Still dreaming of the Playoffs!!!!

Today's game was defeintly a heartbreaker but thanks to a couple other heartbreakers (OAK beating DEN) around the league we are still in decent position with regards to this whole playoff mess. I know talking playoffs isn't what many of you want to hear, Houston should be our number one consern but I think its always good to know what else is going on around the league so we know our possiblities

I'm not one to talk about where we could be as that will come during the offseason but more of where we can be and what it will take to make it happen. If we can beat the Houston in a week from today we will have a great shot at making it. This will be a really tough game. PERIOD but I believe at home with a good crowd this team can do it.

First things first we are going to need some help but looking at the games where the help is needed it actually looks really good in our favor. Each team we are cheering against might be the underdog going into the game BAL and DEN when they lineup next week. So below is the breakdown of the games still to come.

WEEK 16 WILL DECIDE OUR PLAYOFF FUTURE

Please note I am making the assumption that we can beat both the Steelers and Texans. These are going to be very close and tough games. As I'm sure we all know one loss and we are done but if we win we would still give ourselves a chance.

This next week will be the toughest on the schedule for each team ahead of us in the current standings:

JAC v. NE - This game can go either way really and we will still have a shot. If NE wins it will give the Dolphins the upper hand in the Wild Card and if JAC wins it will leave open the possiblity of winning the division. I'm not sure who to root for in this scenario as the WildCard might be the best option we have although I would always prefer another home game and a AFC East Division Championship.

BAL v. PIT - this game is probably the most important game for the Dolphins chances of securing a WC spot. I like this game for the Dolphins simply because the Steelers are at home and just had a great win today over GB, they will be pissed and are still hoping for a shot at making the playoffs as well. Having BAL lose would give the Dolphins a shot in the arm they need as they will most likely have the tiebreaker over BAL when it is all said and done (tiebreaker would be strenght of victory).

DEN v. PHI - this game has a lot riding on it for each team so it will be intersting to see how it all plays out. This game is also a home game for our rooting team and to top it off PHI is still in a battle for the division so I doubt they will be shutting it down despite the fact they already locked up a playoff spot today. If DEN loses this game it will open the chance for the Dolphins to beat them out for a WC spot. The tiebreaker would go to stregth of victory and at this time it is still very close with DEN holding a slight edge over the Dolphins.

TEN v. SD - the truth is we need a TEN win in this game. Both DEN and BAL have beaten the Chargers this year and if our tiebreaker goes down to stength of victory we will need all the help we can get. The truth is TEN cannot catch us in the standings if we win out as there is no way there will only be 2 teams at 9-7 .. so in this scenario we would have the tiebreaker on Conferance record. GO TITIANS !!!

Other games that matter for strength of scedule in Week 16- CAR v. NYG

Week 17 games to watch that will help determine SOS - JAC v. CLE and CIN v. NYJ

So to break it down all we need is a loss by the Broncos or Ravens next week to really make things matter.

I can't wait til Sunday ... we are going to need a huge crowd to make it happen for the Dolphins next Sunday against the Texans.

Two Years Ago ... Where were you?

December 16th, 2007 - forever known as the day the Dolphins Frachise was saved from the possible 0-16 season.

We all know and remember the story to well, the Dolphins were the laughing stock of the league and not expected to even win a game after starting the season 0-13. Everyone was piling on from friends, to announcers and even sports radio broadcaster Jim Rome had a campaign going on but on this day it all had come to a complete hault.

My Story:

At this point I personally had stopped watching games with friends and stayed home watching the games by myself, I live far away from Miami so I have always had the Sunday Ticket to enjoy all Dolphin games. It was the time of year for spiced rum and eggnog so that is what I had decided to drink and put back enough to make the game managable as I had almost lost all hope. The game wasn't pretty ... in fact we still even tried to give this game away *thank you Matt Stover for the missed FG's* So by the time Greg Camarillo had caugth the ball and was breaking towards the endzone I probably was jumping as high in the air as I ever had time and time again ... relieved and exhausted the phone calls came in from my brother and friends, mostly laughing at how excited i was over 1 win but I didn't care they would never know what as fans that season was like, it just felt so damn good to get that one win.

I can admit I didn't bust into tears like Wayne but I was close, like most of you here I live and die with the Dolphins and that is the season I never want to go through again. Its at this time that we should remind ourselves how lucky we are to have such a great organization to cheer for and that now we are talking PLAYOFFS two seasons in a row since that infamous season.

