Purple Row Rockies acquire Ramon Ortiz from Minnesota

The Rockies have acquired Minnesota's Ramon Ortiz for Triple-A infielder Matt Macri.

__________________________________

This trade is part of a series of roster moves by the Rockies today, who've also promoted both Ramon Ramirez and Elmer Dessens to take spots on the 25 man roster, according to Denver Post. The Dessens call up is troubling, since it's to take Cook's place in the rotation temporarily, who might be pushed back to Saturday.

What we still don't know is who's leaving the roster. It looks as if nobody is heading down to the Springs for the time being, since the Rockies also moved Juan Morillo and Judd Songster to Triple A to take the places of Dessens and Ramirez. Taveras' trip to the DL opens up one 25 man spot, but where the other two spots, as well as the 40 man spot for Ortiz come from, is unknown to us at this time.

Ortiz is pretty much a journeyman pitcher who faced early ridicule in Minnesota for taking a roster spot away from one of their younger, talented pitchers (hmm, why does this sound familiar?). He's pitched to a 5.14 ERA between starting and relief, and has produced a meager VORP of 5.7 in 91 innings. He's long had troubles with the longball as a starter, but that hasn't been much of an issue this season. Ortiz has long caught the eye of O'Dowd and Co., but like many recent acquisitions, he comes past his prime and unlikely to make a large impact.

So, which is more disheartening to you? That we've lost Matt Macri, we've gained Ramon Ortiz, we're experiencing injury difficulties with Cook, we're being forced to rely on Dessens to start, or that we likely won't be seeing the young, talented Morales (despite prodding from players) any time soon?

Update [2007-8-15 19:24:21 by David OhNo]:The story keeps getting worse. The Rocky Mountain News is now reporting that Cook is heading to the DL. For the next two weeks, our rotation could be Francis, Jimenez, Fogg, Dessens, and Ortiz. Our playoff odds just got a considerably smaller as the nightmare that started last night continues into the late afternoon hours of today. Oh please, Ubaldo, give us fans a sliver of hope tonight.

Purple Row Mike Coolbaugh (1972-2007) ---- Rest in Peace

Tulsa Drillers' first base coach Mike Coolbaugh dies after being hit by foul ball

From the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette:

The first base coach of the Tulsa Drillers died after being struck by a foul ball during a game at Dickey-Stephens Park on Sunday night, officials confirmed.

Mike Coolbaugh was hit in the side of the head during in the top of ninth inning with Drillers player Tino Sanchez at bat. Coolbaugh collapsed to the ground and lay there motionless as medical personnel and team members came to his side. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation was performed on the field.

Coolbaugh, 35, then was transported to Baptist Health Medical Center in North Little Rock. He was pronounced dead a short time later, according to Sgt. Terry Kuykendall, spokesman for the North Little Rock Police Department.

According to the Tulsa Drillers Web site, Coolbaugh joined the team on July 3.
The game was suspended with the Arkansas Travelers leading 7-3 with no outs in the ninth inning.

Very sad.  I had the pleasure of meeting Coolbaugh a few years ago.   He was very personable and friendly from what I remember.  Coolbaugh had spent the last 17 years involved in professional baseball as both a player and a coach.  Coolbaugh is survived by his wife, Mandy, and two young sons, Joseph and Jacob. Mandy Coolbaugh is expecting another child in October.

Update [2007-7-23 15:29:29 by Russ]: The Rockies have issued a statement, and a memorial fund has been set up in his memory. For those who want to donate:

Purple Row Game #22: Fogg vs. Pelfrey

With Josh Fogg on the hill I'm not too optimistic about our chances, but the offense has to break out some time.  Why not today?   Mike Pelfrey certainly isn't a world beater by any means.  Hopefully the Rockies can take advantage of his two-pitch nature and relative inexperience.

Avoid the sweep and leave New York with a modicum of dignity remaining.  Just do it, it's as simple as that.

Purple Row 4/21 Roster Moves

Bobby Keppel and Ryan Speier have been called up from Colorado Springs.

Matt Herges was designated for assignment to clear a 40-man roster spot for Keppel.
He had thrown four innings over the last three days and the Rockies felt the need to bring up a fresh arm.

