The UConn Blog Kemba Walker gets his First NBA Triple-Double

Kemba completed his first triple double of his young NBA career on the 28th for the Charlotte Bobcats. He scored 20 points, dished 11 assists, and pulled down 10 rebounds.

He's going to get some more starts too, as starting point guard DJ Augustin is out for at least four games with an injury to his toe, so Kemba's going to be the starter.

I'm now going to write words so that I can post this article. Words words words.

The UConn Blog A Quick Look At the Matchup with Arizona

Here's the kenpom breakdown:

Jm0ioy_medium

Some quick thoughts: Arizona's defense, though superbly effective at stopping the three, is not very good inside the arc; since UConn is 248th in percentage of points from behind the arc, that shouldn't be much of a problem.

Arizona almost never forces turnovers, and UConn almost never turns it over, so don't look for that to change.

Arizona gives up a decent number of free throws, so UConn will want to try and take advantage of that, especially if they can manage to get the exceptionally studly Derrick Williams into foul trouble.

The UConn Blog Heresy: UConn should play some zone D

San Diego State has lost to exactly one team this year: pre-Davies-suspension Brigham Young. As you can probably guess from the title, they were playing zone defense most of the time.

San Diego State's outside shooting is so bad that it's downright Husky-like. They're actually a bit better, and they have one actually good three-point shooter in Chase Tapley, but overall they make only 34% of their threes compared to UConn's 33%.

The zone would make it easier to double down on Kawhi Leonard inside, limit his penetration, and encourage him to take some threes. As he's just 24 out of 82 on the season from behind the arc, every shot we can get him to take from out there is a bonus for us.

I'm not saying we need to (or could) turn into Syracuse, but I hope that Calhoun will at least throw it in the mix and see if it works.

Many of us here mocked Cornell's coach for refusing to zone the Huskies; will the Huskies make the same mistake?

The UConn Blog The Odds are Even

Remarkably, the betting market odds for UConn's game tomorrow have stabilised at exactly even. They opened with UConn a bit ahead, but apparently the consensus believes that UConn's about 4 points better than SDSU but SDSU is playing at home.

Power ranking odds are a bit worse for the Huskies: kenpom has them as 33% to win and Nate Silver has them at 30% (though he told me on twitter that they'd be 46% on a neutral court).

The UConn Blog UConn - Cincinnati Tournament History: 1995 edition

#2 UConn 96 - 91 #7 Cincinatti

I don't remember much about the game, except that watched it in my parents' friends' restaurant, and I thought Cincinnati was pretty good that year. They were led by Danny Fortson, but the Huskies managed to hold him to 10 points on 4-10 shooting. Some dude named Darnell Burton went off for 21, and bench players Art Long and LaZelle Durden had 22 and 25 points, respectively.

On the Huskies side, Ray Allen dropped 24 points on 9-17 shooting, and my personal hero Doron "the Israeli Iceman" Sheffer had 9 dimes alongside his 16 points. Kevin Ollie helped out with 13 from the bench.

UConn would go on to lose a barn burner to UCLA, 102-96, in the elite 8.
