The Phinsider Ask yourself some questions ...

So Jeff Ireland is terrible and nobody wants to play for us >> Thanks for that Ryan Clark who didn't get the money offered he was looking for when he came down on a visit .. or the red carpet treatment.

Peter King who writes an article about how great Matt Flynn will be then says the Dolphins are dysfunctional organization after Flynn chooses the Seahawks. Maybe this is why he is a writer and not a GM?

Then our old friend Joey Porter piles on the NFL network saying how terrible Ireland is as a GM not because of his issues but because of Dez Bryant. BTW he was terrible on the network and didn't even know where to look when speaking ... just saying

The only thing that has surprised me is that nobody has called Channing Crowder to ask him how he feels. Its like calling everyone you have done wrong or made look bad over your life and and got them to speak about you. Talk about piling on. Its not even a fair fight.

The Phinsider What I have learned because of Peyton Manning

Lets be honest this Peyton Manning ordeal has been draining. We have been considered favourites to now not even being considered (according to sources). Its all a game of high stakes poker being played and if we lose I for one will not be mad, not even a little bit.

The Phinsider It is what it is .........

It is what it is ............

While the fate of the front office and coaching staff will come down soon I wanted to put my 2 cents in about the direction I would like this team to take.  I for one would prefer to see Sparano stay although I would not be very disapointed if he got fired,  it is what it is and the Dolphins didn't live up to expectations this season.   If heads have to roll because of it I can understand the logic although I would prefer not to be so.

On the positive side of things our defense is young and talented.  We pretty much have everyone locked up for next season so I would be for resigning the big man Soliai and seeing how we do ... this is under the notion that Nolan is back,  because if a new defense is put in place we may have a lot more needs than we know of.

The problem of the offense is complex and I'm sure matty will break it all down in the up coming months but like I said before here are my 2 cents ... okay maybe more than 2

The Phinsider Giving the FO there credit and Pennington please stay ...

Many times I have read how the FO has made mistakes by either drafting players or letting certain players go i.e Pat White and Matt Roth to name a few and what a terriible job they have done but on a day after a win where we had three QB's come in the game to win, they have cleary earned there pay cheque.

Mocking The Draft Mock Draft 1.0

This is my first Mock draft and I have things going a bit different than most but I still think it is within reason.  My difference simply put that I don't see two DT going in the top 3 as teams don't spend that much money on that position so like last year I feel it will be QB than OT off the board.

Now this maybe different than most so I will explain my views in comments if you differ lol  This is my first attempt so take it easy on me.

Things will probably change as will needs with FA coming up this Friday.

The Phinsider What really needs to be addressed ...

Chad Pennington, Jason Ferguson, Joey Porter and Jason Taylor

Those were our captains of our 2009 Miami Dolphins and by the looks of this offseason we won't have one returning captain playing for us in 2010.

So how do go about having a team with success without having vetern leadership on the team?  I don't think it is possible and IMO I think this was a big part in why the team lost the final three games at the end of the season.  We have all heard about Porter's antics late in the season and the problems that caused for the team.

The Phinsider Phillip Merling .. our new SOLB?

I just read an interesting article about the Dolphins needs coming into the draft and we could possilby be looking for at the #12 spot.  This article did a great job of breaking down each position and also added some thought to some of the other positions.  (can't get the link to work with my computer but it is an article on Dave Hyde's Blog with the Sun Sentinel)

The one I found most interesting was the comment on Merling moving from DE to OLB.  He has been asked to lose 10lbs by the mini-camps coming up, this would make sense if he were to move to the OLB spot.  This move would actually make a lot of sense as it would be a better way to get the proper use out of Merling.  With Starks and Langford's play both being more consistent at the DE position and with the likes of McDaniles waiting behind, the DE rotation wouldn't lose all that much.