"In fairness to Matt maybe it was a little bit of him (being ineffective)," manager Clint Hurdle said. "But he's thrown a lot. He threw the last day he was in Colorado Springs, he threw an inning the first day he was (Thursday) and he threw yesterday. We need to fill some voids right now."
Most importantly, Ramon Ramirez was placed on the 15-day DL with a sprained right elbow.
Ramirez, who's been effective as a seventh-inning reliever, injured his arm Tuesday night against the Giants. Ramirez was credited with a win in the Rockies' 5-3 victory. Ramirez's stint on the disabled list is retroactive to Wednesday, meaning he's eligible to return on May 3.

Purple Row Asheville Roster Announced

Asheville’s opening day roster was released this afternoon:

Lineup: (8)
C Michael McKenry
1B Michael Paulk
2B Daniel Mayora
SS Hector Gomez
3B Spence Nagy
LF Jay Cox
CF Anthony Jackson
RF Vic Ferrante

Bench: (5)
C Jhaysson Agustin
1B Logan Wiens
2B/SS/3B Geoff Strickland
2B/SS/3B Radames Nazario
OF Bret Berglund

Pitchers: (12)

RHP Simon Ferrer
RHP Andy Graham
RHP Craig Baker
LHP Tommy Baumgardner
RHP Sean Jarrett
RHP Ethan Katz
RHP Andy Kreidermacher
RHP James Burok
RHP Zach Simons

There are many surprises here. Namely, the absences of Brian Aguailar, Chris Cook(injured?), Matt Repec(injured), Josh Banda and a few others.  It's also surprising to see Agustin, Nagy, Nazario and Wiens on the team.  Injured relievers Will Harris and David Bechtold will begin the season in extended spring training, but should eventually join the team at a later date.

Although I doubt this team will be as successful as Colorado Springs, Tulsa or Modesto, they still should be interesting to watch nonetheless.

Purple Row Knuckleballer Simon Ferrer added to 40-man roster; Optioned to Tulsa

Brian Lawrence was also placed on the 15-day DL, as the Rockies finalized their opening day roster.

This is a very odd move by the Rockies.

I don't get it.  What's the point of adding Ferrer to the 40-man?

Projected 2007 Team: Colorado Springs (AAA)
Age on April 1st: 24
Born: September 30, 1982 in Jackson, Mississippi
Height: 6-3 | Weight: 215
Bats: L | Throws: L
Drafted: 2nd Round, 2004 | How Acquired: Draft
College: University of Mississippi | High School: Hillcrest Christian (MS)
Contract Notes: Rule 5 eligible following 2007 season.
ETA: 2008
Other: -2007: Ranked as the 16th best prospect in the Rockies organization by Baseball America.
-Had Lasik eye surgery prior to the 2006 season.
-Was the backup quarterback to Eli Manning at the University of Mississippi.

Scouting Report / Bio: Big athlete often compared to Matt Holliday, but doesn't show the same athleticism. Smith has solid plate coverage with a pretty line drive stroke. Power could still come, but doesn't have the same loft to his hits as most power hitters. Could be more patience. Defensively, Smith takes erratic routes and his arm is just average. Best profile may be in left field.

Future Outlook: Average MLB starting left fielder

Joe Gaetti

Position(s): Outfielder
Projected 2007 Team: Tulsa (AA) or Colorado Springs (AAA)
Age on April 1st: 25
Born: October 18, 1981 in Centralia, Illinois
Height: 5-11 | Weight: 205
Bats: R | Throws: R
Drafted: 12th Round, 2003 | How Acquired: Draft
College: North Carolina State | High School:
Contract Notes: Currently Rule 5 eligible.
ETA: 2008
Other: -Son of former major-league third-basemen Gary Gaetti
-2005 California League All-Star

Scouting Report / Bio: A player that plays above his tools. Gaetti's biggest asset is his power. Has an upper cut swing that can get long, but can punish pitchers with impressive homers to left and left-centerfield. Short and stocky, Gaetti may lack in athleticism, and despite time in center, is best fit in left field, where his arm and range are still average to fringe average. He has been old for his leagues, and despite his minor league numbers, he may not be able to translate them to higher levels.

Future Outlook: MLB fourth outfielder, but with the pop and "gamer" mentality to surprise.

