Chambers and Jauron sitting in a tree...
Has anyone thought about how letting Walker go didn't make that much sense. I mean in a way it did but we now have virtually no depth at all. Chambers is good in a pinch I guess, but not for any extended period of time in my opinion. Walker would have been able to fill in for Butler at RT and even at LT if needed, maybe not for the season but for a quarter or game. Seriously I have no confidence in Chambers at all, and if he is such a solid player why didn't any other team come in a snatch him up when we released him. I think it's because no other teams have misplaced more confidence in their O-line than the Bills. Injuries happen and Butler I think will absolutely go down at some point this season, and Walker played that same position last year, and has started there much of his career. Injuries are going ot happen and this Bills offensive line seems completely not ready for that. I mean we don't even have any late round prospects to fill in, we have street free agents which makes me think their upside is very limited.
The resigning of Chambers to me really symbolizes Jaurons entire time in Buffalo. Solid guy when you look at him but can he get the job done... the answer in no. Jauron has put his faith in rookies every year he has been here, and it hasn't worked once, sure 7 and 9 isn't horrible but I don't see many coaches who are considered "good" around the NFL have many season with that record.
I really hope this is the year for this team, but if the injury bug rears it's ugly head like it did two years ago this could be a long season. This team just seems to be running on fumes every season and not really making any progress. Last year our o-line was solid at best but the guys were all under contract for the next few years which was promising that they could someday pull it together. Now it is our biggest weakness.
I hope I'm wrong because I love this team.
Greg Ellis anyone?
So i just read that the Cowboys LB Greg Ellis has been given to seek a trade from the boys. Although he is a LB coming from a 34 and he an older player, I think he would fit perfectly into the Bills defense. He's 6 foot 6 and like 265, he could play LB in goalline packages and short yardage situations, and man can this guy rush the QB. His sack totals are pretty inpressive and even though he plays in a 34 he has some serious pass rush skills. His totals for his entire career starting with his rookie year are as follows: 9, 4, 6, 8, 8, 9, 8, 5, 13, and 8.
Yes he is older but that should aid in the Bills getting him, as he would be either released or traded for almost nothing by the Cowboys. Again he is a 34 LB but I think he can play with a hand in the ground and that he would be an upgrade over some of the other vets currently on the roster (Insert name here). But if he's released I think the Bills should give him a look, he would give them even more weapons to get at the QB.
Altering our new O-line
I have become accustomed to the thought of Walker playing LT next seaon, with Butler moving to RT and the rooks filling at both guard positions. But I wold much rather disrupt my current state on mind by having the Bills sign Levi Jones. He is a proven LT, he just need to prove he can stay healthy, and he gives our O-line that much more flexabiliy. He starts at LT Langston at RT, Levi gets hurt Langstin moves over not bug deal. I just like this team having the depth that other elite have, something which the Bills have lacked in the O-line anyway for some time. If he gives us a better chance to win then why not, we change our stadiums name to "Molson Canadian Stadium" I'm sure we could afford him and the LB just released by St. Louie, don't make me spel him name. This is the Bills chane to make some noise.
Lets Go Bills!!!
Surprise teams from last year resembling the Bills
So last year the Dolphins had the 1st overall pick and the Falcons had the 3rd overall pick. They went different routes in the first round, Miami taking a LT and Atlanta taking a QB. Having rookies starting at crucial positions is a gamble, and it’s exactly what the Bills may end up doing next season. Atlanta took a LT, Sam Baker from USC, in the second round who was their opening day starter. Houston also took a LT in the 1st round who started for them last season. Miami got the best tackle in the draft and he had a great season, but the Texans and Falcons both got lesser talents, both projected as second rounders if I’m not mistaken, and they got the job done for their respective teams. Atlanta’s feature back, Michael Turner, had a monster season with a rookie LT, as did Matt Ryan. Houston didn’t have the success of either of these two teams but they did have a very potent and dangerous offense, top 5 in the NFL. Miami had a very good year with a rookie LT, and even Pennington’s check down style resembles Trent’s to a certain degree. The Dolphins had a huge year on the ground as well. Wherever they get a tackle, I would imagine through the draft, it doesn’t mean they will take a step back offensively. Offensive lines are supposed to gel in training camp, not get everybody out of sync almost guaranteeing sub par blocking for the entire season.
So just because the Bills maybe don’t get a stud tackle with their first pick, there is still hope that they can make the playoffs, and at the very least improve their blocking from last season. The Bills have more weapons now than any of the other 3 teams mentioned in the last paragraph, and just because they might not have a proven quality o-line, doesn’t mean they are dead in the water.
Lets go Bills!
Pressuring opposing QB's w/o drafting a DE
Everyone seems to like the idea of the BIlls taking a DE with the 11th overall pick in this years draft. I like this idea very much but I don't think its necessity for the Bills success next season. First of all Schobel should return to form and be a force like he's been in years past. But I also think that this team needs to blitz more, especially the linebackers, to create more pressure. The Steelers and Giants have such effective defences because they can not only create pressure but they can create pressure whenever they want to. They send the house when they want to make things happen, as opposed to what the Bills seem to do which is wait until one of their DE's makes a play and then hope for a turnover. I think just a slight change in philosophy could aid in this quite nicely. The Giants are a better team to be modeled after, because they do run a 43. They get most of their sacks from their D-line, but their LBs apply a lot of the pressure as well. Mitchell and Puz are solid blitzers in my opinion, and I would really like to see them running at QBs a lot more frequently this upcoming season. Honestly our coaches need to make things happen if they want to be here next year, and I think this change will happen in some capacity.
