Richardson to Stick With CU

Fret no more Buffs fans, Super Freshman Paul Richardson has decided to remain with the Colorado Buffaloes! http://www.timescall.com/news_story.asp?ID=24457 Richardson caused a stir in the Nebraska post-game conference when he refused to commit to returning next year. His comments fueled speculation that he might be looking to transfer. After giving it some thought, he's decided to stay put. Look for P-Rich in a new number but he'll definitely be sticking around next season. Congratulations to Paul on a great choice and on having the best freshman year of any wideout in CU history!

The news around Boulder keeps getting better and better. Go Buffs, bring on the Pac 12!

The human lightning-rod known as Coach Dan Hawkins remains the hot-button issue for Buffs fans. Some might say the fire under his seat is even hotter after last week's debacle on the road (AGAIN!!!). He probably didn't do himself any favors by yanking Tyler Hansen in favor Cody. Just trying to spark the team! Justin Torres Leaves CU

Colorado Buffaloes Coach Dan Hawkins has confirmed that Freshman running back, Justin Torres, has left the team for personal reasons. Coach Hawkins did not specify what those reasons are but did leave the door open for Torres to return. Torres, JT, is a true freshman and the only running back in this year's recruiting class to receive playing time through the first four games of the season. He is a big back used primarily in short yardage situations and was likely due for increased playing time as the rigorous Big XII schedule kicked in. This is not a good sign as the Buffs head into Big XII conference play. Who'll pick up his role? Do the Buffs burn Cordary Clark's red-shirt with a third of the season gone?

Motivation for CU's Big XII Farewell Tour

As if there wasn't enough riding on this season, the Buffs final (in all likelihood) year in the Big XII, take a look at how the rest of the league, er bush-league, views Colorado football. Both the Tulsa World(http://www.tulsaworld.com/news/article.aspx?articleid=20100801_231_B9_APfile792683) and The Oklahoman (http://newsok.com/big-12-football-players-answer-the-tough-questions/article/3481540?custom_click=rss&utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter) polled the rest of the Big XII to gauge the
attitudes of our conference brethren regarding the Big XII and any special feelings toward the departing programs at Colorado and Nebraska. Answers were interesting, mostly anonymous and some flattering but in other cases annoying and at times downright disrespectful. Here's just a few examples:

More Offensive Firepower Coming CU's Way?

Well it took awhile but it appears that The Hawk may be waking from his summer slumber. The Buffs have been beating the Southern California bushes, trolling for unused talent to upgrade their roster. First Travon Patterson and now this:

Kyle Ringo at Buffzone is reporting that former UCLA receiver Paul Richardson is considering a transfer to CU.

Richardson and his cousin Shaquille and one other member of UCLA's star-studded 2010 recruiting class were dismissed and released from their scholarships when they were accused of stealing a fellow student's back-pack. All three (LB Josh Shirley was the other and just this week transferred to Washington) were freshman who haven't seen the field for the Bruins. Charges are still pending but if he gets a good resolution (read: non-felony) Paul Richardson could be Buff Bound. Some of you die-hard TRR fans will recall that two years ago Richardson was a wide receiver catching touchdowns from none other than CU's own Clark Evans (QB turned TE) . Since he was apparently enrolled in summer classes at UCLA at the time of the incident does that prevent him from being eligible this Fall? Comments/questions?

D-Line Help on the Way? Grandview's Chris Martin Transfers from Cal

Chris Martin, the consensus No 1 defensive end in the 2010 recruiting class is looking for a new home with less distractions. Martin played his senior year right here in Colorado at Aurora's Grandview High after transferring from his hometown of Oakland. After committing to Notre Dame, he changed his committment to hometown Cal when Charlie Weis left the Irish. Now, Martin is on the move again due to excessive distractions playing in the Bay area. Anybody got this kid's ear? There are NO distractions in Boulder, right? Surely the Buffs would make room for a defensive stalwart like this dude, right? What are the odds Hawk's burning up this guy's phone, texting e-mailing til his fingers fall off? Yea, too much to hope for . . . but ya never know. The kid still has family in Aurora. CU will be joining the Pac-10 sooner than later. . . I know, dream on? Check it out.

Simas Suspended Indefinitely, Career as a Buff Likely Over

As had been expected, the CU Athletic Department and Dan Hawkins announced tonight that WR Markques Simas has been suspended indefinitely. His scholarship has been pulled but Coach Hawkins left the door open for his return as a walk-on next fall. There's a ton of stuff Simas would have to get through first before he could even get that slim chance. Given his history with the program, he's not likely to see the field again as a Buff. Tough break for the Buffs (Paging Mr. Clemons, Mr. Clemons, you're needed on the deep route!) bad choice, yet again, for Simas. Where does this leave the chances for the Buffs' first winning season for Hawk this Fall? Talk amongst yourselves and here's a link to the CUbuffs.com piece.

Alfred Williams Named to the College Football Hall of Fame

Although the official word comes tomorrow morning in a formal press release, those loyal listeners tuning into A.W.'s afternoon drive-time radio program on FM 104.3 The Fan this afternoon heard the news first hand. Colorado AD Mike Bohn and SID Dave Plati made the announcement live on the air during Williams' show; he has indeed been named to the College Hall. Per the Statman (Plati) more than 5 million people have played college football in history but only 800 are in the Hall. The news left the normally loquacious talk-radio star speechless. What a tremendous and well-deserved honor for one of the true greats in CU football history.

Williams becomes the first member of CU's 1990 National Championship team to be elected to the Hall of Fame. Big Al remains CU's all-time leader in tackles for loss (59) and quarterback sacks (35), was a 2-time All Big 8 Defender, 2-time All American and winner of the 1990 Butkus Award. Williams will be officially recognized at the HOF festivities this December in NYC. CU plans additional festivities honoring Williams and the 20th Anniversary of the National Championship team this Fall.

