What Does Marcin Gortat Know About Dwight?

6
"Gortat told the media he knew he was going to play today because he can tell when Howard is going to get in foul trouble before the game even starts." ~Andrew Melnick @ HowardtheDunk This is a quote worth exploring. How can Marcin tell ahead of time? What are Dwight's tells?

10. You have told me that many coaches do things you simply cannot understand, for instance by ignoring some really good lineups. What are some of the best lineups from this season, and are some of them not being played enough? As I described above, the Lakers have the best lineups. After that, some of the best in the League are: .... Magic: Ryan Anderson, Matt Barnes, Dwight Howard, Jameer Nelson and J.J. Redick Rating +56 Magic: Matt Barnes, Vince Carter, Rashard Lewis, Dwight Howard and Jason Williams Rating +36 More Wayne Winston Nuggets from the "10 Weeks In - 10 Questions with Wayne Winston" True Hoop articleLook at the numbers for these lineups. Nelson with Ryan Anderson and JJ Redick and Williams with Rashard Lewis and Vince Carter. In a league where "starting" is so important to players and image, would SVG consider swapping Jameer and Jason Williams? Or, at least, will he make these kinds of adjustments to who plays together (i.e. bringing Williams in off the bench much sooner with the 1st unit)?

2. How has the Vince Carter for Hedo Turkoglu swap worked for Orlando? Last year Hedo Turkoglu had a plus-2 rating, but was plus-12 against Cavaliers. Carter has a plus-9 rating but what matters is how he plays against Cavs, Celtics and Hawks. So far Vince has averaged +12 rating against these guys so things look good. The Magic have by far the deepest team in league. The 11th and 12th men are Marcin Gortat and Brandon Bass! Jason Williams has a plus-10 rating has been great at point with Jameer Nelson only minus-2. I think Dwight Howard hides Williams' defensive problems. The problem for the Magic is that Rashard Lewis (minus-11) and Mickael Pietrus (minus-9) have played poorly. On the other hand J.J. Redick, Matt Barnes and David Anderson have been excellent. I think they can show more different good lineup combinations than anybody. If Stan Van Gundy pushes the right buttons I think they will win the East. So far Magic, at plus-7.5 points, have best overall team rating in NBA. True Hoop - 10 Weeks In - 10 Questions for Wayne Winston Ryan Anderson gets no respect in being incorrectly identified as "David" in this post, but at least he gets credit for his play. And, it is good news (when the stats-man favors your team) after everybody's doom and gloom about Dwight and Jameer following the Chicago loss.

Beating Celtics on Christmas just got easier?

Paul Pierce to miss game after knee irrigation and Garnett missed the game versus Indiana....will he return? And, Boston just recalled Bill Walker from the D-League. Hope these guys have a speedy recover and that the Celts lose every game that they're out.

And, yes, the Suns should get extra credit for not packing it in. For not giving up, playing the last game of the road trip, or the fifth game in seven nights. Or even for passing on trying to shoot their way back. Yes, the three-pointers were falling tonight; but the Suns weren't greedy in that second half. They could have been lazy and tried to chuck their way back, passable because all those bombs were going in. But the Suns drove. They talked, they pointed, they moved their feet, they moved the ball, and they won.

Also, the suspensions for Rashard Lewis and Jamaal Magloire have to be accounted for; teams are billed for only 50% of the money players lose when suspended by the league.

This tidbit about how suspensions impact luxury tax calculations comes from the oft-entertaining Shamsports blog article, A Brief History Of Luxury Tax . Interesting reading if you're into the numbers.

"Big Baby" Glen Davis - Out for the Season?

Originally, we questioned whether or not the older players on the Celtics could stay healthy for the whole season. They may have lost one of their younger ones in a non-basketball-related injury. Though with the arrival of Sheed, Big Baby was looking at reduced minutes anyway. Maybe Sheldon Williams fills the gap. (h/t Dime Magazine online)

Any while we're posting NBA top 10's. Two Magic players make the cut in last Friday's highlights (vs. Houston). Gortat at #8 with a dunk and VC at #7 with a drive and dunk. UCF-alumnus, Jermaine Taylor, dunks in #5 off of a Jason Williams TO. Oh, and on Sunday's highlights former Magic player Rafer Alston (now with the Nets) gets stuffed by Rasheed in #9 while former Magic player Courtney Lee (also now a Net) passes the ball to the Celt's Marquis Daniels leading to a dunk in #8. Never want to be on that side of a highlight.