Here is the piece from the article discussing the possible move for Merling:

Whilst the ends remain a strong suit with excellent work turned in by Randy Starks and Kendall Langford along with solid assistance from the terrific 7th round trade for Tony McDaniel, the future remains a question mark for Philip Merling who has all the talent in the world but hasn’t put it together consistently. Asked to lose 10lbs before mini-camps, it looks as though the Dolphins might be planning to shift him to SOLB. Remember, at Clemson he was an explosive 4-3 end with great ability to get to the perimeter and the sort of feet you’d expect from a decent tight end. He moves forward and backward really well, gets out of trouble on his feet, but lacks the power to consistently drive big tackles backward.

He even played a couple of pre-season games as a rookie at SOLB but it was the 3-4 alignment that got the better of him rather than any lack of physical ability. Now, with two years under his belt in the system, it’s not inconceivable that he drops the required 10lbs by mini camps and another 10 by training camp and regains the explosion we saw in the ACC back out on the strong side at around 270lbs. If that happens as I suspect it might, you’re also freeing up another spot for a pure 3-4 defensive end.

We have seen this move with Roth before with decent success.  IMO this would be a good move if Merling could shed the lbs as when he does get on the field he is usually around the ball making plays and with the added playing time he could get maybe he can have a bigger impact in the game.

Do you guys think this would be a good fit? or am I just crazy? haha

The Phinsider Was Gibril Wilson really the problem?

We have all seen the plays that Gibril didn't make the season that made us lose sleep after the games screaming "I could have made that play!!!!!!!"  BUT do those handful of plays make Gibril Wilson the scapegoat for our terrible defense this season?  does it mean we should cut him due to his poor coverage skills?

We all know that football is the ultimate team game and it takes a team to be great especiallyon defense.  So what do we know about Gibril Wilson other than those boneheaded plays?

First his stat line actually isn't that bad.  His 94 tackles had him 6th in league in the FS position while on the other hand his coverage skills stats (INTs, PassDef) were in the bottom half of the league for his position.  Doesn't paint the whole picture as I couldn't find out how the team defense was in QB pressures but I'm going to make the assumption that we were also in the middle of the pack at best.

Please note: We were T3rd in sacks but that doesn't show if they were coverage sacks and also note the hated Jets were T18th in sacks?!?! but had the best defense in the league.  What is more important? the sacks? or the constant pressure? hmmmmm

The Phinsider 2009 Dolphins Linebackers. Are they really that bad?

Tony Sparano would never come out and say it, actually it is his policy to never speak bad about his team, but how do you think they really feel about this current linebacker group?

Do you think they are ready to start all over? bring in more talent in FA and the draft?

We all are screaming YES but do they feel the same way?

We will never know the answer to that question until the NFL Draft and FA period is done.  In the meantime, I wanted to show how you can consider our LB's play has been this season by simply putting there numbers against other teams that play the similar 3-4 defense we do.   Please note I only used the starters from each team.

The Phinsider Still dreaming of the Playoffs!!!!

Today's game was defeintly a heartbreaker but thanks to a couple other heartbreakers (OAK beating DEN) around the league we are still in decent position with regards to this whole playoff mess.   I know talking playoffs isn't what many of you want to hear,  Houston should be our number one consern but I think its always good to know what else is going on around the league so we know our possiblities

I'm not one to talk about where we could be as that will come during the offseason but more of where we can be and what it will take to make it happen.  If we can beat the Houston in a week from today we will have a great shot at making it.  This will be a really tough game. PERIOD but I believe at home with a good crowd this team can do it.

First things first we are going to need some help but looking at the games where the help is needed it actually looks really good in our favor.  Each team we are cheering against might be the underdog going into the game BAL and DEN when they lineup next week.  So below is the breakdown of the games still to come.

The Phinsider I know it's early but let's talk PLAYOFFS!!!!

While we have finally reached that time of year when playoffs can be brought up ... is it too early? sure it is but it never hurts to dream a little!!

To make the playoffs we would have to probably go 5-1 down the stretch which is no easy task but still very possible.  The benefit is that we have a great schedule in trying to make the playoffs as we play a few teams that are ahead of us in the standings which factors in two ways ... those being 1. we don't have to hope for other teams to beat them .. we control our destiny in a small way.  2. if we beat them we also have the tiebreaker in the WC spot.

The Phinsider 3 Up & 3 Down Against the Pats

The season is already a success!!!!!

