Harvin?
I dont know how the rest of the Norseman nation feels about this guy, but I am all for taking him if he reaches number 22. I realise that we have a lot of bigger needs to fill but if we stick with the best player available it may very well be him.
If Rick Spielman hasnt put one of his famous red dots by his name he might be well worth the pick. The best thing a team with QB problems can do is put more electric players around them. I dont think Jake Delhome is anything better than a mediocre QB but he has a couple playmakers and he looks great sometimes, when hes not throwing 6 ints.
Listen, Eben Britton, Micheal Oher and Vontae Davis would fill better needs but Harvin is the type of player that a team cant pass up. Watch his college tapes he looks like he is making no effort! Look what he did on a hobbled foot in the national championship! The last time I saw a guy look so effortless he was wearing number 28 for the Oklahoma Sooners. He ran a 4.4 and benched 225lbs. 18 times at the combine. He would provide a return man that this team hasnt ever seen(David Palmer has nothin on this guy). He would be an immediate upgrade in the slot to Wade( I love booby wade and hope he would still be used). And he would be a great person to run out of the backfield, especially when Chester hits the road.
I know he wouldnt immediatly be a recieving threat but get this guy the ball in the open and he can do things that nobody other than A.P. can do. And that means 2 electric players on the field at all times.
Tavaris Jackson Fan Club
This message is to all the people who seemed to watch only the last four games of the regular season. TAVARIS JACKSON IS NOT AN NFL QUARTERBACK. Geez even Brad(hung my head coaching hat on T-jacks career) Childress is starting to come around. Now as a football fan with coaching experience, I don't try to act like I know that much about professional football, But even the casual fan can see that this guy is not progressing.
Sure he put up some decent numbers the last couple of games. But just watch his good plays. They are plays where he makes his throw on his first read, Or he breaks the pocket scrambles and makes something happen. Now I know that having great mobility and making things happen from that is not a bad thing, but it obviously didn't and wont help us to make a superbowl run. He is in his third year as a QB in the pros. He should be able to stand in the pocket, make multiple reads and then use his mobility. Also his consistant accuracy is something that concerns me. He makes some throws that i can't believe and then he cannot hit someone who is WIDE open. That is completely inconsistant.
Look I personally like the guy. He is a good kid and he has all the natural ability in the world. But we do not have time for him to progress into the player we need him to be. I don't blame it all on him. I think that since childress declared him the guy two years ago he should have stuck with him. Because the best experience is on the field. But we have enough talent on this team to make a run and we are essentially a quarterback away from that. We need a guy who is consistant. not extrordinary, just consistant.
If Tavaris is under center next year, I as a die hard fan will be behind him. But i think we must explore our options and atleast for the first time find someone who can make a real competition in training camp.
What about Sage?
After hearing all the talk from people about every quarterback that could possibly be available, I simply have not heard anything about one guy that I like. Sage Rosenfels. I know he doesn't have the track record of Jeff Garcia. And he has never put up astronomical numbers like Derek Anderson. But he is a guy that is low risk and possibly a high reward. Although he's not the first choice of most fans and he is not as flashy as other guys, I think he would be a good fit. Hear me out.
Rosenfels was drafted in the fourth round of the 2001 NFL draft by the Washington Redskins. In his first year he saw no time. He was then traded to the Miami Dolphins for a seventh round pick. In his first three years with the Dolphins he never attempted more than 39 passes so his numbers were very blured. In his fourth and final year with the dolphins he attemted 61 passes only completing 33 of them(55.7 percent), 4 touchdowns and 3 pciks. Not great numbers, but not much of an oppurtunity. In 2005 he signed with the Houston Texans as an UFA. In his three seasons as the Texans back up QB he has had QB ratings of 103, 84.8 and 79.5. He has attempted 240 and 174 passes the last two season and most importantly has had a completion percentage of no lower than 64.2 percent. Compared to Tavaris Jackson who has never completed more than 59.1 percent of his passes. Although his numbers this year were not great 6 TDs to 10 INTs, you take away a horrible game that he stepped in the starting roll for matt shaub(no andre johnson either) agains the Baltimore Ravens(a great defense) where he threw 4 picks to 1 TD, his numbers look much more respectable 5 TD to 6 INTs. Also go back and look at a couple of his comebacks against the Tenesee Titans in 2006 and 2007. They are great games that show glimpses of the QB he can be. in 2006 he came in for schaub in the second half and threw 3 TDs still to lose 28-22. In 2007 he came in in the 4th quarter and threw 4 touchdowns only to be beaten on a last second 8th field goal by Rob Bironas. I like the never say die attitude. He also looked very good against us this season coming in for schaub and passing for over 200 yards in the second half.
I really like Rosenfels. He is a guy that has really never been given the oppurtunity to have a starting job. Last offseason when he was being shopped around, the Vikings were one of the only teams who made an offer. We offered a third round pick and the Texans wanted a second. good thing we didn't give either of those up because then we may have been reluctant to pick up Jared Allen. But if the same is asked for this year I think it would be worth it. There is less of a risk than giving up a first rounder for Derek Anderson and better than picking up a Stop gap type player like Jeff Garcia or Byron Leftwich. He also has experience in the west coast scheem. He is 31 but he has not taken the hits that most 31 year old QBs have. I say take a chance. feel free to comment.
