According to different sources, the term slacker dates back to about 1790 or 1898.[1] It gained some recognition during the British Gezira Scheme in the early to mid 20th century, when Sudanese labourers protested their relative powerlessness by working lethargically, a form of protest known as "slacking."[2][3]

In the United States during World War I, the word "slacker" was commonly used to describe someone who was not participating in the war effort, especially someone who avoided military service, an equivalent of the later term draft dodger. Attempts to track down such evaders were called slacker raids.[4] During World War I, U.S. Senator Miles Poindexter discussed whether inquiries "to separate the cowards and the slackers from those who had not violated the draft" had been managed properly. A San Francisco Chronicle headline on September 7, 1918, read: "Slacker is Doused in Barrel of Paint."[5][6] The term was also used during the World War II period in the United States. In 1940, Time quoted the U.S. Army on managing the military draft efficiently: "War is not going to wait while every slacker resorts to endless appeals."[7]

The shift in the use of "slacker" from its draft-related meaning to a more general sense of the avoidance of work is unclear. In April 1948, the New Republic referred to "resentment against taxes levied to aid slackers."[8]

Dörner beschäftigte sich unter anderem im Bereich der künstlichen Intelligenz mit der Modellierung und Simulation von Emotionen, Absichts- und Handlungsorganisation. Bekannt wurde sein "EMO-Projekt", in dem ein emotionaler Roboter programmiert und simuliert wurde; das Nachfolgeprojekt heißt "PSI". Dörner arbeitete auch mit einer Simulation von Populationen („Mäuse“), in der sämtliche Individuen nach seiner Theorie konzipiert waren.

Dörner entwickelte nicht nur psychologische Theorien menschlichen Handelns und Fühlens, vielmehr testete er sie auch praktisch durch Umsetzung in Simulationssoftware und Vergleich der Ergebnisse mit dem Handeln realer Menschen. Dazu entwickelte er das "Tanaland"-Experiment, mit dessen Hilfe menschlicher Einfluss in komplexen Systemen untersucht werden kann. Es ging hierbei um eine fiktive afrikanische Region, deren Einflussgrößen durch Entwicklungshilfe verändert wurden.

In sports, a "choke" is the failure of an athlete or an athletic team to win a game or tournament when the player or team had been strongly favored to win or had squandered a large lead in the late stages of the event. Muttley is sometimes confused with the crime-fighting dog Mumbly from The Mumbly Cartoon Show.[1]. Mumbly looked similar to Muttley. They had a similar laugh. But, their ears were different and Mumbly had blue fur and wore a trenchcoat. Mumbly later showed up as the captain of the villainous Really Rottens in Laff-a-Lympics along with his accomplice, "The Dread Baron," who resembles Dick Dastardly. The Dread Baron and Mumbly later appeared in the TV movie Yogi Bear and the Magical Flight of the Spruce Goose. It is not certain why Mumbly was retconned as a villain, neither is it certain why he and Dread Baron were apparently used as substitutes for Dastardly and Muttley, especially in the Yogi Bear movie where Paul Winchell voiced the Baron instead of Dastardly (and in the scene where the Baron's crashed plane is shown, it's Dick's plane from Dastardly and Muttley in Their Flying Machines, complete with the "D" on the side). Not to mention that in that story Mumbly had once utilized his tail to fly just like Muttley does in Dastardly and Muttley in Their Flying Machines. The reason most suggested is that the Wacky Races characters (including Dastardly and Muttley) were not fully owned by Hanna-Barbera as the show was a co-production with Heatter-Quigley Productions.

An early version of the Muttley/Mumbly character appears in the 1964 Hanna-Barbera feature film Hey There, It's Yogi Bear!.[6] This prototype Muttley ("Mugger") is a mean-spirited dog with a travelling circus who has a penchant for biting his owners on the leg. The character may also have been inspired by the Atom Ant show's "Precious Pupp" who was known for laughing the same way. Muttley and his master returned in the Wacky Races video game with Billy West voicing the dog

"Doo Doo Doo Doo Doo (Heartbreaker)" is the fourth track on The Rolling Stones' 1973 album Goats Head Soup.

Written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, "Doo Doo Doo Doo Doo (Heartbreaker)"'s lyrics relate two stories: one based on the true story of New York City police shooting a boy because they mistook him for a bank robber,[citation needed] and the second of a ten-year-old girl who dies in an alley of a drug overdose.