So my question to you is ... Where were you? what were you doing? Were you alone like myself drowning my sorrows or were you with other people or even at the game? Lets here it because that is a day as a phin fan I will never forget.

While we have finally reached that time of year when playoffs can be brought up ... is it too early? sure it is but it never hurts to dream a little!!

To make the playoffs we would have to probably go 5-1 down the stretch which is no easy task but still very possible. The benefit is that we have a great schedule in trying to make the playoffs as we play a few teams that are ahead of us in the standings which factors in two ways ... those being 1. we don't have to hope for other teams to beat them .. we control our destiny in a small way. 2. if we beat them we also have the tiebreaker in the WC spot.

I'm going to breakdown the records and show the chances so we know what games are important each week. I am also going to make the assumption that we go 5-1 down the stretch aswell that the lose is either against the Pats or Titans lol

Today's standings has 5 teams ahead of us in the Wild Card Standings (top 2 getting the spots) those current teams are:

Steelers 6-4 *
Jags 6-4 *
Broncos 6-4
Texans 5-4 *
Ravens 5-5
Dolphins 5-5

*teams Dolphins still play

As pointed out before we play the Steelers, Jags and Texans still so victories in those games would be important for things to go our way.

Looking at the other teams schedules:

Steelers - even with the lose to KC they still have a great shot at the playoffs. They have the easiest schedule of all teams. There toughest games will be the two against the Ravens, the Packers and the finally against the Phins. A split with the Ravens and a loss to either the Packers or the phins would give them the same record and the Dolphins the tiebreaker.

Jags - most important game will be the head-to-head match as this will even the records. If that happens we would still be allowd one loss if the Jags dropped one to either the Colts, Pats, Texans, or 49ers which is very possible if not probable.

Broncos - they have a tough road ahead of them with games still against the Colts, Eagles and Giants. They have to win one of these games to stay in the playoff race. The only problem is that the Dolphins do not play the Broncos and they have shown they can beat good teams as they did earlier this season ... they control there fate although it will be a very tough road ahead.

Texans - they have what maybe the best path to the playoffs. If they beat there division they are basically in the playoffs .. if they lose one that will give the Dolphins some room (being able to lose a game) there toughest challenge will be the Colts and the Patriots who they play in the last week.

Ravens - they have two tough games against the Steelers and if they can win one of those games they have a really good shot as there next toughest opp. is the Packers. They finish off with easy games against the Lions, Raiders, and Bears. It will either be the Steelers or Ravens taking one spot that is for sure.

Please notice that I didn't make mention to winning the AFC East Title. The main reason is that we can not control our destiny to winning this as we will need lots of help to achieve this feat again. While we still do need help to make the playoffs the odds IMO are greater for a WC berth than a Division title. If and that is a big IF the Pats lose to both us and the Saints we would still have to probably win out to make this possible as the Pats schedule is much easier with only two tough games down the stretch against the Jags and Texans. Can it happen? I hope so but right now my main concern is focusing on what is more probable lol

The season is already a success!!!!!

The Dolphins have handed Joba DaRyan two loses these season and from now on regardless of win or lose you can't wipe the smile off my face for this season. While I'm hoping for playoffs (a win this weekend puts us only one game behind the Pats) it may just turn out to be a 8-8 season or 12-4 but who knows ... I'm OK with it now that JESTs chances going down due to our two wins over them. Now don't get me wrong I want to win every single game and get just as angry about the blown wins and missed opportunities this season but to beat the Jets twice in one season makes it successful PERIOD hahaha.

DAMN IT FEELS GOOD TO SWEEP THE JEST!!! NOW IF ONLY WE COULD DO IT IN THE PLAYOFFS!!! HAHA

With that being said I wanted to go over what I thought were the top 3 things going good and bad for the Dolphins in the upcoming crucial game against the Pats.

3 UP

1. The Defense Showing Up - it finally showed up at the end of the game when it needed too. To me this is a huge thing moving on during the season. I'm not going to go into this too much as we all know the whore stories of the Colts, Saints and what was almost another disaster in the first Jets game (thank you offense for the bailout). Sometimes a small victory for the Defense like this will get a team straightened out for the long haul ... I F!#%%^ HOPE SO!!! as I don't think my heart can take another second half that we have had for the past three games.

Hoping to see some more of this again on Sunday!!!! Brings tears to my eyes.

