Back from the Tour of Ireland, the American rider Craig Lewis (Team Columbia-HTC) and the Belgian manager of Team Astana Johan Bruyneel have contracted the virus.

All indications are that both men have been affected by the virus in Ireland. Craig Lewis felt the first symptoms of the pandemic as it was back home in South Carolina. For its part, the famous manager, winner of nine Tours de France through Lance Armstrong and Alberto Contador, has been hospitalized in Marbella, Spain.

Armstrong and Cavendish headline a streamlined Tour of Ireland

Organisers of the Tour of Ireland professional cycle race, held in association with Fáilte Ireland, have announced a new three day format for 2009. The race, from Friday 21st to Sunday 23rd August, will provide some spectacular racing with seven times Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong bringing his Astana team to Ireland for the first time. Six times Tour de France stage winner Mark Cavendish (Columbia – HTC) also returns to Ireland where he scored three consecutive stage wins last year.

The International Cycling Union presented the regulations that will govern the new 2009 World Calendar in Geneva today. The World Calendar brings together the biggest road cycling events in the world.

The UCI President, Mr Pat McQuaid, said that he was delighted that the new structure had been approved by all the stakeholders in professional road cycling (organisers, teams and riders) and that its launch marked a new start for cycling. The UCI President said that the new structure would allow cycling and everyone involved in the sport to return to a calm, stable environment that would favour the global development of cycling.

Tour de Georgia off for 2009

The Tour de Georgia has been called off for 2009, with organisers citing 'tough' economic times as the reason, according to the Savannah Morning News. The race's future had been in doubt, but Georgia is not ready to give up on the Tour. The state's Lieutenant Governor Casey Cagle said that they will use next year to focus on getting the race back on the road for 2010. Cagle, who serves as chairman of the race's board of directors, said this decision will strengthen the race in for future.