College: University of Tennessee | High School:
Contract Notes: Currently Rule 5 eligible.
ETA: 2008
Other: -2006 Texas League All-Star
-2004 South Atlantic League All-Star

Scouting Report / Bio: Older prospect with solid tools for a centerfielder. His power improved in AA, but it is more of the gap variety, and homer totals likely won't increase as he moves up. Jordan has a solid approach at the plate, but wraps the bat a little, and average could be a concern. Speed looks better home to first than from first to second, and he could take more advantage of his speed on defense. Arm was fringe average for AA.

Future Outlook: AAA centerfielder

-2007: Ranked as the 5th best prospect in the Rockies organization by Baseball America.
-2006 Abby Greer Award winner (Spring Training MVP)
-2004 South Atlantic League All-Star

Scouting Report / Bio: Bigger than his listed 205 lbs., Stewart has a thick, athletic build, with the type of lower body common in power hitters. Still very adept in the field; quick on balls in front, good range glove side, and a strong but sometimes erratic arm. At the plate, Stewart has a patient approach, but is still prone to slumps. His uppercut swing doesn't stay in the zone as long as it should, but he can lace line drives to every part of the field when he's on. Late bloomer with real power potential, but average is up for debate. Similar to Eric Chavez.

Future Outlook: Middle of the order threat with slick glove, but may not match upside of David Wright or Ryan Zimmerman.

Other: 2007: Ranked as the 13th best prospect in the Rockies organization by Baseball America.
-2006 Texas League All-Star
-2005 South Atlantic League All-Star
-2005 Organizational Player of the Year

Scouting Report / Bio: Imposing stature with wide, thick upper body; a more athletic looking Travis Hafner build. Unlike Hafner, Koshansky will stick in the field, with above average range defensively and soft hands at first. Koshansky's swing is long, but he has a patient approach at the plate and understands what pitches he can drive. Power to all fields, but primarily the right-center gap. Despite high strikeout totals, Koshansky has been able to hit for both average and power. Still has been a bit old for each level.

Future Outlook: MLB starter, but where and how much of his minor league totals will transfer are big questions.

Scouting Report / Bio: Big, physically strapping catcher with the type of tools you'd like in a backup. Colina has arm strength behind the plate, but could use better accuracy and footwork. At the plate, Colina can launch balls to the alley, but his swing is long and his ability to work the count could be better. It's doubtful he could hit consistently enough to start long term.

Contract Notes: 1 option year remaining
ETA: 2008
Other: -2007: Ranked as the 12th best prospect in the Rockies organization by Baseball America.
-2006 Texas League All-Star

Scouting Report / Bio: Morillo's raw power has never been questioned. He sits in the high nineties throughout his starts, but Juan has struggled to consistently throw strikes or show a quality slider or change. Immediate future may be in the pen, but Morillo has the type of relaxed mechanics and easy arm motion to throw 200+ innings in the pros. If he can harness both his control and command, he has the type of arm to throw 70+ innings a year at the back of the bullpen.

Future Outlook: Middle reliever most likely, with outside shot as a closer or number two starter.

Scouting Report / Bio: A right-handed reliever with no true major league pitch, Beckstead's greatest attribute is his versatility. He's capable of throwing one to three innings with similar effectiveness, and has pitched several games in a row. Reportedly throws in the high eighties, Beckstead lacks quality movement on his pitches, and his breaking ball can be rather slurvy.

Future Outlook: Triple A long/middle reliever, but likely no cup of coffee in the bigs.

Purple Row Checking in from Tucson....

I don't have time to write much.  Anyway, I hung out at the minor league complex most of the day before attending today's game at Hi Corbett.

Some notes:

-I saw Fowler, Mayora, Chris Nelson, Garner, Cuadrado and a few others take batting practice and all looked very impressive.  Fowler also made a few nice catches in the outfield and I was impressed by his defense and extensive range.

-I saw Adam Bright, Simon Ferrer, Matt Daley, Yull Silano, Josh Sullivan, Brandon Hynick, Ching-Lung Lo, Yull Silano and a few others throw bullpen sessions. Sullivan and Hynick looked especially impressive.

-Deduno, Strop and Aneury Rodriguez are still stuck in the Dominican Republic dealing with visa issues and have yet to report to camp.

-Also, over the last few weeks the Rockies have signed the following players:
RHP Tim Bausher
RHP Tim LaVigne
C Luis Apodaca (re-signed)
SS Tim Olson
IF Nick Haley
OF Lino Garcia
OF John Restrepo(re-signed)

LaVigne looks intriguing and may have a spot in the Sky Sox bullpen.

