Nicklas Backstrom did miss regular season games due to a fractured thumb. But according to both McPhee and Boudreau, the center was healthy in the playoffs. Backstrom had two assists in nine playoff games.

It's time to sign Marleau.
Assuming he's there July 1st. In fact, I wouldn't be opposed to trading for his rights (Steckel?) Ok I digress -
And not only that, but sign him to one of those bogus deals that teams like Chicago, Vancouver, Philadelphia, etc. get to benefit from. Here is my initial proposal to him:
10 year deal ->
7.0 M for 5 years
3.0 M for 3 years
1.0 M for 2 years
Cap hit = 4.6M per.
Now, debate away at whether or not this is the move to make, but this is the type of aggressiveness I want to see from GMGM. It's time to step up to the table and take advantage of what is out there, and if that means "cheating" the cap, SO EFFING BE IT.
Discuss.
Where's our Bowman?
We could have used him when BB was getting over-matched.
...having Evgeni Malkin as a teammate -- even the moody, now-you-see-him-now-you-don't version this season -- beats the hell out of watching Semin and Green melt into the ice in a pressure situation.
National Post, from today's clips
I don't know if there's a point to it, but it made me chuckle in a sad way.
Let's Drop the Puck...on Sunday afternoon?
Forgive me for beating a dead horse, but again I must ask - who is the genius at NBC making these decisions? A great San Jose / Chicago series is going to start on a Sunday afternoon in May. You know what Sunday afternoons are for? Football. And that's when the weather is cold. You know what else? Baseball. And that's when you feel like taking a nap during the game.
These ridiculous weekend afternoon timeslots are accomplishing the exact opposite of their intent, which is capturing casual fan interest. Only the diehards will give up the middle of their day on a beautiful Sunday in May, and even that isn't a given for me. Yes, I am a hockey fan. Yes, I'm interested, but is there stuff I'd rather do on Sunday? Yeah.
Consider this: what is going on Sunday night? A random baseball game? What would be better than wrapping a weekend up with a great hockey game around 7 or 8 EDT? You think more people are going to watch Sunday afternoon? Really?
I believe our hockey IQ seemed low this series and we didn’t adjust well on the ice to the new schemes coming our way.
The Boss. I think it's fair to say the coaching staff is on notice.
The Capitals will spend a long time washing the stain of this loss out of their psyches. In less than a week, they managed to forge a brand-new reputation for themselves -- a wildly skilled team that somehow still lacks the gut-check gene.
Another [expletive] Game 7.
I was a little too hot-headed last night.
Ken Campbell of The Hockey News reported Rob Blake was the competition committee's deciding vote against going to four-on-four OT in the playoffs. Blake deserves a spot in the Hall of Fame just for that.
March 1. DirecTV. Versus. WTF.
At this point, does anyone really think this is not going to end with us DTV subs missing playoff games?
At least I have the most accessible owner in pro sports to help state my case, but I was a little disappointed with what I got in reply.
I want to re-iterate that although some of those answers sound flip, he was just being direct and he was not necessarily blowing me off. However, this troubles me:
I will call them again - so far it hasn't worked.
How about all 30 of you and good old Gary B call them?
Why is it my issue?
Um, you know...that whole growing the game thing? Trying to establish a national presence?
Comcast SportsNet - that is really my product.
An isolationist, regionalized approach? Really? Certainly life is good for CSN and Ted right now, but wouldn't life be better if more people could watch his Caps on Versus?
What are you fellow DTV folks going to do come April? I can't believe that this absurdity continues. Versus doesn't want to be on a limited tier so - they get nothing and like it? And the NHL, largely roasted for this TV deal to begin with, sits back while this goes on for an entire NHL season? Fans getting corn-holed again? Why not.

Canada v Russia: Who ya got?
What a game this should be, and amazing that the loser is leaving Vancouver without a medal.
My head is saying Russia, but my gut is saying Canada. I think they were left for dead a little bit after losing to the US and being relegated to the qualification round. This is probably the game everyone wanted for the gold medal, but Canada/US would be a fantastic gold medal game (not that Russia/US would suck).
So I'm going (betting) against Ovie, and I already feel dirty about it. Oh and the odds makers aren't helping the matter by making Canada a 5:7 or as high as a 5:8 favorite. I still can't see the Canadians losing this tournament, and putting the Russians out of the medals sets up for the sweet payback in 2014 at Sochi, where the Russians will win gold.
Here we go.
Deadline looms, what will Ted do?
Washington Capitals owner Ted Leonsis is negotiating against a Wednesday deadline to buy the Washington Wizards and Verizon Center from the estate of sports entrepreneur Abe Pollin, a deal that could put him as lead owner of the region's biggest sports and entertainment empire.
"I don't know. It is such a hard thing," coach Bruce Boudreau said when asked what Alzner needs to do to become a permanent fixture on his roster. "I want to see him be really consistent. The last time he was up here, it was the consistency. I thought he had three really good games, a mediocre game and a not-so-good game. If he could keep that consistency like the very first time he played when he was up here [Nov. 25 against Buffalo], he would be hard to send down."

We're not going to do anything right now anyway. We like our team, we like the way they've been playing.
So what's the (best) deal on getting some tickets?
Great to have the Rink Ticket Exchange, but it's looking a little lean for the game I want to go to - Buf 11/25.
Anybody used the Ticket-Raper exchange? I was hoping to sit in the lower (blue) section, but c'mon - $130 minimum for these? Aren't these $85 tickets? I love how we are 'sold out' so ticket brokers can bend us over. Is this game a red, white or blue?
Until recently I almost always bought my tickets from the Brother Man outside the arena and never paid face. Does this still go on or is that market dried up?
Thanks in advance!
Say goodbye to the trapezoid?
I'm okay with this only because to me it didn't seem like it was making that much of a difference. But according to that article defensemen are taking too many hits because of times the goalie can't play the puck? Not sure I follow that, and wouldn't that be good for scoring if it were true?
I know it's only the first game...
but how would another 3 years @ $5,625,000 per of this be tasting right now?? :-)
"Boston just introduced the players," Boudreau said. "They didn't show any banners, did they? Their goals are bigger than division championships. I think ours are bigger than division championships. We raised the banner last year. There's no sense in raising it again."
Some interesting propositions
The Caps points total is tied with the Wings for highest on the board. Not quite the bargain it was last year at 94.
DirecTV set to drop Versus
Great. Another network/carrier pissing contest.
"It's hard for me to congratulate somebody after you just lose to them," he said. "I'm a winner. It's not being a poor sport or anything like that. If somebody beats you up, you're not going to congratulate them. That doesn't make sense to me. I'm a competitor. That's what I do. It doesn't make sense for me to go over and shake somebody's hand."

No Leonsis? Say what?
What has Lemieux done? Smile and nodded while Bettman handed him Crosby?
