manager said, "I call it a Gardy Day." Gardenhire said this tongue-in-cheek, during his pregame media session, but insiders say the team's dissatisfaction with Valencia is growing. From Joe C at The Strib

Morneau takes Problem-free Batting Practice

3

"He had a really good day on the field with BP and ground balls and the whole package," Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said. "Everything went good." Morneau is expected to do the same on Thursday, before taking early batting practice with his teammates upon their return to Minneapolis on Friday for their game against the White Sox. Gardenhire said Morneau will then be re-evaluated over the weekend to see if he'll head to Fort Myers, Fla., for simulated games or to Triple-A Rochester.