The Dolphins have handed Joba DaRyan two loses these season and from now on regardless of win or lose you can't wipe the smile off my face for this season.   While I'm hoping for playoffs (a win this weekend puts us only one game behind the Pats) it may just turn out to be a 8-8 season or 12-4 but who knows ... I'm OK with it now that JESTs chances going down due to our two wins over them.  Now don't get me wrong I want to win every single game and get just as angry about the blown wins and missed opportunities this season but to beat the Jets twice in one season makes it successful PERIOD hahaha.

DAMN IT FEELS GOOD TO SWEEP THE JEST!!! NOW IF ONLY WE COULD DO IT IN THE PLAYOFFS!!! HAHA

With that being said I wanted to go over what I thought were the top 3 things going good and bad for the Dolphins in the upcoming crucial game against the Pats.

The Phinsider Success For Chad Henne

So many things are made of what success is for a rookie errr 2 year QB.  What is success to you?  Is it Wins? Completion %? Low TO Ratio?

This may come in all different forms but if he is going to be our QB of the future I think we are going to have to live by Bill Parcells saying "If he doesn't bit as a puppy he isn't going to bit"  which really means that if he doesn't show us anything in the next 13 games we will know in some shape or form.

To get a better understanding of what is expected out of Chad Henne I'm going to breakdown some of the elite QB's rookie seasons and kind of put an average of them and use that as the baseline or target for him to reach this season.  IMO if he is just a bit under that is fine as you will see the QB group I am using are that of an elite group.

The Phinsider Why the Sky ISN'T Falling

It is never easy seeing a game like we all witnessed on Monday night or this past Sunday, but this is what got me intereseted in the NFL in the first place...anything can happen.  Just when you think you have seen it all something crazy and different happens like the Bronco's last second win in Week 1. what happened on MNF or Favre's last second TD throw and of coarse the many Marino miracle comebacks that we were so fortunate to watch.

So with this site being my support group for getting through the rough days that follow a lose I am going to do my part and point out the POSITIVES of what we can get to look towards.

So for starters Remember last season when the Bills were leading the division to start the season at 4-1 or when the Jets caught fire and were SB bound only to flame out and get caught by the Dolphins .. AAAHHHH great memories.  While this season will be much more difficult to make such a comeback at least this year we will really see where the teams depth is at in all positions and really understand where the team is going in the future.

The Phinsider Talking Heads & Possible W-L

After starting to type a respose to BigReys post it got so long so I decided to post my own with a couple additional points for concirderation. I personally don't care for all the people guessing whether its Mel Kiper or Boomer or Ditka. I don't think any of them have ever been close to perfect on drafts or preseason rankings. It is a common trend among the Talking Heads to pick favorites who they all think will be Super Bowl contenders, remember we were once that team in '06 and the Cardinals were that team for 5 years straight with never coming close. Really who would have thought the Cardinals would have been that close to becoming SB Champs before last season started !!! Football has always been the toughest thing to guess whom will do what with all the moving parts involved. The best way to look at things is like this ... last season is well LAST SEASON so I don't think you can look at that and see what the future holds, just ask the '08 Dolphins. The thing is football is different each season as can be seen by the losing SB team to miss the playoffs 6 of the past 7 seasons. How can you be that close and then never be the same? ? ? Now onto the Phins ... The Dolphins have the makeup to make a great run this season with better depth at the OLB, CB, WR and OL. The addition of JT IMO is largley being overlooked and I think that will lead to a better pass rush, how much better is still to be seen. Our current weakness is probably our Secondary on D and that doesn't bode well for us looking at the Schedule where we play some of the best QB's in the league with Manning, Rivers, Brees, Ryan and Brady x2. What will this all leads to is yet to be determinded as like I said so many things can happen So really taking a look into the schedule we could end up anywhere between 6-12 wins this season. A 6 win season means: *we split to both Buffalo and the Jets *loses against the Chargers *split the NFC South *lose all the games to the AFC South *lose both to the Patriots. A 12 win season means: *sweep Divison except split with the Pats *sweep NFC South *split AFC South *lose to either the Steelers or Chargers Both of these seem really possible depending on how things workout. With everything being in the South this season and travel not being to crazy I can see more of a 10-12 wins ... Your Thoughts?