After telling the story of the police shooting the wrong person, Jagger sings,

The .44 magnum cartridge had been recently made famous by the 1971 movie Dirty Harry, in which Harry Callahan uses "the most powerful handgun in the world" to cleanse the streets of crime. The lyrics complement the music, which Rolling Stone magazine described as "urban R&B", due to its funk influence and prominent clavinet part (played by Billy Preston).[1]

"Doo Doo Doo Doo Doo (Heartbreaker)" was first recorded in November and December 1972 before being re-recorded early the following summer. Jim Pricearranged the song's horns and played sax, while Chuck Findley took over for Price on trumpet. Mick Taylor played the lead guitar part (which features use of a wah-wah pedal, and a Leslie speaker), Richards played bass; Billy Preston plays Clavinet (also using a wah-wah), and RMI Electra Piano.[2] Released as the second single from Goats Head Soup in the U.S. only (after the #1 hit "Angie"), it reached number 15 in the U.S. on the Billboard Hot 100 and has remained a staple on AOR and classic rock radio stations.

The song also appeared on the American version of the compilation album Rewind (1971-1984). It also was featured in the series finale of the CBS dramaCold Case.

The M25 motorway, or London Orbital, is a 117-mile (188 km) orbital motorway that almost encircles Greater London, England, in the United Kingdom. The motorway was first mooted early in the 20th century. A few sections, based on the now abandoned London Ringways plan, were constructed in the early 1970s and it was completed in 1986. The M25 is one of the world's longest orbital roads[1] and one of the busiest and most congested parts of the British motorway network. 196,000 vehicles were recorded in a single day near London Heathrow Airport. An Academy Award is an award bestowed by the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS)[1] to recognize excellence of professionals in the film industry, including directors, actors, and writers. The Oscar statuette is officially named the Academy Award of Merit and is one of nine types of Academy Awards.

The formal ceremony at which the Awards of Merit are presented is one of the most prominent award ceremonies in the world, and is televised live in more than 100 countries annually, however the first broadcast was not televised. It is also the oldest award ceremony in the media; its equivalents, the Grammy Awards (for music), Emmy Awards (for television), and Tony Awards (for theatre) are modeled after the Academy.

The AMPAS was originally conceived by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer studio boss Louis B. Mayer as a professional honorary organization to help improve the film industry’s image and help mediate labor disputes. The Oscar itself was later initiated by the Academy as an award "of merit for distinctive achievement" in the industry.[2]

The first Academy Awards ceremony was held on May 16, 1929, at the Hotel Roosevelt in Hollywood to honor outstanding film achievements of the 1927/1928 film season. The 84th Academy Awards, honoring films in 2011, will be held at the Hollywood & Highland Center Theatre on February 26, 2012.

Luck or fortuity is good fortune which occurs beyond one's control, without regard to one's will, intention, or desired result. There are at least two senses people usually mean when they use the term, the prescriptive sense and the descriptive sense. In the prescriptive sense, luck is the supernatural and deterministic concept that there is a force which prescribes that certain events occur very much the way the laws of physics will prescribe that certain events occur. It is the prescriptive sense that people mean when they state that they "do not believe in luck." In the descriptive sense, luck is merely a name we give to events after they occur which we find to be fortuitous.

Cultural views of luck vary from perceiving luck as a matter of random chance to attributing to luck explanations of faith or superstition. One year ago today it all began.....

There's been an insane amount of OT discussion in the front page posts lately (which according to some is partly driven by a desire to stay out of conversations with Josey). There's also been some sentiment expressed by a few posters that the sheer volume of that discussion has made it difficult at best to go through the AM threads and find actual baseball discussion, especially if they don't have the time or desire to skim through all the OT stuff.

So, I thought we might try giving the OT discussion it's own home, which will not only make any baseball discussion more accessible for those who are looking for it, but will also allow those who don't want to deal with Josey a sanctuary from his opinions on the "Great Game".

I know most of you probably prefer things the way they are completely unstructured and unfettered, but I hope you'll at least give this idea a chance. To be clear I'm not trying to lay down any kind of law and I'm not doing this on behalf of Adam or GoET. I'm just trying to introduce an informal system that, with a little cooperation among the community, should make the blog better for all concerned.

Anyway, with all that said, feel free to just go for it below - I'm not going to bother suggesting any topics, I think you guys can take care of that on your own.

60 minutes had a good piece tonight on one theory regarding the price of oil. In summary, it started with the deregulation of trading futures by congress in the late 90s/early 2000s.

"And in 2000, Congress effectively deregulated the futures market, granting exemptions for complicated derivative investments called oil swaps, as well as electronic trading on private exchanges."

The reason for the drop in prices last year:

"The oil bubble began to deflate early last fall when Congress threatened new regulations and federal agencies announced they were beginning major investigations. It finally popped with the bankruptcy of Lehman Brothers and the near collapse of AIG, who were both heavily invested in the oil markets. With hedge funds and investment houses facing margin calls, the speculators headed for the exits."
