For all you itunes users, you may want to check out the NPR Science Friday podcast. This week's edition is about baseball. Topics covered include

1) What goes on in the brain in hitting a baseball and why it is so hard

2) Pitching mechanics and stress on the arm with injury prevention. They interview the Brewers team physician who talks about a study that documented the reduced stress on the shoulder when the mound was lowered.

3) Why fans stay loyal to losing teams (they mention the Cubs and Red Sox pre-2004, but I was thinking Mariners)

4) The process of an outfielder tracking a flyball

5) The role in the seams in determining the break on offspeed pitches such as the knuckleball

Along with other stuff, I'm still listening to it right now, it's pretty interesting

*Edit* Now a Phillies fan is talking about "loving to hate our team" Where even in success the fans expect failure and love to hate on their own team... Whatever, M's still lose

A question from the ignorant

So pretty much everyone here knows of ESPN/th general media's incompetence when it comes to the sport of baseball. (Jeter being a good defender, etc) The fact that SABR figures seem to prove almost everything you hear broadcasted wrong sometimes.

As a huge baseball fan, and having played my whole life, including now at the college level, I understand the game enough to recognize this. However, I know relatively nothing about other sports.

My question would be, are they that bad with other sports too? When I hear guys get praised in the NFL/NBA etc, does the same level of ignorance apply?

Also, within baseball there is a huge Yankee/Red Sox bias. Living on the east coast, can't watch ESPN without finding out the color of Hank Steinbrenner's shit but I never hear anything about Seattle.

I guess I'm like the kid that finds out Santa isn't real, and now I want to know if that's true for the Easter Bunny and Tooth Fairy

First of all, let me just point out I am from Syracuse, NY, where there are about 5 Mariner fans in a 200 mile radius of me.

Anyways, last night I went to a local restaurant with my friends. I got a table before my friends all showed up. As I was sitting at my table waiting, I was just spacing out playing tetris on my cell phone, when I heard the group across from me talking. I wasn't sure a first if I heard right, but as I kept listening I was sure.

"Yeah see lookout landing is like that, they are really tight and have get togethers and football games and everything."

My mind sorta kinked out, waiiiit, am I really hearing people talk about LL in SYRACUSE fucking New York?

Curious, I leaned over and asked, and I was right. Two of the kids are both posters on here, and have been for some time. We talked about the website and Mariners baseball for about ten minutes before my friends showed up, both of us agreeing we sorta wish we hadn't ever found LL because we would think the FO knew what they were doing... Ignorance is bliss I guess.

It was just so weird. I would imagine they are the only other Syracuse LL readers here, and I just happened to be seated next to them in a restaurant while they started talking about the website.

Anyways, I'm terrible with names and forgot their usernames, although I wanna say one of the kids was ckel... though that's probably not spelled right.

this video may be old i'm not sure, but a friend of mine just sent it to me

http://youtube.com/watch?v=hEb3CAh_YeA

to fill the character requirement, here's a George Carlin bit of genius

"99 Things You Need to Know

There are more than 99 things you need to know

Nobody knows how many things there are to know

It's more than three

There's no way of knowing how many things you need to know

Some of the things you need to know are things you already know

Some of the things you need to know are things you only think you know

Some of the things you need to know are things you used to know and then forgot

Some of the things you need to know are things you only thought you forgot and actually still know

Some of the things you need to know are things you know but don't really know you know

Some of the things you need to know are things you don't yet know you need to know

Some of the things you think you need to know are things you probably don't really need to know

Some of the things you need to know are things known only by people you don't know

Some of the things you need to know are things nobody knows

Some of the things you need to know are things that are unknowable

Some of the things you need to know are things that can only be imagined

At anytime the list of things you need to know can be abruptly suspended

Now you know."

and to those of you who don't celebrate it, happy holidays!

hope everyone gets what they wanted, has a safe holiday and eats a lot tonight!

300 Character fact

The Polyphemus moth (Antheraea polyphemus) is a member of the Saturniidae family, or giant silk moths. It is a tan colored moth, with an average wingspan of 6 inches (15 cm). The most notable feature of the moth is its large, purplish eye spots on its two hindwings. The eye spots are where it gets its name - from the Greek myth of the Cyclops Polyphemus. The caterpillar of the Polyphemus moth can eat 86,000 times it's weight at birth in a little less than two months.

Last night, I was watching my local Syracuse Skycheifs take on the Columbus Clippers. The starting catcher for the Clippers? Ex-Mariner Ben Davis

Flashback, he was huuge, and did jack shit hitting

almost like I remember....

Jeff's edit - 300 Character Fact of the Day: Pandit Vishnu Narayan Bhatkhande (August 10, 1860 ? September 19, 1936) was an Indian classical musician widely acclaimed to have brought in a renaissance in Indian music. He reorganized the Ragas in Hindustani music into the currently used Thaat scale from the previous classifications of Raag (male), Ragini (female) and Putra (children) ragas.