Offensive Line Shift
So obviously the Bills have a hole at LG. What does everyone think of this:
We trade Peters to the Eagles for the 21st overall pick and maybe a 3rd rounder. We move Walker to LT which he showed the ability to play well during spring training and into the season last year. We shift our best guard, Brad Butler, to LG giving us a solid left side plus they have been paired together on the right side for the better part of two seasons. Now with the Eagles or the 11th pick we take either the best tackle available or Alex Mack. If we take the tackle we keep walker at RT and just move Butler to LG. If we take Mack, we slide the new guy Harantger to RG, he has spent time at guard in his career, or shirt Mack there. Then if Walker is at LT we put either Chambers or Bell at RT. Chambers showed in week one last season he can play there when he shut out the Seahawks Patrick Kerney, and the entire organization is high on D. Bell.
The only reason they would trade Peters is because of the money, and any tackle taken outside the ton 10 would be significantly cheaper than Peters will be. Ryan Clady worked great for the Broncos last season, and I think with the tackles available in this years draft that the Bills could find a staple at the position if the situation played out this way.
Broncos shopping TE Scheffler
Rotoworld is reporting that Denver is currently shopping TE Tony Scheffler who doesn't fit into their new coaches scheme. He has put up solid recieving numbers the past two seasons with 549 and 645 yards the past two seasons. I would imagine he could be had for a late round pick, maybe a 4th or 5th rounder. I think he would be a nice addition to this team, opposing defences would have to pay attention to him, we can get blocking tight ends a lot easier then we can get recieving ones, and we won't have to use our first pick int he draft on one. I think this would be s great move for Russ to make and for this team heading into next season.
The Bills better make some noise, Now!
They just released their starting LG of the past two seasons, the Dolphins have signed to people, Crowder their own linebacker and now Gibril Wilson and free agency hasn't even begun. The Pats are the Pats, but now they have a huge trading chip in Matt Cassell, and the Jets suck on paper but were better than us last year.
Russ Brandon has to have some master plan up his sleeve or else the Bills may end up with a top 5 pick next year. They have too many holes to fill in the draft and stay competetive, but to Russ' credit he did make some moves and improved this team last year, lets hope he can do it again and bring us back to contending for the division (a huge goal but what the hell are they in the league for anyway if that's not their what they are trying to do).
I say hand out some big contracts, it didn't work with Dock but so what, they have to do something. They need to put more pressure on the QB to win more games thats their biggest problem to me. What if they drafted BJ Raji and switched to the 34, is not going to happen this year obviously but they need to do something and the past few years I've gotten really sick of their style of D. It's so passive and reaction oriented, they need more pressure, which will lead to more turnovers which will lead to more W's. I don't know if Ralph has the balls to clean house but this coaching staff if sub-par and if they don't turn it around this year they should be gone. But then the whole process starts over again unless we can get Parcelles to come in and help us.
Jouron's coaching style isn't right for me. Get angry Dick because your team sucks, they have sucked every year you have been their and I want to see that it pisses you off! Yell on the sidelines or at a press conference, PLEASE! Fire this team up and show everyone that it is eating you up inside to have such an average team. Come on man! Your style hasn't worked so far so do something about it. Fire someone just to make a point, promote a promsing lesser coach to create some excitment, just do the stuff coaches on playoff caliber teams do to get a rise out of thier players or your going to be a linebackers coach next year for some doormat or a team, not named the BIlls
They need to make a splash in free agency to show their team that they aren't giving up, to show their fans that they aren't giving up and to show the rest of their division and the league that they are pissed off about last season and are going to be better or are going to die trying. They know what they have to do they just need to do it. THye have the money they just need to spend it. They have to formula they just need to do it on the field. I'd rather see them leave this city than be content with the way they have been playing the last few years. Maybe if Russ is scard to lose his job he will take some risks on questionable players. Do someting Russ because what I saw on the field last year isn't good enough and the Bills owe themselves and their fans better.
Jags WR Reggie Williams is available
I recently read on rotoworld that the Jaguars WR Reggie Williams' contract will not be picked up by the team, making him a free agent this friday. I think he would be a great pickup for the Bills. He is a first round bust but he has been the teams #1 since he got there, he's only 25 and has a lot of experience in the league, the Jags have always been a run first team so it's not surprising his numbers aren't impressive, and on top of all this he's 6 foot 4 and has good speed and works hard. He's been to the playoffs a few times and I think he could add solid veteran leadership to the young recievers the Bills have. He is a bust so he won't cost the Bills that much, and I know if one of our recievers gets hurt next year I want this guy to be getting more snaps as opposed to some massively inexperienced WR like last year; at the very least he will create matchup problems for the Bills opponents. The Bills don't have a matchup nightmare at reciever except for Hardy but he still has to prove himself, and he hopefully will this year.
Jon Kitna
I just read on rotoworld that Jon Kitna is due a roster bonus later this month and he will likely be cut before then. He put up solid numbers the two years prior to this season even on that horrendous Lions team, except for his intterception totals which I'd imagine were mostly his lines fault. He is old but I think he will be extremely cheap and he reminds me of Todd Collins on the Redskins, when he got some time late in the season a few years back for them and took them to the playoffs. I seriously doubt the Bills will spend any money on a quality backup quarterback who could step in and do the job. I think this would be a good move for this team and I think that Kitna is the highest quality backup QB the Bills could legitimately sign.