Howard makes #7 (block) and #2 (dunk) on the NBA's top 10 of the day clips from last Wednesday. Nothing unusual for Dwight, but I thought Michael Beasley--who got his shot stuffed by D12 in the #7 highlight--trying to bump Dwight after the play was pretty funny. (And, so is Dwight's facial reaction.) Guess ol' Mikey didn't like getting his stuff whacked outta the paint.

It's a Contract Year for Rafer

2

ESPN radio's AM1050 out of NY is reporting that Rafer Alston wants out of NJ to a team that will give him a more prominent role and more playing time (NY Knicks and Miami Heat leading that list). I guess he's not too happy backing up Devon Harris and competing with Keyon Dooling playing time. So, does this prove correct all those who said Alston would not be happy in the role of backup PG on the Magic? With Jameer back, do you think it was a good thing that Rafer was traded away from Orlando in the offseason?

6. Mickael Pietrus — His stealth is even more impressive than his dirty play. In an Eastern Conference Finals series where LeBron James was getting sent to the line if you brushed up against him, Pietrus somehow managed to elbow LBJ square in the groin while ‘Bron was in mid-air and didn’t get called for it. You’d think the refs would be all over that.

Two NBA sources confirmed that Watson will soon take a one-year qualifying offer from the Golden State Warriors worth $1.05 million. What that means is Watson said no to a three-year contract from the Warriors worth $5.4 million.

Matt Steinmetz at NBA Fanhouse I know CJ Watson is "old" news now, but since he was on the Magic's radar earlier this summer, I thought folks might want to know about this update.

Puerto Rico's Carlos Arroyo wishes he would have handled things differently with Utah coach Jerry Sloan when he started as point guard for the Jazz. "When (our differences) emerged, I should have approached Jerry Sloan," Arroyo told ESPN Deportes' Alvaro Martin in an interview for TV. "I should have done it right there; waiting for things to just happen was not the right decision." Arroyo, who signed with the Jazz after splitting his first NBA season with the Toronto Raptors and Denver Nuggets, was appointed the starting point guard by Sloan after John Stockton retired in 2003. He clashed at times with Sloan over the way the offense was ran.

Since there was so much chatter this offseason about the possibility of Carlos Arroyo's return to the Magic or another team in the NBA (and since we hold his Bird Rights), I thought this reporting from Alfredo R. Berrios, ESPNdeportes.com at TrueHoop might be of interest.

When I heard this weekend that new Timberwolves coach Kurt Rambis was mostly likely going to add Bill Laimbeer and Reggie Theus to his staff, this got me thinking: If there was a 3-on-3 tournament amongst the NBA’s current coaching staff, who would win? Below are each team’s 3-on-3 squad and their credentials… Magic: Stan Van Gundy (college basketball for his father at SUNY Brockport), Patrick Ewing (17 seasons, 11 NBA All-Star Games and one of the 50 Greatest Players in NBA history) and Steve Clifford (four years with the University of Maine at Farmington)

Interesting read from Aron Phillips of Dime Magazine. He puts together a 3-on-3 roster for every team in the league using current coaching staff. Who do you think would win?

"I'm going to be a man on a mission,'' Lee said Thursday afternoon after a training session at the IMG Academy. "I just hope they'll be happy for me when I grow into the player that they wish they had. I'd like them to one day say 'I wish we would have kept him.''' "I know it's a business, and trades happen, but it's not something you forget, even when you look forward like I am.''

Tim Potvak of NBA Fanhouse Wow. I think revenge will only take you so far as a motivation. I liked Courtney and hope he soon rises above making these kind of statements. Doesn't sound like he is really treating it like "it's a business." Read the whole thing.
