Kansas Hires Charlie Weis
Interesting location choice for Weis.
Via The Des Moines Register, I saw this picture of Stanzi entering the game last night. I enjoy the fact that he still touches the Kinnick statue on his way in.
Report: Wegher Considering Leave of Absence
Marc, Rick and tons of others are burning up the Tweeter and Facespaces with this tonight...apparently he's been absent from practice.

Princeton Review Top Party Schools
Iowa comes in as the #9 party school per Princeton Review. Discuss and analyze at your leisure. We're one spot above DePauw (or DeLOL, in the parlance of our times) University in Greenscastle, Indiana which I was going to make fun of...until I read its Wikipedia entry:
"DePauw was named one of The 50 Best Colleges for young women by CosmoGirl magazine in October 2006."

Official: Nebraska to Big Ten
Per the Omaha World-Herald, it's done. For reals this time.
Nebraska, Missouri Given Ultimatim By Big 12
Per the WWL, the presidents of the Big 12 have given Mizzou and Nebraska until Friday (with a possible extension) to declare they are headed to the Big 10. This is a very odd turn of events, considering there's no official invites on the table.

Take it for what it's worth...
At the risk of becoming "the T-shirt guy" around here. I thought I would share with you my latest eBay purchase. I assume that Ricky Stanzi is actively campaigning for the reinstatement of the Freedom Bowl.
A Suggestion...
We all know that this Wednesday is going to be exciting: The Iowa Hawkeye Basketball team will of course have 30 turnovers match up against 14 and 6 Ohio State, but as mentioned, the Athletic Office is also putting together a number of incentives and promotions to get you, the casual Hawkeye fan, to the game. (are your eyes bleeding from comma misuse? I hope so.)
One of the promotions for Wednesday is for all (1200) fans to wear gold. Another is for "select" football players* to be on hand to sign autographs (and maybe even don a USA hat or two?). Coincidence? Try higher calling. So, if you are in fact heading to the game this week at CHA...might I be so bold as to suggest a piece of attire?
* Do I know Stanzi will be there? I do not. Will I still look awesome? I will.

Smelling The Roses
Although this isn't a popular opinion from a national perspective, the Iowa Hawkeyes are getting a front row seat to the strengthening of the Big Ten. While the media focuses on an apparent changing of the Big Ten guard in Columbus, other teams are coming to the fore: Iowa just doesn't know how to lose, Penn State is still, well...Penn State, and Michigan will soon (if their coach stays in Ann Arbor) have a potent offense on the back of not one, but two very good young quarterbacks. What's more, three other teams with talented new coaches (Michigan State, justNorthwestern, and Purdue) are quite obviously pointed in the right direction. The Big Ten is not in trouble, its opponents are.
It's been an especially sweet reemergence for Iowa fans. As a little kid in the stands during the late 80's and early 90's (I cried after the loss to Ohio State in 1990) I remember the feeling of always being close. Even though Iowa didn't always win, they never seemed far from one. Fry always seemed to be one "exotic", one big throw, one long Nick Bell rumble away from pulling one out. This season (and, really...last season) feels a lot like those days. Since that freezing cold evening when the Daniel Murray "I-win-you-lose-Penn-State-extravaganza" happened, we've seen a lifetime of amazing wins in 12 games: the Murray kick, the Outback Bowl stomping, the UNI miracle, the Penn State sequel, and oh, yeah...last night. These are the seasons fans hope for, the seasons we all dream about when looking at two deeps, watching spring ball, and pouring over every post of this amazingly awesome blog. My point in the end is this: go buy up the last remaining tickets on stub hub, go scalp to your heart's content, go buy a handle of Hawkeye vodka and a grill...and enjoy this year.
Go Hawks.
The Panthers are the New Hawkeyes?
So, in like...four days, UNI has suspended 5 players:
Backup quarterback Zach Davis
Offensive linemen Evan Tecklenburg and Misha Danilov
Top running back Derrick Law (one game)
Back-up running back Taylor Brookins (indefinitely)

Mediacom To Fix Iowa/Iowa State Television SNAFU
I hadn't noticed this until I started looking at my channel listings, but most eastern Iowa/western Illinois residents don't seem to get FSN Midwest...
"Well, Mediacom plans to come to the rescue. It appears likely the cable company will place the game on its Connections channel (Ch. 22 in most of the state) for communities that don’t have Fox Sports Midwest. Official plans will be released today."
BigTen Network's Football Tour: Iowa

A Different Take on the Kane Story From His Lawyer
A MUCH different take on what may or may not have happened in that cab from Kane's lawyer today...
Comments From DJK on Depth Chart Status
This has been beaten to death, but two comments in this story jumped out and were not things I had seen in other stories:
First: It was news to Derrell Johnson-Koulianos when he read he had been demoted to second-string Iowa Hawkeyes receiver after spring practices because of his rumored participation in a fight.
"I found out like everyone else," the junior pass catcher from Campbell, Ohio said last week of an Internet rumor with no basis in reality. "Why these things surface, I don’t know."
Second:"I came to Iowa because of the positive energy that I received when I first (visited) here," he said. "As of late, it has not been so much. But it’s really not my responsibility to settle those things or figure those things out."
Um, Yikes.
Mediacom Adds BigTen Network in HD
I wasn't sure if this had been posted yet, but I just got a letter stating this yesterday and I do now have BigTen HD in the QCA.
"Mediacom digital cable customers will get five new channels in high-definition, while those who have the broadcast basic or family cable plans will gain at least a dozen new channels by using a new, free converter.
The Big Ten Network, Discovery Channel, TLC, Animal Planet and Lifetime all are being added to the HD family cable plan, Mediacom spokeswoman Phyllis Peters said Thursday."
Greene Signed to Four Year Deal
From the AP: "The New York Jets signed third-round draft pick Shonn Greene on Monday to a four-year deal that includes a $905,000 signing bonus.
The bulldozing running back out of Iowa was the first player taken on the second day of the draft after the Jets traded up with Detroit to select him. "
Tate at Chiefs Mini-Camp
According to arrowheadpride.com, Drew Tate is one of the 6 try out players at this year's Kansas City Chiefs mini-camp. It looks as though they are looking for a 3rd QB with Croyle perpetually inured these days. The picture of Tate looks like it might have been taken shortly after he finished partying in Iowa City with Kyle Orton:
YouTube video of the 2005 Capital One Bowl is thrown into the post for good measure (as it should be).
Haley is the New Chiefs Coach
Rejoice Hawkeyes...We can all take a deep breath now...Todd Haley is the new coach of the Kansas City Chiefs. Haley was scheduled to attend this year's pro bowl but cancelled at the last moment due to the Chiefs situation. It sounds as though the offer has been extended, accepted and the contract work is now underway. The countdown until next year's inevitable Kirk Ferentz rumors starts...now.
Man-Genius to Browns
The Cleveland Browns look to have hired Eric Mangini as their head coach per the AP. I assume Charles Barkley will yell, scream, and drive into a telephone poll in protest. Maybe the Chiefs will hire Pioliolioreo and we can turn to speculation on Ferentz going to Kansas City.
Eric Mangini Hired as Browns Head Coach
Quote of the day:
The 37-year-old began his NFL career as a ballboy with the Browns in 1994.
Paul Rhoads is ISU's new coach
Ankeny native and Auburn DC Paul Rhoads is ISU's next coach.
Iowa to Outback
Go Hawks.