The Phinsider A Super Fans Look Into the First Week of Camp !!!!!!

I would consider my self a diehard dolphins fan .. so much that I even try to mix it up with the likes of some of you guys.  With that being said sometimes the downfall of being a diehard  is you think you are seeing things that really aren't there at this time of year (ie A playoff team in '07 that went 1-15).  So coming off the great season that was last year and that being followed up by what I would call one of the best offseasons I have been a part of I am at a alltime high as a phins fan in terms of pride maybe since Marino has left.

Nucks Misconduct Testing the Canucks Faithful

Over the years it has been easy to give up on this team.   Whether it be the late season clapses of last season, '03 regular season & post season.

So what makes this team so different ? ? ?

Its simple: LEADERSHIP

Since '94 I have never felt more comfortable in our team in the Playoffs.  With such players like Luongo, Mitchell, Kesler, Bieksa I always find myself at ease even after a big loss like we had in Game 2.  Their were many highs & lows throughout this past season yet when it was all finished we did what some people thought was impossible in January .. win the NorthWest Division.

This team has shown time and time again that it is capable of doing what every fan wants "win a championship" due to its attitude and leadership within that locker room.  I am not saying this will happen with this team this season but damn it feels nice to not "know" we are playing above our heads and will be out of the playoffs soon.  This team is capable of sooo much more and to all of you waiting the ride is just beginning.

The Phinsider Addressing the CB ... similar to WR'08?

Last season as the draft was approaching we were a team with plenty of holes, most notably at WR.  We had just acuired Wilford in FA and still had holdovers in Ginn Jr and the hero Camarillo.

It was thought by many including myself that the position would be addressed in the first 3 rounds but as each round passed another position was addressed.  The position later was addressed not with a late pick but with a UDFA and as the season progressed we made a great move in acuiring London.

Our current CB position brings many similar things to the WR position of last year aswell.  We added a FA Green (Wilford), we have a former 1st round pick J.Allen (Ginn Jr.) and we also have a unknown in J.Thomas (Camarillo).  The only real difference between the two is that we have a solid veteran CB in W.Allen that we didn't have at WR last year.

So my question is simple .... Will we address the CB position similar to the WR position last season?

While I personally think the CB spot will be addressed at some point in the draft I'm not sure if it will be as high as we are thinking.

The Phinsider Trading Joey Porter .... or someone else???

Over the past couple of weeks I have seen many comments calling for a trade of Joey Porter.  From what I have read everyone's thoughts are to sell high and try and get a possible 1st rd or 2nd rd draft pick and possibly more. If that was the case I would be all for it but my thoughts are this would likely be impossible for a couple different reasons.

I have been listening to Pat Kirwan on NFL Sirius Radio and the former GM takes calls with questions like this all the time and he always answers it by asking two things .. 1) who will replace his production and 2) who would be interested in trading for him.  After that you can find out if that team is willing to make to pay the price you ask for.

The Phinsider The Defensive - FA and the Draft

The overhaul on our defense may be signifcant or not at all this offseason with the FA's on this side of the ball and the possiblity of picking up new players in the upcoming draft.

So after looking into the Rzayo24 great post of the Offseason for Dummies and Little Nickys 21 post on "Floaters and Sinkers"  I decided to takie a closer look at the FA's available and the 1st Round Draft Defensive talent available in our spot.  Then before I could finsih writing this post Matty I wrote a great article on FA Buzz.  He brings up a lot of topics I was going over in a much better way haha and I have added on with our possible draft moves.

So its fair to assume the Trifecta is mulling over ideas to get an improved pass rush with an added talent at OLB, improved depth in secondary, get younger at NT and look for a replacement for Crowder if he isn't retained.  There is always a possiblity they do see a backup we have as a starter and we wont know that well until the draft is finsihed of coarse.

The Phinsider O-Line Coach Maser has been Fired

ESPN's Chris Mortensen is reporting that the Dolphins have let go O-Line Coach Mike Maser.