2. Ted Ginn Jr. - a whipping boy since Day 1 as a Dolphin he has finally showed what he can bring to the table in the return game. I like what I'm hearing from Dolphins camp as he can still work his way back on the starting lineup.

"Anyone of these guys can get out of where they are by being consistent on the practice field... Consistency isn't one day, two days. I need to see it for awhile," Sparano said.

Two runs isn't going to change a thing and I agree with Tony on this one. He has been great already this season in the first game against the Jets with the long bomb catch and followed that up with the worst game of his career against the Saints. Keep working hard Teddy and us fans and "your family" will be proud of you once you are running past DB's on a regular basis as a starting #1 WR.

3. Pats Rush Defense - Matty already touched on this subject so take a look. My eyes see these stats and numbers and see a great day for the R& R Express. Our strength on Offense v. there weakness on Defense ... I'll take it on any given Sunday.

1. The BYE Week - this will give the Pats more time to relax and be ready for the Dolphins whom I'm sure they have been waiting to play at home since last years embarrassment. Gillette Stadium is never an easy place to play in the first place. The Patriots have won there last 6 games following a BYE week ... not a statistic I like to see.

2. NE Pass Game V. Miami Secondary - this is also gone over in Matty's article. I'm hoping that our offense can keep the ball similar to the Colts game and that will limit the amount of chances Brady has. The other thing that I am losing sleep over is Sean Smith trying to tackle Wes Welker in open space ... this is something I hope I don't see to often on Sunday. Overall this may turnout better than the numbers show as like last year the secondary took time to gel so I'm crossing my fingers for the same scenario.

3. A)Turnovers - Devon Bess, Anthony Fasano and Chad Henne please do not turnover the ball ... I repeat do not turnover the football. While Henne has been good compared to the other two I thought I would throw him in there due to the play of New England's secondary the past couple games. Bess and Fasano have had problems all year so if they can have a clean game I like our chances.

3.B) Preferential Treatment - Let's also hope Tom doesn't get the preferential treatment as well. He has had 6 Roughing the Passer fouls called for him this season and about half of those were very questionable. Let's put it this way ... Even his teammates are calling him out "Take Your Skirt Off Tom" by none other than Rodney Harrision haha

To end it off I think this is a very winnable game that will be decided in the fourth quarter .. let's just hope the defense from the last three minutes in the forth of the last game. Also I just picked up a new Joey Porter White with a hat to match just in time for the game .. can't wait til Sunday!!!

Success For Chad Henne

So many things are made of what success is for a rookie errr 2 year QB. What is success to you? Is it Wins? Completion %? Low TO Ratio?

This may come in all different forms but if he is going to be our QB of the future I think we are going to have to live by Bill Parcells saying "If he doesn't bit as a puppy he isn't going to bit" which really means that if he doesn't show us anything in the next 13 games we will know in some shape or form.

To get a better understanding of what is expected out of Chad Henne I'm going to breakdown some of the elite QB's rookie seasons and kind of put an average of them and use that as the baseline or target for him to reach this season. IMO if he is just a bit under that is fine as you will see the QB group I am using are that of an elite group.

So this is what we should see if Chad Henne is on the right track to becoming a "elite" QB in the NFL. IMO this doesn't seem to be to much to ask for. The one thing that we are going to have to understand as a fanbase is that he will throw INT's and make mistakes but if the ball is going in the endzone and at the end of the day we win around 6-8 of our remaining games I will personally be impressed. Patience is going to be needed by all of us and hopefully by next season we won't be begging to have Chad Pennington back ...although I wish he was still our QB at this very moment :(

Why the Sky ISN'T Falling

It is never easy seeing a game like we all witnessed on Monday night or this past Sunday, but this is what got me intereseted in the NFL in the first place...anything can happen. Just when you think you have seen it all something crazy and different happens like the Bronco's last second win in Week 1. what happened on MNF or Favre's last second TD throw and of coarse the many Marino miracle comebacks that we were so fortunate to watch.

So with this site being my support group for getting through the rough days that follow a lose I am going to do my part and point out the POSITIVES of what we can get to look towards.

So for starters Remember last season when the Bills were leading the division to start the season at 4-1 or when the Jets caught fire and were SB bound only to flame out and get caught by the Dolphins .. AAAHHHH great memories. While this season will be much more difficult to make such a comeback at least this year we will really see where the teams depth is at in all positions and really understand where the team is going in the future.

Positives looking forward are pretty easy to pick out.