Congratulations, Alfred! Thanks for the memories!

Not much happening in Buff Land these days or with TRR for that matter (the boyz are working too hard or on a long vacation). Even in this dead period, the topic of conference expansion remains hot, hot, hot. Anyone else got the feeling that CU and the Pac-10 are slow dancing til the timing is right to announce their impending marriage?

Here's a couple perspectives for your consideration. Note even the Buffs worst enemy (aka John Henderson at the Denver Post) is on board with the move. On second thought, maybe that's not a good thing.

Check out this piece from Kyle Ringo at Buffzone.com. You gotta like this Prince guy's attitude! Sounds like a big change in approach and perspective. Prince is also supposed to be the "passing game coordinator." It will be interesting to see if he rubs off on Kiesau. Biggest Question is will this translate to PRODUCTION on the field? Last spring and summer all we heard was how dominant the offensive line and run game was going to be, only to see the exact opposite during the season. Time will tell.

Markques Simas Working His Way Back?

What seemed like a closed door may be open, at least a crack. Kyle Ringo is reporting that there is an avenue for Markques Simas to work his way back into the team's good graces. Clearly his teammates are irritated with his choices but also they recognize what he brings to the team. Can he do it? Can he straighten up and fly right? Is he worth the hassle?

The state of Colorado football is unquestionably down. The facts speak for themselves. Four straight losing seasons. No road wins since who can remember when. Woeful offensive production and special teams (I use that term loosely). Top recruits leaving or not coming at all. All of this has created an uninspired, deflated fan base, at least in my neighborhood.

This piece is dated but still reflective of how some others view CU football these days as well. ONE player on the All Big XII team and NONE in the top 30 players.

Jefferson may be looking at a red-shirt this year but Simmons is definitely being counted on to bolster the Big XII's worst passing attack. Good news all around. Are you ready for some FOOTBALL?! Buffs Add Late WR Depth to 09 Class

Just came across this, courtesy Kyle Ringo/Scout. The Buffs have a (very) late addition to the 2009 recruiting class. Under the better late than never category, the newest addition to the CU wideouts is Will Jefferson of Vista del Lago HS in Moreno Valley, CA. A 6' 195 lb all purpose player who gained 2400 yards as a WR/RB/KR last year. Best deal is he is a full qualifier which means he should be available this year and ready to roll into Fall camp. Irish/ Woodrow you guys got anything more on this kid? He should be good to go right?

One has to wonder if everything is okay with Andre Simmons or is this just an opportunity to grab more depth at receiver. There is not a lot, in fact really anything substantial on the net regarding Jefferson. In fact, rivals.com doesn't even have a profile for him but he has shown some production with 2,400 yards all purpose as an athlete so he might be able to give us some of that Josh Smith game we are going to be without in 2009. QB Hirschman Looks Like the Real Deal

With the excitement of the new season upon us, it can't hurt to look at what's coming down the pike. Of course Clark Evans is a stud. Judging by the video clip attached to this link, the Buffs may just have picked up a real gem in next year's recruiting class. He appears to have a live arm (strong,accurate and good touch) but he also shows pocket presence, escapability, unlike our incumbent QB.

Alfred Williams gets the HOF shaft

Honestly, what excatly does a guy have to do to get into the College Football Hall of Fame? For every Tim Brown or Curt Warner (think Penn State RB/former Seahawk great) there are 10 Chuck Cecil's and Woodrow Lowe's. Who? Huh? If the HOF is based strictly on an individual's contributions as a COLLEGE player, then there's no way half the guys on the final list are more worthy than Alfred Williams.

Big Al was a two time CONSENSUS All-American in what was arguably THE toughest conference at the time. He was absolutely dominating; so much so that teams couldn't game plan around him. Still, Alfred gets shut out and Grant Wistrom gets in?? Yeah he was good but he wasn't any more of a significant contributor to college football than Big Al. Of course, our friends from Neb would no doubt dispute that.

Kiesau in, Helfrich Out!

Well it's official: Mark Helfrich is leaving his post as offensive guru at CU to take the the OC gig at Oregon. Also, as many of us speculated, Coach Eric Kiesau will fill the vacancy left by Hlefrich's departure.

I'm not so sure this is a bad thing other than the obvious unsettling feeling to the players that worked most closely with Helfrich. It could actually be a positive to get some new and fresh ideas into the offensive game plan.

Toney Clemons High on Buffs

Per Kyle Ringo at Buffzone, Toney Clemons was completely WOWED by his weekend trip to the Flatirons. Kid came away raving about the place, the players and the coaches. While he plans to trip to Cincinnati, he's got the Buffs solidly in the lead as his choice of transfer.

Like Coach Mac always said, you just gotta get the kids here. Once they see Boulder and the community, its love at first sight. While not available this year, Clemons would give us a definite upgrade to the talent at wideout for the foreseeable future.

Per CUBuffs.com Matt Ballenger and Colorado Football have agreed to part ways. Coach Hawkins made the announcement Friday evening.

To those of us who have been watching this situation there's no real surprise here. That said, it's disappointing to see the kid go as he really does seem to be a quality kid. Note that Hawkins implies that Bally's better days ahead are on the hardcourt with a round ball!

According to CUBUFFS.com, CU's weak link takes a hit as an already depleted receiving corp loses Chance Blackmon. Coach Hawk made the announcement public at today's practice. Apparently the kid is going home to Texas to be closer to family.

There's been a lot of recent talk from the coaching staff about the Buffs getting another wide out commit for this recruiting cycle. Does this mean we'll now be looking to fill two receiver slots? Stay tuned.