I am a little shocked over this move as I didn't expect anyone to get fired on the Dolphins staff this offseason but after looking at the production of this unit in the base offense you can understand why this move was made. They must have really not liked what they saw on tape when they were finished evaluating the talent.

I wonder how much of this also has to do with Sparano being a former O-Line Coach and really expecting more out of our talent.

Does anyone know who could possibly replace him for the Dolphins?

**UPDATE by Matty I**:  Despite some thinking that Tony Sparano, a former OL coach, might look to take on those duties as well, the Dolphins will indeed hire a replacement.  As "thatonedude" pointed out in the comments below, the early front-runner to replace Maser is Giants assistant offensive line coach Dave DeGuglielmo.

The Phinsider Taking the Next Step to Becoming "Elite"

Taking the next step is what we are all hoping to witness next season.  To become that elite team right up there with the likes of the Colts, Patriots and Steelers every year.  Although a winning season next year still will not put the Dolphins in that catergorie it has to be done to get there.  Tony Sparano said this is the hardest step to take in all of sports .. and you need to look no further than Browns, Jets and Cowboys to see that trying to hard to achieve this will sometimes set you back.  So what do the Dolphins have to do to get there? We all know the Trifecta has a plan ready to put in action to get us to the top of the mountain but do you see it the same way? I know I would never argue with what they are doing.

So here is a small breakdown of what we already got .. I know many of you already know all of this but it might help with the bigger picture in seeing what we got and where we are going.

The Phinsider WR Depth - Do We or Don't We Add a Star ???

This seems to be a hot topic of discussion for everyone so I thought I would do a breakdown of this season stats and players and then add my bias opinion about what I think should be done.

2008 Regular Season Receiveing Stats

Ted Ginn Jr. 56  790  14.1  64  2
Greg Camarillo 55  613  11.1  33 2
Davone Bess 54  554  10.3  37 1
Anthony Fasano 34  454  13.4  24 7
Ronnie Brown 33  254    7.7  39 0
David Martin 31  450  14.5  61 3
Ricky Williams 29  219    7.6  47 1
Patrick Cobbs 19  275  14.5  80 2
Lousaka Polite   6    24    4.0    9 0
Brandon London   3    30  10.0  14 0
Ernest Wilford   3    25    8.3  15 0
Joey Haynos   2    22 11.0  19 1

Overview of the Stats

When looking over these stats a couple of things pop out at you right away.  All starting three WR have over 50 catches and 3 more (2 TE and 1RB) with 30 or more as well.  I think this shows you that Pennington throws the ball to whomever is open and doesn't lock on one receiver ... EVER.  It was said many times that he took what was given to him, and this proves that and that is why he had his BEST season ever as a QB.

Overview of Play

Ted Ginn Jr. play continued to get better as the season went on.  He played better at home and in the second half of games.  He contributed 4 TD's in total all came when either the game was tied or we were behind.  He had only one game with over 100 yrds receiving though and had 9 games with 4+ catches.  Overall a very good second season but most of us will only remember him not being able to hold onto the ball against Baltimore.  Looking forward he will have the same QB for the first time in his career and have a full offseason to learn the offense even more,  in turn this should improve his speed in games and chemistry with Pennington.  Year 3 is usually a breakout year for WR and I look forward to seeing that next season.

GREG CAMARILLO

Started first 11 games until knee injury against the Patriots in Week 12.  Was leading the team in rec and yards at the time.

Season Highlights

Week 5 - 6rec 68yrds 1 TD rec

Week 7 - 6rec 74yrds

Week 9 - 11rec 111yrds

Week 12 - 6rec 75yrds 1 TD rec

+9 catches in the 4th quarter of games compared to all other quarters

56.4% of catches went for first downs

Had 4+ rec in 9 of the 12 games he played

Areas of Concern

Longest rec only went for 33 yrds

Impact of Injured knee

Overview of Play

Camarillo was playing the best of all WR on the team before he was injured.  He is QB friendly and always seems to find the right spot to be.  He signed a new contract just a week or two before getting hurt.  Overall he is a very consitant WR the only knock on his game would be he doens't scare you,  He has said he would like to be ready to go by Training Camp .. this is his first major injury so we will have to wait and see how he responds from this adversity.