Merling and Langford at DE position .. this guys are looking good, stopping the run and creating a pass rush.
Smith & Davis. Although Smith did get beat on the deep ball I'm pretty sure that was on Bell who was suppose to have the over the top help, a great catch regardless. Davis made a nice play on the ball on an out throw which caught my attention ... now lets see a pick from this group.
R & R Express. Ronnie and Ricky have look amazing so far this season and while I'm sure we knew how talented they are its great to see it on the field.
Special Teams Coverage !!!!!! Darren Sproles didn't get a sniff at the open field.
We got a Turnover !!!! ok maybe this isn't a positive but I had to put it in there haha

Areas of Improvement. Simple Enough as we all have seen this a hundred times

Linebacker play has been terrible this season in both coverage and rushing the passer. WTF has happend to what once was our strongest link on our team???? I'm still confused by there play
Oline play has been erratic but that is suspected I guess with a unit with two new faces (Grove, Thomas) in the line up .. I think this will improve as the season moves on.
WR ... This is really beating a deadhorse so I'm going to let this one slide. Lets see there play now that Henne is in the lineup and he can stretch the field a bit more.
Lack of Kick Return .. I don't see why we don't put Ted Ginn back there to return the kicks because appartently he is pretty good at it.

The only real thing for me to do now as a fan is to see where this team goes from here. Do they fight hard? or do they quite?

I'm really interested to watch Henne play this Sunday against the Bills as I don't believe Pennington will be ready to go. I think it will be a better example of what we can expect to see from him in the future with the game plan and full week of practice with the starters to work on it.

I'm sure we are all very frustrated as like you I don't think our record reflects the talent on our squad but rather some bad breaks and a tougher schedule .. do I need to point out all the experts saying "I told you so". It blows cause usually these guys are way off but seem to looking smart so far in Septemeber .. so here is to the rest of the season proving them wrong.

How did we lose this game? ? ?

I'm at a loss for words right now .. How can you look so good and sooo bad all in the same game. They did everything you do to win a game. Run the ball and take it out of the one player who can beat you when he has the ball in his hands yet it still looked the same in the end >>> OUCH!!!

I know people want Penningtons or Ginns head on a stick right now but really is that the problem?

Was it the defense? 2 min drill? or all of the above?

I'm shocked and don't know what to think and don't think I will ever know what to think of this game ... this hurts real bad right now. I guess I'm starting to understand how the Cardinals fans felt in the SB except this was only week 2 .. the real question will be how the players and coaches take this game and move forward ..

Take on tonights Preseason Game

This is what I'm hoping is going down in South Flordia so that my mind will be at ease after watching this last terrible performance by the Dolphins tonight. although I can never call a lose a terrible so lets say BELOW AVERAGE!!!!!!

They are not putting out the best defensive or offensive calls becasue they are grading out players still.

I dont' know any other way to describe how vanilla the play calling seemed tonight and I am really hoping that just like in practice how specific players were targeted I'm praying the same was done tonight. On Offense the run plays surprised nobody and went nowhere and anyone not named Hartline didn't have a great pass thrown there way (although this could also be blamed on the rain haha).. Can anyone here name a defensive line star on the Bucs? Because they were all made out to look like Pro Bowlers tonight. Once again I'm hoping this is all because we didn't want to show our hand and keep things simple althought it did seem like Tony got pissed and started blitzing every down after the rain delay .. atleast we looked good then. The play calling leads me to these players were getting strong looks tonight: Hartline, the entire secondary, Merling, Starks, Wake and Moses.

2. The O-line was sandbagging in the second half .... well the whole game.

This performance was the worst I have seen, ronnie brown is doing spin moves in the backfield just so he could gain a yard. Is it just me or was Rex Hadnot a better guard than Justin Smiley? It seemed like nothing ever went for a gain to the left. Also is Jake Grove that much of an upgrade over Satele? did the Trifecta out think themseleves with this move? These are some of the first thoughts that go through my head after they coudlnt' produce a first down on a 3rd and 1 against the Bucs 2nd unit D and than on the next drive Polite having to fight for the first. Just gross .... So my thoughts to make me smile are they are tired and didn't care as much as they should have so basically laid an egg. I will forget how they ran and just remeber the Panthers game haha

3. RAIN, RAIN, RAIN, RAIN

I thought i was the one who has lived in the rain soaked city of Vancouver yet all I have had is sun while every single Dolphins game has had rain or thunder .... when is this ever going to end? I all i want to see is the team play a game in good weather so i don't see another ball sail or more slop play. SOOOOO Happy the first game of the season will be played in the Georgia Dome

On a positive note I did think Hartline looked great and so did the passrush and defense for the most part and to finish this off I do have to ask one of the opposing QB's to please hold on to the ball a second longer so my boy Wake can get a sack .. three games and three QB hits with the ball being thrown away as they are been taken to the ground ARGH !!!!!!

