Reality is dawning on the Celtics
I said it earlier before the season began that the C's are just too old and unable to play with the speed and energy the game requires with their starting lineup. Outside of Rondo the C's are a second tier team compared to to elite teams in the league. Paul is a decent player but no longer is he one of the league elite players on offense or defense, with that said he's still a pretty good player with diminishing skills. The same can be said of Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen. So that leaves the C's in a rebuilding process whether the fans know it or not. As for the youth of the C's Johnson looks to have some of the better talent, other than Johnson the C's don't have a budding star on the team ! Rondo is the star of this team now but Rondo needs young agile athletes to run with or his skills gets under used. The C's need to come to grips with the reality they won't nor can they possibly win a championship with the team they currently have. I've been a C's fan over 40 years and still am a big fan, the goal was reached and from there it's a down hill journey until the old troops get relieved
Boston has no young talent.
Chris Paul's concerns regarding Boston is on point, the C's have no future, their premier players are old and not at the top of their game,. In fact the C's don't have a 2011 - 2012 All Star on their team at the moment, with the exception of perhaps Rondo ! Ray Allen has lost perhaps 2 steps and on defense he's the weakest link of the starters, Pierce has lost a step or two as well, not to mention he's not a great ball handler and he handles the ball much too much, Garnett again has lost some quickness and agility but he's still pretty decent as a role player. So honestly the C's aren't gong anywhere with this line up. The C's need at least 3 young players of promise to be competitive for a championship. David West would be an excellent player for the C's, however the C's have no center and Kevin Garnett won't do over the long haul as a center. The C's need a young talented 2 & 3 player. And their current players is not who I'm speaking of. Boston should be in search of. The talented Jamal Crawford would be a great fit for the C's or someone with his abilities !!! Paul Pierce games is sliding down hill from the last 2 years at a fast pace, Ray Allen's shot is terribly inconsistent the last couple of years, and Kevin doesn't play with the old fire he had when he was young . Youth is what the C's need and this year will prove what I'm saying
The C's have to make a deal
With the current roster the C's have if they don't make a deal to make them better offensively and defensively they will go nowhere fast in the playoffs. If its possible for them to unload Rasheed Wallace they need to do so quickly and get a player that is more apt to get rebound offensively and defensively, run the floor and play good defense. Rasheed brings to little effort for the most part in doing any of these things game after game, it appears as though Rasheed main interest in playing with Boston is to shoot 3's, he's clearly a pretty good post up player but it seems as though he's not interested in that part of the game. I for one am more satisfied with the play of Sheldon Williams over Rasheed, with Williams we get a clearer picture of what we can expect from him and he puts in a much better effort than Rasheed. The C's have benefited very little from Rasheed's play and looking back you would have to ask yourself if the C's would've won games they lost had not Rasheed been so trigger happy and lazy on defense ! This Rasheed deal was and is a bad deal for the C's and I get upset as to why he's logging 20 minutes per game ( Doc ) !!
Is Rasheed being coached ?
Its really hard to see or understand what Rasheed is doing on the court half the time, it looks as though he's a free lancer doing whatever he pleases to do. Having a 6'11 center / forward shooting more three than he gets rebounds would be a problem for me. I would guess that his 3 points hoisting is nearly equal to his rebounding !! That has to be a problem for any coach. This team for the most part benefitted from Leon Powe's rebounding and inside scoring, Sheldon Williams brings more to the table with his inside play and rebounding than Rasheed. Doc is either dumb, blind, or foolish allowing Rasheed to play 25ft from the basket. Even the basketball commentaries are wondering about the play of Rasheed. I can't imagine Doc encouraging Rasheed to play that way !!!
Rasheed / wrong choice
It's clear to me that Rasheed is the wrong player for the C's those 3's he's taking is completely wrong for a guy with his close range abilities, he's fallen in love with the long shot at the cost of hurting the C's inside game and short range game. Rasheed rarely gets any offensive rebounds, he scores in the paint quite effectively when he's there but still opts for the long shots. It's clear to me from watching the games that he's offsetting the offense with those quick 3's and frequent 3's, when you tally up his game shots he's usually taken more or as many 3's as he has taken mid range and close range shots !! I like the fact that he has long range ability but I don't like it when he's taken more than 3 long bombers for the game. Rasheed is playing lazy defense and Rondo is getting more rebounds than he is when Rasheed is starting, something is very wrong with that picture ! Doc has intimated that he wants Rasheed to take less 3's and for awhile Rasheed seemed to be listening. Personally it doesn't make much difference to me if he's hitting those shots for one game or not, I would prefer my nearly 7;0 power forward to play a lot closer to the basket and be a threat in or around the paint. The C's has Ray Allen, Paul Pierce, Eddie House for those long shots when needed !!!
Aging
There are several apparent flaws wrong the C's in this young season !
They are hoisting too many 3's I mean way too many, and why Doc hasn't addressed this is beyond my comprehension. Paul is taking too many, and when Rasheed comes in I'm starting to feel that's all he wants to do is shoot 3's. ! Besides the 3's the C's have become a jump shooting team I'm saying nearly every player on the team is settling for jump shots except for Perk & Sheldon Williams and Rondo. Settling for jump shots is pretty typical for aging players at the same time it takes them out of position to get offensive rebounds. Those jump shots when they're not falling will eventually cause the team to look at each other and quietly blame each other. There could be an avalanche of problems resulting from these miscued long shots. Rondo isn't leading the team to play closer to the basket as it appears he's happy to pass the ball to the man who is 25ft from the basket. When all is said and done its Doc's decision to have the team play or not play this kind of basketball. The C's could have won those last 3 games if they continued to pressure the defense with better offensive choices . Rasheed's offensive play is disappointing to me thus far, the number of 3's he's taking is mind boggling to me for a man that stands nearly 7ft tall , more than half of his shots are 3 point shots !!! Then we can talk about too much dribbling by Paul and Ray, they're holding onto the ball too long and it results into bad passes and pressured shots not to mention turnovers . Doc seems content to allow the team to play this way because I'm guessing they are considered a veteran team, well it's not working. This aging team isn't exerting the energy it should to compete from start to finish and it's showing in their defense and offense !
Waning Years
Let's be realistic about the Celtics roster, the stars on this team are no long at the apex of their game, Paul Pierce, K.G. Ray Allen, Rasheed Wallace. They are not as fast, quick, or athletic as they used to be. In fact they some of them aren't at the star level of NBA basketball any longer. The best player of this bunch is clearly KG and I've notice that KG's game isn't as dominant as it once used to be, Pierce is not as quick off the dribble and defensively you can see him having problems staying in front of the younger quicker players ! Ray Allen was never a good defensive player but he's getting beat very very badly and very often ! Rasheed has moved his game further from the basket to compensate for his waning athleticism. And here is the heart and guts of the C's team this year. So who else from the C's roster will be able to rise to the level of stardom ? Unless its the rookie Lester there will be no one else, not saying that the team doesn't have a good supporting cast . Daniels Wallace, Tony Allen can be very adequate at supporting a team. It's my opinion this years team will be the last hooray for the C's unless something magical and unforeseen happens for them. As things are now the best player on the C's is either KG or Rondo !!! And Rondo may have the edge as far as being the MVP of this team. Perhaps Big Baby, Bill Walker, JR Giddens will become All Stars of the near future... I think not !!!