DEVONE BESS

Was signed to the Dolphins as an undrafted rookie he made the team as the 3rd WR.  He also served as the teams punt returner.

Season Highlights

Weeks 12 - 17 he lead the team in rec with 35 while filling in for Greg Camarillo

53.7% of his catches went for 1st downs

5 rec for +20yrds

Areas of Concern

Not many mistakes made by the rookie other than the 1 fumble against the Chargers

Overview of Play

Devone came out of nowhere to become our 3rd WR and then filled in nicely when Greg went down with an injury.  His overall play was great and he should show great impovement this offseason working with the same offense and QB.  Also with some extra work in the training room the sky is the limit for Devone.

DO WE OR DON'T WE ADD A STAR ?????

When you look at the WR stats nothing really blows you away.  Devone and Greg both seemed to play more of a possesion receiver role when they were starting and Ginn Jr was always the threat that teams had to pay attention to.  Lots of you want to add a Boldin, TJ or possibly adding Harvin in the draft.  If you look at our team and what we are trying to do to win games .. run the ball and play good defense I guess you could say these aren't bad numbers for our WR.  Do they need to be improved? Sure ... but remember the following things .. Pennington didn't come to the team until August and it was a new offense the team was learning.  This shows why the teams passing game started picking up as the season progressed and I think next year it will continue through the whole season.   Please also remember that Pennington isn't Kurt Warner, Peyton Manning or anything like that so why add someone to that area if he doesn't fit the talent of our current team.  If we continue to move forward and letting OUR players progress we should be alright in my mind.

If you think we should add a star tell me why it would be a good fit for our team and talent ... Does it meet Penningtons strengths and is it worth putting the extra money in this postion over the O-line, Linebackers and Secondary.

The Phinsider Putting On the GM Hat

I guess now that the season is over and after lasting one more week than any of us expected this time last year we can now to start to look ahead.

The funny thing is I`m actually still pumped up about the Dolphins and what they will bring to the table next season.  If you have a chance listen to Sparano`s last new conference of this season and it will get you going .. getting Bigger, Faster, Stronger and telling all the players to be ready for the offseason workout program and that they are going to look under every stone.  I have never been so pleased to hear that .. gone are the days when we would think we are a QB away from a Super Bowl and we would trade picks to get nothing in return because our O-Line was always trash to begin with.

On a postive note we are heading into the offseason with no change in starting QB, offensive or defensive co-ordinator.  The players should get better in the system so even with a tougher schedule we should be ready.

Here are my top 3 areas of concern that the Dolphins need to address this offseason.

  1. Depth on O-Line and D-Line.  More important the Guard positions, we got manhandled by the Ravens yesterday
  2. Defensive Linebacker.  Probably another Linebacker to compliment Joey Porter - Charlie Anderson experiment failed.  Lack of pass rush hurt us over and over again this season.
  3.  Secondary Playmaker - I do like are secondary and they would become much better with a pass rush but I don`t see us keeping both Goodman and Bell - one will be lost in my estimation.

So thats my take what are yours?

The Phinsider 2008 - What a Year for Phins Fans !!!!

I reflected back on the year and realized what a great year this was for phins fans.

Take a look at the series of events that happend in favor of the dolphins this year.

  1. Hiring of Tony Sparano
  2. Patriots lose Super Bowl keeping the '72 Dolphins as the only undefeated team ever
  3. the overhaul of the Roster begins .....
  4. The Draft !!!!! brings people like Jake Long and trades for Anthony Fasano
  5. Preseason starts and then Chad Pennington falls in our lap
  6. The season starts slow but when pushed this phins push back finishing the season on a 9-1 streak .....
  7. AFC EAST CHAMPIONS!!!!!!!!!!!!

What 2009 has for us could be anything but looking back over one year I haven't been happier.  This season will end in 2009 and who knows when it will end .. one game at a time .. GO PHINS !!!!!!!

WHAT DO YOU THINK IS THE BIGGEST MOMENT FOR THE DOLPHINS IN '08 ?