Height: 5-10        | Weight: 175
Bats: R     | Throws: R
Drafted: N/A     | How Acquired: Signed as a minor league free agent (January, 2004)
College: Pepperdine University    | High School:
Contract Notes: Currently Rule 5 eligible.
ETA: 2009
Other: -Was a position player from 2002-2005.

Scouting Report / Bio: After spending four seasons as a utility infielder, Ferrer was converted to a pitcher in 2006.  His first season as a pitcher was a successful one, as he posted a 1.54 ERA over 34 innings pitched. Ferrer has developed an impressive knuckleball and his success relies solely on how well he can throw the difficult pitch. Ferrer also occasionally mixes in a high-70s cut fastball and a slider.  He is the first knuckleballer to pitch in the Rockies system and has consulted with legendary knuckleballer Charlie Hough.

Future Outlook: Knuckleballers are very unique and unpredictable.   Ferrer could eventually develop into a serviceable back-of-the-rotation starter or swingman at higher levels.

ETA: 2010
Other: -Was an infielder from 2002-2005.

Scouting Report / Bio: The former light-hitting infielder was converted to a pitcher in 2006.  He reinvented himself as a prospect in 2006, going 3-1 with a 3.42 ERA and racking up 35 strikeouts over 26 1/3 innings pitched between Casper and Asheville.  Strop has a seemingly effortless quick-armed delivery that produces a 93-95 mph fastball with a good amount of late movement.  He also throws a plus low-80s slider, but he has yet to throw it consistently for strikes.  Because of his power arm, Strop drew interest from several teams prior to the 2006 Rule 5 draft and was nearly taken.  His mechanics are very raw and he needs to be brought along slowly.

Future Outlook: Intriguing late-innings power reliever

Scouting Report / Bio: Simons had a horrific season in 2006, compiling a 6.29 ERA and a 1.64 WHIP.  One of the biggest problems Simons faced in 06 was his loss of command, which had previously been Simons' calling card and best attribute.  He throws a 88-90 mph fastball, a slider and a changeup.  Simons will likely assume a relief role in 2007 in an attempt to regain his prospect status.

Future Outlook: Too early to tell--- also too early to give up on him, but he profiles as a fringy middle reliever.

Scouting Report / Bio: Roe is a very intriguing prospect and has all the tools to become a middle-of-the-rotation starter.  Roe's fastball has lots of movement and tops out at 95, but he typically works in the low-90s.   His best pitch is a sharp-breaking curveball and also throws an average changeup.  As he fills out and continues to mature, Roe may add a few more mph to his fastball. He has good mechanics and throws at an over-the-top downward angle.  He began 2006 in extended spring training, as the Rockies wanted to closely monitor his workload in his first full professional season.

ETA: 2010
Injury Status: Out until July (labrum surgery)
Other: -2007: Ranked as the 18th best prospect in the Rockies organization by Baseball America.
-2005 Northwest League Player of the Year

Scouting Report / Bio: One of the most exciting pitchers in the Rockies system, Lindsay is a notorious strikeout artist and a true power pitcher.  Lindsay's arsenal features a 94-96 mph fastball, an impressive power curveball and a mediocre changeup.  He has an extreme high-overhand delivery and creates a lot of movement on his pitches.  In order to have a successful career, Lindsay must overcome two big issues: injuries and control.  Lindsay underwent surgery to repair a partially torn labrum in November of 2006 and is expected to miss the first half of the 2007 season.  In addition to his labrum issues, Lindsay has also been diagnosed with scoliosis(a curvature of the spine), which may cause long term injury concerns.   He will begin the season rehabbing in extended spring training, before joining Tri-City in July and eventually pitching for Modesto late in the season.

Future Outlook: Control problems and injuries make Lindsay's future murky, but he currently projects as a future setup-man or closer.

Newman isn't a power pitcher and instead relies on a deceptive, herky-jerky pitching motion to fool hitters.  Newman throws an upper-80s fastball, a changeup and a sweeping slider.

He is a steady line-drive hitter with a good sense of plate discipline.  Macri was an average defender at third-base while at Notre Dame and owns a strong, accurate arm.

Future Outlook: Major league or Triple-A utility-man. Needs to stay healthy.