Talking Heads & Possible W-L

After starting to type a respose to BigReys post it got so long so I decided to post my own with a couple additional points for concirderation. I personally don't care for all the people guessing whether its Mel Kiper or Boomer or Ditka. I don't think any of them have ever been close to perfect on drafts or preseason rankings. It is a common trend among the Talking Heads to pick favorites who they all think will be Super Bowl contenders, remember we were once that team in '06 and the Cardinals were that team for 5 years straight with never coming close. Really who would have thought the Cardinals would have been that close to becoming SB Champs before last season started !!! Football has always been the toughest thing to guess whom will do what with all the moving parts involved. The best way to look at things is like this ... last season is well LAST SEASON so I don't think you can look at that and see what the future holds, just ask the '08 Dolphins. The thing is football is different each season as can be seen by the losing SB team to miss the playoffs 6 of the past 7 seasons. How can you be that close and then never be the same? ? ? Now onto the Phins ... The Dolphins have the makeup to make a great run this season with better depth at the OLB, CB, WR and OL. The addition of JT IMO is largley being overlooked and I think that will lead to a better pass rush, how much better is still to be seen. Our current weakness is probably our Secondary on D and that doesn't bode well for us looking at the Schedule where we play some of the best QB's in the league with Manning, Rivers, Brees, Ryan and Brady x2. What will this all leads to is yet to be determinded as like I said so many things can happen So really taking a look into the schedule we could end up anywhere between 6-12 wins this season. A 6 win season means: *we split to both Buffalo and the Jets *loses against the Chargers *split the NFC South *lose all the games to the AFC South *lose both to the Patriots. A 12 win season means: *sweep Divison except split with the Pats *sweep NFC South *split AFC South *lose to either the Steelers or Chargers Both of these seem really possible depending on how things workout. With everything being in the South this season and travel not being to crazy I can see more of a 10-12 wins ... Your Thoughts?

A Super Fans Look Into the First Week of Camp !!!!!!

I would consider my self a diehard dolphins fan .. so much that I even try to mix it up with the likes of some of you guys. With that being said sometimes the downfall of being a diehard is you think you are seeing things that really aren't there at this time of year (ie A playoff team in '07 that went 1-15). So coming off the great season that was last year and that being followed up by what I would call one of the best offseasons I have been a part of I am at a alltime high as a phins fan in terms of pride maybe since Marino has left.

So with all of that being said I'm about to point out the obvious to the most of you and show you what is really getting me excited about next season:

DEPTH !!!!! - what a difference a year makes in terms of depth this team seems to be putting out on the roster especially at CB, OL, WR and OLB (in comparision to '08). It seems like we still have some areas that are going to need a little help but really its more of just the development of the young players we have in those spots. While we didn't have many injuries last year I feel like we are much better prepared to deal with them this season.
Shaun "Frickin" Murphy - while I was like most of you just hoping this guy could provide as a solid backup this "frickin" guy has been working with the starters the entire week (with some breaks that is). The fact Sparano has come out speaking about this guy is a big indictor for me that he has improved BIGTIME ... so hear is to Donald Thomas getting better (who I think will be the starter)and now we have a bonafide backup incase either Thomas or Smiley go down again.
JT - enough said !!!!! he will be a monster again and people keep writing him off, I havn't even read an article write outside of Miami about what he can bring to the team this season. The thought of Roth being hurt hasn't even bothered me with this beast stepping in and taking his rightful spot on the roster.
WR'S - these guys are stepping up everyway. Bess is looking huge, Camirillo is back and ready to go, Ted Ginn will have a breakout year, London and Hartline lighting it up and I also can't believe everything I have read so far about Patrick Turner .. if this kid is the real deal I will personally petition ESPN to get rid of the idiot Mel Kiper, this guy thinks his opinions of people are perfect yet everytime he speaks all I see is crap coming from his mouth. NFL draft will be the only one I watch from now on .. PERIOD.
